A pair of middle-aged women in our office got to talk at our table during lunch about their kids. One woman's kid was matriculating in college and said, "sa Ateneo ko na sya paaaralin. Baka kasi maging rebelde sa UP eh." She really sounded weak and stupid as she said those.
They made the mistake of dragging me into their conversation. "Ikaw, _____, dih ba UP ka? Delikado ba talaga doon?"
I said, "delikado kapag hindi ka marunong mag-ingat."
And she said, "Eh yung anak ko hindi sanay sa lansangan eh."
At least she was smart enough to get the point. She quickly turned away and continued talking to her equally witless companion.
"...kasi sabi nila sa UP, como..., que...., otro.....blah...blah..."
UP ought to give me a medal. I do my part in keeping dull entrants to a minimum.

Not from UP, but I've also heard that kind of reasoning before.
What gets my goat is when they make Ateneo as an alternative, na para bang ginawa kaming bagsakan ng mga di marunong mag-ingat. :glee:

No offense to those middle-aged women, but don't they have things that are way more important to talk about?

Here's my all-time favorite:
Sa Ateneo na lang magaaral yung anak ko because his fathers annual income is too high for admission sa UP.

Pare naman. You shouldn't get angry at people because their comments about UP are born out of ignorance. Plain and simple. Sige ka, nakakapa-pangit ang nagagalit. May papalit na sa yo bilang "SEB King"!

Having said this, I think it's time UP got an image consultant, preferably one from Lasalle (or maybe CSB).

What I do is I just keep quiet and try to examine how much their life's insecurities carving in their bare faces....hehe

ahaha.. katuwa naman tong thread na to. napaka laking issue! ahihi.. e anu namn ba kasing paki nyo kung dun nya paaralin anak nya, may sarili syang mga rason, baka d nyo pa alam *** iba.
kung yun ang pananaw nya sa school, *** kayong mggwa, kasi yun ang nageneralize nya based on what she sees, hears, and probably experienced.

Here's a different situation.
A former officemate dropped by. He's a creep but this has little to do with his life-long love affair with Ateneo, and his disdain for UP. He's from Mapua by the way. A below-average Mapuan perhaps.
Again it's a case of parental love gone wrong. His boy is straight Atenean since grade 1. And bright. Graduated second in his high school batch and he passed all his college entrance tests (top-1, top 1-3, top 1-4  ) Anyway, Mr. social climbing creep is now asking for my advice, "How can I convince my son to go to UP?" He's taking his premed, he wants to take medicine, and he wants to study at the Ateneo all thoughout. Obviously my friend was running low on funds to finance an Ateneo education all the way to med proper.
I spent several seconds in reflection. This was a bright kid. He loves his Ateneo, but the father has other worries. I said,
"You kid's bright and I would love to see him go to UP. But I think it'll be best if he stays with the Ateneo, taking a generic course like IS, or maybe some business program. Let his develop his talents and interests some more before both of you make the mistake of investing in a medical degree."

eh so what if lasallians are earning more money?
exactly. lasallians "earn" too much money that it's stealing.
and i'm not yet taken by my emotions that time.

Yup yup. It's not the fault of many students from the "old boys club" if many of them can climb the corporate ladder despite their poor performance at work.
People are you blind? The academic world's "best and the brightest" do not always land at the top of the corporate ladder.
Let's pull some strings.:D
