Kaya Dapat lang nating Kilalanin ang mga Tao sa Likod ng mga Boses ng mga Anime Para na rin sa mga Anime Lovers [Aba,magiging Star sila rito:lol:

My fave anime Dubbers:

1.Maverick Dacanay - Kasi siya yung nag dub sa Pinakamamahal kong anime Dubber [Sakura] :lol:

2.Fourth lee Brilliantes - Ilan na rin ang Nabosesan niyang anime Character,Pero unique ang boses Niya eh,Pag siya ang nag dub,Malalaman mo agad kahit Magboses Bata pa siya....:lol:

3.Jefferson Utanes - Ang galing niyang Magboses Bata...Lalo na yung binosesan niya si Syaoran.

5. glenda resurrection(tama ba spelling?) - si jang geum, kasama ko din sa betty la fea, bait na tao po nito.

hi there guys, im also a big fan of the dubbers. My favorites are: Bon Reyes (kaede rukawa), fourth lee, richie padilla, vincent gutierrez (mitsui), francis ibañez (hizuka), monty repuyan... hay ang dami! :-)

that's why i decided to choose dubbing as my subject for my major paper. im conducting a study about dubbing in the philippines. since, we are all fans of dubbers here, i wanted to know what you think of them and dubbing in the Philippines as well. hope you could share a little time for this short survery. i myself is a big fan of the dubbers and i would definitely want to meet them. that's why i chose this topic for my paper. hope you could give some insights about this. thanks.

1) how do you see the present situation of dubbing in the Philippines?
2) In what ways can you say has dubbing created impacts in the Philippine society (positive or negative) ?
3)Can you relate more to the Filipino dubbed series, now that they are in our language than when they are in japanese (or other foreign languages) or it doesn’t quite make a difference?
4) What do you prefer to watch, Filipino dubbed series (anime, series, movies, etc.) or subtitled? Why?
5) Are you a fan of dubbers? Why or why not?

You have to give credit where its due... Though I prefer subtitled I do get to watch local dubbed anime from time to time and not all the VA jobs are bad... I mean its not their fault if the writing is bad or if the network cuts scenes like crazy...

I've heard some great voice acting from Grace Coronel (In particular, her role as Yukino Miyazawa), Minna Bernales (She really gave Asuka Langley Soryu's tagalog voice attitude), Oh! and that guy who voiced Naruto (didn't catch his name)... I think he really got the character down...

I think that in general we have great dubbers in the local anime scene compared to most countries (Japan excluded of course...), Only a few Studios in the US really get things rght over there....

1) Kung may Alta Productions, ano yung "TSP" na nagdub sa Ghost Fighter at Slam Dunk?
2) Sino-sino ang nagdub sa Jungle Book, specially Akela (old wolf), Alexander (dead blue wolf), at kay Sura at Akru (magkapatid na wolf)? Yung kay Bagheera, alam ko kay Vegeta yun. Yung kay Sura kapareha nung nagdub sa bida sa Tactics. Marami sa mga nagdub sa Jungle Book naririnig ko sa mga imported telanovela ng QTV.


Gusto ko rin magdub talaga. Sobrang aliw ako, kaya ko magaya yung local at foreign dubs. Kaya ko rin sarili lang, parang nga gusto ko idub yung cutscenes ng Devil May Cry 3 by myself, hehe.

If you are a dubber your salary depends on the director. And you will be payed per-project or per episode basis. If you are just starting and still learning, You could be earning 300php per episode. imagine working from 12pm-2am.

To answer the question if you want to get into this industry, you need the right connections. And of course go to Abscbn and try to audition from there go around 12pm on wards (just say to the receptionist that you have an audition for dubbing)

Has anyone heard of Creative voices? They offer Basic Dubbing workshop (which im taking right now.)

The workshop is 8k in a span of 2 months. Super saya talaga. We got to go to abascbn and do some crowd dubbing which was really, really fun.

We also had a hand in The blackjack oav, Saiyuki ep 26, etc.

oh my bad...according to my resources Sir erwin jason mendoza is indeed the dubber of the father of shan chai.. BUT he filled the spot of sir pocholo Gonzales when he went to china at the time meteor garden was dubbing. :)

Personally I think our dubbers are great with what they do. The only problem is that the localization of most shows doesn't even follow up to the dubbing, which is too bad since most of the success of translation lies with the two (dubbing and localization) being executed well together.

YOU read again. :) Localization is the act of presenting a foreign show and infusing it with (in this case) our Filipino culture. Thats where writing. translation & syncing comes in.

you cannot just translate an episode of anime word-per-word. you have to use conversational tagalog and some slang terms to make it more modern... there are so many aspects of it you can only dream of. So thats why im asking you to try it out. get an episode of anime.. any anime. and translate it into tagalog. not direct translation but conversational tagalog. i challenge you to do it. Its better to experience than to teach. sabi nga nila..

The dubbers and the writers are a team. So you cannot praise the dubbers without praising the writers...kasi oo nga magaling boses nila, pero kung walang puso ang linya nila...you know what i mean.

oh and when you said "most" it means you generalized most anime shows in the industry...wanna look up the word? :)

Well if they're really put that way, my bad, though I do look at them separately. But then thanks for giving me the words I'm looking for, cultural infusion. ^_^

And about getting in the biz, I'm on it. I'm doing voice demos on one side, and trying to learn Jap anywhere I can on the other. And if I get that vacation in Japan I'll get some cultural exchange/education as a bonus. I prefer getting some pre-knowledge to go with that experience and get more knowledge afterwards.

BTW, you seem knowledgeable enough in the production, are you in the biz?

Yep, given his prior postings, Electronic Dead is definitely in the biz.

Translating and writing down the script (trying to make the balance between comprehension and being faithful to the original Japanese or Korean; better if the scriptwriter(s) is a fan him/herself), and then six hours or more of dubbing a 27-minute episode aren't jokes (that's from one dubber I know of). Then there's a backlog of work that has to be finished with; and even if they have the series done with, the dubbing studio suddenly gets another set of shows to take on.

As if that wasn't enough, they're all too conscious about the reactions of the fandom (yes, some of them lurk around on the forums of the TV networks to read comments and criticisms about the quality of their work); it's really painful when the network suddenly cancels a show they labored on for too long.

It costs the networks millions of pesos to acquire even a quarter-season (13 episodes) of anime, and with that much money riding on the acquisition along with the huge expectations of the fans, the dub studio will have to watch every word they make or the internet will heckle them mercilessly.

One thing I noticed about Filipino television network localization is that they do it poorly, if not at all. First of, their dubbings are translated directly, as word-per-word. There are times that this doesn't work well specially with foreign metaphors. "Like stealing candy from a baby" is an American simile, which when applied in Filipino culture doesn't really mean a thing. There are of course no footnotes in network-localized shows, which is why there are certain parts in the show where the geist is left out, specially those that involve humours on Japanese honorifics (-san, -chan, -kun) and their significance.

If you were around in 1999 and the local Tagalog versions of Evangelion or Ruruoni Kenshin were been around for you to see and hear, they might as well blown you away completely. Delivery, proper tone of voice and flow becomes necessary, along with the right voices and good scripting to knock the socks off the audience.

In cases of shows such as School Rumble (the Hero TV version), it becomes necessary to add some subtitles or footnotes to make the otherwise cryptic "moonrunes" (or floods of kanji) be known to the average viewer. And there are some who have decided to retain the Japanese honorifics alone to distinguish who's the elder or the younger.

If I wre to make a choice, would prefer seeing the works of fansubbers in my television. They do an outstanding job in translating animes and making things familiar to the viewers with tidbits of infromation about Japanese culture. Network localization teams can learn a thing or two from these guys, and hopefully they can improve the work they do.

There are some real anime fans and "Asianovela" afficionados who are now working as professional scriptwriters/translators (there's a writer who handled the first 40 Tagalized episodes of Naruto Shippuuden; sometimes she has to double as a dubber herself), so they understand what's handling the material is all about. And they do their homework like they read up the character profiles and the spoilers until 4 in the morning.

Before I go, all of what you've written down on the blog has "purist" tendency smelling all over, so you've got to see what the dubbers really do. Time to open your eyes.

I wasn't able to watch the dubbed version of Yakitate! Japan, and knowing that most of the gags there consists of wordplays (thanks to fansubs), how did the translation go on that one?

alam ko *** part na nag-"guest" si Detective Conan sa Tagalog-dubbed version, may binago sa sinabi ni Kyousuke kung kaya ang sinabi niya "Di ba taga-kabila ka?!" (or something like that) which is a reference to the network war of ABS and GMA.

Hmm, after re-watching that episode and checking on Wiki the details, it actually is a coincidental situation. See, Detective Conan was aired in Japan at Nippon while Yakitate!! Japan was aired in TV Tokyo. Kawachi did say that line (it was along, "If you're to make an appearance in a program from another broadcasting station, wouldn't it cause trouble?") So it's not really a reference to the two local networks ^_^

Bumping an old thread, mainly because I can't think of a good subforum to place this on when it doesn't really qualify Anime & Manga but is still about Filipino dubbing.

Anyone here who watches the Nick shows on TV5 lately? I was surprised to see Spongebob Squarepants and Jimmy Neutron tagalized. I must admit that their voice imitation is on the mark, specially that one JN Christmas episode where Jimmy's parents sang. If it weren't for the slightly imbalanced audio between the dubbing and the original music I would've thought they used the original singing track. They kept the catchphrases untranslated, which felt kind of awkward, but makes sense more than when translated.

On a side note: Why are the scripts still somewhat Filipino-poetic? The sentences are still long as such that when they dub it it's as if, as a teacher of mine once said, "being chased by some wilderbeast?" Couldn't they just shorten "ang iyong (noun)" into "ang (noun) mo?" It's syllabically concise, and is much more layman.

I think it's good that the tagalized Nick dubs are more "Filipino" than Taglish-like unlike recent dubbed shows (both anime and live action).

At least, kids who watch these shows would be exposed to the kind of Filipino (i'll use this term instead of tagalog) that many of the young generation nowadays deemed to be too "malalim" or "nosebleeding" which i think is very sad.

Although I must agree that the deeper they get, the more impractical/inconvenient they become when said. I don't know about the case of the old Filipino dubs from the 1990's but the case of code-switching or simply switching back-en-fourth between Filipino and English then were at its minimum unlike today. And their use of so-called"malalim" Filipino grammar suits the dubbed shows well as long as it was necessary. If they don't have a particualr word from English that have a Filipino/Spanish equivalent, then they'd have no choice but to retain the word as it is.

One up side i think is that some of the catchphrases that do get translated, they somehow made sense and at the very least gave justice to its original translation (downside, they get too long a sentence and when it is being said, the dubber would say it very fast in order to have it synched to his respective character's mouth movements).

True that. Deep-Filipino does have its appropos moments for certain situations, such as hanging a specific line for a dramatical build-up, or a monologue done in a glorified figure. But in this case I pointed it out because this morning I just watched the tagalized Spongebob at TV5 and it used the Deep-Filipino translation.

BTW who does the dubbing on TV5, their own in-house group?

They've been doing name changes since NA releases, which is actually better than retaining names when you want to localize a really marketable franchise.

Look at Pokemon, no one ever calls them Satoshi, Takeshi, or Hikari. Not only the characters, but the Pokemon names were given their English equivalents. Their themes are also NA original, giving it a much more western flavor. Now look what happened. Pokemon is now the most marketable franchise in the world, spreading over different English-speaking nations worldwide. Pokemon localization, also counting the game localization, is probably the most successful one that I've ever seen, though I still have reservations on some translations (onigiri is a sandwich?).

Our "golden age" of localization was around early 90s. Just skip out the part when they mixed Tagalog quips in the English dialogues of Dragonball. It was when we had Ghost Fighter, Sailormoon, and MKR. The best voice acting was Sailormoon's. You can actually characterize her with her voice, a whiny klutz of a heroine.

BTW what happened to Jeremiah's voice in Ghost Fighter? At first he was all granny and gruff. Later on his voice went mid-pitch.

True that. Deep-Filipino does have its appropos moments for certain situations, such as hanging a specific line for a dramatical build-up, or a monologue done in a glorified figure. But in this case I pointed it out because this morning I just watched the tagalized Spongebob at TV5 and it used the Deep-Filipino translation.

BTW who does the dubbing on TV5, their own in-house group?

Most of the dubbing of the foreign shows on TV5 is handled by members of Lapat-Tinig Dubbers' Association of the Philippines, Inc.

Wow! An almost complete set of the cast of dubbers. I really loved the voice of Eagle, Eric Resurreccion. It's cool, composed and intense all at the same time. The most memorable line of eagle for me is when he went out of his battleship with his mecha saying "FTO Go!". Very very cool!

I agree with you with great dubbing of Ghost Fighter, Sailormoon and MKR though I find the sound quality of Sailormoon rather poor in comparison with Ghost Fighter and MKR. I remember the sound had some echo or/and sounded like recorded from a container van. It just didn't sounded good, but yeah the voice acting was topnotch.

the redubbed seasons 1 and 2 of Digimon was really a turn off for me. Why do they have to retain "big brother" when takero can just say "Kuya Yamato". Worst is that, even if they were using the original Japanese version of the anime, the new dub made use of the Americanized names of several Digimons like Tailmon (as Gatomon).

One exception maybe would be Season 3 and 4 were the character's names that all appeared on the English dub of the anime (the dubs of 3 and 4 that aired on CN Phil were, according to a poster in Youtube were Filipino-produced) were retained but remained loyal to original dub.

sa case ng Season 5 (Savers/Data Squad), they used the Jetix version of the anime but generally the dub was more Japanese (eg Masaru and not Marcus, Toma and not Thomas).

I only found this out when I was searching for Maskman Filipino theme on Imeem.com and stumbled upon the song with the artist credited on it.

Nope, di ko narecord yung buong series since hindi ko naman pinanood religiously yung MKR. Nagustuhan ko lang kunin yung dubber credits for reference. Isa pa, narecord ko lang yung opening nung inulit ito ng ABS-CBN noong 1998.

Bioman was Philippine Anglicized (correct term instead of "English-ized") I think.

May guy sa youtube na nagpopost ng non-US English dubbed episodes ng Digimon Season 1-4, sabi niya sakin lahat ng seasons ay dinub ng mga Pinoy. What's really interesting is that I watche done of his uploaded episodes of Season 2 and they were the same ones aired on ABS. If you guys think that only half of Season 2 (Zero Two) was in English, you're mistaken. Turns out, the whole of season 2 was completely dubbed in the same English we heard from earlier episodes of the season including Season 1.

Season's 3 and 4 daw, he claimed were also dubbed by Pinoy dubbers (a complete contrast to what was written on the Wiki page saying it was dubbed by Singaporean dubbers)

Nagkakamali ka. Yung dub na ginagamit ng TV5 sa ipinapalabas nilang Fushigi Yuugi ay ang parehong dub na ginamit ng GMA nung ipinalabas nila ito noong 2000. Yung pangalan ni Yui dito ay Julie na ganun din sa ipinalabas ng GMA noon.

Malupit ang buhay ang tipikal na seiyuu at ng animator sa Japan. Kakarampot na kita, pero ang daming trabaho, ang haba pa ng oras sa trabaho. Minsan malaki ang porsyento ang napupunta sa boss nila. Sa kaso ng mga kanta, ang nagsusulat ng lyrics ang mas malaki ang kita kesa sa seiyuung kumakanta.

Sa kaso ni dafool (na nasa TAP noon), hindi malayo sa animator sa Japan ang kanyang problema: mahirap ang pagkain, kulang ang sweldo, madalas may layoff, daming kaltas sa kita.

Sa tingin ko parang mas maswerte yung mga dubber sa atin, kahit na katulad sa buhay ng mga seiyuu.

You'd expect that with an industry that reaches other countries that in the country where it all started from those who would be considered celebrities and artists they would be well-off or at least live an upper Class C life. But then again, their primary target market is considered as trash in their society.

But we know that at least the head honchos of Naruto and Bleach are considerably well-off than most of their colleagues, milkin' the money-machines of all its worth.

I’d say there’s two groups of seiyuu - one that treats it as ‘just a job’ and others (mostly the younger crowd who grew up watching anime) who are really passionate about it. But most of them are realistic about the seiyuu profession, and really - they don’t have good job prospects given that a lot go into voice training straight after graduating from high school; stop being a seiyuu = most likely to end up in a convenience store. Might as well stick to voice acting.
Obviously it seems that what motivates them to go on, despite the pain, the lowly income, and much sacrifice, is the art and the pride and joy of being part of a unique world. According to Gangu, an aspirant to the art of animation, replying at Riuva:

not many animators think about the salary but the PASSION.

Its NOT about money, its about DREAM. To create an epic anime or animation for people to watch and they will love it and will remember it as the best anime episodes!

A thought dawned upon me: whenever I watch dubbed anime on local TV, in any way the money paid by the TV station for the broadcasting rights (and the localized dubbing) funds the animation industry in Japan, and it also pays (perhaps in a small form of royalty) for the living expenses of the seiyuus and animators.

But despite of that, I want to be a voice actor/dubber because that's my DREAM. I know that I'll met criticism from most anime fans but I'll do my best of enjoying my job as a VA. Earning for a living is also important, but doing any kind of job w/o enjoying it is like.... lifeless.

The Best Tagalog Dubbed Anime:

1. Samurai X - lupet talaga nila magtalinghaga dito lalo na yung nagdub kay Hiko Seijuro ang master ni Kenshin.

2. Yakitate Japan - the best ang comedy lalo na pag kasama si Pierrot at Kyoske kakabagin ka talaga. ^_^

3. Eyeshield 21 - malupet na ang action pati ang katatawanan dahil kay Hiruma.

4. Full Metal Panic - Magaling ang nagdub kay Sosuke yun lang naman. ^^

btw, Hindi magtatagal ipapalabas din dito sa Pinas ang tagalog dubbed ng The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya at umaasa ako na sana maging matino ang pagkakadubbed dito. ^_^

It depends on what type of "raw" licensed media the broadcaster had acquired from the distributor/studio; as Julius had described correctly, there's some that has the background music and foley (SFX) track pre-separated from the voice track for broadcasting (and ADR -- additional dub recording) purposes, but some others don't (there's one case in which although a station secured the broadcasting rights, they got not a broadcast-grade raw Betacam tape or DVD from the distributor, but a home DVD of the acquired show).

Mistakes happen sometimes, especially when the audio engineer gets the mixing wrong, in an attempt to "overpower" the original voice track with the new dubbed track (no wonder the voices are louder than the foley/BGM track); or that the master volume is lower than normal; or that the voices suddenly go out of sync with the scene.

When we still have BS1-2 and NHK on cable, I was able to watch 2 Japanese-dubbed versions of Beautiful Days and Jewel in the Palace.

I guess that also goes the same for the video component of the media. There is one episode of Pokemon where they had to accompany the dialogues with subtitles. If memory serves, when I saw the English version of that episode the subs were non-closed/non-bordered. when GMA aired their localized version of Pokemon, they had to put it in a blue closed caption. The mixed quality didn't turned out well though. It was a bit like a built-in caption feature on a TV, only a bit wavy and stiff.

I used to do some 'test dubs' nun pinalabas ang Gundam Seed Destiny date sa cartoon network and even Area 88 sa animax...meaning, I try to translate it on the spot and deliver the same lines with the same emotions.

I just remembered a case of cr@ppy dub jobs: Zipang nung pinalabas siya sa Q. Since alternate history, I'd bet nobody in his right mind would try doing "Konpeki no Kantai."

Pero wala pa rin tatalo dito sa kakornihan at katatawan.

1. I think we're gonna use Sony Sound Forge. Lecture pa lang kami about the basics pero in the coming weeks we're gonna write our own scripts for our own radio commercials.


2. Yes, it's in Benilde. it's part of a larger program (Multimedia Arts program) and serves as a prerequisite to otehr successive subjects.

^it's okay. I just found out from yesterday's lesson about the difference between decibels and bits and how a high value of bits could prove to be fatal once heard by the human ear :)

BTW, I know for once that Slam Dunk used to air on ABC, but after viewing the ABC-5 version of SD's 15th episode, ngayon ko lang narealize na iba pala an-g mga nag-dub sa show noon. If I was to compare between teh two dubs, I'd choose GMA's version. I was kinda expecting in the ABC 5 dub uploaded on Youtube that Rukawa was to utter the word "gunggong" to Hanamichi but turns out, it really came from the latter version.

j5bata, i take it you are taking up multimedia arts then? i saw the course prospectus and the subjects are interesting, if only the college offers the subjects (sound desiign/mixing.editing) as separate workshops...

Maybe it would be better (and cheaper) to work as an intern in the various production houses...

you wanna be a dubber? call the local tv stations, look for the dubbing department or studio, ask for a dubbing director and ask him/her for an audition.

in the case of ABSCBN its easy to enough to get to talk to one of the dubbing directors. GMA the dubbing is outsourced so you might try calling ALTA productions instead, afaik the dubbers in TV5 also come from ABSCBN so your best bet would be the latter.

OR you could go to a dubbing workshop. just google creativoices voice acting workshop. the "other" dubbing workshop is uh....lol.

Yes I am. I'm not sure exactly but once I reach my senior year, I have to pick one of my course's major tracks: Photography, Video, Audio, and Animation tracks. My electives should also reflect my chosen track kaya sa ngayon di pa ako maka-decide kasi split ako between choosing two tracks (photography and audio).

Fortunately, people in the MMA program are being trained for all the tracks mentioned before going straight ahead into choosing one in the long-term.

Aya Blanco Bejer is the Tagalog voice of Dora the Explorer. Was a bit surprised since I thought she retired from dubbing already. Television and movie dubbers

"They are heard round the world. They are the voices of the biggest kung fu stars of Hong Kong and the most memorable anime characters from Japan. Audiences in America, Europe, Asia and Africa know their lines by heart. And they aren’t even in the credits. Filipinos have been dubbing films into English for decades. Now, one company reveals the workings of this lucrative business.

Jeremy Domingo and Henry Strzalkowski reveal one it takes to be the voice of the stars.

Generations of Filipinos have grown up with fond memories of their work, most especially for animation. “I started in 1979 with Questor. In Voltes V, I was Dr. Armstrong. I was the voice of Rick and Professor Yurgen in Daimos,” Strzalkowski recalls his work for seminal anime television series.

For his part, Domingo has helped introduce today to the latest cartoon characters. “I was Piccolo on Dragon Ball for about a season or two. And there was another animation called Raijin Oh, a couple of series was lasted only for about a season or two,” he reveals.

Domingo and Strzalkowski are among the many Filipinos responsible for the great improvement in the dubbing of Hong Kong films—once the fodder of jokes. Their involvement coincided with the renaissance of Chinese movies. Strzalkowski contributed his talents to such critically acclaimed movies as Infernal Affairs (2002), later remade by Hollywood as Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006). Domingo recalls working for Hong Kong blockbusters starring Jet Li and Sammo Hung. Today, there is still much dubbing work for the catalog of film companies, be they grind house flicks or cinema classics.

But most of this work goes on unsung. “It was kind of funny that how it comes back without knowledge that it was a Pinoy product,” says Domingo.

Voice acting

Like most dubbers, Domingo and Strzalkowski are theater actors who can take on various accents that their roles require. More than just reading lines and adopting voices, they are acting out part.

“I’ve been a professional theater actor since 1990, as part of Repertory Philippines. We did a lot of American and British comedies. When you do a Neil Saimon comedy—the dynamics of the language, the humor, the timing—it has to be original. I also did a lot of stiff upper lip British roles,” Domingo recalls.

Strzalkowski notes, “There was a time when it came as a second nature to us, especially the American accents.

It also helps having been exposed to various cultures.

Domingo reveals, “Apart from a childhood’s spent watching too much TV and movies [it’s also because] I’m a diplomatic brat. I lived in Hawaii, California, Germany, where I really had a lot of exposure two different accents growing up and doing the material that we did.”

Strzalkowski, the son of a Polish expatriate and Filipina, notes that he studied in local international schools where picked up on a lot of accents.

More than just reading lines

Dubbing means more than just reading off a literal translation. It means reworking the script to capture nuances and humor as well as syncing the syllabication to the film actor’s mouth. Being a dubber necessitates becoming a scriptwriter as well.

“You do get a rough translation. But you have to the translate the lines to make sense. I think preparing a script is one of the most time-consuming tasks,” confesses Domingo.

“One of the demands and challenges is keeping the scripts of today because you are, that’s one of the components that you need. One of the major components in dubbing is having a workable script. If your dubbing for about 4-5 episodes, you have 7-8 dubbers doing that, then your script writers have to keep up with that demand. And that’s actually one of the most challenging things to do. Getting the scripts done,” he explains.

“A script for a full featured takes about five days or a week,” adds Strzalkowski.

Curiously, these Filipino voice actors admit that the hardest language to dub is Tagalog.

“Tagalog into English is peculiarly tough. Chinese and Spanish, and maybe Japanese are the bulk of material that dubbers do. If the character says ‘hindi,’ the English translation is ‘no.’ That’s two syllables versus one,” Domingo explains.

Speaking business

Besides being an acclaimed theater actor, Domingo is president and artistic director of Word of Mouth Productions, which is involved in theater productions as well as dubbing.

He notes that the market is ripe: “It has expanded with DVDs. With a direct video market, you have different buyer. Just like the American film making industry for instance, not everything is going be for mainstream cinema. There are different target audiences. There are a lot of people who were shooting a wide variety of material because of the Indies exposure too. Anyone with the digital camera can become a filmmaker now.”

He adds, “Actually, apart from movies, there are a lot of TV series that are dubbed. The nation’s soap operas, there are telenovelas, chinovelas, koreanovelas, etc.”

Jeremy Domingo reveals how he plans to stay on top despite the global recession that has affected the movie industry: “I think it’s really just a matter of rolling with the punches. We’re grateful for the experiences we had. Gaining the experience, growing up in the industry and it’s time to put something together. I mean the market place is always evolving. When compared for 15 years ago, the dubbing industry is now pretty big. There are lots of people who we know that do it full time. The market changes here and abroad.”
