SAN BEDA EXEC SAYS
‘Bolting NCAA an option’
By Julius Manicad
08/26/2007
As if the troubles hounding the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) were not enough, a ranking San Beda College official yesterday bared the school’s possible withdrawal from the league if no solution is found to diffuse the ongoing case involving ace Red Lion Yousif Aljamal.
The official, however, said although “withdrawal is an option, San Beda will still pursue an amicable ending to the Aljamal case,” which started last week after the league’s Management Committee (Mancom) suspended Aljamal for the season for joining the Philippine Basketball Association’s rookie draft without seeking permission from the NCAA.
The NCAA Mancom decision, however, did not hold. First, it reconsidered the season-long suspension of Aljamal, shortening the sanction to three days which wasn’t served still as San Beda was able to secure a temporary restraining order (TRO) from a Manila court.
San Beda is now seeking a permanent injunction, an action which a ranking league official may drive the NCAA to scrap the ongoing basketball season. But ABS-CBN, the league’s television partner, warned against the cancellation of the season, saying the league may face a possible court case if it turns its back on its contractual obligations with the television firm and their sponsors.
While waiting for a permanent order, San Beda just received a 20-day extension of the TRO, allowing Aljamal to play for the Lions for at least three more weeks.
The league has been beset with numerous problems, including illegal gambling where the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had arrested a player and several other personalities for running an illegal gambling ring within the league. On and off-court fights are also a common sight in the NCAA. A player was also found to have falsified his records to be able to play.
For these, a San Beda source revealed school officials are not closing their thoughts on the possibility of transferring to another league.
The Tribune source stressed San Beda is willing to leave the NCAA “only after we teach them a lesson that injustice does not pay.” The school’s administrators will meet soon to make a “crucial decision,” but everything still depends on the outcome of their legal tussle against the country’s oldest collegiate league, the source further said.
For the meantime, San Beda is leaving its fate at the hands of the civil court and the seven-man NCAA Mancom headed by Jose Rizal University’s Paul Supan.
“Isn’t it pretty obvious that they will use all means, fair or foul, just to get ahead?” the source, a San Beda hardliner who begged off to be identified, said. “Leaving the NCAA is always an option but not a priority for now. And it will become an option only after teaching them a lesson that injustice does not pay. If they need the courts to do that, so be it.”
Bannered by Nigerian Sam Ekwe and Aljamal, who averages a team-high 15.2 points per game, the Red Lions enjoy a 9-1 mark entering the final week of the two-round elimination. With the way things go, San Beda is heavily tipped to proceed all the way to its second crown in 29 years. The source, however, said even if the resolution of the case would take long, they are willing to wait, before deciding whether they will stay or go.”
“Don’t they know that we’re willing to go (and wait) all the way even after the championship if needed to be?”
A top basketball official also testified on the veracity of San Beda’s possible action, saying leaving the NCAA has been an open-secret in and around San Beda’s Mendiola campus since the controversy started.
“I always hear about the possibility of bolting out of the NCAA, but I do not know where it came from. Maybe it’s true. Your guess is as good as mine.”
Along with Letran, Ateneo, La Salle , Mapua and JRU, San Beda is an original member of the NCAA when the league opened shop 83 years ago.

correction: San Beda is the only founding member Left in the NCAA.
Letran, JRU and Mapua joined the NCAA few years after the league was founded. They are not part of the original member schools that founded the league.
NCAA Founding Members
Ateneo
San Beda
UST
UP
UM
Institute of Accounts
La Salle
So if ever San Beda bolts out the NCAA. They will leave the league with no founding member left.

Its about time for San BEda to move to UAAP. It will be healthy for both NCAA and UAAP. Red Lions got the strength and good structured bball programs to match the best of UAAP. MEdyo magiging emotional to para sa San Beda, but, Sam Ekwe, Aljamals suspension has already polarized the league. Its time to move on and elevate the level of their game, and UAAP can give them that.

Definitely. Whatever makes you happy Ms. Stone Collector.
I just wonder if the MANCOM has a made up, este an existing rule on "bolting" the league also. Paging Mr. Supan, if ever we go this route do we have to get your, este the MANCOM's "consent" also? :)
If yes, please do send us a written copy of such a rule. That way you won't subject us to sanctions even though we may no longer be in the NCAA. If ever lang naman po kasi mahirap naman mag-order ng suspension if the to be suspended party is no longer around. :rotflmao:

Brawls are common in college basketball, may they be in the NCAA or UAAP.
Ang tinutukoy ko *** nangyari sa MANCOM.. The Yousif Aljamal issue.. the questionable complain of JRU against our captain ball and the LATE delivery of their notice, just in time for the San Beda-JRU game. The rough Beda-JRU game was just the effect of MANCOM's attempt to remove Yousif. More so, the off court drama in the NCAA, the whole TRO issue.

dude, playing rough is part of the game. it's the referees' job to keep the game under control. kaya nga tinawagan sila ng flagrant foul eh. i love playing basketball and there is one saying in basketball that i keep very close to me so di ako napipikon and im going to tell you that saying. IF YOU CAN'T TAKE IT, BETTER STOP PLAYING. its like trash talking. it isn't suppose to be part of the game. basketball was originally created as a non-contact sport but it evolved to one. face it, rough play is part of the game. if you can't take it then don't play. and i was watching the game on TV. The san beda 5 were not complaining (I think) and it was only their coach that started trouble. maghamon ba naman ng suntukan.. yan ang di kasama sa basketball.

The rough game and Frankie Lim's actions is NOT the issue.
Stop focusing on the details, look at what is MACRO not MICRO.
We can play rough and we can bring it on... but the off court dirt is something intolerable! The MANCOM pulling strings and dirty tactics is the issue here pal!!! Manipulating rules and regulations to favor a team has no room in collegiate basketball.

kung mawawala sila..
kawawa ang NCAA..
wala ng dating..
walang rivalry..

nope... San Beda is not a university.. in the not so distant future yes but as of present no...
Nevertheless, San Beda doesnt need to join the UAAP.. the issue in relation to San Beda bolting out of the NCAA is pure hearsay...
We are THE ONLY FOUNDING MEMBER LEFT in the NCAA.. we have the BIRTH GIVEN RIGHT in this league... unlike Ateneo or La Salle who just joined the UAAP (no disrespect to the two universities though). Nevertheless, your question connotes a negative tone, WE KNOW HOW TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES BOB!!! So you better beat it coz your dealing with THE ONLY FOUNDING MEMBER OF THIS LEAGUE!!!
Please remember this, in the Philippine context, universitihood does not equate to better education. This applies to most first world countries but not here in the Philippines. Yes, there is UP, ADMU, DLSU and UST... but do you seriously think that schools such as NU, FEU, UPHDS, JRU, CEU, UE and AMAU are better than Assumption, Mapua, CSB, St. Scholastica, Miriam, Letran and San Beda? Let's be realist BOB... I dont know from what school your from, but I think your smart enough to pick up the thought!

Let's just stick to the topic ok? Wala namang kwenta na patulan pa.
Yes San Beda is really aiming for University status as soon as possible. That is why we are establishing programs and schools with quality and within capacity. We all know that this is just for formality.
DonLabaro is correct. University status does not reflect into better education. But you should not have gone to the extent of naming other schools. Its an open secret so to speak.
As for San Beda bolting out, well it is an option. I repeat, OPTION ONLY.
Another question is, if San Beda really bolted out of the NCAA, wouldn't there be problems with the franchise of NCAA since there are no more founding schools? Maybe we can ask for the scrapping of the whole league? This is just my perception.

hindi basura ang SBC sa NCAA..
to think, SBC is one of the 4 prestigious schools left in the league..
kung mawawala sila..
kawawa ang NCAA..
wala ng dating..
walang rivalry..

During the times na cellar dweller ang SBC.. Hindi naman patay ang NCAA. More exciting pa nga yata nung kalakasan ng CSB and SSCR.
NCAA can admit SFACS or EAC or Lyceum.. na may magandang basketball/sports program din..

Shooting itself in the foot
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
Tuesday, August 28, 2007
There is a clear failure to communicate within the NCAA hierarchy in the case involving San Beda College star Yousif Aljamal, last year’s Finals MVP.
Instead of closing ranks in the wake of a scandalous point-shaving scheme uncovered by police authorities, the NCAA has chosen to shoot itself in the foot by trying to gun down one of its role models.
Last Tuesday, the NCAA Management Committee issued a memorandum suspending Aljamal the day before the Red Lions were to face Jose Rizal University. Curiously, the memorandum was dated two weeks earlier.
The delayed issuance gave San Beda officials no time to appeal the decision before the Committee, forcing a move to go to the courts for a stay. On the day of the game, Judge Reynaldo Ros of Branch 33 of the Manila Regional Trial Court authorized a 72-hour temporary restraining order to allow Aljamal to suit up.
Showing no demoralization despite the attempt to barnacle him, Aljamal fired 23 points to power San Beda to an 82-74 win over the Heavy Bombers. The game, however, was marred by a series of flagrant fouls, temper blow-ups and a near fistfight involving the opposing coaches. Surely, the attempt to shackle Aljamal had a lot to do with turning the game into a powder-keg situation. The Committee can only be blamed for that volcanic eruption.
San Beda officials later secured a 20-day extension of the TRO, putting the NCAA in an embarrassing bind.
The sordid affair could’ve been prevented if only the Committee discussed the matter transparently with the intention of finding a positive solution to a prospective problem. From the looks of things, the hatchet job was a conspiracy to gang up on the league’s No. 1 team.
It’s never a good policy to question the administration or authority of a sports league in the courts. The spirit of sportsmanship is lost when an athlete seeks redress beyond the confines of his sport for an apparent injustice that is sports-related. But what is an athlete to do if he is unfairly treated by those who control his sport?
The Committee swooped down on Aljamal for participating in a three-day PBA rookie camp preparatory to the pro draft. The Committee said Aljamal never sought permission to play in the camp and slapped the suspension because of the apparent snub.
The Committee initially barred Aljamal from playing for the rest of the season but the NCAA Policy Board was more tolerant, deciding to freeze him only up to the end of the eliminations.
If Aljamal was really guilty of violating a league rule, why did the Policy Board relax the penalty earlier imposed by the Committee? What prompted the Committee to suspend Aljamal in the first place? A snub? An oversight? Where is the consistency of decision-making in the NCAA leadership?
Aljamal’s application for the PBA draft was well-known and publicized for weeks before the Committee issued the suspension. If all the Committee wanted was for Aljamal to seek permission, why didn’t it inform San Beda beforehand? Why was the memorandum dated Aug. 8 or 11 days before the draft? Was there a plot to disenfranchise Aljamal from the start?
San Beda officials claim no permission was needed for Aljamal to participate in the rookie camp because it wasn’t a tournament. Surely, if the NCAA’s rules were clear, there would be no misinterpretation. And since the rules were obviously unclear, shouldn’t there have been prior consultation or discussion before issuing a decision based on a hazy premise?
It’s as if the NCAA had no more serious problems to tackle. The point-shaving scandal certainly put to doubt the integrity of the season and rather than clean up its act, the NCAA chose to disbar one of its star players in a move that smacks of bad faith and poor sportsmanship. What message is the NCAA delivering to the students of the schools that make up the league?
Then, there was talk that the season might be scrapped as a way for the Committee to express its displeasure on the court’s invasion of its turf. Fortunately, the talk proved to be a baseless rumor. It wouldn’t have just been shooting itself in the foot but the Committee would’ve shot itself in the head if it decided to scrap the season.
Clamping down on a powerhouse school is nothing new. In the UAAP, La Salle was slapped a one-year suspension in all sports after it voluntarily informed the league of eligibility violations in its senior basketball program. The violations involved two relatively inconsequential players and in a show of sincerity, La Salle offered to surrender the championship trophy the Archers won with the ineligible cagers in the lineup.
Instead of using La Salle as an example, the UAAP chose to suspend the school not just in basketball but in all other sports. Even the high school athletes weren’t spared. Athletes who had nothing to do with the eligibility issue were penalized unfairly. The decision wasn’t only severe but abusive and apparently, spiteful.
If other schools were to uncover similar violations in the future, none would ever come out in the open to volunteer the information because of the risk of being chastised for honesty.
The UAAP and NCAA are supposed to be bastions of sportsmanship. School officials are expected to lead by example. But from recent developments, neither league has reason to be proud. Politics, partisanship and crab mentality are so prevalent in shaping decisions that are so uncharacteristic of Christian educators who make up the leadership in the school leagues.

What’s with the last paragraph? I just want to know if san Beda is already a university to join the uaap. Because, almost, everybody (in this thread) is saying that if they bolt out of the ncaa they can join the uaap. I’m not angry at you ha. But, I think you shouldn’t have written the last paragraph.

So, walang reason para tawagin na "big boys" ng college basketball ang UAAP at iassume na hindi pa bagay ang SBC for UAAP. isa pa now is the best time na lumipat habang gumaganda ang bball prog ng sbc at maimprove pa. hindi naman ASAP ang paglipat na sinasabe eh. transfer is an OPTION not a PRIORITY sabe nga ng source di ba. ska anu bang issue kay sam ekwe? he is not an import tulad ng sinasabe. import(as in pba import sense ba?) ekwe is a legitimate student of SBC and DECIDED to play for SBC. By merely saying hes an import of SBC ay pagsawsaw na rin sa issue di ba? and dragging his name " at irampa si sam ekwe (?)" I think it is also unfair to call ekwe an import. parang sinisingle out sya eh..He's a bedan, a student of SBC not an import.

Pag may tune up games, tinatamad na kong maglaro, pag nalaman kong,"KAYOOO NA NAMAN ANG KALABAN ?"

Toti there is no point arguing to a grumbling and pretentious person - who is very much the reflection of what he writes. Well he can attempt to bring others to his level but of course people with common sense can discern.
I guess this is the same guy (?) who works in Etelecare and assumes different alternicks. A lot of things can be said from where he comes from but it would be best not to talk about it. The presumption that he is the same guy as earlier mentioned is evident in his language and tone of writing which are fairly consistent and exact.
Our character, language and principles differentiate us from people like him and we should direct our energies to other things constructive.
I haven't heard anything serious about SBC threatening to bolt out of the NCAA. Logically, moving to the UAAP would put more marketing mileage for SBC taking into consideration the extensive exposure given to that league by ABS. Moreover, it would be delightful to relive rivalries of the past. But before anything else, I think SBC would need to mull over and meet the criteria for UAAP membership first.

NCAA will not collapse but there is a possibility that it can lose it's tv coverage and it's popularity. I must admit, NCAA is riding San Beda's run since it became champion last 2006 ending their 28 year drought. Rise in the tv ratings must be subjected to San Beda's return to glory, more and more people are talking about the NCAA now. The San Beda-Letran Finals must be the most watch Finals in years. The Aljamal issue was on every news program. For the NCAA, losing San Beda is losing a bit of everything. It will be very hard to replace it's last original member when it pertains in the schools popularity and glamor. And everybody in the league surely knows that.

last na na pagsawsaw, UAAP survived even when DLSU was suspended with packed venue for all big games ( and for all big games i mean games with UST, AdMU, FEU and UE against each other, and of course UP during CDC. if UP improve their sports program they can gather a behemoth of a crowd, believe me.
but thats not always accurate with NCAA, sad to say. from an outsider's perspective, it's a little too dependent on the publicity SBC brings along with them, maybe cuz it's the only remaining founding member.
worst case scenario when the rumored bolt out happens, ABS will drop the TV coverage. NCAA will soon be forgotten and will only exist in the world of the participating schools, much like CUSA. this for me should not even be a problem because this league is not formed for the purpose of publicity but to improve the sports program of each school and promote healthy competition.
luckily, as much as SBC wants to transfer to UAAP ( if its true that they really want to ) they must at least secure a university status first. this is really such a stressful thing for Beda to do just so they can join the UAAP, i think they have other priorities. second, if they join UAAP, they'll be the 9th member which i dont think is allowed. as far as i know, it's supposed to be an even number. they have to ask another school to join with them to make it an even 10. ;)

Yes, UAAP survived even if DLSU is out for one year...
But UAAP also had lower tv ratings in 2006 when DLSU was suspended compared to NCAA 2006 when San Beda won championship...
