Full circle.

I am in the hallways of International School Manila supervising a photo shoot for HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, working with a bunch of bright-eyed teenagers, many of whom, are doing their first theater production. I, on the other hand, have spent a lifetime in professional theater – a profession that auspiciously began in theseself - same halls.

I was a high school Junior at International School when I was literally collared by my U. S. History teacher, Ruth Butler, to join the school’s production of –“Oklahoma”. That experience changed the course of my life.

Up until then, I didn’t quite fit in. I wasn’t a jock, I wasn’t a brainiac. I wasn’t a cool dude. In fact, I skipped recess and hid in the art room so no one would notice I didn’t have a’barkada. But when I found myself performing onstage, it was like a hundred light bulbs on a marquee lit up! I had found my niche – my corner of the sky!

That was almost three decades ago and, since then, I have worked with every major theater group in the country, have essayed over 50 leading roles, performed for five presidents, received 15-minute ovations abroad, co-founded Trumpets, produced major original works and been acknowledged as “The King of Philippine Musical Theater.”

Despite all these accolades, however, nothing brings me more fulfillment than working with young people”– paving the way for them to enter the same wonderful world I blundered into all those years ago.

In 1993, Trumpets began Playshop, a summer theater workshop. Spearheaded by Butch Jimenez and myself, it started
as a basic acting class with 20 students. Over the years, it has grown remarkably – averaging 1,200 students every summer and expanding its curriculum to include courses like Street Dancing, Voice, Newscasting, Modeling and Musical Theater.

Despite Playshop’s phenomenal growth, one nagging question still remained after each summer’s workshop was over – What’s next? What would happen to this new crop of budding thespians? What would these kids do with their newly awakened sense of theater and their newly acquired skills?

Though many could very well move on to professional productions, there are clearly not enough productions that could cast all these children. I mean, you can only do so much of–“Sound of Music,” “Annie” or “King and I.”

And there is even more of a dearth of material for kids who are “too old to play children and too young to play adults”.

One solution was to set up alternative outlets and vehicles for these Playshoppers’ energies. A talent agency under my company Stages put together and managed professional acts featuring some of Playshop’s graduates, notably the kiddy singing group Playshop Kids, the boy band 17:28 and pop singer Christian Bautista.

But that wasn’t really what I had in mind… what I really truly wanted.

My real dream was to establish a youth-based theater company. At the very least, come up with at least one exceptional youth based theater production.

Then, like manna from heaven, I received word that Disney’s biggest TV movie hit ever,’“High School Musical,” had been adapted into a stage musical and was available for staging. At last, a theater production perfect for jumpstarting my dream!

I wasted no time acquiring the rights.

But what is “High School Musical” and why all the hoopla and brouhaha about it? Well, if you are over 25 years old, the best justification I can offer is that it is the “Grease” of this generation. The coming-of-age breakthrough high school musical of this millennium

“High School Musical” has all the elements of great entertainment”– a straightforward yet heartwarming story, endearing characters, lots of laughs, catchy tunes, show stopping production numbers and good clean fun.

It is about a teenage boy (a jock) and a teenage girl (a brainiac) who decide to audition for a high school musical. In so doing, they break away from their personal comfort zones, go against everyone’s expectations and truly find themselves. It is about young hopes, young dreams and young love. In short, “High School Musical” is something every pre-teen and teenager can relate to on some level or other.

It is no wonder then that throngs of teenagers showed up for our auditions. From these 300 hopefuls, terpsichorean ’tween star Sam Concepcion and the exceptional Cheska Ortega emerged to play the parts of lead characters Troy Bolton and Gabriela Montez. Both are Playshop graduates… as are many of the other cast members.

The young cast has been working hard to come up with a great show and the audience – both young and young-at-heart – should expect nothing less than the best.

This dream project has a professional creative and production team, a live band, sets and costumes, lights and sounds and all the other elements that make a hit.

What more could anyone ask for?

“High School Musical” is a dream come true for me”– three times over! I get a chance to revisit my own coming of age story… I have my hoped for youth-based theater production which may well be the first of many… and, last but not least, I have the answer to the question “What’s next?” as a new generation of thespians gets their chance to “break free, fly, soar and reach for the stars.”

The movie has been called cheesy, silly, and ungainly, but no withering reviews by any hard-to-please critic apply to the stage version, at least not the one currently running at the Meralco Threater until July 15th. Mounted by STAGES and Trumpets Playshop, High School Musical On Stage is the kind of play that you will want to see over and over again--even on a single night.

The musical within a musical plays out like a vehicle back to the halls of high school, where differences were frowned upon and “celebrate diversity” was never a flyer on the wall. Cliques reigned and peer pressure was so thick, very few dared to cross over from one group to another. Brainiacs simply didn’t mix with the jockasses, and the captain ball wasn’t supposed to be friends with a newcomer who likes singing. Of course, as any pop culture vulture knows by now, that’s what happens to Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, who eventually dare to be true to themselves. But not without misgivings, which they only get over once everyone else gets with the program.

The plot is never anything but wholesome. Although this is high school (or at least the setting is), the production accommodates even the kindergartners. No jaw-dropping scenes of hormones gone haywire here—nothing of the sort you’d hear about during gossip breaks between chemistry and world history. Why, the audience is denied a kiss between the main characters, and those more romantically inclined could only sigh. Director Audie Gemora knew how to tickle insides just so, without offending sensibilities of parents who may have brought their young ‘uns.

Sam Concepcion, doubtless one of the most popular teen heartthrobs today (just to judge from the number of hits his pages in ClickTheCity.com register), immediately impresses with how his singing chops have gotten better since he won that singing contest on a TV network. Although everyone else on the basketball team his character leads seems to be taller than him, it’s Sam who stands tall whenever his Troy gives in to his inner singer. He juggles singing and dribbling like it was the easiest thing in the world.

By the time Troy and Gabriella prove they can play beautiful music together (literally and otherwise), everyone’s singing along, too. It’s not like they can help it. The soundtrack in itself is a phenomenon, and with a cast of equally talented young crooners who sing better than the Disney cast (who, reportedly, were only lip-syncing), the popular tracks were resounding throughout the theater. There were also some kids who stood up to dance and follow the moves of the actors, as choreographed splendidly by Chinnie Nepomuceno. Before long, the night was like one big sing-along. That, and a dance session, too.

"It was fantastic to see such young faces, all 40 of them, ruling the stage with so much enthusiasm," says music VJ Iya Villania, who watched the premiere of HSM. "It is definitely a great watch for the whole family."

Indeed, celebrity parents like Jamie Rivera, Anthony and Maricel Pangilinan, Yayo Aguila, Vicky Belo, among others, enjoyed watching HSM with their children. Singers Bituin Escalante, Karylle, Raki Vega, Reymond Sajor, Carlo Orosa, Aaron Agassi, Khalil Kaimo, Paolo Valenciano and young TV hosts Princess Ryan and Edgar Allan Guzman were also spotted at the premiere.

With a petite frame that belies her substantial, wonderful voice, Cheska Ortega played Gabriella Montez to perfection. Together, she and Sam beautifully rendered duets like “When There Was Me and You,” “Breaking Free,” and “I Can't Take My Eyes Off You.”

Alex Godinez, niece to Martin Nievera, proved that performing is truly in her genes as she flounced onstage as the uber-competitive, sometimes snooty, and yet still so charming-you-can’t-hate-her Sharpay Evans, while TV personality PJ Valerio made an audacious debut in theater as Sharpay’s sib Ryan Evans.

Theater actress Sheila Francisco, who received acclaims for her portrayal of Bloody Mary in the London staging of South Pacific, was sensational as the Drama Club moderator Mrs. Darbus, while Jeff Arcilla essayed a very effective disciplinarian figure in Coach Bolton. He later made audiences smile as he showed his more comical side, singing a snippet and sashaying with Ms. Francisco.

Warmly applauded by the showgoers were the dance spots like “Start of Something New,” “Stick to the Status Quo,” “We're All in this Together,” and most especially, the mega-mix cum curtain call.
