Hello fellow Benildeans!!! Post here any roster updates, recruits, and any other information that is relevant to the DLS-CSB sports program.

from what i know, the blazers line-up is still intact.. only trillo is leaving.. plus others who will vacate the position where jeff morial and harvey porras plays since they are coming back.

for me these are the players who will carry the blazers this season:

kris robles (his last year)
martin urra (also his last year)
william johnston
gerald layug
stan aldover (for me he was a disappointment last year.. i really thought he would have a great year last year)

i'm also pinning my hopes for the successful recovery of jeff morial. his first two seasons were a bit below par. i hope he gets his breakout season this year.

that's the problem with the blazers...Umaasa sila lagi sa mga transferees na nakakalaro lang for 2-3 years....The school should focus more in recruiting top caliber High School graduates who can give them 5 solid playing years*okay*

I think that will happen soon, may mga scouts naman ang CSB kaso nauunahan lang sila at siyempre, the offers that other schools have (established basketball programs) are more enticing compared to what CSB had before. But who knows, maybe Coach Caloy has something up his sleeves! ;)

i don't know bout orbeta.. i was even surprised he didn't play last year.. bakit nga ba? kahit sa PBL wala siya..

anyways regarding orbeta, i'm not sure if he is still eligible next year.. you can see my post (re micah evangelista of SBC) in the other thread (Can SBC win w/o Ekwe?)..

can somebody here post what Orbeta's ID number is.. 100 nga ba siya or 101? if i'm not mistaken, 2 years siyang nasa team B before he was able to play for CSB in 2002. then he played 4 years then wala last year.. if he'll play next season, it will be his eighth year.. tama nga ba ako?

Siguro may chance pa na makalaro si Orbeta next season, kasi nagppractice siya with the Blazers, or kung hindi siya makasali maybe sa age ruling na din siguro kung lagpas na siya. I'll try to ask Garri Sevilla if ever na makasalubong ko sa school :)

Mukhang matagal pa tayo makakarating ng Final Four, mas malalakas ang teams tulad ng Letran, San Beda, JRU, at Mapua. Dumami pa mga malalaki sa UPHDS at Baste lalakas pa. Umaasa na lang ako na maging cohesive ang Blazers this season and try to get a better ranking this year. :D

IMO, Layug should avoid the useless fouls, kasi sa mga napanood kong games last season ng Blazers, ok sana laro niya, but hindi siya makalaro ng maayos kasi foul trouble so instead of playing, nasa bench na lang siya, so pag balik niya sa crucial minutes either malaki na ang lamang ng kalaban or malamig na siya.

Well he's more of a slasher rather than a go-to-guy. We can't always rely on him to score. Nananalo tayo pag nakaka-score sila as a team. Si Sevilla mag-improve sana by next season at mag-ingat sana si Layug sa fouls niya. Ang isa pang pag-asa natin eh si William Johnston na unti-unting lumalakas ang kumpiyansa inside and outside the shaded area and beyond the arc.

Here's what I know, from last year's roster (Stan Aldover, Cadiz, Archie David, Jingle Devarras, Ili Johnston, G Layug, Jeff Libunao, Melo Manding, Jacob Manlapaz, Kris Robles, Garri Sevilla, Trillo, Aaron Umlas, Nico Urra, David Urra):
- Si Trillo wala ng playing years.
- Si Jingle di na babalik kasi focused on studies para makatapos na.
- Christian Cabatu and Paolo Orbeta are competing for slots.
- Jeff Morial is mga 85% to 90% healed na. More on getting his rhythm na lang.
- Sama mo pa si Jello Montecastro (from Zobel). He was supposed to play for the Blazers last NCAA season pero he tried out for UP initially, only to find out na hindi sya masasama sa opening day roster. It was a good thing na he wasn't enrolled, kung hindi, kelangan nya pa mag-residency.

IMHO, baka hindi ma line-up si Cadiz and Manding. That would leave 4 open slots - for Christian, Paolo, Jeff, and Jello.

That's a pretty strong team. Strong and tough enough to be in the final four.

Well, last time I checked, our schools (including UP) are lagging and outranked by other schools in the Asian regions, what more if we compare that to the other universities in the States? ;)

Well I can agree with you on one thing, and that is we can send quality workers abroad and we are competitive, but we also have to qualify for standards mandated on other countries so its useless bringing back someone here just to play ball. Unless we prioritize sports over academics. Take for example Japeth of ADMU, he's doing fine abroad. ;)

A source told me that when a few of his player friends were academically deficient, he chose to sit out last season. ;)

Orbeta, Urra, and Johnston were selected to play for Sista because of a couple of things:
- All 3 need more 'runs' to gain confidence and to be in tip-top shape come the NCAA season. Orbeta hasn't played in a competitive league for a while (most competitve he played would be on the Rain or Shine team after the 81st NCAA season). (Nico) Urra needs to gain his confidence back. After a successful NCAA run, he got sick before the start of the previous PBL conference. Johnston, on the other hand, will gain more experience in his first PBL stint.

You might ask, where's (Stan) Aldover, (Kris) Robles, and Layug? They're in pretty good shape, holding their own against several UAAP-experienced players who transferred from FEU, who I might add, will be eligible to play next year.

I think 2 players from past seasons encountered this issue already. This is not good for Benilde Basketball.

On the lighter side, it only shows that the CSB team is firm with their grade requirement imposed on the players. Education is their prority, which is a great thing to know. :D

Posible yun kung magaling ang coach tulad ng 2000 dahil madami siya nahatak mula team B ng UST tulad nila Magpayo, at nakakuha siya ng magaling na player mula sa ibang colleges sa south tulad ni Sunday. Tanggapin mo na lang ang reality na hindi pa ganun kadali mag-improve ang Blazers pero siyempre, huwag muna umasa ng malaki pero todo suporta pa rin! ;)

Coach Caloy also added that this year’s Blazers are more balanced and has a little bit of a perimeter game and can create opportunities inside.

Last year, they were almost crowded with a rookie cast. Now that the players – both rookies and veterans had luxury of time to play together, the Blazers are experienced enough to pull a lot of surprises.

That could be the case bigbadpaker, but I'm not exactly downplaying their chances in their tune-up game against UST either. Their win was a morale booster in going to the NCAA wars and I just hope that they can polish their skills when they meet MIT on wednesday. I'm still hoping that they can make it to the final four. ;)

Not really, I still think that UST played like a champion sa first half right until the second half, breaks of the game lang yan for the Blazers dahil pumutok ang players namin and of course, homecourt advantage. :D

actually, i think the last time CSB with Orbeta played against MIT, natalo benilde courtesy of the assist of kelvin to neil pascual. panalao na CSB, natalo pa. in that game, especially in the 4th quarter, it was practically Orbeta vs MIT. kada shoot ng three points ni orbeta, may sagot sina veranga, gonzales, etc.. for me that was orbeta's best offensive game. bumawi lang kahapon si orbeta and it was kinda sweet revenge..

College of St. Benilde drew inspiration from the return of four of its former top players as it subdued Mapua, 74-68, yesterday in the second playdate of the 83rd NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

After opting to sit it out last season, the prolific Paolo Orbeta fired a game-high 25 points in his return to college ball, including four of his team’s season-high 10 triples as the Blazers led from start to finish to beat the Cardinals.

“He (Orbeta) stepped up big for us,” said St. Benilde coach Caloy Garcia. “But the name of the game is consistency. Can he sustain it the whole season?”

Orbeta is actually one of the four players who didn’t see action for the team last season due to various reasons, including Harvey Porras and Christian Cabatu and Jeff Morial (ACL injury).

Porras, Cabatu and Morial combined for 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Blazers held off the Cardinals, tipped as one of the title contenders in the pre-season but have so far failed to live up to the hype by dropping their first two games.

“We’re definitely a better team than last year because of the return of these four players,” said Garcia.

After a sluggish start, the Blazers put their act together and posted their biggest lead at 41-25 lead with over three minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The Cardinals, however, regrouped in the third quarter as Jerby del Rosario keyed the team’s fightback to within, 50-51, only to reel back as the Blazers finished the period with a 8-1 run to keep a 60-51 lead into the fourth.

Christian Cabatu, Harvey Porras and Jeffrey Morial also made their presence felt after absences last season. The 6-foot-5 Cabatu, son of ex-PBA player Sonny, contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, while Porras, another 6-foot-5 frontliner, added eight points and five rebounds.

Morial was sidelined by an ACL injury last year. Cabatu and Porras had problems with their grades last season.

In never before seen spirit, College of Saint Benilde ticks its first win of the NCAA seniors’ basketball season, 74-68, over Mapua Institute of Technology on June 27 at The Arena.

The Blazers initiated a 9-0 run to finish the third quarter to break the game open, 60-50. They cruised to a high of 14 points in the middle of the fourth with a picturesque passing play that ended up as a Harvey Porras field goal, 67-53.

“We shot the ball well,” said CSB head coach Caloy Garcia.

Returnee Paolo Orbeta topscored with 25 points on 10/18 shooting, while also hauling seven rebounds. Garri Sevilla and Christian Cabatu both chipped ten markers.

“They wanted to play with a veteran team,” Garcia mentioned regarding his comebacking cagers, Orbeta, Cabatu, Porras, and Jeffrey Morial. Orbeta sat out last year to save his final playing eligibility, while Porras and Cabatu sat out due to academic reasons, and Morial recovered from his ACL injury.

Neil Pascual headed MIT with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Kelvin dela Peña and Sean Co teamed up for 21 markers, 11 caroms, and five feeds.

Orbeta swished for 16 points in the first half and Garri Sevilla notched all of his ten points in the second quarter to set the tone of the match, leading in double digits before the Cardinals managed to trim it, 36-43, at the half.

Morial sank a three-pointer, 48-38, at the 8:45 mark of the third in favor of Benilde. The Intramuros-based squad, however was pesky and was able to go near by a whisker when Co made an undergoal stab from a backdoor play, 50-51.

It was all Saint Benilde from then Cabatu and Illie Johnston sparked the run at the end of the period.

“Luckily, napagod sila noong fourth [quarter],” Garcia cited as the reason why the Cardinals was not able to come back.

The Blazers would only have a day’s rest then would see action against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on June 29.

“Letran is a dark horse team,” cautioned Garcia.

Mapua would face off against San Beda College on July 4.

COLLEGE OF St. Benilde got a big lift from comebacking Paolo Orbeta to beat Mapua, 74-68, and gain an early share of the lead in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Orbeta, proving he deserved a place in the team, fired 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Blazers’ mighty assault.

So hot were the Blazers they unloaded 10 triples, seven in the first half, to end a two-year losing run to the Cardinals.

It was the second straight loss for the Cardinals in as many outings. They also suffered an 80-84 defeat from Letran in the opener last Saturday.

The cat-quick Orbeta got ample support from sophomore Garri Sevilla, who chipped in 10 points.

"We’re glad to start with this kind of a win. We wanted to use this win to see how far we can get in the coming games," said St. Benilde coach Caloy Garcia. "This is a matter of consistency. The boys played well, but I know they can still play a lot better next time."

St. Benilde raced to a 36-21 lead after dropping a telling 12-0 run through the efforts of Sevilla, Orbeta and Christian Cabatu.

The Cardinals, however, leaned on the gutsy plays of veterans Jerby Del Rosario, Niel Pascual and Kelvin Dela Pena to close in at 46-48, 5:38 left in the third period.

But that proved to be Mapua’s last hurrah as Orbeta came through with another big play that stopped Mapua’s fightback.

Cabatu, who also failed to see action last season due to academic deficiency, also stepped up for St. Benilde with 10 points and seven rebounds.

I can't barely watch them as they fumbled in the last quarter. What made it more unbearable was the numerous times the referees blew fouls on both sides to stop the momentum, didn't blew obvious fouls on crucial moments of the game, and give technical fouls and a warning on a flopping player like Montecastro. Letran won it in the 4th quarter but the referees dictated this game from the 1st to the 3rd quarter. :shakehead:

Nevertheless, lesson learned, hats off to the Knights and let's move on to our next opponent, UPHDS. I hope they win the next game! *okay*

Ok, here's what I think about our team this year. This is a strong team. Our bench is actually deeper than what I expected. Judging from the first two games, I think this is going to be a better season than last year. We still have the tendency to relax after piling up 10+ pt. leads but I'm sure our players will learn from it soon. The previous comment na kinakabahan pa yung ibang maga players is very evident kanina. Coach Caloy is still trying to figure out his rotation. Mabuti na ngayon magkamali mali yung mga inexperienced players, huhusay din yan.

This team sort of reminds of the 2000 champion team. The 2000 Blazers lost their first 3 games. Most of their rookies that time were kabado. I remember Al Magpayo missing aleast 8 jumpers in the first game against UPHR. He turned out to be a really good jump shooter and may 3 point shooting pa yan. My point here is, ang laki ng improvement and there's more to see from this team. Buti na lang at may panalo na tayo. Atleast the confidence can be easily recovered.

^^I actually agree with you on several points.

Though it was a close fought game for the first 3 quarters, the Blazers lost steam on the last quarter. After breaking down the press/trap of Letran, they'd rely on one-on-one plays instead of setting up the offense. They actually played to their weakness.

Caloy's rotation (even with Rain or Shine/Welcoat) is really like that. He doesn't have a set 10 man rotation, but rather works on matchups against the opponent.

I haven't seen Stan (Aldover) play, yet. I think he can make a difference on both the offensive and defensive end.

Kasama pala si Aldover sa lineup and I agree that he can contribute. Injured, perhaps?

I'm particularly impressed with David after the Letran game. He can also shoot from the outside.

Cabatu has been playing really well and has been our most impressive big man. I think there's more to come from this team. Loaded talaga with talents although still lacks the maturity. The team must remember that there are only 7 teams this year. A few wins here and there may be enough for the Final Four. I hope they peak at the right time ala UST 2006 or CSB 2000.

just got back from the arena... we played our guts out today.. san beda is just too strong with ekwe. but without ekwe i think the blazers can actually beat them.. remember guys theres only 7teams this yr with the suspension of pcu... lets say san beda and letran are the sure top2, the 3rd and 4th spot is a close contest among all the teams jru,ssc,mit,uphds and csb. i honestly believe that csb is better than ssc and uphds. maybe same level as mit and jru, so i really think if we want to get back to the final 4 this is the best year we can do it... goodluck blazers.. animo benilde!

I can't seem to imagine what would have happened to Barangay Ginebra/Anejo Rum/Gordon's Gin, during their losing years, kung yung supporters nila katulad mo. Wag na tayo sa Ginebra, sa San Miguel na lang tayo, tutal ke Cojuangco din naman yun.

Disappointing performance.
At least last year good fight for three quarters in all games.
Ngayon 2 quarters na lang yata.

After focusing on denying Ekwe, they seemed unprepared to defend against BOTH Menor and Aljamal at the same time.
Orbeta was probably surprised he got Lanete and Tecson instead of Hermida.

Layug should infect his team with his fighting attitude. I say Orbeta-Urra-Layug can still lead the Blazers to the final four.

True fans do not jump ship in times of hardship and trouble. We believe this team can do it. We know they can. We have faith. I can't say the same thing for you though.

You may say what you want about coaching, scouting, recruiting, etc. What I've mentioned are the facts as I've seen and know it. We've let go of numerous players because we can't give them what we want in terms of financial assistance and educational exemption. If we played to their heart's content, sobrang dali mag champion. But then again, that is not how this basketball team is run. Do I think that we will succeed by following the book? Yes. I believe in the system. I believe we can win without fielding overage players players who didn't make the required grade average, or even players who didn't pass the NSAT.

It's a common misconception and false perception na lenient ang academe sa athletes. In fact, merong isang player who was in the roster last year pero he failed to make the team now because he wasn't able to meet the required grade.

Kaibigan ko yung buong team. Part din ako ng team dati. I chose to give back by supporting the team now. Tawag sa amin booster. O ayan ha. And yes, sa gwapo kong 'to pwede akong pagkamalan na pinsan ni Coach Caloy.

After focusing on denying Ekwe, they seemed unprepared to defend against BOTH Menor and Aljamal at the same time.
Orbeta was probably surprised he got Lanete and Tecson instead of Hermida.

Layug should infect his team with his fighting attitude. I say Orbeta-Urra-Layug can still lead the Blazers to the final four.

jhigz & bigbadwolf - refrain from flaming each other and using foul language. May netiquette tayo na sinusunod dito. At kung ayaw niyo magpa-pigil eh magkita na lang kayo at mag-away sa personal. Ako pa referee kung gusto niyo.

Huwag niyo sirain ang CSB Thread dahil nag-paligsahan kayo ng basketball IQ. Tandaan ninyo, may moderator dito na nagbabasa ng lahat ng mga posts ninyo. Learn to agree that you guys disagree in a civilized manner. Public forum po ito at maraming nakakabasa ng away niyo especially pexers from other NCAA schools.

I know we are all disappointed with their performance as a team this season but it's not as if it never happened before but maybe we can salvage enough wins to make it to the next level so let's not give up first and jump ship to the Archers' fold. Both of you have valid points and let's not get personal with each other just because we have different opinions about the team. May mga common misconceptions tayo about the sports program but let's not give up and lose hope. Hindi tayo pumasok sa liga na ito para magpa-bugbog lang parati, babawi din tayo.

DLSU may have a better basketball program because of their alumni boosters but CSB will get there, dadami din alumni boosters ng Benilde dahil nagpapayaman pa ang iba satin and like rome, it can't be built in a day. :glee:

Learn to count your blessings and be proud of them win or lose. And I'm sure the school is doing a major facelift in it's sports program every year for student-athletes kaya nanalo tayo dati ng overall seniors crown. Hindi lang kasi basketball ang priority ng administration. ;)

Now, can we all get along and move on to better discussions about the team? :devious:

Ang maganda lang sa game nila eh hindi na sila nagkakanya-kanya. Kahit na-miss pa ni Robles ang possible three na makakapagbigay sana satin ng lead sa last quarter eh okay lang. Breaks of the game. ;)

They have to start from scratch again, they are playing as a team again. At si Urra eh nag-improve nanaman and bumabalik ang pagiging role-player niya. Sana galingan nila sa last assignment nila sa 1st round, maka-tsamba man lang sila sa JRU. :D
