We've had fun bashing each other, which I also quite enjoyed, but I think it's time to act like real men and women. Let's have enough of it. Tama na yung nakahirit ng apat o limang banat. Let us act like real men (women) for others and Christian achievers for God and Country. It's about time, don't you people think so?

The ranking thing per se is not bad, it's the attitude of some towards the ranking result that is quite disgusting. :D

@TS
I seriously want to believe you're not trying to attract more flak by six particular words in your post above.

Everybody enjoys a "Wala kayo sa lolo ko.." contest every now and then. Except replace lolo with "school".

Bashing is like sex. You enjoy it now and then. Pero kung 3 times a day ka mag-sex, mahirap din yun. Hindi maganda ang epekto.

It all started with the "it turns out Ateneo is the better school" topic created by atenean kungpow. Well, what can we expect from them? :) Joke

All along school rankings and bashing is what the academe is for. In fact, there are more rankings and look-how-good-my-school-is threads than those for projects, assignments and academic stuffs.

Where are the Moderators?

My post is in defense of my school which was unfairly subjected to ridicule during a previous THES thread here in the academe forum.

As I said, I normally don't engage in school bashing. While you may not know what to expect from us Ateneans, I do know that you are insecure enough to bash other schools.

If you read my post carefully, did I bash other schools? Obviously, your mind is the equivalent of an infant's.

With regards to the projects, assignments etc., those few threads existing were created by students who are too lazy to even search at google let alone think for themselves.

Yes, you did "bash" other schools, in fact the very title of your thread was an implicit school bash.

And it is NOT necessarily infantile to disagree with yourself, and various other Ateneans (not all, thankfully), about the relative merits of the Ateneo and other unis.

Thankfully, personal e-mail correspondence has shown me that there are some Ateneans who are fully mature Christian gentlemen, as the school claims to produce)

Rankings per se isnt bad after all. It is a reflection or rather a wake up call for schools involved to strive harder and think of ways to improve their status. For the others, a motivational inspiration to be included in the list. However students, and more specifically alumni of the schools involved are quite "over-reacting" on how their school fared, initiated by some people whose business is to piss someone else's *ss. Sino ba naman ang gustong i-bash ang skwelahan nila?

Like some of you guys, I am a basher in my own way. Be it here at PEx or in the real world. Remember, no one is perfectly human. It's not about the school where you had your diploma, it's about what you become with it as a concrete testimony.

If one needs to compare schools based on plans to enroll or want to look at quality of education, then forget international rankings. Instead, consider the following:

1. faculty pay and workload, and average rank

2. annual funding for research (per capita)

3. class size (for lecture and language classes)

4. number and quality of volumes in libraries (and compared to student population)

5. graduates' average grades (not how many did well) in international and local licensure examinations

6. applicants' average grades in standardized entry-level exams (like the SAT, not particular local exams offered by each university)

etc.

If one is looking at the best Philippine schools, then compare them to Asian counterparts based on the points given above.

Finally, note the differences in requirements for other countries. For example, in Australia, a university degree is not required for work: one needs only around twelve years of pre-university education and technical and further education (TAFE). That plus other training is credited when one decides to attend uni. In Singapore, the general education curriculum is taught in an additional year of junior college right after secondary school, and not in uni. And while successful application is based on one long entrance exam in RP, in other parts of the world the person has to take different exams with different levels of difficulty, depending on what he wants to take. In some cases, recommendations will not come from school officials but from employers.

If we only know more about these things, then we will realize how illogical it is to compare rankings for schools that are part of an educational system that contains many problems.

I hope you had the proper education to understand that.

I hope you had the proper education to understand that.

Not necessarily. "Implying" is often a more subtle and dishonest form of "bashing". So instead of saying outright that Schools X, Y, and Z are worse than School W, an implied "bash" disguises it by saying something like "turns out School W is the best".

[As for my education, B.Sc. (Biological Sciences), B.A. (Ancient History and Archaeology), both University of Birmingham (UK), M.Sc. (Biological Sciences) University of Liverpool, Dip.Theol. (Theology) University of Oxford. I am at present University Chaplain and an honorary lecturer in Biology at London South Bank University. There is more to add - but that's enough for now.
Of course, I have never attended the Ateneo de Manila, so my education is inevitably deficient. For that I apologise]

THES.

Pero bago magbigay ng kuro kuro. Magbasa muna tayo.

School bashing IMO is a stupid exercise in futility. In the end, there is no point to all the wasted energy spent. People who engages in such a futile activity I believe lacks the confidence about their own schools that they have to put others down to raise their own schools.

People/Students who really thinks their school are the best, don't brag. They just have this quiet confidence about them..

I suppose no one has gotten a the highest grade the minute one walks in class on the first day? I suppose not. Heck, I even haven't seen a single centavo from my freshman year 'til I graduated... ...so why bother?

Should UP participate in these rankings? It can. But if it does decide to, it should paint the real picture of what the University of the Philippines is. NEVER should the UP be dependent on these external rankings in defining what it stands for.

Bashing is just doing something like, you want to be on the top, that you are more superior than anyone here, that your school have the guts, credibility etc...What is more important, your parents sent you to school to learn, to acquire, and to be responsible, not to bash.

Education is the best gift that your parents can ever give you^
