I stumbled upon this study by the University of Minnesota Graduate School. They classief four universities here in the Philippines as having the highest quality.
GROUP I
Anteneo de Manila (Manila) 1
De la Salle University (Manila) 1
Silliman University (Dumaguete) 2
University of the Philippines (Quezon City) 3

Where is Ateneo? I only see Anteneo there. :(

Ateneo is not included in the list. They fielded an ineligible player.

Then why is La Salle also there? They fielded two ineligibles, right?
And ooops, student_01's here. But UST's not to be seen in group I. Ahihihi. Talo pa ng Silliman.

Thanks for this link to an interesting list.
It is especially interesting for highlighting some of the universities and colleges outside Manila and the NCR.
All in all, I think Filipinos should be mildly encouraged that so many institutions are listed, although that should certainly not lead to complacency.

come to think of it, Silliman is one of the top schools here in the country although not as renowned as UP, ADMU, DLSU or UST....

^^ i agree. Silliman is as good as DLSU, UP, admu and ust.
pero bakit nagka typo error yan. its a simple mistake pero hmmmm.. sana man lang inayos nila speling ng ateneo para kapani paniwala.

Sometimes, you will see similar points in other university sites. For example, I recall one UC Berkeley page where a four-year bachelor's degree is required for PhD applicants from various countries, but those from the Philippines must take some masteral units.

pero, i admit, magaling rin talaga ang siliman, although nasa visayas siya, maganda parin!, ang ganda kaya ng campus nila

Rather than talk about how pretty a campus is, why not look at various factors such as class size, faculty pay and workload, research output, and so forth? I posted something about this in one of the other threads.

also consider research, student selectivity and more importantly how a school performs in various board exams. It speaks a lot about a school's quality standard.....

I haven't checked on the website, but PCC, I think, is Philippine College of Criminology. Unless its the old name of PUP, which is Philippine College of Commerce. I don't know what is PCU's old name though.

PCU's old name was also PCC (Philippine Christian College). Philippine College of Criminology is often assigned the acronym PCCr.

Anteneo de Manila (Manila) 1
De la Salle University (Manila) 1

University of the Philippines (Quezon City) 3
Stop dreaming na kasi. haha *growl* :D

what's big 4? there isnt anyway. and you're not even an academician to prove your worth. baloney. if i have to consider diversity in academe, it will only be UP and UST who has this integrity. Ateneo and DLSU is know for their holistic education. And i consider these 4 universities as the only (sad to say) the better universities in the country. and its not an issue who's the better or not, but its an issue on how can these philppine universities be at least at par with foreign insitutions.

Without its methodology and academic quality indicators, the grouping is at best suspect and anecdotal. It is, therefore, worthless. It makes many PExers feel good though, because it recognizes schools outside the big 4 and NCR. It appears dated, too.

The lack of discussion/posts generated by another thread (Shanghai rankings vs. THES) is an indicator of the lack of appreciation for methodology.
Ahhh..just the feel good mentality.
Studetn01 at Justin06, bakit nga ba 10,000+ lang ang sinabing estudyante ng UST sa THES. Alam naman ng lahat na 25,000+ ang undergraduate students dun ah?

Consider the methodology used by the Shanghai rankings. They are now in partnership with UNESCO to further develop their methodology.
If the methodology of THES was suspect because of their survey approach, what more this one?
The one global ranking that you should considered is the Shanghai rankings.

I guess the said data is not really about rankings, it basically is a perception of the University of Minnesota Graduate School. If you are going to look at it closely, they just identified schools here in the Philippines that U.S. schools, more specificaly UMGS will accept or will have their subjects credited. Again, this is a perception of a single school in the U.S., and that is the UMGS. I for one, as the threadstarter think that this is another one of those rankings. Awareness maybe for the kind of schools that Univ. of Minnesota Grad School perceive to be good schools. That's it. There is no ranking to argue about, perhaps, we can also look at the how other universities in the U.S. or Europe percieve universities here in the Philippines.

How about discussing the meaning of "high quality"? Can this serve as a start?
ave. class size: 25 (12 for language classes)
library size: 1M volumes (for a student pop. of 20,000)
% of faculty with PhDs: 75
faculty pay: equivalent to that of counterparts in the private sector
research output: equivalent to that of, say, NUS
quality and quantity of lab equipment
quality of textbooks (e.g., the latest editions of imported textbooks vs. reprints of older editions; books vs. photocopies or handouts, etc.)

in my opinion false yan lahat haha no university deserves to be high quality in the philippines unless baguhin nila entire curriculum.
Ako nagaral ako sa la salle and half of my subjects werent majors. Biruin mo naman comsci ka tapos tatambakan ka ng basic english 1 , psychology....amp. Dapat lahat ng subjects majors na agad wala nang mga jose rizal studies etc just like the rest of the world. Hindi magiging competitive ang education system natin pag ganyan. Just for my opinion because i'm experiencing intimidation from international graduates already , ang gagaling hehe

Maybe they gave good score on their partner universities in the Philippines. Well, this are just my "maybe" and should not be dealt with such air of great offensive defense (you know what I mean).

Silliman U, founded by the Americans, is an excellent institution of higher learning and deserves to be considered as one of the best in the country. It's good to hear more Philippine universities are being [is the data updated? can't open the link eh] recognized by foreign institutions like the Univ. of Minnesota Graduate School. *okay*
