The Rock is a big Evangelion fan. He's not exactly sure why, maybe it's because he could sympathize with Shinji in the early episodes, maybe it's because the Evas all look cool:cool:, or maybe because Misato, Rei, and Asuka are all hot chicks!:D The series started off really good, it just gets screwed up in the middle. The "Death and Rebirth" OAV had an opportunity to fix things, instead it became even stranger than ever!:confused:

Still, The Rock loves EVA, he even has a bunch of EVA JPEGS, the "Cruel Angel Thesis" a.k.a. the theme to Evangelion in MD format, and a bunch of icons in hi desktop right now are EVA characters.:cool: The Rock only wishes he had toys of Unit 00, Unit 01, Unit 02, or all of them!

One of the reasons why I love anime is that it makes me think, and EVA is not an exception. Not to mention that its so real and philosophical. Rei is one of my favorite characters and although I don't like Asuka that much, I have to say watching her slowly collapse was heartbreaking. Shinji is an annoying character but after everything he's been through, I really can't blame him for acting like such a...a...wimp.

One of my most favorite characters is Kaworu. He and Shinji makes such a good pair!

Alot of people thought mahilig ako sa anime....pero ang totoo ay EVA lang ang gusto ko...why?

very mature, maganda yung twist, nice start ("medias res (tama ba yung spelling?)," not the stereotype kind of story, sangkatutak na conflicts (natue, others, their own selves), Each character is very mysterios...in fact.. the whole EVA show is mysterious (lalu na yung dead sea scroll stuffs)......AT MARAMI PANG IBA!

REI & KAWORU!!!!! the best! (not as partners nor because they have common traits, but as unique indiviuals & intriguing personality )

ASTIG MAG BERSERK ng UNIT 1
and the "creature" that lies beneath the iron skin
PINAKA ASTIG NA EVA is yung.....black (unit 4 ba yun)

different perspective kung ano ang angels (itsura at yung reason ng pagbalik ng mga anghel)
and of course....KAWORU(PERIOD)(pinakamatinong angel? haha)

i mean it's probably the best animé ever released ( no apologies to all Rurouni Kenshin and Fushigi Yuugi fans... ito lang talaga ang TOTOO :lol: )!!! it has everything you want in an animé... great artwork, excellent plot, exquisite music and the most superb cast ever assembled!?! :cool:

ok... so it's a little complicated at first, but once you see it... you're instantly hooked!?! Shinji and the rest of the gang are just like all of us... facing the course of life in the only way they know how...

I love EVA. I still can't figure out why, maybe it's the hoplessness of it all. Maybe it's because all the characters are all fleshed out. Or maybe it's just because the story has so many angles that I had to watch the series several times before I could make heads or tails of it.

wo-hohoho... i definitely have watched and followed that show. although the theme may be a bit dark, it was nice just to kick back at it, and let everything just fall into place. i liked the artwork and the fact that it is somewhat based on religion.

hello!!! i think EVA is the best animé series ever!?! i mean, the story is excellently crafted, the artwork is superb and you got the best cast ever assembled for an animé series!?! i just :inluv: this series!!! :cool:

the one thing i also liked abt it is that every character in the series represents all the angst and depression we all feel in this world! i mean, i almost cried during eps. 25-26 becoz everything they've said were so true! i mean, lahat na nararamdaman ni shinji, misato, asuka at rei... halos napagdaanan ko... how we all hate to be left alone, to be needed so much, to be good in front of other... and not to be needed at all!?! if you guys need psychological advice... just watch this series and you'll realize how irony and blessed your life is...

may i add that the manga series of EVA is as good as the series.. if not better!?! sa manga kasi, it focuses more on the character development of the cast, rather than the complexities of the plot. like for ex. less-angst and very open dito si shinji... as in sobrang sarcastic at nakikipag-away sya kay asuka at misato pag napipikon na sya... at saka may crush sya kay rei dito :*) do check it out!!!

i think the reason why it's such a hit is becoz of the mystery it has on all of us. every character represents all our angsts and depressions towards ourselves and life in general...

i mean, when i watched Eps. 25-26, i almost cried becoz i felt what shinji, rei, asuka and misato were going through... as in lahat ng pinagdaanan nila sa buhay, naranasan ko na rin... it's like re-evaluating your life... and i think that's one of the main appeals of the show... the way it makes you think why you're here in this world and what is the purpose of your existence...

PS: Quasar, i too know someone who reminds me of shinji... kaya lang iritado ako sa kanya... i wish he was more like shinji... gwapo na, EVA pilot pa!!! :lol:

What I'm looking is an anime that what a very mysterious, unique, intriguing, self-relating, at marami pang iba! yup!!! especially the music!!! Yoko Kanno is a musical genius!!! Maaya Sakamoto (Hitomo Kanzaki in the series) is one of the best!!! i :love: her so much!!! story-wise, if you like fantasy-action-love story themed animés, then this one is for you!!

Shin Seiki Evangelion is bar none the best anime series I've ever seen. There is nothing else out there which can compete with the complex story, the depth of characterization, or the sheer mind blowing scope of it all. Personally, I find the humanity of the series to be it's finest component. These characters do not exemplify any virtue, they are not brave in excess, or holier than thou, or adherent to a moral code no one else can possibly measure up to, rather they are human in the best and worst sense of the word. Shinji's crippling cowardice, Asuka's bossiness, and Rei's all out bizarre attitude - we may not like these aspects of the characters, but they are more or less, mirrors to ourselves.
Let me recommend the Anipike Evangelion general information sites to viewers. There's a wealth of information on the Net about the things implied in the series but never discussed directly (i.e. which episode is based around Einstein’s Theory of Relativity; what that weird pattern thing is that appears during the opening and is also inscribed on the roof of Gendo Ikari's office etc...).

i love evangelion...it's a really cool series, very philosophical and human! i shelled out a thousand pesos just to complete the entire series (from 0) plus death/rebirth and the end of eva, and well...eva x (yes, that fansub, subtitles...vhs nga lang...meron bang dvd?).
his original jap voice was done by a girl (i think. just like kenshin).

gainax usually puts out a series with very fresh ideas and storylines, not to mention really cool animations. i liked most of the anime's they made. isa na yung kare-kano... :*)

eva is different from the typical anime. its a lot more serious. tapos some of the questions you have in the start gets answered din as the story unfolds, sometimes pa nga it gives way to more questions or it doesn't answer it at all. fave ko si shinji at misato. when i watched the oav, it scared the hell out of me! :eek:

err... DUAL! is a parody of EVA, sort of. EVA-meets-Tenchi, parang ganoon. it's actually good in itself, though EVA is better.

maganda ang escaflowne, if you enjoy fantasy-type stories. no spoilers here, pero i actually liked the ending. it seems so... appropriate. but don't watch the Escaflowne movie, i hear it's so bad compared to the TV series.

another thing about Escaflowne, ang ganda ng scoring at soundtrack. para kang nasa simbahan.

though i think EVA is a great anime, i get the feeling that fans over-hype it, which is too bad, kasi a lot of its merits tends to be overlooked.

i agree that most of the characterizations are really made well. an exception though: touji. and sayang yung character ni kensuke. i actually sympathize with him more than shinji, kasi kensuke's more pathetic. he wanted to be a pilot pero di nangyari, it was touji who was chosen - those kind of stuff.

the designs of the mechas and angels are something else altogether; the machas are different from the Gundam school of mecha design, the angels are really scary.

i don't like the way they drew asuka and rei though. do you expect me to believe that they're 14 years old??? come on!

there are a lot of Judeo-Christian religious references in the story, which i find a bit weird considering the Japanese's traditional religions are so different. there are some loopholes, but they managed to play with the concepts well.

all in all, the dark, moody atmosphere of EVA was pretty much the reason i got hooked, regardless of the bad tagalog dubbing. plus there's the conspiracy. i love conspiracy theories. not that i believe them.

here's another good anime TV series: Ima, Soko Ni Iru Boku (Now and Then, Here and There.)

it was shown in AXN twice already, i think.
good characterizations, some complex characters (except for a madman megalomaniac i-will-conquer-the-world character again, and a weird faerie/goddess-like girl who looks and acts suspiciously like rei ayanami), really BIG issues (war, rape, human brutality, optimism, loyalty... stuff like that...) and violence. lots of violence. but strangely, the series itself is not gory, and the violent scenes enhances the story. and it has one of the most haunting, ironic, beautiful end credits i saw.

you might want to check it out if AXN shows it again.

Don't believe everything you hear.
The movie is completely different from the series, the Escaflowne mythos retold in two hours. Meaning - darker, bloodier and with a sexier of Hitomi. I mean, better character design.
Much like the Akira movie adaptation, VoE: A Girl in Gaea, was like the apocalypse compressed - a frenzied end of the world battle between two brothers and their ancient war machines.

maybe. but why compress something that's been told at a wonderful pace already? why not make an altogether different story that might have spun off from the series, but is completely independent from it?

and the akira movie wasn't the best argument about compressing how many issues of manga into two-three hours of screen time, kasi andaming details na nawala, may mga holes yung story, and people who are not familiar with the manga will leave the theaters asking a lot of questions.

and i don't like hitomi to be sexy. i dunno, i just don't. she's not exactly asuka langely. but it's a matter of taste, really.

SoliduS: yeah, I'd love to see those cosplay pics.

My fave episode: 24 with Kaoru. Ignoring the massive yaoi infusion, I think this episode is ultimate Eva. The last and mightiest angel enters Nerv HQ to understand humanity, before trying to bring about their extinction. And Kaoru's line, "Everyone has an AT Field" was a mega shocker.

The standouts in NG:Evangelion

The Women - Misato, Ayanami, Asuka even Ritsuko and Mya. How can anyone not keep their eye on the screen with such beautifully drawn characters.

The Mecha Design - I am absolutely awestruck how revolutionay the design of the Eva 01 when I first saw this and actually bought the action figure (which also rocks BTW)

The story - one word - controversial. After viewing collection 0:8, and being so used to animes that are sort of "closed" after the final episode - NGE will force you to go back to collection 0:1 and view the series all over again. Thank God for the 2 follow up movies (Death/Rebirth and End of Evangelion)

Most memorable scenes - when Asuka was lying unconscious in the hospital , Shinji witnessing her in her naked glory and sort of just releasing himself in a moment of weakness and hating himself for it. How can anyone not emphatize with with this boy after what he had been thru in the initial episodes.

Another one - I was devastated when they had to kill Misato (while protecting Shinji) during Seele's invasion of Nerv.

Most Memorable battles - I thought the Evas were just mechas but after witnessing that "gross" eating scene. Eww.
Also during Seele's invasion and Asuka's EVA 02's umbilical cable was cut off and she has to dispose Seele's version of the Evas (Eva 05-13 - with S2 engine) in 5 minutes. Awesome!


Whats your take on the End of Evangelion? Are Shinji and Asuka the only survivors? Are they the new Adam and Eve?

The 2 movies are well worth it and sort of ties the TV series together. I think the driving force for Gainax releasing the 2 films is fan clamor for some sort of closure in the series (even then its still sort of open ended hence the various discussion among fandom in the internet). I think some went to the extent of making EVA a cult.

Anno was pissed at everyone who didn't like it, so he created a movie with a tremendously ambiguous ending that forced you to reach your own conclusions about what really happened.

Can someone give an interpretation of Love is Destructive and One More Final? I've been browsing through pages of Eva and somehow I get different interpretations. What seems most common though is that the Neon Genesis had pushed through, and the Neon Genesis was based on Shinji's concept of his ideal world.

Evangelion suffers from the same problem as Samurai x, too much unecessary talk and not enough action. But unlike
Samx, what little action Evangelion has is very intense and of very good quality. Another problem with Evanglion is the fight scenes are too fast. You can't enjoy them well.

with regards to anticentipede's comments... okay, we all know that EVA's storyline is indeed not your typical "my-kungfu-is-better-than-your-kungfu" anime... and i think that's what made it a classic and truly one of the best (i think it is THE best!!!) animes ever created... and i think it basically has all the elements of a great story... and in my opinion... and depending in my own expertise on anime... nobody would even DARE compare EVA to DBZ... story-wise, DBZ has one of the most "predictable" plots ever... nobody cares if Gokou dies coz we all know he'll return to life eventually... and come on!!! even the way they fight is so predictable... no character development whatsoever (di included ang fighting skills ** ha!!!)... and artwork-wise... EVA is lightyears away from DBZ (but then, it was created in the late 80s)... soundtrack is plausible... but makes no sense at all!!! and lastly... IT'S TOO FREAKINGLY LONG!!! i mean how many episodes is this series... 200??? i mean, nakakasawa na!!! the series has been in this country for 10 years na!!! will it ever end??? i hope so!!!

Everybody cared when Goku died in the cell saga because they knew Goku can be brought back to life only once. Everybody cared when he died the first time. Halatang hindi ka nanonood ng DBZ kaya hindi mo alam na napakaganda ng character development ng DBZ. Sa Eva puro kalokohan ang mga story ng mga character. Puro corny. The artwork of Eva suffers from the same grotesque character drawings of samurai x. Maganda nga ang mga building at ibang mga structure. Pero sa action at charcters panis ang Eva sa DBZ by lightyears.

Hindi na pwedeng habaan ang story ng Eva dahil masyadong bulok at sabog sabog ang story ng EVa kaya tinapos na kaagad. Unlike eva the story of eva leaves the audience a feeling of overwhelming from each of the pilot's, charcter background and unlike your DBZ, it leaves you empty... You can't think of anything in DBZ because the story is plain simple.... the DBZ theme "Defeat who is more powerful than I" and in DBZ, there is always more powerful than Goku that will come to destroy the earth.... Typical story in every fairytale.... The figh scene is damn too long especially in dialogues between Gokou and Vegeta...
If you think Eva is corny well to me your DBz is more cornier, I watched the DBZ so i can safely say that....
In Eva the fight scene is short but full of intensity, It makes you jump in your couch unlike DBZ, I know what's next... Kami-hami- waaaveeee.... shsss????..... then the enemies burned into pieces....

DBZ was fun, but it wasn't too deep. EVA was really deep, but not as fun as DBZ.

anyone who labels one anime as "the greatest anime" obviously is an idiot, because there are like a thousand anime out there, not to mention hundered thousands of manga. that person probably does not appreciate anime as a whole much either because he/she is stuck with one as being "the best", when in fact, that is so shallow and relative.

i enjoyed both series', but i wouldn't consider either to be the best of all.

frankly, i don't really have much against Eva.... i actually collect the Eva manga... un nga lang hindi ko mahanap *** vol. 6... saan meron?!? and rei is one of my fav anime chars... pero, we all hav to admit, all anime has its flaws, and Eva is not exempt. For one, imho, it shows too much philosophy and too much... psychological reasoning at once. it's supposed 2 b a teenagers series db? pero college students taking up philosophy actually watch eva as... i dunno, research! and i wonder about that... :|

Hey man, hard to find info on Mana, but she came out in the EVA videogame (for PC, PSX, and Sega Saturn) called Iron Maiden/ Girlfriend of Steel . The cels you've seen may (or may not) be just fan works, not OVA grabs.

I never saw her either, I just found her name in one of those 'you know you've been watching too much EVA lists'.

She also holds the title of being the first girl Shinji-kun asks out (though as this is not part of the real EVA storyline, the
Kaoru x Shinji crowd can remain happy in their yaoi).

NGE stands out among other anime titles simply because it makes me think deeper, rather than just be entertained. It unites the good the evil the beautiful the ugly and other stuffs and made a big chunk of Philisophy. I still don't understand the whole story though, maybe some thinking will help. :kitty:

They say Eva is one of the if not THE most controversial anime.
They say Eva is one of the if not THE best anime of all time.

Eva is known for its great fight scenes and also for its long and "boring" steady scenes.
Eva is known for its religious and philosophical undertones and also for its loopholes.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is Hideaki Anno’s thesis to the anime community. Though many have come to accept it, many have also come to hate it. Why this is so simply resides in the individuals approach and grasp of the series.

As for me, I LOVE EVANGELION - from the first episode to the very dark movie (ok... but with the exemption of the Jetalone episode :P) and anything, which has anything to do with it, catches my attention with the exception of cosplay - blasphemy! . But what I love most about it is discussing the mysteries which surround it. pondering and arguing about issues such as "who’s soul is in Evangelion 00, if there is a resident soul at all", "what is the S2 organ?" or the "meaning/symbolism of the train in the context of the story" and ultimately coming up with a hypothesis of your own to answer each question.

When I first watched Evangelion I loved it for its fight scenes not to mention Misato-san. I took it for its mere physical value. Only after stumbling onto a certain message board ( www.animeboards.com ) in my search for a toy - the Perfect Grade Evangelion, did I learn to delve deeper into the true beauty which was Eva. I took "Eva marathons" and watched the series non-stop from episode 1 to movie episode 26. I was able to relate with Shinji and understand why he chose his decision during instrumentality and also why he did what he did in the hospital scene of EoE. I was able to appreciate the minute-long scenes which a lot of people hate - scenes such as Asuka and Rei on the elevator, and Eva 01 holding Kaworu.

But most of all, I learned to love eva for what it is and to see it as a complete piece of work one which is made complete through its mysteries and loopholes.

and on a sidenote I even love Komm Susser Todd - though I do not agree with the lyrics and the lively manner in which it was sung, I can appreciate it when it was used in EoE.

At this point, allow me to share my own opinion on some of the issues raised.

Shinji and Asuka can be considered the as the new Adam and Eve - but only in the symbolic sense and not literally. Now if you remember Rei’s (or was that Yui?) words in EoE "everyone can regain human form as long as they have the will to keep on living" (or something to that degree) so in the symbolic sense, Shinji and Asuka as the first man and woman to regain human form, will spawn the human race by being the living examples to all the other souls which are floating in the sea of LCL that they too can indeed gain human form and live again.

Is Shinji gay? Personally, I don’t think so... but he could be bi :P
Is kaworu gay? No. he is an angel and angels both have the masculine and feminine energies. The only reason he is considered gay is because of the human form he was given - and if you remember his soul was transferred by seele into a human body after they shrunk adam (his original form) and caused 2nd impact. Kaworu’s love for Shinji is probably like Christ’s love for humanity.

Do they make a great couple? Perhaps, but I’d still go for Shinji and Asuka - not that because it is "right" in the moral sense.

Dual! - I didn’t really hate it but I was just laughing as to the similarity. But a question for you guys... is it just me or does Gatekeepers seem a lot like Evangelion? The "gate" resembles an ATField... the Evil gatekeeper kinda resembles Kaworu and Shun’s reaction when he realizes that his bestfriend is his enemy is kinda familiar... come to think of it the name Shun itself is abit close to Shinji. Lol

Eva was dubbed in tagalog? Oh no! blasphemy!!! Btw, I hated the English dub kaworu sounds like a f@g, Shinji’s scream is nothing compared to the effect you get from the sub. And Asuka! Oh no! I hated her voice in the dub. so if you ask me, stick with the sub. you guys are probably used to the subs @ AXN

As for character development, some may say that there were those characters who were not really developed well. But that is the great thing about eva which keeps us going back to it - the mysteries. For if everything were given to us on a silver platter, why bother watching it again or delving into something which is this old ne? although I would pay to see another series of eva, one which concerns only the lesser characters - as long as pen-pen is in it. lol.

actually, Evangelion isn’t about the fight scenes - the fight scenes were just there as a side dish the main course on the other hand, was about human relationships and the struggles which resulted from which. It is for this reason that the tv series’ ended that way.

on the contrary walang sinabi ang gundam sa eva. Why?

1. conventional weapons have no effect on the eva - the eva has an ATField. One which can provide protection even from the N2 weapons mentioned in NGE. And an N2 bomb btw, is more powerful than a nuclear bomb. Besides, only another ATfield can neutralize an ATField. if you have seen Adams shockwave, then you will know that it will take more than a dozen N2's to even damage an eva

2. compare the size of the two - eva’s tower over an aircraft carrier. A gundam on the other hand, is just cargo. If you want to compare their size, put it this way, a compare the size of an eva pilot to that of the entry plug and then the entry plug to the eva itself.

3. an eva is more maneuverable compared to a gundam even if it has the zero system or newtype technology. Nothing beats synchronization and a berserk eva.

4. you say limited ang power ng eva... well thats bec. you havnt heard of the S2 organ which gives the eva unlimited source of energy.

5. an eva can also fly - if you have seen the eva series (white eva's) they have wings. and unit 01 also has wings later on in the movie - 12 wings actually.

6. long range weapon? hey the eva has the lance of longinus. and the good thing is if it flies too far such as the moon, you always have the option of calling it back. and if you have seen the movie, you'll know what i mean.

6. i could go on and on but i'll just cite one last "weapon" the anti-atfield - since the gundam relies on a human pilot, then siguradong patay sya if the eva uses the AATF since the role of the AATF is to destroy the ATField (ATF). and FYI the ATF is what keeps a human being together otherwise his body turns to LCL.

Hello! I still see the EVA craze is still on.... :)

Personally, although I loved the EVA series when it was first shown here back in 1997? tama ba gamera3? yung nasa las pinas pa tayo humihiram at puro fan sub pa ang available di pa na rerelease sa US? Anyway after watching Death and Rebirth and the End of Evangelion on cable, nagsawa na ko after that. No offense to the EVA fans out there of course.

Napanood ko yung movie na End of Evangelion na pinalabas dito on VHS and I was surprised to see that they combined parts of D&R with EoE.

The first part of D&R was basically just the summary of the series. The attack on Nerv by the UN forces happens in the latter part of the movie. The final scene was the one with the central dogma and the EVA 05's flying in a circle above it. What they did was cut out the summary portion of D&R and pasted the NERV invasion on to EoE to make the End of Evangelion movie.

I know about Mana in Girlfriend of Steel. I had a game of it. Found it in one of the King of Games CD that u can buy in Greenhills..:D :D

26 episodes plus Death and Rebirth (which is actually nothing more than a huge recap). Correct me if I'm wrong. Sabi nila yung Love is Destructive at One More Final ay eps. 25-26. Magbasa ka muna ng mga review. Hindi ito typical anime (Gainax is weird, IMHO). Mag-aral ka muna siguro ng cosmological narrations ng creation of life, specifically involving Adam, Lilith and Eve (the Bible does not recognize Lilith nor is she even mentioned there). Oh, and I hope you're game in watching recaps, lots of it. Kareshi Kanoujo lang ang tatalo dito sa paramihan ng recaps. :)
