Congratulations but De La Salle’s passing percentage of 65% is dismal, to say the least. They need to improve on passing rates, this speaks more of the quality standard of the school. I think UP, CIM, XU, PLM and MSU performed better in terms of passing percentage and topnotchers…..

Congratulations but De La Salle’s passing percentage of 65% is dismal, to say the least.
The national passing performance (53%) is equally disappointing, both for the failing examinees and the general public. We need as many qualified physicians as we can get.

Can somebody please post more relevant information and statistics (aside from the Top 10) like number of exam takers from the schools and the schools' passing rates?
Thanks.

"77 out of 119" or "79 out of 93" is still way more impressive than, let's say, "17 out of 17%." I mean, come on, our barrios need more doctors.

And remember, this was during this month's exams.
August is always the month when the best medical schools compete for the top places.
But I'm not taking anything away from the topnotcher. Passing the medical board exams is not a walk in the park, let alone top it.
Is this the first time that DLSU-D topped the medical boards?

But a school can have 100 passers with 1000 takers or mere 10% passing rate (a little of exaggeration). The 100 doctors may be good to our barrios but the 10% rating doesn’t speak well of the school academic standard. That is why we have that so-called diploma mill schools (no, I’m not talking about ust or la salle) and each schools are rated based on passing percentage. It is always good that a school can have both the quantity and the quality. But some school simply preferred to focus on quality by implementing strict quality control of its graduates, the school’s finished products.
That, I think, is the contention here.

The top 1 is a friend & was my classmate in med. school & he's really intelligent. Congratulations Loui!
FYI, College of Medicine of De La Salle is in De La Salle-Health Sciences Campus. It is a separate DLSU system school which offers Medicine & allied health courses. DLSU-Dasma on the other hand offers other undergraduate courses.

@ JeFF1119: Duly noted.
It was last August 2005.
I wonder why a lot of people always confuse DLSU-Dasma and DLS-HSC. Perhaps because they're both located in Dasma, Cavite...

:)
Not enough tax revenues to allow our best University to produce more than 17 new doctors a year, even though that 17 may be the best.
That's why sub-standard private universities have to take up the slack.

Not necessarily "strict quality control", but budget.

If that's the case then ateneo (1/1=100%) has one of the best med schools---now at par with the best: Cebu Institute of Medicine - 100% (27 out of 27).

That's why sub-standard private universities have to take up the slack.
Giving more government subsidy to the best performing state medical school (up mla) should have been the best approach to increase the number of their medical graduates. But again, this effort will have no meaning to our remote barrios who need much medical attention, if these physicians practice their profession abroad or worse, end up as practicing nurse.

UP can never compete based on numbers, then. We only have about 140+ graduates a year. And as stated earlier, most of them (about 85%) take the exam the first chance they get.
Most students take the exams during August, so don't worry, UP produced more than 17 doctors last year. Im just not too excited to ask how many of them are still in the country. :bop:

well, the PRC do have to consider that unlike in eng or accountancy, med school graduates will be handling human life. Nothing more precious than that.
