MVP: Kelvin dela Pena - Mapua

Mythical 5

G Kelvin dela Pena - Mapua
G Sean Co - Mapua
F Yousif Aljamahal - San Beda
F Daren Hayes - JRU
C Sam Ekwe - San Beda

ROY: Jonathan Banal - Mapua

MIP: Sean Co - Mapua / Jay Jazul - Letran

DPY: Sam Ekwe - San Beda

NCAA Power Rankings: KDP spells like MVP

1. Kelvin dela Peña (MIT) – Maybe, just maybe, if dela Peña did not get himself fouled out in the minute of the Cardinals’ game against CSJL (8/8), he might have grabbed a rebound that could have given him his second triple-double in a span of less than a month (17 pts, 8/8 ft, 9 rebs, 11 assts). He then followed it up with 19 points on 8/14 shooting, seven rebounds, and six assists against SSCR (8/10). If MIT compliments his performance with wins, and possibly a final four appearance, then we might be seeing an MVP frontrunner in this guy.

2. Yousif Aljamal (SBC) – Surprisingly, or it may not come as a shock at all, Aljamal has been the pride of the Red Lions for some time now (21 pts, 3/4 3pts, 10 rebs vs CSB, 8/10). This compensates on the down time Pong Escobal (4 pts, 22 mins vs CSB, 8/10) and Ogie Menor (scoring going down since 21 pts vs CSB, 7/11) are suffering at the moment.

3. Jason Ballesteros (SSCR) – Just like a good song that you could not get out of you head, Ballesteros returns to the countdown with a double-double (13 pts, 15 rebs vs MIT, 8/10) and then some (4 blks).

4. Sean Co (MIT) – Co has stepped up as the primary scorer for MIT coach Leo Isaac (19 ppg last week). In addition, he finds the time to do some other things as well (9 rebs vs CSJL, 8/8).

5. Jonathan Banal (MIT) – Making a debut into the list is Jonathan Banal, son of former SBC coach Koy Banal. Long overdue, actually, but he made the cut this time around (14 pts, 6/9 2pts, 2 rebs, 4 assts, 1 blk vs CSJL, 8/8; 11 pts, 8/8 fts, 5 rebs, 3 assts, 2 stls vs SSCR, 8/10). He might just bag ROY if he remains on form.

6. Sam Ekwe (SBC) – Ekwe had a pretty normal afternoon statistically against CSB (13 pts, 19 rebs, 3 blocks, 8/10). It was his shooting though that was off that day (4/14 fg, 5/10 ft).

7. Jerby del Rosario (MIT) – It is obvious the team of the week is Mapua with four entrants on the rankings. It helped that they won their two games last week. And that the starters get a boost with extended minutes (30.5 mpg/player lat week). It would not mean squat if you are not consistent though (read: Neil Pascual). Del Rosario easily crosses that line (14 pts, 5 rebs, vs CSJL, 8/8; 14 pts, 6/6 fg, 9 rebs, vs SSCR, 8/10). Even his turnover numbers are constant (4.5 topg last week).

8. Bryan Faundo (CSJL) – You might have noticed by now that the prevailing trend this week are double-doubles (15 pts, 11 rebs vs MIT, 8/8) or at least near double-doubles (look: Daa). What spells the difference are the other splendid things you did in that game (50% fg, 2 assts).

9. Jayson Nocom (JRU) – What stomach virus? That is so last week. Check out Nocom this week (12 pts, 2/5 3pts, 12 rebs vs UPHD, 8/8).

10. Dino Daa (CSJL) – The do-it-all Daa has compensated, at least in the game against MIT (8/8), what other teammates have failed to deliver (19 pts, 7/12 fgs, 9 rebs, 2 assts, 2 blks).

may chance pa na makapasok si RJ Jazul in place of Co...

stats-wise, pasok na si hayes at dela pena, kahit si aljamal.

buti nalang hindi na qualified si ekwe, give chance to others.

NCAA Power Rankings (Week 8): Dela Peña Makes It Two In A Row

1. (1) Kelvin dela Peña (MIT) – Typhoon Egay should take the number one spot for wreaking havoc even if it barely touched the Philippine area of responsibility and for disrupting everybody’s schedules. Take about an outside threat. Since it is a lean week, let us review the season so far of a player that has caught everyone’s attention. Someone left in the comments, how many near triple-doubles dela Peña already have? But the question is, how do you count a near triple-double? In NBA Live (or any other stat cruncher would tell you), you do not get bonus points if you "just" make 16 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists against UPHD (8/15) for example. Even Ricky Davis had to pad his own stats because he is aware that "almost there" does not count. Unlike written exams, there is no such thing as effort points. So, how would you grade someone who has a 13-7-7 statline on opening day (vs CSJL, 6/23), 19-10-5 against JRU (7/6), 7-12-6 versus SSCR (7/13), and an average of 17.3-8-8.7 the last three games? But here is the thing. KdP may not be adding anything in the NCAA record books with his near-hits, but as stated last week, he is a frontrunner in the individual record that matters the most.

2. Jim Viray (SSCR) – Speaking of personal achievements, here is one for the books. Viray presently holds the distinction of having the most three-points made in a game (6 vs CSB, 8/15) for season 83, which was good for 23 points in a particularly slow day.

3. Kris Robles (CSB) – Here is another feat, although it is not as grand as the two aforementioned. Robles is the only Blazer that has reached the upper five of the rankings, and a top three slot at that, since the start of the season (19 pts, 4/6 3pts vs SSCR, 8/15).

4. (4) Sean Co (MIT) – This came as a surprise to me, but at the same time, it should not. Co has finally found the confidence to remain consistent ( 18.3 ppg, 55% fg, 82% ft the last three games) shooting-wise.

5. Ronald Reyes (UPHD) – If I had said this before, I would reiterate once more. Reyes has emerged to be more than just one of Altas coach Bai Cristobal's scoring guards (7 pts, 13 rebs, 4 assts, 3 stls vs MIT, 8/15).

6. Rommel Balboa (UPHD) – Balboa made the most out of the playing time given to him last week with a double-double (13 pts, 10 rebs vs MIT).

7. Michael Kong (UPHD) – This is unprecedented. Three Altas in the countdown. Then again, it just happened because three other teams did not get to play last week, and that one of them (SBC) was not part of the itinerary in the first place. Pretty normal day for Kong last Wednesday (15 pts, 7/10 fg, 4 rebs, 4 tos vs MIT), even if the weather was not.

8. (3) Jason Ballesteros (SSCR) – The most Ballesteros could do at this point of the season is to be second-best behind Sam Ekwe (second in rebounds, 12.6 rpg, and blocks, 2.8 bpg) and that is actually a good thing. With the big Red Lion out of the running for individual awards, the lanky Stag might just bag a Mythical Five first team spot.

9. Gilbert Bulawan (SSCR) – You know I am just forcing it when on other days 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists (vs CSB, 8/15) do not mean much.

10. (5) Jonathan Banal (MIT) – The tenth place for this week was closely fought between two teammates, Banal (12 pts, 4 assts vs UPHD, 8/15) and Neil Pascual (10 pts, 7 rebs, 5 tos vs UPHD, 8/15). Why Banal? He was in focal points of the match. For one, he gave the Cardinals the highest lead of the game with that pump of the fist providing the exclamation point.

Ano problema bakit si Aljamal di pwede maging MVP. Besides deserving naman sya.
