NCAA Power Rankings (Week 2)
by JP Abcede
1. (5) Rafael Jazul (CSJL) – There. CSJL coach Louie Alas said it. Jazul is his main man. 20 points, 4/6 3pt fg against SSCR (7/6). End of discussion.

2. David Marcelo (SBC) – Was Sam Ekwe really gone in the MIT game (7/4)? Maybe he just switched jerseys with Marcelo. 10 points, 13 rebounds, seven blocks on 27 minutes. It was as if the Nigerian MVP was with SBC in that game. He now holds the distinction of leading the squad in shots swatted away (3 bpg).
3. Kelvin dela Peña (MIT) – You could not blame the guy for trying. The Cardinals could easily be 3-1 right now as much as they are 1-3 as of the moment. Double-double game versus JRU (19 pts, 10 rebs, 7/6). This he did after playing their second game of the week and the first one was against SBC (7/4) at that.
4. (6) Yousif Aljamal (SBC) – When SBC coach Frankie Lim said that his big guys had to step up, Aljamal delivered. 21 points, seven boards, three assists, and two blocks in their win against MIT (7/4). Not bad.
5. Marvin Hayes (JRU) – Hayes is on the rise. Upped all of his stats across the board last week, spiked by that 14-point, 12-board game against MIT (7/6). Leads the Bombers in rebounds (7.7 rpg).
6. (4) Neil Pascual (MIT) – Despite the minor hiccup in the SBC game (6 pts, 6 rebs, 5 pfs, 7/4), he made for it on the JRU match (18 pts, 86% ft, 9 rebs, 3 blks, 33 mins, 7/6).
7. (2) Rogemar Menor (SBC) – The Red Lions retain their three players per week quota. He was just steady this week with 13 points on 4/8 2pt fg shooting and four rebounds (vs MIT, 7/4).
8. Michael Kong (UPHD) – The token Altas for this week is Kong. He generally played well in last week's win (33% fg, 6 rebs, 5 assts, 2 tos vs CSB, 7/4) despite scoring less points from his game the week prior (13 pts vs CSB, 7/4; 18 pts vs SBC, 6/29). He leads UPHD in almost every department (turnovers included, league high 5.3 tpg) save for blocks and rebounds.
9. Paolo Orbeta (CSB) – The eighth and ninth spots could easily be given to Cardinals Jerby del Rosario and Sean Co, but that is like pushing it. Nevertheless, Orbeta has had two all right games, his latest against UPHD (14 pts, 5 rebs, 7/4). As CSB coach Caloy Garcia said after their win versus MIT (6/27), the challenge for the veteran guard is to be consistent every game.
10. Jason Ballesteros (SSCR) – Ballesteros stays in the radar for collecting 18 rebounds and two blocks versus CSJL (7/6). And because of that, we might get some slack for not putting assist leader Borgie Hermida on the list (5.7 apg). At least the Red Lion got a mention.
2 MIT PLAYERS!!!!!

JULY 18 2007
Freethrows Change Course For Cardinals
by JP Abcede
Mapua Institute of Technology got a little help from the 15-foot line in beating University of Perpetual Help Dalta, 85-75, which needed extra minutes to decide at the desolate Arena on July 18 as both squads finished their NCAA seniors’ basketball first round tied to each other in the standings.

Jonathan Banal found himself in the hot seat as he made two freethrows with no time in the clock to send the game into overtime, 68-all. However, he was just an accessory as the officials mulled over for some time whether Mike Kong’s fifth foul was on the act of shooting, which would have given the rookie Cardinal three tries.
Nevertheless, the Altas could have sealed the bout in regulation if not for five missed charities, four of them in the final four seconds. Gil Manuel sank neither after getting an unsportsmanlike foul against Sean Co. Lee Sang Myeon missed his from a Kelvin dela Peña duty foul.
From there, the Fil-Canadian guard took over as he scored a three-point shot, then fed Banal a triple of his own, and tipped a Co miss to put the game out of reach with a 10-0 burst, 81-75.
Co steered Mapua with 26 points on 56% overall accuracy. Kelvin dela Peña chiseled 23 markers, 15 of them coming from beyond the arc, 14 rebounds, ten assists, four steals, a block, and seven turnovers.
Neil Pascual had a double-double with 11 points, 15 boards, and two rejections. Jerby del Rosario also had the same output of 11.
Bruce Reyes topscored for the Altas with 16 points, five assists, three steals, and six errors. He was completed by Lee, Kong, Manuel, and Raffy Ynion, who all notched ten markers.
Both teams sport 2-4 win-loss records and depending on the outcome of the College of Saint Benilde versus Jose Rizal University matchup the following week, may end up tied for last place along with the Blazers.
It was a battle of who could throw more from the outside at the onset with John Paul Galabin hitting three, his only points of the game, for Perpetual Help and dela Peña and Co sharing theirs, for six made in the first quarter of the total 16 three-pointers made game long.
Reyes hit the chords with a long j for Perpetual’s biggest binge, 37-30, 2:28 in the second period. Mapua Tech largest came in the fourth, the last one from a foiled three-point play of dela Peña off Rommel Balboa’s fifth foul, 62-53.
Dalta was able to lock in their defense as they forced MIT to consecutive turnovers to go up, 65-64, from a Kong trey from the corner pocket. This was followed by a Kong inbound to Manuel alley-oop, 2:55.
Banal found del Rosario at the corner for a layup, while Lee secured one of two charities to make it 68-66, in favor of the Las Piñas-based team. After some foiled possessions, Manuel rebounded a Reyes drive as Co went for a desperate reach with the refs assessing it as an unsportsmanlike.
With UPHD keeping the leather and almost getting whistled for a five-second violation, Lee missed his two freebies as Banal found himself entangled with Kong in midcourt. With the barker implying that it was a non-shooting foul, the referee handing the ball signaled three fingers, which led to some confusion after Banal made two.
Gameplay continued as Perpetual felt manpower loss with Manuel being the third player to be disqualified, 4:06 in OT. The last time they had the lead was from an Ynion putback, 72-71, 3:33.
