Hey Dazed and Jodhibik I was just there last month, too....for the IT convention COMDEX. Raming tao sa Vegas noong comdex diba Jodhibik!

2nd time ko sa Las Vegas yun...first time was waaaaayyy back in '88...the only thing then was circus circus and ceasar's palace...bwaahahah.....compared to what vegas has now...paris, bellagio, venetian....that was nothin'.

Yeah, there seems to be a big filipino community there. Maraming Pinoys sa casino :D

Dazed: You should've tried going to the Hoover Dam...a bit more to the east headed towards Arizona na but not that far. I've always wanted to go there...beautiful sight daw sabi nang friend ko. Uhhmmm what else...oh you could've also gone to Laughlin, Nevada. Smaller city but cheaper...good seafood and there's a lake there for watersports, etc.

Jodhibik: how's life in Vegas...it's getting too conjested here in Los Angeles.

Oh and one more thing. There's this HUGE buffet at the RIO. You heard of that Jodhibik?

Kasing laki nang food court nang isang mall....dang!!!! 14 bucks and you get a whole friggin' food court and different ethnic foods to choose from....eeeeeekkkkkk! :D

no way? how'd u like it? people said it was getting smaller compared to previous years, but i've never been there b4, and it was pretty ok for me... had to man a booth so i was stuck inside sands the whole week, and only got out at nite. i flew back first thing saturday morning, so i didn't have time to see the dam. i wanted to go to the grand canyon too, but no go... gives me a reason to come back tho :)

did u go there 4 work? abt rio, yeah, their buffet was pretty good... since that was the only thing i could splurge on, being on an expense acct, we ate at all the nice hotels :) i liked the food at stratosphere the best, so expensive, but with the view, it was worth it... big shot... big shot... big shot... :)

First time at COMDEX actually. Nahhh....not through work....I'm a starving full time college student and a full time BUM....hehehe....:D Seriously it's just really hard to work and manage an acceptable Grade Point Average when you're taking your 300 to 400 level college major coursework as a junior or senior....so nahh I don't work yet. I walk the stage and graduate next Spring 2002 pa.....ahhh.....long ways to go....hope to intern next year w/c is my last year but I'm in the middle of switching majors. C++ knocked the wind out of me....I hated it....the programming language is soooo disgustingly complicated. I'm just finding it difficult to grasp programming language logic. Maybe I should've taken Visual Basic instead as my first language...heard its easier and maybe then I wouldn't have been turned off by programming. Thinking of switching to either Marketing or Finance....not sure yet though. :D

But we all went to COMDEX for free...signed up at the website to be able to just see the exhibit floor. I went as part of our computer informations systems society/club at the university....a big group of 40 students along with our IS professors just for a day, though......we were really rushed.

We basically went to see the booths, the cool gadgets and the latest technologies. WIRELESS was all the buzz and I kept hearing bout BLUETOOTH.

So what company do you work for, what do you do and what booth did you man? The booths really didn't like us bummy college students.....hehehe.....hey but we wanted to ask tons of questions at the booths, we eagerly watched lots of the booth/show presentations and wanted all the FREE "CRAP" we could possibly get our hands on, too...bwahahahha :D I still have tons of pens and crap lying around in my room from COMDEX. The president of our club won a free palm pilot at the drawing, though....lucky him :D

2 more year in school? i miss it, but not the exams... like chef (southpark) says...'there's a time and place for everything, and it's called college' :) can't relate with the programming stuff with u tho... i had 2 classes of C++, i did pretty well, but programming isn't really my cup of tea, and i probly 4got all those commands... like i said in a previous post, IT's still the name of the game. you're bound to bump into it sooner or later in ur career...

abt comdex, yup, i hear u abt bluetooth and all... but it was interesting, cus they've finally gone back to gadgets and consumer products.. not that dominated by dot-coms anymore... i manned a booth in the hongkong pavilion. the company's doing smart card products... it was fun talking to all the different people, but not as fun repeating stuff over and over for a whole week...

i left most of the free stuff i got at the hotel, tho i did take home those balls that light up when u bounce them :)

i spent a lot of time at the recruitment area too, trying to make contacts and getting some info... who knows, right? :)

Got me some of those balls, too :D hehehe What a small world :D Can't believe you were at COMDEX, too hehehe. You know, we couldn't find the ORACLE booth there....did you see one....we really wanted to ask em a bunch of questions....bout their database software and all.

u got it...

4got to mention the favorite freebie i got... the blinking devil's horns from the linux booth, that was way cool :) too bad halloween was over when i got them... abt oracle, i'm not sure i remember, but i don't think i saw them. actually that's one of the signs people were talking about re: comdex going down... some big names dropped out of it, ibm for example...

looks like we're way out of topic here :D

f0r5aK3n,
ditto on that. we spent New Year's day in vegas and sa Bellagio kami nag-stay.....OMIGOSH! galing kaya....you wake up w/ the dancing fountain, and a roomy bathroom, ang classy nakakatuwa! anyways, the sites on Venetian and Paris are nice too. i dont know lang in terms ng rooms nila...but im pretty sure maganda rin dun.

HEY, any of you guys from Vegas know where Andre Agassi lives???? info naman oh. and how to get there din. baka pumunta ako (if you guys will give me info) ulit next year!

Hey! I just want to share my little vacation in Las Vegas last December 29th 2000 through January 1st 2000.
Here it goes: We left for Las Vegas from Los Angeles last Friday (December 29th) at around 4:30 P.M. It took us 4 hours to get there. Moreover, upon arriving to Vegas, we obviously checked-in and we booked for 2 rooms. We got one of the rooms for free, and if you're wondering how this happened, i'll explain more about this later on! Anyways, because of the fact that it was only a Friday (3 days before New Year's) the room rates were somewhat cheap ($99). We stayed at MGM GRAND HOTEL AND CASINO, by the way!
Later on that night, our aunts and uncles went gambling already! Us cousins, we had to stay up in the room mainly because it was getting kind of late already, so we all decided to watch a movie instead. The next day, a Saturday, we all woke up and ate in the hotels GRAND BUFFET. What can I say about the food? Umm. I thought the food was really well cooked and they had a variety! I've always though that buffet food would taste more like school cafeteria food, but i was wrong! We cousins went to ALL STARS CAFE (GAMEWORKS). We went on and played with the arcades (which I find very entertaining). My twin brother and I spend almost all of our time on this one game called (DDR- Dance Dance Revolution)! Since it was a a holiday vacation, when we were at Vegas, there were a lot of tourists from different countries of the world! I couldn't believe how many Asians there were (especially Japs and Chinese). When I saw there play this game (DDR), you can only say "wow" considering their expert-like skills on this game! There were a lot of Europeans that were familiar and inclined with this game as well, and they too were as good!
The day after that, a Sunday, we did the same thing. We ate at McDonald's this time. Upon finishing our brunch, we went to, as usual, GAMEWORKS for another full day's worth of playing, (honestly, I, personally, can't believe how much I spend just playing with the arcades).
One coincident happened while we were all having fun in Vegas. Our friends from school were there too! Even the friends that we have at church went there to spend their little vacation! One of them called our names and were like "what are you guys doing here"?!?! Later on that night, through midnight, the adults didn't want us to go our of our room, because of the crowd downstairs in the main lobby and casino area. So what we did was that we celebrated New Year's in our room, while other people were in the "strip" having fun and boozing up! We turned the TV on and saw the same thing! There were cameras everywhere in Vegas broadcasting the wonderful celebration and fireworks display (Vegas officials spend $500,000) just for the this)!
Monday, we all left and stopped over at Primm, NV , we went major shopping and then went straight back to LA! The traffic was "hell"..it took us 12 hours to get back (3X longer than our trip going to Vegas)!!
Generally, I had fun in this trip. My cousins, aunts and uncles had fun as well!! I think this year's celebration was better than last year's!
To everyone, if your guys have anything to share regarding your experiences in Las Vegas for the New Year, please share it here, the same way I did mines!! Thanks ;-)

Any Filipino kababayans residing in Las Vegas or in Nevada in general that could please share some information on what life is like there?

I know there is a big Filipino community in Vegas so if you could clue me in on how it has been there for you I'd appreciate it.

How's the job market, the cost of living, apartment rental cost, the weather, etc?

I hear housing is more affordable and sales tax is lower. Can anybody confirm?

And how about grocery costs? LOL...sorry I know I'm asking too much :D

I'm just really curious...and looking for the next town to haul my butt into after I graduate from college...I am a Marketing major...15 years in LA and it is getting nasty here for me...need new environment. I really need to get away for an extended period of time to be able to appreciate LA more.

Yeah I've been to Vegas but not for long periods of time...of course I've been on the strip...I've also been to Red Rock Canyon...but that is about it...so I'm clueless.

I just want a city with less traffic, less people and more space and it's gotta have moderately warm weather throughout the year...hehehe...so I'm just trying to gather up some data to determine my next move...Vegas seems like a good idea :)

I also heard from some peeps here in PeX that the IT industry is beginning to move plenty of their offices in Nevada...is that true?

Are the Casinos the only thing keeping Nevada's economy and job market afloat?

Any other comments, observations and advice are welcome!

Sorry if I don't reply back asap but I do read them...thanks again!

I haven't been there myself yet, but I hear they're gradually shifting away from gambling and vice to a more wholesome community environment, from the suburbs inward.

But there are still slot machines everywhere you look. At the gas station, in McDonald's, everywhere: a slot machine.

I've been to Las Vegas twice and all I can say about it is that while it's a good place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there. It seems a little too artificial for me. But that's just my conclusion, after a few days no less.

You said you wanted warm weather year round. Did you ever consider Phoenix?

even by the gates at the airport, i swear! aalis ka na lang, ayaw ka pa nila tigilan!

like Cali4Nia, i've only really been on the strip. it's a great place to visit but i'm not sure i'd stay there all year, let alone a year or two. still, i wouldn't discount it right away. i'm sure the 'burbs and even the other parts of the city are pretty normal.

tell you what, i'll keep your questions in mind while i'm there next week and impart whatever information i can.:)

My friend moved there for a while (but she's back in SF for now)...She said it's alright in Nevada..Housing is pretty cheap.. She rents a spacious two bedroom apartment with her cousin for only $600/month (exactly half of what you'd pay in SF for the exact same thing! Yikes!) Yeah, she said jobs there don't pay as high as Cali but it's good enough to get you by (she worked at some office). Some companies are starting to set up shop in LV, though. Weather could get pretty extreme at times..hella hot during summer and cold during winter..but anyways, did you know Nevada is supposedly going under water, too? I don't even know where we're gonna move now :mecry: ...I was watching Ancient Prophecies IV on TLC (or Discovery Channel?) and they said Texas is the place to go....We're probably gonna move to either Texas or Chicago, but I gotta do some research first. I'm not even sure if Chicago is gonna be safe. Anyways, I'm gonna go try to find the supposed future maps of the US and I'll post the links here.....

- Caligirl -
May 18, 2001, 11:48 AM
These maps are by 3 diffy people but notice how the majority of Cali is almost always under water. :mecry: Gordon Michael Scallion is the most popular among the three.

Brownpau, Kuya Danny, Green Grin, Yayin thank you so much for the posts...I know about the slots...I was at a Vons grocery store there and they had slots there too...unbelievable.

Ad Infinitum: Thanks for the link...very helpful...didn't think of that :D

Ann: You kill me girl:lol: Are you moving just because of those predictions?? Scientifically, does this sinking California or Western US story have any truth to it? I remember that story being featured on the news when I was a kid back in the late 80's...isn't it supposedly going to happen billions of years from now? Do you have any credible educational or university websites that talk about this "Sinking" story in detail?

Hmmm...but I don't think my motive for wanting to move out of LA would be because of those reasons:lol:

Texas?? What is up with Texas? What is there as far as jobs and demographics are concerned? Too far from the coast...I don't know why I still would want to be a stone's throw away from LA.

Chicago?? Hey I thought you wanted to move there?

- Caligirl -
May 18, 2001, 08:22 PM
Reggie: LOL yeah! We're basically moving out cuz of those friggin predictions! I know, I know. Dood, the problem is, my mom and I believe in those kinda things. I guess we watch too much of those shows, but the eerie thing is: all these different psychics, prophets or what-not have been saying the exact SAME thing over and over again. I mean supposedly, even the bible's book of revelations talk about all those cataclysmic predictions that are about to happen. One thing for sure is all of them have been saying that California is definitely going under water. I'm not too surprised cuz you know how we're due for a REALLY big earthquake. Better safe than sorry! ;)

Forreals though, if I had the choice, I'd definitely stay in Cali. I hella love SF plus our house is here, you know? :mecry: Chicago is still on the maybe list but I'm not sure if it's gonna be safe there. (still gotta do research) That Running Deer person suggested moving to Texas, that's why it looks like we might move there. I just hope it's not racist over there cuz you know how it's in the South?

Cali4Nia
May 18, 2001, 10:22 PM
Yeah what is up with Texas?

I heard about racism against Asians and Texas here somewhere in PEX?

Wait I thought there were many Filipinos in Texas?

Hmm...maybe I should start a topic about areas in the US to avoid if one is a minority (Filipinos in the States)?

f0r5aK3n
May 19, 2001, 09:11 AM
yah yah move to Chicago! it's SAFE there Ann!

Just came from a Vegas vacation this summer...

There's a lot of Filipinos in Henderson... Most of them work in Vegas (obviously).

Everything is cheaper in Vegas...

Weather... very hot in the summer, it's at it's best in the spring...

I'd say there's not much in Vegas except for factory outlets, the strip, mount charleston, hoover dam... I'd say go to Arizona for sight seeing.

If you wanna stay in a city with less traffic, less people and more space, having moderately warm weather throughout the year... go to Henderson.

just got back from vegas last week... being the 2nd time around, i wasn't so excited and i got to observe the locals more. besides, i concentrated on work :)

cali4nia's right, there are a lot of filipinos, mostly working in the hotels/casinos. also met up with a friend from back home who was living there, so i got a glimpse on vegas life. i asked her if she intended to stay there for a while, and looks like she will... taxes are one reason, i 4got the exact figures, but it's definitely lower than cali. i think weather's nice, otherwise, why would retirees flock there? i expected it to be scorching hot, since i checked the weather b4 i got there, and it was around 37/38 (sorry, celsius po kami, ewan ko ba kung bakit ayaw pa kase magbago ng US eh) but when i arrived, it wasn't that bad. since it's dry and windy, it was bearable. i can't say the same for hongkong/bangkok/singapore and manila :)

but as kuya danny pointed out, it all looked so superficial. actually, after i saw most of what vegas had to offer, i felt pretty bored. good thing my friends drove over from LA to rescue me :) and at least i made up for the tv and junk food deprivation in hk (think friends, felicity, krispy kreme - damn, still haven't tried in n out :D )

Hey Dazed where you in Vegas for the computer convention Interop? Like you were there for Comdex last November.

'Cause our computer club from campus was there again for Interop too last May 8. Same venue as Comdex.

Pretty cool...loved the flashy presentations especially Sprint's presentation with the Drew Carey and Robin Williams impersonators. Did you see the chick viruses? The two pretty long legged ladies who dressed up as the Anna Kourinkova and I love You virus...lotsa guys got their pictures taken with those two. Oh and lotsa free crap again...my favorite was the spinning red top that lit up when it spun...no Linux devil horns this time...Dell was giving out "tsinelas"...hehehe.

hey cali4nia :)
boy did i go to the wrong show :) we didn't have anything close to those chick viruses u were talking about... i was at CTST, small show, very specific to cards and security. funny how we somehow end up in vegas almost at the same time :) i managed to resist getting all those free junk. my apartment's still cluttered with stuff from the last show, tho the devil horns were a hit when i came home for christmas/new year...

honestly tho, i wouldn't mind another place next time :D

Just curious! I've been here in Las Vegas since the last week of July taking care of business and of course, indulging in some pleasure! Dang! The hot scorching humid weather here hasn't let up one bit eversince my arrival, and they're predicting more scorching humid weather on the way right up to the long holiday weekend! Hot dang, man, I love Las Vegas from a party town point of view, but gambling and partying aside, I missed the east coast weather! Can't wait to get back to the east coast! :sunny: :flamer: :flame:

1)Las Vegas Strip- di lang naman gambling ang pwede gawin dito.Sight seeing din!People over 21 be sure to have your ID's ready.Pag Asian kasi medyo chinecheck talaga kasi mukha daw bata ang Asians and they really cant tell if you're over 21 na.

2)Downtown- Fremont Street Experience...aside from the casinos, buffets and street shows, pag gabi theres the Fremont Show sa bubong...parang sa COD before! Pero syempre hi tech na!

3)Lake Mead

4)Go to plays...medyo mahal nga lang ticket but then there are group rates...

5)Mount Charleston...pag winter skiing, pag summer trekking

& you look like you're helping? wow.

tin28: we just did the strip & the old strip thing. i know what you're talking about the id thing. i always have it in my pocket, i get carded every hour!

everything was mellow & laid back, we didn't rush ourselves to go everywhere (as we've been there for almost every year).

we were just looking for something new to do (we're quite unlucky though cause we're a bunch of tamads.) the shows that we like are sold out for those nights we wanted to see them & they don't like to do much either.

we'll plan our trip again for next year & i'll make sure we hop onto different places. thanks for the info! (do you own a house there? real estate is booming right now!)

Having lived in various cities around the country, Las Vegas is the best city for me lalo na for pinoys as entertainment and dining choices are everywhere and 24/7. If you're a student, well not as many choices with CCSN and UNLV but if your're working- nice tax break on your state income- ZERO taxes! If you're in business or planning to start one, Nevada corporation is probably the best in the country that's why as you'll drive around, there's a plethora of small businesses everywhere. For outdoors type, there's Lake Mead and Red Rocks-- love the hiking trails and mountain climbing there. There's also a variety of shows and concerts including pinoy bands everywhere in the hotel lounges- of course, there's Society of Seven Shows in Ballys w/ Lani Misalucha. Is the economy stable? The only difference I see are the kinds of tourists that come in- now Chinese and Indians and lots of Americans! Don't laugh, it used to be Japanese and Europeans. As long as there are countries doing OK around the world, Las Vegas economy will be fine. I still feel elated everytime I drive on the strip seeing the thousands of tourists walking around adding to the cities coffers, :). I'm still new here but I used to visit at least twice a month. If anybody wants to chit-chat about Vegas Life, economy or business, drop a line- Joeey@usa.com

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH REGINE VELASQUEZ

Asia Songbird ‘s classic solo act in Reno on May 25

The past years the Filipino North American audiences have been regaled with a smorgasbord of artists, combining various singers with all sorts of permutations to come up with a good show. More often than not, these back to back shows and group artists combinations leave the concertgoers overwhelmed with too much visuals and too much music to bear. Sometimes the artistic talent of a singer is lost with all these chutzpah, and all that is heard is a cacophony of sound –the essence of the songs is lost.

Now is the time to get back to the solo acts and enjoy the real music of a real artist.

Isn’t it something different if we listen to a singer without the frills and frivolities of grand production numbers and just concentrate on a singer’s vocal charms?

True concerts are those that illuminate the real talent of singers in a solo act.

The challenge of a singer is to keep and capture of his or her audience, enchanted the whole show by himself or herself. What do you think if Regine comes up with a solo act? Well, wait no further because she has one coming soon.

Regine Velasquez comes solo and shines as one with her special intimate show entitled “Up, Close And Personal.” This concert reveals the intimate side of Regine with her popular hit tunes and ballads minus all back-to-back production numbers. This time, Regine, after twenty years in show business will come out in a concert redefining the language of music on her own.

Fresh from her controversial tango with ABS-CBN and GMA networks, Regine finally decided to remain in her home TV network to become a loyal Kapuso. Recently, her emotional comeback in the weekend noontime show “SOP” climbed up in the TV ratings game. At this time, Regine is also busy preparing for two movies and a soap with GMA 7.

This memorial weekend, don’t miss, Regine in her best solo act ever in Reno, Nevada on May 25, Sunday at 8:00 p.m. at the Grande Exposition Hall, Silver Legacy Casino presented by Starmedia Entertainment in association with Silver Legacy Resort Casino, ElDorado Casino Hotel Hoteland Circus Circus Reno with the following co-presentors, The Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel, The Belo Medical Group and GMA Pinoy TV. For tickets and inquires, please call Ticketmaster, Silver Legacy at 800-687-8733, El Dorado at 800-879-8879, Circus Circus at 800-648-5010, and Starmedia at (818) 549 9005 and (818) 547 1456.
