PLAYING FAIR

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
ManilaStandardToday.com
24 August 2007

WHEN we switched to Studio 23 to watch the San Beda-Jose Rizal University game last Tuesday, we were pleasantly surprised to see Red Lion’s hotshot Yousif Aljamal in action since the league’s so-called management committee had banned him for the rest of the season.

The reasons cited was Aljamal’s failure to inform the Mancom of his entry into the Philippine Basketball Association Annual Draft and apparently for his participation in games, which were part of the Rookie Camp activities.

For a moment, we thought that good sense had prevailed and the National Collegiate Athletic Association realized its mistake and let the young man play. Instead, it turned out that San Beda obtained a Temporary Restraining Order, which enabled Aljamal to play in what was a crucial game to Jose Rizal University in its bid to earn a place in the Final Four.

To begin with, the attempt by management committees or boards of governors to interfere in the operations of any leagues goes against the grain of ensuring fairness and integrity, since team owners or their representatives obviously have partisan and selfish interests to protect. This is true of the PBA, PBL, UAAP, NCAA or any other league for that matter. That is why the leagues appoint commissioners, who are presumably fair-minded individuals, who don’t favor any team and have no particular interests other than the good of the league as a whole.

“Think League” was the cry of the late, well-loved PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino, who followed the path of independence and fairness, which were espoused by his eminent predecessors and mentors Leo Prieto and Rudy Salud.

The fact that JRU, the host of this year’s NCAA, was playing San Beda in a game that meant so much to them and stood to benefit from the ban on Aljamal made a mockery of the concept of fairness and sportsmanship that we presume is inculcated in the youth by our educational institutions. Whether JRU influenced the Mancom or not is immaterial, because whether they like it not, it looked in very poor taste. Besides, it didn’t speak well of the NCAA itself especially since Aljamal was a key player and proved it beyond doubt in Tuesday’s (sic) game.

The resort to the courts as a means of obtaining justice in a sporting environment runs counter to the very essence of the philosophy that games should be won or lost on the hardcourt or the playing field and never in board rooms, where personal interests override the good of the league. Beyond that, it sets a disturbing trend that all genuine lovers of sport should guard against.

Of course, San Beda was left with no choice but to seek redress in the courts for what seemed like a terrible injustice both to the team and the player by the NCAA management committee, which should, in the first place, merely set the goals and the guidelines and allow its commissioner to run the league and decide on issues of eligibility, violation of rules, etc.

Aljamal had an inherent right to join the PBA Draft and there is no earthly reason why he should have been severely penalized for not informing the NCAA other than it being an act of courtesy. That he played in the Rookie Camp games as a basis for the disqualification rings hollow. The games were not part of a sanctioned tournament and was merely an attempt to size up the skills of the amateur players in the draft.

In the end, Aljamal played, San Beda won as expected despite a pathetic effort of JRU to play dirty at times, which incurred the ire of coach Frankie Lim, and JRU was embarrassed, not so much because they lost but how they tried to win.

CREDITS TO THE FF:

1. Coach Hopiang Baboy HOGuardia - for calling the shots and masterminding the plays. for hiding behind his hopia robots and soiling his pants from the verbal abuse he received. Also for the free hopiang baboy after each practice wherein the ingredients used is derived from his gut. eeeww!

2. Bchemist - for strength conditioning, agility, endurance, some backdoor action, shot of steroids.. etc. of the players, none of these deadly accurate maneuvers would have been possible to execute without the necessary upper body strength or so she says.. only the cream of the crap can make that possible in weeks! (would you believe that crap?)

3. none other than the stars: Hopia Bummers - for being sooo dumb to not know what is the right thing to do and blindly follows their coaches evil deeds.

4. Paul Supsupan (who else!?) - the greatest sixth man of them all, who would search heaven and hell, move mountains, swim oceans, slew lions, make up false rules and by-laws, scheme evil plans, bake hopia, look despicable, be arrogant, get hysterical over an impending defeat, look pathetic, cry :mecry:, troop to the red army gallery to intimidate some kids but only to cower in fear in the end. all sacrifices for the love of the game, goodwill, sportsmanship, transparency, for his beloved hopias and to line his pocket.

What frankie did last wednesday was NOT HOW A BEDAN SHOULD BE. Wala sa lugar!! He used to be like that back in his PBA days. He said that what jru players did on his guys was a blessing of jru's coach(?). Pressuming he was right, is it not but proper to complain to the refs. Then the refs shoud then have penalized those players..kick the players out if they have to! But why single out JRU's coach??!

And his words.... his words are plain too dirty which contradicts his useless statement of "having class" so to speak. What he did, confronting...using kalye dirty words and his actions in general were plain too cheap! I'm just disgusted on how he acted.

c'mon guys. let's all be open minded about this issue. true enough, the players of jru have commited such unaccepted fouls BUT I didn't like the way frankie lim reacted. asan na yung 'class' na sinasabi nya wherein the way his actions speak of being unclassy at all. I even saw his wife by the bench, nakikipagaway din!!!!!!!!!!!!! *** da hell! and from what i know, she teaches 'etiquette' pa.

i'd rather have koy banal and get a b2b than have this whole crappy incident happen again. disappointing.

Of course the bedans showed class. The Red Lions, the gallery, Coach Frankie Lim and his wife, UNTIL the JRU started hurting them intentionally with the blessing of the JRU officials, from their players to their coaches to their Mancom representative Mr. Supan. The Bedans showed class, while the JRU officials did exactly the opposite. Do you know any group of people, or even a country, that were attacked by another country, that just sat there and did not retaliate and just smiled at the other country who attacked them and pretended that nothing happened because they have class?? JRU officials are just a bunch of idiots! When the Germans attacked the Russians, they got surrounded and beaten by Russia's Red Army with the help of its allies.. and when Japan attacked the USA at Pearl Harbor, come game time between us, you can expect the San Beda Community and our Red Lions to make a much bigger impact than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on your JRU Bombers.. so big of an impact na magmumuka kayong "watusi" kumpara sa isang atomic bomb sa tabi naming mga bedista..

I feel bad for their students and alumni because they don't know what coming to them, because I'm sure they had no idea what their school officials have planned for the bedans before the games started, which is to hurt them and tried to provoke fights against the bedan players so they can be suspended maybe for more than one game, that they will be suspended two or three games after, that they won't be allowed to play against them sa playoff.

JRU officials probably planned all these before the game started, as JRU being the host, that they will insinuate a fight against the bedan players by giving them unsportsmanlike fouls, fouls so hard and intentional that any player would feel like retaliating or hitting back, but once a player retaliates, that is an automatic ejection and at least a one-game suspension or more, and the JRU player who initiated it would not actually fight back (kasi nauna na sila eh) but would simply get a flagrant foul or an unsportsmanlike foul. The playoffs are here and only a few games away. Imagine if any of the bedans retaliated, and JRU being the host, Mr. Supan on his side have planned to give the San Beda players who would have retaliated more than a one-game suspension, but several games, like at least the next 3 games of the Red Lions, perhaps a suspension that would reach up to the playoffs, like what they initially thought of doing to Aljamal.

That's what they thought they could do, pero nagkamali sila, the Red Lions will be in full force come playoff time... with a vengeance... vengeance with class!
