View Full Version : Delinquent Pinoy Youths Living Abroad Sent Back To Pinas- Does It Do Them Any GOOD?

Filipino immigrant parents sometimes get caught up in pursuit of the American Dream. The house, the cars, the clothes. Parents think that providing their children with material things that they (the parents) maybe never had in Pinas growing up will do the trick. Parents are soo busy with working to get ahead in their adopted country that they end up not really knowing what their children are up to or turning into. Sometimes its too late and they've lost control of their teens.

Filipino parents like these sometimes decide to send back their childen to Pinas thinking that this will change the children's bad ways-that they'll straighten up somehow because of Filipino values in Pinas.

Does this happen to Pinoy teens living in other countries besides the USA? Do you see 'em getting sent back home to Pinas for acting out of control and such.

Heard of stories were they became worse in Pinas?
OR
Heard of stories were they did a complete 180 and turned they're life around because of being in Pinas?

Would like to hear your stories and opinions :D

well, to tell you the truth i was born in the US, in SFO actually....but grew up in the phil coz my parents never as in NEVER want their child growing up like those kids

well, about sending them in the philippines sometime it works, coz it will teach them responsibilities and stuff

but here in the phil....well to your disappointment, we are ahead of you guys in terms of gimiks and actually fun

did you know that we already had Playstation 2 before you guys even had it this October-November?

and you can see filipinos driving around with their Lexus and SUVs

and hanging around at Starbucks

the latest cellphones, with about 3 dozen brand names
have you seen the 9110 series of Nokia? well it's been 2 years now and still, not one....yup not one of that unit ever reached the US
and oh yeah...talk about Pentium 4 pcs and macs

so magpapatalo ba kami from the US.....nope

well, maybe that also gave you an idea.....of kids turning more worse.....hmmmm, well kung ako sa iyo sa pinas ka na lang, inday

I think it happens anywhere. That's what some of my barkada's parents used to tell them... "sige, magloko ka pa at pababalikin na kita sa Pinas." Some parents think that by giving this ultimatum to their kids, their kids will straighten out for fear of being sent back here. What they don't know is most pinoy teens (or at least, from what i know) reply in their minds, "sige, pabalikin mo ko dun... mas masaya dun... mas maraming gimik, wala pang bantay."
Several of my barkadas back in high school were sent back to Manila (or their respective provinces) because of being delinquent. But instead of becoming better, lalo lang lumala.

Topnotch:

How come your parents decided to raise you in Pinas? Values, more household help because of relatives and maids, easier financially? Certainly it is very hard to raise kids here unless you are a two income family. I was raised here by a single parent and it was a hard life.

You guys in ASIA always have the latest in hardware technology. Cellphone tech SUCKS big time here in the States. It'll be about three to four years before they introduce into American markets what's already out there in Pinas.

About your comment on Filipinos in Pinas that drive Lexus', carry the latest cellphones and hang at Starbucks...I wonder what percentage of the population of Filipinos in Pinas get to do that? Could you look up the statistics for me sometime? :D

Talagang mahirap ang situacion nang mga MASA sa Pinas.

I don't think I would want to be a "MASA" in Pinas...I'd rather be a "MASA" here in the States.

Maybe you're right about the news we get here from Pinas. It is always something negative and maybe a bit too blown out of proportion...It would be nice to get something positive featured about the motherland for a change.

Alam mo Topnotch wag ka sanang ma offend pero ang mga comments mo paminsan kala mo laging nakikipag laban ang tao sayo na masmagaling dito sa States at ang Pinas ay walang kuwenta...bakit ka ganoon? You must have encountered or know a lot of very mean and snooty balikbayans that really annoyed and irritated the hell out of you. You always sound so defensive about Pinas all the time...CHILL OUT man...grab a beer and a cigarette and chill...parang laging kumukulo dugo mo pag nag re reply ka....bwahhaha...nakakatawa lang kasi paminsan. Baka ma high blood pressure ka pa.

Not all Pinoys in the States think they're the center of the Universe. Yung nga lang mayroong mga mayayabang dito na kala mo kung sino na pag bisita diyan sa Pinas eh kala na lahat nang Pinoy diyan na ganoon lahat ang mga ugali nang Pinoys abroad. Not true. Don't over generalize everybody.

Life in Pinas or Life in the States has many advantages and disadvantages. Depende lang sa gusto nang tao kung saan mas iige ang buhay nila :D

Meron din naman siguro... but none that i know of. As i said earlier, several of my high school barkadas were sent back here dahil sa mga kalokohan nila but they just became worse here... so their parents just took them back. he he he...

topnotch: anong college ka DLSU??

Masyadong maraming temptations dito sa Pinas. If you're a delinquent teen in America, I think mas lalong magiging delinquent siya pag narito sa Philippines. The Philippines is actually a cool place to live in for a young person.

Think about it, Manila has a very rich, vibrant (and some would say, decadent) nightlife. All the high-tech material goods, cars, food and the like are pretty much plentiful here. Nandito rin ang drugs, prostitution, etc.

It really depends kung kanino ihahabilin yung teen. It also depends on him kung kaya niyang labanan ang temptations dito. :)

I can think of one case where a Fil-Am I knew from a major US metropolitan area was sent back to the Phils to keep them from hanging out with the wrong crowd. Gang related stuff, I believe. (What *IS* it with you urban Fil-Ams? ;) )

This person eventually returned to the States but to a different city, and is now doing well in their profession. Does this count as a turnaround?

f0r5aK3n,

You turned out just fine. Don't get me wrong. I know that Fil-Ams from the big cities are good folks.

But seriously, what is it with the "gang" thing? Are there Filipino gangs in your area? Do they clash with other gangs of different ethnicity? I'd be curious to hear some opinions. Anyone?

Boy are there Filipino Gangs here in So Cal...where is Mr. Belat Boy...I'm sure he knows...and Mexican gangs in LA, and Armenian gangs in Glendale and the Valley, and Black gangs in Compton and Inglewood and Indian gangs in Artesia...there's the URBAN and the SUBURBAN, too.

Hmm...Pinoy gangs...who did they clash with...they got along well with Mexican and Black gangs...hmm...Kuya Jon do you know?

Pinoy Urban gang names range from Pinoy Reyal, Satanas, Flipside...uhmm...I don't know what else.

Pinoy Suburban gang names are like BNG and that's all I knew from highschool...I'm sure there are more.

Dude I ended up okay, too...although there was an instance in jr. high that I could've ended up in a crowd that sorta became a pinay slutty ho bag crew...thank God for Lola's firm grip on me...other than that I grew up a normal goody goody highschool school girl...I got involved and was on the drill team and all that.

Some ex gang member "veterano" from a hardcore pinoy gang courted me once...flattering to me back then in jr. high but hella scary when I think of it now...he was like 19 or 20 and I was barely 14. Hello...STATUTORY RAPE!

Oh those were the days...like what 5 years ago...Class of 1996...remembering the jr. high and highschool scene...hardcore gangs, and then dancing crews became the big thing...now it's ravers...am I right or am I wrong? Kuya Jon??

Hey that's what public highschool in urban america is like...what an unforgettable/one of a kind/awesome experience...you learn soo much...really...no joke...really interesting...I wouldn't want my kids going to a private school...seriously.

I think the gang thing goes way back to the Phils. I remember when these peeps from the so called "fraternities" tried to recruit me. They were like.. no HaZing if you go with us to a rumble later or whatever. It never interested me then, and when I moved to the US, didn't interest me either. It's a way of "belonging" I think.

In Chicago, most Filipino gangs always have conflicts with Vietnamese gangs, as far as I know. I never heard of any stories about conflicts with other ethnic gangs.

Reggie, sorry, dunno the answer to the questions you asked. Honestly, I was too good back in highschool. I went to school and then I went home... hehehe... whatever extracurricular stuff was going on at school, I HAD no idea. Plus, the neighborhood I lived in was quiet... (Jewish neighborhood)

Mr. Q

Hey tell us about where you grew up? How was it? Didn't you say you grew up in the South or something like that? Were there any gangs then?

Kuya Jon: Really wow...you were a school boy? Cooool.
