View Full Version : FAMOUS ONE-HIT WONDERS
AirHare
Sep 23, 1999, 12:48 AM
Artists have been remembered by their songs they composed or performed. Although some were known by just one hit, only to be forgotten in their next releases or they simply disappeared from the world of music.
A perfect example is "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Don't Disturb This groove" by The System, "Shake you Down" by Gregory Abott or Right Said Fred's "I'm too sexy."
Can you name any famous one-hit wonders from the 70's to the 90's?

Well, there are a lot. Some artists are only as good as their last hit song.
An example of a one-hit wonder is Macarena by Los del Rio (??). It was a huge hit though both here and abroad.

Hi AirHare! I think Right Said Fred should not be included here because thay had another hit in "Don't Talk Just Kiss". Anyway, I'll try to help with you some:
Carl Douglas - "Kung Fu Fighting"
Gary Glitter - "Rock And Roll Part1"
Jan Hammer - "Miami Vice Theme"
Patrick Swayze - "She's Like The Wind"
Jack Wagner - "All I Need"(don't count his hits here).

Joe Schmoe? The RT DJ? Cool! I listen to you everyday.
I didn't know "Don't Talk Just Kiss" made it in the Top 40.
Does Paul Hardcastle's "Nineteen" fall in the list of one hit wonders?
Here's another one: "Supersonic" by JJ Fad.
Suddenly -- Soraya
Steep -- Lauren Christy
Upside Down -- Two Minds Crack
More Than Words -- Extreme
Can't Cry Hard Enough -- Williams Brothers

I'd hate to be the party pooper, but just to point out some artists who don't deserve to be called one-hit wonders because they've had more than one hit.
Deniece Williams had two number one songs: "Let's Hear It For the Boy" and a duet with Johnny Mathis, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late."
Tara Kemp also hit top 40 with "Piece of My Heart."
Extreme went to No. 4 also with "Hole-Hearted."
Shanice almost went to No. 1 with "Saving Forever For You" from the Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack.
Boy Krazy went to No. 1 in the UK with another hit, the title of which escapes me. I'll edit this post when I find it.
Some other one-hit wonders that might bring back memories for some of you include Natural Selection with "Do Anything," Nicki French witb"Total Eclipse of the Heart" and, surprisingly enough, to date, would you believe that rapper Timbaland has only had one Top 40 hit?
Wow! Joe Schmoe, is that really you?

The Rock says that maybe you can include a band like Jo Boxer's with "Just Got Lucky", Industry with "State of the Nation", Gazebo's "I Like Chopin", Al Corley's "Square Rooms", "Burning Flame" by Vitamin Z, "Heaven (Must Be There)" by The Eurogliders, and "New Age Girl" by Deadeye **** among one-hit wonders.

i was just wondering how 'creep' by radiohead become a one-hit wonder? they have a lot of good hit songs already. in fact, their latest album 'paranoid android' is still making waves until now.
and 'i remember you' by skid row? there were a couple of songs from that album that became hits, such as 'monkey business' and 'wasted time'. they even released an album about 2 yrs ago, just to prove that they're still in the rock scene...

Yes. I'm the guy you hear on RT every morning. i decided to write since Jude Turcuato of Silverstar asked me to(hey Jude! this site rules!!!!!!!!!!). Btw, I think Natural Selection had another hit in "Hearts Don't Think They Feel". I'll try to get a copy of one-hit wonders at the station. See you guys!
Joe Schmoe
Oct 8, 1999, 01:45 PM
Lisa Keith(sad to say) is not a one hit wonder. Her first hit was with Herb Alpert called "Making Love In the Rain". After "Better Than You", she had another hit in "I'm In Love". Take it easy everyone.
The Rock
Oct 9, 1999, 01:23 AM
Wow, an actual RT DJ! The Rock forgot to include Jane Child for "Don't Wanna Fall In Love", Voyage with "Souvenirs", Cameo with "Word Up", Taco with "Puttin' On the Ritz", Ohio Players with "Love Rollercoaster", "Rock the Boat" by Hues Corporation, "Turn the Beat Around" by Vicki Sue Robinson, "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by Dead or Alive, "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo and "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth.
So Joe Schmoe, was The Rock right in his assessment? By the way if you or any one on this forum is interested, there's a VH1 album entitled "One-Hit Wonders" (not sure if it's only 80's one-hit wonders) that's avialable in CD Warehouse.
Joe Schmoe
Oct 11, 1999, 07:25 PM
Hi Rock! I'm afraid some are not. The Ohio Players had lots of hits in the 70's aside from "Love Rollercoaster" which was remade by the chilli peppers. They also sang "Fire". Dead or alive had another aside from "you spin me 'round" in "Brand New Lover"

Cameo had another hit with "Candy"
Before "Two Princes" became a hit, the Spin Doctors had "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong."
A-Ha also had a hit in "The Sun Doesn't Shine on TV"
Aside from "Informer", Snow had a follow up hit called "Girl I've Been Hurt."

Yoshi: I think you're referring to "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles, who have several hit songs (like "Manic Monday"). As far as A-Ha, AirHare is right. But aside from "Take on Me" and "The Sun Always Shines on TV", I think "Train of Thought" and "Hunting HIgh and Low" coming from the same album were also hits.
My contribution to this list is Seona Dancing's "More to Lose". Is this right, Joe Schmoe?
From Talk Talk, I only know "It's My Life" that became a hit. They're a good band, though.
From White China, there's "Smiles and Jokes".
Yep, these are all New Wave songs. :)

Thanks anfernee for giving the correct title of A-Ha's song.

Yoshi,
I checked out the site you mentioned. Very comprehensive. Although some songs are indeed disputable.
Why was Swing Out Sister included in the list of one-hit wonders when they hit the top 40 with "Twilight World" and "Am I the Same Girl?" And I think "Waiting Game" also made it in the Top 40.
Marky Mark (Walberg) & the Funky Bunch came out with "The Wild Side" after "Good Vibrations"

JUNXB102: Didn't Industry's song, "In the Still of the Night" reach the Top 40? I can distinctly remember this song, although it was nothing compared to "State of the Nation."
broom: "Tom's Diner" is a song by Suzanne Vega, the same artist behind "Luka", "Left of Center" and a new song released just last year that climbed the charts. Ain't no one-hit wonder.
How about the German group, Nena? I think only "99 Red Balloons" became a hit, although I'm not too sure.
And then I think The Primitives'only hit song is "Crash".
Can anyone verify? :)
The Rock

Airhare: Chuck Mangione's "Feel so Good" may be his only "pop" hit. He's a legend in jazz especially with that great trumpet of his.
Yoshi: Toni Basil also had a hit with "Street Beat".
Joe Schmoe: Sorry dude, I forgot about that other Dead or Alive song. Wasn't their lead singer a close friend of Boy George? I think they were very tight because they were acknolwedged gays in the conservative 80s. Since I was born in 1975, and not a pro DJ, I'm pretty ignorant about the Ohio Players' other hits. Thanks for the info! Hey, Maria Vidal's "Body Rock" should be included here too. Along with Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine", Soft Cell with "Tainted Love", Gerardo with "Rico Suave", Biz Markie's "Just a Friend" and this Latino rapper's song "Mentirosa".

Mister Dean: I'm flabbergasted that someone actually remembers "Do Anything" by Natural Selection! I used to be so obsessed with it some 8 years ago, and I'm hard-pressed to find a copy of it anywhere now. *sigh*
bayaw: Radiohead is alive and thriving, and "Creep" certainly wasn't their only hit :)
Some other one-hit wonders, I believe, are:
"Sukiyaki" by 4PM
"Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba
"Mmm mmm mmm mmm" by Crash Test Dummies
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something
"My Sharona" by the Knack
"*****" by Meredith Brooks
"All For You" by Sister Hazel
"Cantaloop" by Us3
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

Lush, I have a copy of their album! ;)
Chumbawumba - Chumbawamba (Do you suffer from long term memory loss? I don't remember...)
Crash Test Dummies - Afternoons And Coffeespoons, Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead (remake), Keep A Lid On Things (latest)
Meredith Brooks - I Need (same album as *****), Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) with Queen Latifah (latest)
All of these songs even have their own music videos that I've seen. ;)

Mister Dean
Apr 6, 2000, 11:05 AM
One local group that was a one-hit wonder, if my memory serves me correctly, was Tunay Na Amo. They has this one hit called "Running Away," a smash in 1990.
Zen, that "do you suffer from long-term memory loss" track is called "Amnesia." I've got a single if anyone would care to borrow (I subjected Mikoid to it, and based on his reaction, I know why the song wasn't a hit!).
Just recently, I think I can safely include Mandy Moore in my list, as "Walk Me Home," her latest single, seems to be heading nowhere. But then again, I've been proven wrong so many times in the past!
That Boy Crazy track that I was thinking about earlier is "Good Times With Bad Boys."
You can also add French kid singer Jordy to that list. "D'ur Dur E'tre Bebe," that song where a baby sounds like "o yeah yeah yeah yeah, bebe, feels good, oh yeah, yeah..."!
Nyaks! Mister Dean, thanks for pointing that one out.. ngayon ko lang napansin na mali ang na-post ko.. after 5 months pa! LOL oo nga Amnesia yung title ng song :)
I don't think the New Radicals can be considered a one-hit-wonder precisely because they had two hits, You Get What You Give and Someday We'll Know :) I think they released some other songs, pero mukhang di sumikat. Plus, sad to say, they have disbanded. :(

How about "Nevermind" by Colours? I don't know if it went up the charts, but it was overplayed circa '86.
Ada: Lauren Christy also released "Color of (the) Night", a theme from the movie of the same title. I don't think it was a hit though.

Radiohead is alive and kicking. They've been busy producing quality music since the creep era. They will be releasing their yet untitled new album this year. I know because they're my favorite (next to Verve) and I've got all their albums plus some singles. Every album they release is better than the previous one. Any paranoid android here?
Tom's Diner is not a one-hit-wonder. Its written by Suzanne Vega. Remember "Luka", "Left of Center", "Book of Dreams", etc. One of her finest albums is Solitude Standing.
Pseudo Echo (There's a beat for you, la la), hhhm, I think they've got 2 hits from the same album. The same with Two Minds Crack, aside from 'Upside Down', the other hit 'find the key', from the same album also.
Swingout Sisters definitely not a one-hit-wonder, they're popular! Arggh!
I'll just list down here the Artists what you thought were one-hit-wonders, where in fact, were NOT:
1) Radiohead (Creep) - other hits: high and dry, karma police, plastic trees, etc
2) Suzanne Vega (Tom's Diner) - other hits: left of center, luka, book of dreams, etc
3) Pseudo Echo (A Beat For You) - other hits: cant remember but there really is
4) EMF (Unbelievable) - other hit: right here right now
5) Skid Row (I Remember You) - other hits: wasted time, etc
6) A-Ha (Take On Me) - other hits: cry wolf, living daylights, etc
7) Swingout Sisters - hits: breakout, am i the same girl, twilight world, etc
Thats all i can remember.
Time to contribute, here's my take.
1) state of art by friends again
2) total recall - the sound
3) she's so young - pursuit of happiness
4) animal magic - ???
5) a girl in trouble - romeo void
6) duel - propaganda
7) china -redrockers
8) major tom - peter scheiling
9) happy birthday - altered images
10) love plus one - haircut 100
11) i met her in paris - jimmy jimmy
yes, bands during the new wave era. (please correct me if im wrong).

Moroder was a gay icon who connected with several hits as producer for some of the 80s more durable dance acts, including Donna Summer and Chic. On the other hand, Philip Oakey was very popular as one-third of Human League, who had two number one hits.
Shaggy had a near-top 40 hit before "Boombastic" with "Oh Carolina."
Thus far, we have yet to see another Hot 100 hit from Corina ("Temptation") and Ini Kamoze ("Here Comes The Hotstepper").

Crash Test Dummies? They're not one-hit-wonder... They have Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, Afternoons and CofeeSpoons, Atsaka yung How does a duck know - All of them naririnig ko pa rin sa radio until now.
One Hit Wonder na alam ko:
1. Shawn Colvins
2. HANSON!!!!
3. Train
Mister Dean
Apr 18, 2000, 08:23 AM
On the contrary, :Þ, Hanson is not a one-hit wonder. They've had another top 10 hit in the Carole Bayer-Sager-penned "I Will Come To You."
Neither is Shawn Colvin, whose "Sunny Came Home" was preceded by a Top 40 smash, her remake of the Police's "Every Little Thing (S)He Does Is Magic."
Mykeskye
Apr 19, 2000, 06:22 PM
EMF is neither a one-hit wonder. a few months after hitting #1 with "Unbelievable", they reached Top 20 with "Lies".
"Tom's Diner" is not solely credited to Suzanne Vega although she actually wrote and recorded it, but English mixers DNA were partly 'blameful' of the hit. as documented by Billboard it is credited to DNA featuring Suzanne Vega. the single reached Top 5 in December 90 but no follow-up was released -- that means, DNA is the one to be considered a one-hit wonder.
other corrections i have to make after i do important errands.
Mister Dean.. HANSON?? Got another hit?
You gotta be kidding!!!! After their song "MmmBOP", I never heard anything from them again eversince. Who knows? Probably they changed thier genre.. mweheheheh

Southern Sons had another Top 40 hit, "Wildest Love" in 1993.
"Bawal Na Gamot" was the only hit, apparently, of Willy Garte.
D'Sound had another song which was played on LA 105.9. I don't remember it, though, and I doubt it became that popular anyway, so I'm with you on that. They are big in Europe, though.
Nexxus had another hit, I believe, in "Keep On Saying."

I agree with you that there have been artists with one album to make the Billboard 200 charts and never make it again (including Stacy Earl, Propaganda and Lonnie Gordon), but the artists you've mentioned have all hit the Billboard 200's Top 10 Albums chart. Alanis' sophomore album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," and Hootie and the Blowfish's "Fairweather Johnson," both debuted at No. 1. Third Eye Blind's "Blue," made the Top 20 of that chart also and sold 500,000 copies.

baby3na: As far as I can recall, Tiffany had other hit songs, such as All This Time, Can't You See, and some others. Magkapanahon sila ni Debbie Gibson and their brand of music was a real hit then. Naglie-low na nga lang si Tiffany after she got married to her hairdresser and got pregnant...
Also, I believe Cathy Dennis had another hit song (I remember hearing it on Rick Dees Top 40), Irresistible. And didn't Harem Scarem have another singable hit other than Something To Say? The song escapes me now, but I remember singing two Harem Scarem songs in high school... About Martika, I know she released another song, circa 1992, Martika's Kitchen, but I'm not sure if it was a hit. Guess not.
Soleil: Talaga? Soul Asylum didn't have any follow-up hits after Runaway Train? Because I'm trying to think of another song by them, and I can't think of any right now. But I always thought they remained popular even after Runaway Train... (na-gf pa nga ni Dave Pirner si Winona Ryder, e!)

Bega's "Tricky Tricky" went to No. 75. That disqualifies him as a one-hit wonder.
Ringo Starr has had four Top 40 hits after the Beatles.
Shame by Evelyn "Champagne" King
"I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany may have been her only US No. 1 hit, but she also visited the Top 10 with "Could've Been" and "All This Time."
Cathy Dennis' "Too Many Walls" wasn't even her biggest hit. "Touch Me (All Night Long)" peaked at No. 2, while "Just Another Dream" tipped the scales at No. 10.
Martika's "Love...Thy Will Be Done" hit Top 10 all right, but it's a far cry from her Top 5 smash, "Toy Soldiers."
Vanilla Ice's "Cool As Ice" made the Top 40, but his only two Top 10 hits were "Ice Ice Baby," the first single by a Caucasian rapper to top the US charts, and "Play That Funky Music," which peaked at No. 4.
As for Soul Asylum, "Misery" made the Top 10 of the US Modern Rock Tracks airplay chart, but wasn't released as a commercial single, therefore disqualifying it from the Billboard Hot 100.

Edwin McCain had another hit, "I Could Not Ask For More," from the OST of "Message In A Bottle," which hit the Top 40 last year.
Eric Benet has had several hits, including "Georgy Porgy," a duet with Faith Evans.
Faith Hill had an even bigger hit than "This Kiss." "Breathe" almost hit the No. 1 position on the Hot 100 earlier this year.
Nu Flava's "Sprung" made the Hot 100, and Our Lady Peace's two albums hit the higher 40s of the Billboard 200.
Passage's "Something In Between" is currently receiving heavy rotation on the Hive 100.3 and 89.1 DMZ.
Shai's No. 1 hit, "If I Ever Fall In Love," was followed up at No. 10 by "Baby I'm Yours," which, by the way, is my favorite song of all time.
Zhane's "Hey DJ" was their biggest hit, but not their only one. "Saturday Night" topped the dance charts. "Call Me" also made the Top 40.

Thanks for pointing that out, jukebox. I was wracking my brain thinking of that song. It was their second release, though, after "Hey Mr. DJ." I also correct myself on the title. It is "Hey Mr. DJ," but I wasn't so sure, given Madonna's "Music," which is blotting out all the songs I know with "DJ" in the title.

You're welcome, hobbes20 (nice nick, by the way!). My source is the Billboard group of print and web publications, because it's the most respected music group in the world.
It just so happens that I remember these things. It's really part of my nature to recall the mainstream charts, lalo na kapag nag-Top 10 yung song.
Sometimes, my predictions don't work: I predicted Mandy Moore would be a big one-hit wonder, but Sony flexed its muscle and sent "I Wanna Be With You" rocketing into the US Top 40.
More one-hit wonders in the US:
House of Pain Jump Around. Their second single stalled at the higher 100s.
Martha Wash Give It To You. Despite topping the charts as the hidden vocalist of Black Box and C&C Music Factory, dance music's reigning diva has yet to enter the Hot 100 a second time. "Give It To You" reached No. 86.
RuPaul Supermodel. A technicality brought his duet with Elton John, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" to No. 96, but on his own, he's only charted with "Supermodel (You'd Better Work."
Danii Minogue This Is It. Kylie's younger sister hasn't tasted Top 40 at all.
2 Unlimited Twilight Zone. Sure, they're big in Europe. They're nowhere in the US.
Vengaboys The Vengabus Is Coming. What a strange song. After entering the charts and almost hitting Top 20, they've disappeared from the US without a trace.
Charles and Eddie Would I Lie To You. "NYC" was a poor second single to even begin with.
Voices That Care Voices That Care. I'm cheating. They were around for only one song.
Other artists who've only entered the US charts once: Five When The Lights Go Out, Boyzone No Matter What, and Propaganda Heaven Give Me Words.

Good Bye, Its time for me to go.
I'll call you in the morning so I can let you know.

Someday if we try there will be no goodbyes, and we will live happily.

Definitely one of my favourites. May iba pa ba silang hit?

Very true! I base my assumptions on the US charts, though. So, while Vengaboys has done quite well on the European and Asian charts (a rather interesting footnote on the kind of music we like, :p), they've never had another US Hot 100 hit.

Better Than Ezra had a lot more hits after Good, believe me. Friction, Baby may prove that with "King of New Orleans."
Fuel is definitely not a one-hit wonder, though they did break into the scene with one hit, "Shimmer."
Our Lady Peace is also questionable. "Superman's Dead" is proof of that.
Not sure about Passage as well.

I think it's safe enough to say that Skee-Lo is a one-hit wonder. :)
I disagree with Shawn Mullins. He followed "Lullaby" up with "Shine," and that track also hit top 40. His latest single, "Everywhere I Go," dented the Hot 100, and was a minor hit too.

"Rump Shaker" was sung by Wreckx N' Effect. You're right. They're a one-hit wonder.
Patty Smyth wasn't a one-hit wonder. After "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," she had another Top 20 hit with "No Mistakes." She was also the lead singer of the Warriors, I believe, and had a slew of Top 40 hits before going solo.
Snow had a No.1 hit in "Informer" and a modest Hot 100 hit with "Girl I've Been Hurt."
