There's this great CD I'm recommending: Angels of Venice... Galing! :)

You'll find lots of those types in the lower section of Tower Records.

Anyway, who else is a fan of Medieval / Renaissance / Celtic Folk music?

Please post and indicate your specific preferences...

I'm more into the mainstream type, Orion D., so I can't bluff you on the medieval-type sound.

So along those lines, I've got most of the Enya albums, and a couple by Loreena McKennitt. That's pretty much about it. I do love "The Mask and the Mirror," though; it's a staple in my Dad's car whenever I take it out!

That's OK...

I've got those New-Age Medieval types too.

Yeah, I love Loreena McKennitt's "The Highwayman..." Haunting!!!

It's only the "Book of Secrets" that I have among her Albums. Where'd you find them? Does Tower have them, or did you get them abroad? (I got the "Book of Secrets" in the US)

My rare collection:

"Lo Gai Saber: Troubadours and Minstrels" - Azalais de Porcairages, the woman troubadour from Montpellier.

Herrad of Landsberg's "Garden of Delights" on the CD Hortus Deliciarum.

I highly recommend the Cornish music of Anao Atao especially the Poll Lyfans and the Esoteric Stones CD.

The Gaelic Storm - this one's that band seen on that Titanic movie. Try getting hold of their self-titled Gaelic Storm CD and their new CD called Herding Cats.

If you love those uillean pipes stuff, I'll surely recommend Linda Barnes & Harrison Hampton's Ireland, The Spiral Castle, The Dark Isle and their recent Wassail CD.

Although not really a hardcore medieval genre, get that "In Search of Angels" CD, the soundtrack to the PBS special of the same name. If you are into pastoral, choral, classical, contemporary and spiritual music combined, try owning this one.

I am so happy not so many people appreciate this kind of music.

And hey, I'm tired of Enya and Loreena McKennitt.

Well, sinned, I don't blame you, what with that collection you've managed to amass. It's just that the Philippine music set-up isn't as culturally diverse as to allow a massive proliferation of Celtic music. Enya and McKennitt have "crossed over" thanks to MTV and other mainstream sources; other commercial New Age/Medieval crossover artists whose albums I have include John Tesh and Yanni, but I didn't include them in my original post. It is for that reason that Enya and McKennitt are the artists I cited; I don't blame you for being "tired" with them - they're overplayed, as far as Celtic music is concerned.

As an example of the kind of lack of awareness for this type of music, the recent St. Patrick's Day sale at Tower Records didn't even have Loreena McKennitt in that collection.

It's a good thing you're sharing some of your titles with us, so we'll know what to get if ever we feel the need to stack up on some good Cornish/pastoral/medieval sound.

Ok pala yang collection mo, §inned™...

In any case, I was able to find the self-titled Gaelic Storm album in the States.

As for Celtic-medieval music, don't forget to take a look at the Spanish-Celtic genre from Galicia and Asturias (from northern Spain.) The band Milladoiro (from Galicia) has great albums with a slightly modernized touch. Same with the Spanish bagpiper HEVIA who actually patented an electronic-MIDI "gaita" or bagpipe for his album.

Once I saw a collection of CD's at Ali Mall at the department store area, and these were from the group SEQUENTIA. That was circa 1996, and during that time, I didn't have much cash with me. So I didn't get to buy it. Two or three weeks later, I went back and they rearranged the whole CD section, and no one knew where those CD's were. Shucks! Magaling pa naman ang SEQUENTIA.

There's a CD called "On the Road to Bethlehem" which features Middle-Eastern and Medieval music which would have most probably been heard by European pilgrims who trekked all the way to Palestine... In that album, the Ensemble Unicorn and Ensemble Oni Wytars played. The last piece there, if I recall correctly, I think it's called "Mevlana" and is a Sufi (Islamic) song, is the basis of one of Loreena McKennitt's songs which is of Mid-East flavor.

If you listen to the Loreena McKennitt version, it sounds so similar to the soundtrack of the Mummy. :)

Mister Dean, I believe it's not about the Philippine music set-up, it's more about Filipinos not being so learned, well-rounded or being too "masa" to appreciate Celtic, Medieval, Classical, those Broadway musicals or even Kitaro. And I don't think it's all about exposure either. I remember reacting to Dr. Isagani Cruz's nincompoopery during one of his dim-witted classical music fora at PCIBank way back in the mid-90s about Filipinos not "that" exposed to classical music hence the absence of their knowledge about Pachelbel or the Faure Requiem. I told him I didn't grow up with violins or bagpipes around me or my dad playing the pan flute, or the radio stations proliferating the operas by Puccini or those duets by Rossini but, still, I was able to learn, understand and appreciate the ineffability of toccatas and Massenet's Meditation from Thaïs myself.

Boadicea (featured at the last part of Sleepwalkers where the cats were running around) came from the "Celts" album. It was also used as the bass part in the rap-song "Ready or Not..."

Majority of the Filipinos are clueless about this genre. That's bliss to me.

Yup, ~pAngGa~, the title is Boadicea.

It's great to find people who like classical and ancient music. Myself, I listen to a lot of English and Italian madrigals, and lots of period music played on authentic instruments. Personal favorites: "Trionfi! A Florentine Festival," "Music of the Gothic Era," and anything by the Quink Vocal Ensemble and the King's Singers.

Does anyone listen to 98.7 dzFE? I'm acquainted with a DJ there who's also very much into ancient classics.

There was this Medieval Music CD I saw at Tower Records which I can't find after they rearranged the area. It features Medieval Christian and Sephardic-Jewish music from Spain.

Anyone know the title of this?

I like the traditional stuff like Beethoven...Mozart...those kindda music...but the classical piece i like the most is "Canon in D" by J. Pachabel...
Coolio used that in his single
"C U When U Get There"

Orion D.

Hi Dan,

Actually, strictly speaking, Beethoven would fall under borderline Classical and Romantic Period. (just like Schubert) While Mozart falls under the Classical period. Then J. Pachelbel falls under Baroque.

Medieval and Renaissance are older than all the styles you mentioned... :)

Just as a guide...

MEDIEVAL
RENAISSANCE
BAROQUE
CLASSICAL
ROMANTIC
MODERN

...those are roughly some of the genres in order.

However, somehow related to this thread on MEDIEVAL and RENAISSANCE music is Celtic/Irish music. The reason for that is Celtic/Irish music has very faithfully maintained the ancient melodic characteristics of medieval music.
