PGMA honors 10 outstanding RP students
THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2007 | EDUCATION

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo presented today the 2007 Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) awards to the winners of the annual search for young students committed to moral leadership, social responsibility, and academic and professional excellence.

The TOSP is organized by the RFM Foundation, National Book Store and the Rotary Club of Makati Central in cooperation with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The President handed out trophies to the awardees in simple ceremonies this afternoon at the Rizal Hall of Malacanang.

Assisting the President were CHED chairman Carlito Puno, RFM chairman Jose Concepcion Jr., RFM Corporation president Jose Ma. Concepcion III, RFM Foundation president Marie Concepcion Young, and National Book Store president Alfredo Ramos.

In her message sent earlier to the organizers, the President said the young awardees are the best exemplars of what national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal had described as the hope of the country, having excelled not only in their studies but also in fulfilling their social responsibilities.

"With this kind of young citizens, I am confident that our country will have a brighter future," the President said in her message.

The 10 awardees, considered as role models and inspiration for the Filipino youth, were chosen from among 30 finalists who recently graduated from various schools in the country.

The awardees were Cherrie Atilano (Leyte State University), Michael Gamalinda (University of the Philippines- Los Banos), Dennis Umali (UPLB), Herbert Klaus Martin Hallig (De La Salle University-Manila) , Luis Andres Abad (Ateneo de Manila University);

Julie Lucille del Valle (Ateneo de Naga University), Ben Secretario (Ateneo de Naga University), Roma Padua (Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion-Roxas City), Mark Carlo Pahati (University of San Jose Recoletos), and Mary Kathryn Quinon (University of the Philippines in the Visayas).
Aside from the trophies, the awardees also received P20,000 each in cash.

^^Just a note wala ring taga UP diliman, the Other year wala ring taga Ateneo and last 2005 wala ulit taga UP diliman (which those years may taga UST)

TOSP does not represent the quality of the school per se. Eto naman estudyanteng to oh. tsk

There was an Atenean last year, particularly an ADMU student. She's Karina Kellda Centeno, BS Management Honors - Magna Cum Laude.

In 2005, 2 ADMU students made it. Patrick Echevarria and Tina Vaswani.

In 2004, Charlotte Castillo, BS Physics, and Class Valedictorian was likewise in the top 10.

^^ 2 taga-UPD and 1 UPM ang nakasali sa 20 finalists sa TOSP-NCR (Regionals ng TOSP). 1 from UPD and 1 from UPM lang ang nakasali sa Top 10 ng NCR. And out of the Top 10 ng NCR, 4 lang ang ipinadala sa Top 30 Finalists ng National Selections. Wala sa 4 na napili yung isang taga-UPD and taga-UPM. So ayun. =)

Congrats to all the deserving winners of this ANTI-NCR search. Soon enough, the Rizal award will be regarded more valuable than TOSP. Why? Too much AFFIRMATIVE ACTION on the big universities of NCR and a growing discrimination for their students.

Ibalik sa dati ang TOSP, tama na yun pagka makaprobinsya ng alumni and organizers. The award should go to whoever deserves it. Let's play it fair and square.

The victim here are the NCR students. Given equal playing field, NCR will dominate, and this is a fact that the organizers and alumni dont want to confront.. They do all their best to distribute the 10 slots per region to show that academic excellence in the Philippines is equally distributed. Wake up. It is not equal. Stop the illusions. NCR is NCR.

Wake up TOSP.. why discriminate NCR?! Just because some schools from the provinces said "we dont want join anymore since we know UP, ADMU, DLSU and UST will win." - so? kaya kahit 2-3 magaling from these schools, dapat isa *** piliin? and in the nationals, dapat 2 *** manalo? Crap.

Make the selection process strict, and again, give the NCR students the same credit you give to provincials.

It is better to be just a finalist from an unbiased selection of 30, than be a winner/benefactor of this so famous phenomena in TOSP called AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.

hehe, sometimes i ask this each time i see any write ups about philippines universities. when they mention, UP and Ateneo, i expect that DLSU will be mentioned as well. :D

tulad nung Reader's Digest, i thought it's not complete coz Ateneo was not included.

madalas kong mabasa UP, Ateneo and De La Salle. pag meron and after De La Salle, i expect it's UST. i don't know why.
