"Clearly, the basic question is: How can we identify the best universities in the world? From this basic question, we derive several research questions that have to be answered in the context of ranking procedures. First, to which activities are the leagues related?

In the case universities, to teaching or to research? Or to both of these main academic tasks? Second, how do we measure the performance with respect to the chosen activity in an international context? Third, is it possible to conduct these performance measurements for, in fact, all universities in the world in a relatively easy but still reliable and valid way? Fourth, is it possible to express this performance in just one numerical value? If this is the case, then, in principle, a ranking can be made.

This, however, immediately implies a next, fifth, question: what is the statistical significance of the difference in, for instance, ranking position 10 and 15. The sixth question is, like in a football (soccer) league: how many members can or should be covered by a specific league? In other words, at what position of the ranking should the league be ‘closed’?"

As a British person of Chinese "ethnicity", I find this sort of "Humour" totally out of order - and I hope the Moderators will think likewise.

And, incidentally, I am neither snotty (except when I have a cold:mecry:), nor slope-headed (a racist slur from American racists towards all East Asians, including Filipinos). My teeth are probably no more prominent than mac_bolan's:D . (I also deplore drugs, loathe the Chinese Communist government, and am a committed "green" environmentalist).

On the other hand - I admit to perhaps being "condescending", especially when faced with posts/posters such as this.

The fact is, no Filipino University made it to the "Shanghai Rankings".

I guess the Chinese ranking have more faith in the Nobel Prize Winners and Fields Medalist. They even factored in the Social Sciences citations in the ranking game unlike THES. .:rotflmao:

What a pity. I find it sad that so many people are unnecessarily insulting to others - even in jest.

Hatred and prejudice are all too prevalent aspects of human nature. In fact, all the conflicts in the world show that it's much easier to stir up hatred - and much, much harder to turn it down.

Hatred is the hallmark of the Academe, NCAA and UAAP sections.

When presented by a methodology that could not accommodate the Pinoy ego, many resort to name calling.

No wonder Pinoys around the world would rather brag among themselves in their own little enclaves that our race is the best. Brag among OURSELVES that we are the best is the mantra that keeps the Pinoys going.
