She's pretty, isn't she? From what I observed last game, I can fairly say she's a real diamond in the rough.

These are her strengths at the moment:


Her ability to block
Her leaping ability
Her quickness inside the court
Her potential to be strong physically which now makes her able to toss the ball from one side of the court to the other.
Her service is quite hard already.


Her weaknesses at the moment:


She's still adjusting to the pace of the game -- sometimes, she still doesn't know where to go and what to do in case of emergencies so to speak.

Her legs seem wobbly. To be able to last the whole 5 sets would entail her being strong physically.

Floor defense is still not solid; she's not yet able to anticipate where the ball will land after being hit or dinked.

She's not yet that intelligent to be seeing what to do when play is developing in both sides of the court. For now, she just tosses the ball without seeing how the defense on the other side of the court is developing.


Some suggestions:


She needs to lose those baby fats soon. She needs to put some muscle via strength training.

The legs must be developed.

She needs to capitalize on her height.

She should work on her confidence to be able to lead the team in terms of offense.

She should be enjoying the game more. People just gravitate toward her, don't they? Being pretty and tall has its advantages. And she should put all these to use by just having fun inside the court. (She should take a cue from her team mate Tabaquero who flashes her big smile even after having committed an error.)


I'm not yet a fan. But I'm becoming one pretty fast. Denise, along with the likes of Tabaquero, Mabbayad, Daquis, Taganas, Castaneda and Soriano, holds the future of UAAP Women's Volleyball Championships. And I think Coach August knows this very well.

And probably the Philippine women's national team, too.

Two or three years from now, when she matures into a thinking and physically strong athlete, the Philippine team will be fortunate to have her in its core line-up. :)

haseq, i agree with you that Denise is still adjusting. to note, she didn't start as a setter. she was a spiker before. and perhaps that's the cause of her errors.

Sana hindi ma-pressure si Denise sa mga expectations natin. I think she's now in a phase of her life that's both exciting and scary.

For a while, we don't have someone to really look forward to watching in a game, right? At least, that's how I felt before I saw her on TV last Sunday and before actually seeing her play live against a badly mangled NU squad last Wednesday. I'd watched the games of UST vs. La Salle during the V-League tournament held at the Rizal Coliseum. But I could honestly say, not one single player piqued my interest until now. (At least not until the days when Mila Ranada was still playing for the team en route to winning that championships in the '90s for UST.) I'm a Thomasian through and through and I've always cheered for the team -- although majority of the Lady Archers had been under me one time or another when I was still working in La Salle. But this is the first time after what -- two years? -- that I'm looking forward again to watching the games -- live. It's primarily because of Denise, and some of her team mates, notably, Tabaquero and Mabbayad. (I'm in my early 40s and I'm excited again.)

It should be exciting for Denise because she's slowly beginning to be a "crush ng bayan." And she won't be able to help it. Filipinos always admire the tall, the beautiful and the intelligent. And in a way that's good because people will be expecting only good things from her -- that she'll mature into becoming one of the finest volleyball players of her generation in the country -- and even Southeast Asia -- who knows? That she'll help restore the interest of the public in women's volleyball after a while, especially after the poor showing of our women's national team at SEA Games.

But then, it's also scary because she might have doubts in herself -- that she might not deliver the goods, so to speak, given that she's young and inexperienced; and that she plays the team's main setter, which obliges her to lead the team every step of the way.

I hope she takes everything in stride -- that she should work really hard to learn the rudiments of competitive volleyball, but at the same time keep her feet on the ground that her soon-to-be legion of fans would be able to admire her grace and humility in the face of adversity (and even defeat).

It's rare that a player of her quality grace the UAAP to renew public interest in women's volleyball. And I hope she doesn't complain if people will start talking about her. Or will be asking her autograph in the near future, say this Sunday's game. Just kidding. (If Denise happens to chance upon this thread constituted just for her, she should read the postings with a grain of salt. There's nothing to it, really.) And in case her team loses the game this Sunday, it's enough for the fans, including me, that she would just give her all for the glory of that old university along Espana where I came from.

Kung may bf na si Denise -- at least sa ngayon yan ha? -- medyo maghihintay ang mga tagahanga niya sa mga susunod na pangyayari. As in, sana, sana, sana, mag-break sila... Joke!

Pero seriously, ha? Mukhang mula Katipunan, hanggang Espana, Morayta at Taft, marami na ang humahanga sa kanya. Kasi nga, rare find siya e. 5' 9" pero "tosser" lang? Unusual talaga yan at dahil bata pa siya, marami talaga ang mag-aabang kung hanggang saan siya aabot.

I mean, it's okay for her to have a boyfriend and all, but I'm really curious how very good she can become two or three years from now. We're seeing the future of Philippine women's volleyball in her. And Ging and Venus (hopefully) and Aiza (who knows?). I just hope that she doesn't take this "love" thing too seriously. She and Rachel Anne, and of course, another idol in the making -- Angeli Tabaquero -- are pulling the crowds back to the venue so they can watch them live.

Maybe, it's wishful thinking. But I hope volleyball grows on her such that she, together with the national team "hopefuls", can salvage this once prominent sport in the country. We need them to breathe life to this now seemingly moribund sport. Will Denise (and the rest) be up to the task? I'll be watching.

I agree that it's rare to find a tall tosser. Denise can be the next Cristina Salak (RP team's former tosser, who hailed from FEU in the 90s) who's also tall (6 footer yata siya, if im not mistaken).

But unlike Denise, Tina is already 29-30 years old. For a young 5'9" girl, she might grow two inches or more. =)

It's not about the setting.

We know she can set. And if it's on, it's wonderful to look at.

Denise's problem has something to do with maintaining her composure -- yes, that's the word.

Keeping her composure during critical moments of the game, especially when her legs are starting to cramp due to fatigue, is her greatest weakness to date.

Over time, when she becomes physically stronger, she should be able to overcome this weakness. When her body is able to withstand the rigors of the game, mental toughness shouldn't be that difficult to follow.

But for now, she needs to keep on working on the mental aspect of her game.

After all, volleyball is not just a game of power. It's also a game of wits and psychology.

She looked sick yesterday. I read in the other thread (na sabi ni haseq), nung UST-FEU playoffs may lagnat si Denise. Haseq even said that Denise' mom told him that she would send Denise to the doctor for check-up.

Naku, eh baka hindi pa siya gumaling kahapon? Honestly, though I know that Denise is not a perfect setter, but some of her errors yesterday seemed uncharacteristic.

So I think there might be a reason behind her errors. Maybe she wasn't feeling well.

Anyway, ke totoong may sakit pa rin siya o hindi, ang mahalaga ay sa Wednesday maayos siya at yung buong team. =)

I just hope she doesn't bow to pressure or something.

She will be the key to UST's game tomorrow, whether we like it or not. If this sophomore delivers, UST will win. If not, good luck next season.

If Rhea Dimaculangan joins the UST womens team next year, UST will have a better shot at the championship. Rhea is the ace setter of UST high school, actually she's now the eye-candy of many college team coaches for a setter.

I still do hope that she joins UST, perfect sets sobra...kaso what will coach do with Denise? Especially na mukhang may fans club na ata sya...Oh no...

Super Segue about USTHS:

I had the pleasure of watching their game 1 championship against UE last Saturday sa UE Gym, as expected they were beaten in 3 sets by the much experienced and older UE team. Coach Vicente's attackers are first year high schools who have yet to experience more games- Barticula, Valdez, and the one they call Kim, slots that were left by now UAAP's #1 blocker Carmela Lopez of UP, now UST's Kim Lazaro, UP's reserve Lucindo, the one they call Vivien and ace Libero now being trained as 3rd setter michelle Del Rosario of UST.

I can sense that the game was so emotion-filled since it's one of the last games of Rhea in the High School team. I can see the frustrations in her face whenever her spikers failed to deliver points from her perfectly executed sets.

The other tower-F. Dimaculangan was not fielded that time to give way for a senior player (I forgot her last name, she used to be the 2nd libero after Del Rosario) to play her last games with the high school.

Both F. Dimaculangan and Pantagnon (if I got it right) both standing around 5'8" to 5'10 although improved, has yet to learn to utilize their towering heights, strengten their attacks and toughen their blocks.

Hindi ko alam kung nakabawi sila nung Game 2 to push a game 3 due to my jampacked Sunday activities, pero I'm so proud that I had the pleasure of watching the last games of Rhea wearing a UST jersey...

I really hope she joins UST...but I heard though that La Salle, UP, and Ateneo is scouting her....

I hope and pray that Denise Tan provides the much needed leadership to power her team to the championship. I don't know if she'll have the will power to maintain her composure tomorrow. Bute na lang hindi pikon si Denise at yung iba pang UST players. Nakita din namin yung thrashtalks ng FEU. Kung yung mga taong nanonood naasar sa pinag-gagawa ng FEU, paano pa kaya yung UST players na nasa court.

Great job for UST, they only did what was ought to do. No extra movements which could have triggered something negative to the eyes of people. V-league days pang ganyan ang UST team. I wonder who's their adviser. And I salute their trainers for teaching them the right manner in court. =)

Did the lady tamaraws did those things? Controlled ng UST ang buong game. Ang nakikita ko lang na medyo maangas na ginagawa ng player ng FEU ay yung kay Daquis na kapag nakaka score ay idinidisplay ang jersey number niya. Trash talk? May nakita ako ng konting ganun, yung naka score si Mabbayad then may sinabi siya sa mga players ng FEU, sa FEU ang nakita ko lang yung stare down ni Cafrance kay Mabbayad ng maka score siya against her. Although nakaupo ako sa UP side sa other end of the court kung nasaan nakaupo ang FEU side, hindi ko na witness yung sinasabi niyo na yung mga FEU supporters ay naiinis sa inaasta ng FEU players, parang 180 degrees naman yun sa totoong nangayari. Dahil after the game nag applaud ang mga FEU supporters sa players ng FEU dahil for being sport, pati na rin sa mga UST players dahil sa magandang pinakita nila. And when nag meet ang mga players sa gitna ng court after the game all smile ang FEU players while nag cocrongratulate sa mga players ng UST. Maybe cover up lang ito para sa naging attitude ng mga UST supporters sa game kahapon, kung nanood kayo ng live sa BEG kahapon, you know what I'm talking about.

UST is not a team that does trash-talking and other stuff that would incite the opponent to kill them, so to speak. If at all, they just play and fight. If they win a point, they smile and do high-fives. If they lose a point, they prod the erring team member to do better the next time. If they lose a game entirely, they shake the hands of the opponents.

FEU plays more "personal". I don't want to badmouth them or anything. But if what some PExers say about FEU's trash-talking is true, they don't deserve to win the championships. (I'm wearing glasses, that is why it's hard for me to see everything people in this thread refer to.) Of course, I can always say that it has something to do with breeding and educational training. But I don't buy this crap. It's either you have manners or not. Again, if what some people here are saying is true, FEU can be the best players in this year's UAAP, but that doesn't buy them dignity or class.

Assuming Morada really told Tan "maganda ka lang," Tan could have retorted "I'm sorry, I can't help it; it's in the genes." But she didn't, she just raised her hands, and went back to business. That's class for you.

FEU should start playing volleyball the UAAP way. Their plays should do the talking, not their mouths. Otherwise, they're better left playing in an inter-barangay or in an obscure inter-color tournament in some far-flung barangay in Bulacan or Pampanga or wherever. There, they can win all the championships they want.

This is off-topic but UST will see action in this year's NESTEA Beach Volley 11. Representing UST are Mary Jean Balse and Cherry Ann Balse. Unfortunately, wala tayong rep sa men's division.

Included ang FEU sa both divisions. Wendy Ann Semana and Lorelin Astorga will represent FEU in the women's division while Joshua Alcarde and Jeremy Floyd Pedregosa represent FEU in the men's division.

The University of the Philippines will also see action in the men's division, represented by Bon Andrew Perez and Mark Anthony Corpuz.

Elimination dates for the Luzon teams is on March 21-23 in La Salle Greenhills. Top teams advance to Boracay, where champion teams get P150,000 in cash.

So let's support the Balses and UST come March! :)

Audiences yesterday (hindi lang UST supporters, take note) won't 'boo' FEU players kung hindi obvious ang pang-ttrashtalk ng FEU players lalo na si Daquis (to note, she used to be a crowd favorite dahil maganda at magaling siya), Manalo, Astorga at Morada. Bulag at bingi lang ang magsasabing hindi nila nakita at narinig yun. I'm sorry but that's the truth talaga. We can't cover the truth. May katabi at ka-row kaming supporters ng UP, AdU at Ateneo, sila mismo nagsabi ding nakita nila ang pang-ttrashtalk at extra movements ng FEU. Konting kontrol lang sana sa FEU. Di nila kailangan gawin yun. =) Sports lang...

Baka hindi na naman kayo maniwala sa akin haha, nandun po ako nang live. Courtside, [b]first seat[b]. My two eyes are still working and my ears as well. I was with other friends, and they also heard and saw the same thing.

I saw all UST-FEU matches, at kahapon lang talaga nangyaring nasobrahan ang FEU sa thrashtalk. Yes in a way, these acts are inevitable but come on, it's not the right manner.

Some things are better left unsaid especially if it's a part of the past. Good or bad, we should judge people based on the present time that we know them. All of us have dark sides, if it is this kind that you'd like to share about Denise. But like any other people, most especially like you, you would like to escape from it.

I salute to the women's team for the very reserved and graceful acts...

I used to watch the game live nung 1st round but now I like watching in TV so I could hear some facts, comments, and watch replays. And from my observation, no other team trash-talks like the FEU team. I never heard of a trash talk from the teams like UP, Ateneo, UST, UE, AdU, and NU.

I raised this matter to my bff who's studying in FEU, he told me that it is in a way understandable- it is for raising the intensity of the game.

But if all the rest can raise the level of intensity without those disgusting gestures why can't FEU?

I'm updating my analysis of her perceived strengths and weaknesses. (You might want to check my analysis on page 1.)

The thread was started by one guy who just saw Denise on TV and wondered who she was. That was January 22. So far, we have less than 250 comments and less than 7,000 views. Not bad for someone who was a relative unknown at the start of the 2nd round of the women's volleyball competitions of the UAAP.

What does this mean?

First things first. She's now famous. Thanks to the help of the TV coverage, she's becoming a household name, not unlike among the ranks of Ging Balse and Venus Bernal. There's also Angeli who now has her own following, literally. (I just hope this following doesn't translate to stalking. Just kidding.)

Number 14 of the UST WVT so far has had her ups and downs during the elimination and semi-final rounds. Luckily, she's made a 360 degree turnaround and her team is reaping the benefits of this turnaround.

So far, reviewing her weaknesses (as of eliminations and semis):


Her tendency to commit errors during the most crucial moments of the game. This had been evident during their skirmish with FEU and Adamson. She had too many errors, making her look amateurish.

Her relative inability to read the play of the opponent, which was really focusing on her own team's next play. This had left her vulnerable in the past because the opponent could read where she would set the next ball, and ergo, how UST's offense would be carried out.

Her relative weakness on the net, when the ball was just dinked, and passed thru her block.

Her seeming inability to maintain her physical fitness throughout the game.

Her inability to adjust to the pace of the game -- setting focused on Bernal and Tabaquero -- and her weakness in getting the favorite set of Balse.
There were factors that brought these about:


The poor service reception of UST had forced her to track wayward balls, in the process, making it difficult for her to set the play effectively. Bernal would almost always get the toss.

She almost got no support from her teammates when she got the first ball, after defending against opponent's offense.

The team itself had a problem with communication --there was no evident moral support for members who were committing errors, and the like.

Okay. Fast forward to playoffs and semis.

Two things were significant in effecting UST's major turnaround:


Two successive defeats in the hands of FEU, the last one during the playoffs. (This must be really demoralizing to the team.)

That straight set defeat in the hands of Adamson. (I had analyzed this game in full.)


Positive reviews

During that 2nd game against Adamson, UST was devastating in form. Negative feedback from the previous game was immediately replaced with heaps of praises, and exaltation, and adulation, focusing on how she "rotated" the ball, paving the way for UST's fast and furious offensive attacks, which were mainly done in combination.

That game against Adamson showed a new facet of her game, which I think is peaking at the right moment. This has something to do with her focus and mental reading of the game. Oh, this was also evident during last Sunday's game, except for their poor showing -- a mental lull, if you may call it -- during the 3rd set.

She's not just the setter of the team: she is now the undisputed leader of the squad. Notice how she approached the guys, after their spikes did not go over or were blocked by the opponent. I liked that she would touch Balse or Bernal or Tabaquero, after having been "disgraced" by FEU's block.

Setter Supreme Miss Denise Patricia Tan does not seem lost at all. In fact, she's now able to manage to keep her wits and composure intact. This is the all important difference in Denise Tan today. She's now thinking. I saw her did it the first time last Sunday -- she was eyeing FEU's defensive formation before she served her mean floaters. See? She was serving to Semana most of the time. I could only suspect that she wanted Semana to get the first ball so Astorga or Abanto would have difficulty setting up the play because either was at the front at the time. I was secretly marveling and saying to myself, "Wow! This is a major improvement on her part."

Still some more weaknesses

Denise still commits a few errors here and there. But what's positive about this happening is that she's quick to let it pass, and move on. Remember how she dealt with Morada's intimidation? The few times I saw her get rattled, she screamed (against Adamson). Now, she just smiles. (Thanks to Angeli for pasting that smile on the team's faces.)

She still had difficulty with her backrow defense. But she's getting more help now from her teammates. So this is not as heavy as it used to be.

Come Wednesday

She's not turning back.

She'll take up the cudgels for her team and for the fans because she's starting to figure out who she is, on and off the court. That she's now somebody famous when just less than a month ago she was a virtual nobody. That she now has her hordes of fans -- from UST and everywhere -- who will be pinning their hopes on her that she won't disappoint them.

This, I'm sure of: she won't disappoint them or me. If only for this, I'm pretty content. :)

Come on guys, the crowd are yelling, ang ingay ingay sa venue, how can someone who is sitted even at the court side could hear a thing like that? What would be the reason para sabihin ni Morada yun? Why make such stories para lang baligtarin ang totoong nangyari nung linggo. Daquis talking trash? As sa nakita ko, pag nakaka score siya humaharap siya sa FEU crowd while doing the Enrico Villanueva gestures. And I'm wondering why UST supporters are very offended by that eh hindi naman sa harapan nila ginagawa ni Daquis yun. And why naman nabubulag kayo sa mga ginagawa ni Mabbayad and Maizo na kapag nakaka block ay nag popoint ng finger sa na block nila and nag whiwhisper ng words na I don't hear then mag ggrin. Don't say na UST players are not capable of taunting or talking trash, that would be a big hypocrisy.

Yung chismis na sinabihan ni Morada si Denise ng "maganda ka lang" is very untrue. Come on guys, the crowd are yelling, ang ingay ingay sa venue, how can someone who is sitted even at the court side could hear a thing like that? What would be the reason para sabihin ni Morada yun? Why make such stories para lang baligtarin ang totoong nangyari nung linggo. Daquis talking trash? As sa nakita ko, pag nakaka score siya humaharap siya sa FEU crowd while doing the Enrico Villanueva gestures. And I'm wondering why UST supporters are very offended by that eh hindi naman sa harapan nila ginagawa ni Daquis yun. And why naman nabubulag kayo sa mga ginagawa ni Mabbayad and Maizo na kapag nakaka block ay nag popoint ng finger sa na block nila and nag whiwhisper ng words na I don't hear then mag ggrin. Don't say na UST players are not capable of taunting or talking trash, that would be a big hypocrisy.

Everyone is capable. But not everyone is starting it. Don't drag issues of hypocrisy when the first person guilty of such is you. What if info with regard to the Morada-Tan incident came from DEnise herself? DID YOU REALLY WATCH THE GAME? Or just focused on UST's reaction to the unsportsmanlike jeering by your favorite team. Seems like you've been demarcated by bigotry and batshit insane fanaticism as manifested by your losing grip to senses. Even Anne Remulla noticed FEU's thrash talking which started even during the Game 1 of the Men's finals.

Anyway,

Great game by UST last Sunday although I rarely saw execution of combination plays. I'm now starting to sense confidence in Denise which will definitely bring the team to a higher notch.
