^ siguradong si Marvin Cruz ang King Maroon next year. :D
aside from Marvin Cruz, the "key players" for the Maroons next year could be Woody Co, VJ Serios and Magi Sison. baka pumasok din sa team next year ang Team B players na sina Kevin Astorga, Francis Juarez at Andrew Marfori.

Woody Co sentro? Isn't that asking too much?
Di ba one and done si Cacha?
El_Mestizo
Nov 7, 2006, 11:18 PM
Woody Co would probably retain his SF position. he's already effective in that position. other SFs in the team would probably be Martin Reyes (who can also play the SG position) and Joboy Hipolito (provided that Jay Agbayani would not make a comeback next year).
as for VJ Serios, ewan ko lang but i am thinking that he would move up to the PF position vacated by Nestor David. aside from VJ, two newcomers would play the PF position and one of them would be Fil-Am Kevin Astorga. should UP decide to draft SBC Red Cub Dave Marcelo into the team, baka PF ang maging position nung bata.
si Magi Sison ang naging tagapagmana ni Galen Cacha sa C position. sigurado nang si Magi ang starting center next year. however, Magi would need a reliable back-up center, with Team B member Francis Juarez being the most likely candidate.
so far, ang tsismis sa peyups.com ay si Paul Sorongon daw ang "mawawala" sa Team A next year.
PROBABLE UP MBT LINE-UP IN 2007:
PG - Cruz (team captain), Braganza, rookie (should Sorongon does leave the team next year)
SG - Epres, De Asis, Maniego, Salvador
SF - Co, Reyes, Hipolito
PF - Serios, rookie, rookie
C - Sison, rookie

JRU won over UP, 64-51. mukhang hindi pa ganun ka-cohesive ang Team A at Team B players doon bukod sa hindi nga si Coach Joe Lipa ang nag-coach dahil kakaopera lang sa kanya.

according to the discussions in gameface.ph:
1. the returning players of the UP Fighting Maroons for Season 70 are Marvin Cruz, Vicmel Epres, Woody Co, VJ Serios, Migs De Asis, Martin Reyes and Magi Sison.
2. Paul Sorongon, Miggy Maniego, Dan Salvador and Arvin Braganza are out from the team since December 2006.
3. among those who might join UP in Season 70 are Ateneo Blue Eaglet Mike Gamboa and FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws Dexter Rosales, Anthony Paulino and Mark Lopez.

i've been watching marvin sa pbl and kung ganun din ang laro nya sa uaap, i think magiging okay naman basta may maganda din suporta from the other players.
Paul Sorongon, Miggy Maniego, Dan Salvador and Arvin Braganza are out from the team since December 2006.
huwaaat?? but huwaaay? sayang naman si miggy maniego.
El^Mestizo
Jan 28, 2007, 12:00 PM
jean grey: Sorongon, Maniego, Salvador and Braganza were culled from the team because the coaching staff believed that the team would need to give room to new talented blood (Gamboa, Rosales, Paulino and Lopez) and some talented former UP Team B players (Marfori, Dela Victoria?), thus leading to the decision to cull the least performing players.
oh... wait... sinasabi gameface.ph na yung moves ngayon sa UP seems to be in preparation for 2008. asahan na din natin na baka walang Marvin Cruz tayong makikita in Season 70 dahil baka magpa-draft na siya sa PBA.

actually, according to some tsismis in peyups.com, (again i said it was according to tsismis ), it was actually the coaching staff that decided that Marvin would not be taken in for next year's team. For what reason? They wanted to train the two prospective point guards for the 2008 title run.

What I'm getting is that MJ is a very competitive person, and he sees this as an interesting, new challenge. Hehe, who wouldn't be challenged? You're talking about turning the UP Maroons into championship contenders. Challenges don't come any more difficult than that. May kasama na ring kaunting PR.

i strongly agree with this. *okay*
we should not let the hypocrisy of the minority go into the way of developing our sports programs, especially our basketball team. if MJ is "really sincere" in helping UP out, then let us grab of the opportunity.

Our sports programs, whether they want to admit it or not, needs the financial help.

Bono, Cruz leave UAAP, set sights on PBA
By Joey Villar
The Philippine Star 03/25/2007
Adamson’s Ken Bono and University of the Philippines’ Marvin Cruz, two of the best performers in college basketball last year, will not be returning to their respective schools for the coming UAAP season.
Bono, the 2006 UAAP MVP, and Cruz, a member of the UAAP First Mythical Team, have both decided to forgo the final year of their eligibility in the UAAP to make themselves available for the PBA rookie draft in August.
"Marvin (Cruz) will not be returning to UP this season because he will pursue his PBA dream this year," said Charlie Dy, Cruz’s manager.
"He’s applying for the PBA draft," said a source close to Bono.
Bono was reportedly disappointed with the Marcelino-based school’s decision to cut his monthly allowance just a few weeks after powering the Falcons to their first ever Final Four appearance since the format was introduced in the league in the 90s.
"I guess Adamson didn’t need Ken anymore because they cut his allowance after the last UAAP campaign," said the same source.
Cruz, who spearheaded UPIS’ first and only title in the UAAP juniors five years back, had earlier said he would complete his five-year tour of duty with the Maroons but had a change of heart.
His reported spat with UP coach Joe Lipa could be one of the reasons he’ll turn pro this year.
Cruz has been picked as among the backcourt players of the Harbour Centre-RP team bound for the SEABA Championships Cup in Jakarta April 9-14. Bono snubbed the tryout for the same team handled by coach Junel Baculi.

Seems like this is a virtual overhaul of the team. I wonder how good the new recruits are, and while I know that this radical adjustment is in preparation for 2008 what about our chances in the coming season? If only our super rookies would improve much as they enter their second season in the UAAP, and if VJ Serios and Magi Sison would be able to hold their own against the other big men from other teams, and if our incoming rookie PG's would turn out to be super rookies too, then I think our team for next season would be better than the team we had last year.
Pero, I also expect the competition to be tougher this time, due to DLSU's re-entry, and ofcourse UE would be eyeing revenge, and Jervy Cruz and USTe would be back, kaya baka mahirapan pa rin tayong maka Final 4

hindi natin alam kung anong pwedeng kalabasan ng UP Fighting Maroons in the coming year. ang dating kasi sa akin nung current composition ng team, talagang massive overhaul pero hindi ko masisisi ang coaching staff for doing so kasi ganun din naman ang mangyayari sa team in 2008, the year when UP is celebrating its centennial anniversary and the target year for Joe Lipa's "bring back the crown to Diliman" plans. 2008 is also the year when the Maroons will lose Marvin Cruz should he opted to play his last year in the UAAP this year- meaning, hindi na kasama si Marvelous Marvin sa team at mahirap nang palitan ang iiwan niyang void sa team by that time, unless the rookies of 2006 and 2007 all step-up.
2007 will be a much tougher year for the Maroons to trek the route to the Final Four or, even, the Finals and the Championship title because of the return of perennial finalist La Salle Green Archers, which wants to seek revenge against the other seven members of the UAAP that voted for DLSU's one-year suspension and to regain lost basketball glory; the strength of defending champs UST Growling Tigers; the seemingly strong UE Red Warriors, which showed prowess during the off-season tournaments; and the seemingly unpredictable developments in Ateneo, FEU, Adamson and NU, all of which could be very strong opponents to UP. ngayon na medyo mahaba pa ang panahon bago magsimula ang Season 70, Joe Lipa and the rest of the UP coaching staff should come up with ways to enhance the individual skills of each team player and increase the cohesion and communication of the Maroons as a whole. yung three-month period between now and July should be utilized to the best and the fullest to transform the returning players and the new recruits (Mike Gamboa, Dexter Rosales, Mark Lopez, Anthony Paulino, Kyle Yulo and, hopefully, a VERY GOOD big man who can play power forward or center) into CHAMPION-QUALITY players.

I trust that the coaching staff would do its best to whip the team into fighting form before the start of the season, as I trust that this radical overhaul was made not without good reason. But should that be a tall order and perhaps asking too much from a team that hasn't played together that long I just hope that our performance next year (read: championship caliber) would be worth all the frustrations that we suffer this coming season. And while I would like to look at it as UP's 'birthing pains' it wouldn't hurt to win not so few a game ;)

^ actually, i am hoping that the UP Fighting Maroons of the 2007-2008 UAAP season would be transformed into something similar to the UE Red Warriors of the 2004-2005 season- a team comprised of some seasoned veterans (e.g. KG Cañaleta and Paolo Hubalde) and promising rookies (e.g. Marcy Arellano and Earn Saguindel) and lead by then rookie coach Dindo Pumaren that eventually ended up in the Final Four that season.
if only to be developed well, the Maroons have a lot of potential which can bring them not only to its first Final Four appearance in the 21st century (the last time UP was in the Final Four was in 1997, making it the only UAAP member without a Final Four appearance in the 21st century) but also to a possible championship title commencing in 2007 and running for several more years. the Maroons have promising sophies such as Woody Co, Migs De Asis, Martin Reyes, VJ Serios (who would play for UP for the last time this year) and Magi Sison who could bring much needed leadership and skill to the team. UP also has quality rookies waiting for their chance to play college basketball for the first time such as Mike Gamboa, Dexter Rosales, Kyle Yulo, Anthony Paulino and Mark Lopez. of course, the Maroons is under the tutelage of basketball coaching legend Joe Lipa and his very able assistants who can help guide the team from Diliman to a Final Four appearance and, maybe, a championship title in 2007.
hopefully, 2007 will be a kinder year for the UP Fighting Maroons, with the team from Diliman finally snapping its ten-year Final Four appearance drought and, God willing, its 21-year championship title drought. ;)

We know that various plans are afoot in preparation for the UP centennial. Colleges/Departments and non-academic units are preparing to launch their respective projects in time for the celebrations. There is even a proposal to sell commemorative tiles inscribed with the name of the donor that will ring the entire academic oval (I'm quite ambivalent about this one, though). But besides hosting the 71st Season, is there a University-wide plan (that will include the alumni) to drum up our campaign for the UAAP crown in 2008?

hi ferminadaza! :)
regarding your first post, sadly, hindi ganun ka-cohesive ang UP community as far as support for our sports teams' individual campaigns are concerned. kulang na kulang na nga tayo sa community-based support coming from the students, the faculty and the employees tapos hindi pa ganun ka-supportive ang alumni unlike the private institutions such as Ateneo, La Salle, UST and San Beda na kung saan ay all out ang suporta sa kanilang sports teams.
isa pang problema kung bakit hindi ganun kalaki ang suporta ng UP community sa sports teams natin ay dahil parang naghahanap ang mga tao sa atin ng "credible" na performance sa bawat team. for instance, the turnout for UP MBT games would be much higher would be much higher if and only if the UP community would see the Maroons winning more games and, at least, landing themselves at the Final Four. however, hindi nangyayari yun dahil alam naman natin na medyo "dismal" ang performance natin pagdating sa basketball bukod pa sa halos walang nakukuhang matinong suporta ang MBT mula sa admin, sa mga estudyante, sa faculty, sa mga empleyado at sa alumni.
i am really hoping that there will be a University-wide campaign to jump start our sports teams' run in the 2007-2008 UAAP season both in terms of financial and non-financial (i.e., moral and spiritual) support. we must show some sort of school spirit if we want to boost the morale of our sports teams, most especially the UP MBT, and our Pep Squad ngayon na we aim for glory in the coming UAAP season.
as for keeping our hopes for the UP MBT up, we really have to be optimistic for the team even though it seems like a lot of obstacles are up ahead and our dreams of even landing in the Final Four this year seem to be far-fetched. i always believe in what Joe Lipa and the rest of the UP coaching staff and each and every Maroon can do but we can only boost the morale of the team kung malalaman nila na todo suporta sa kanila ang buong UP community.
if things would turn out fine and if God would allow it, baka hindi lang Final Four ang marating ng UP MBT this year and in the coming years kundi pati ang Finals at ang matagal na nating inaasam na Championship Title sa UAAP men's basketball. we have to remember that UP has a ten-year Final Four appearance drought (we are the only UAAP member without a Final Four appearance in the 21st century) and a 21-year championship title drought. let us all pray for and continue supporting the MBT in order for them to gain the inspiration to snap the two droughts that the Maroons have for quite some time now.

School spirit doesn't spill over into the sports arena :( But come to think of it, our school spirit isn't in any way like what Ateneo and DLSU have. Perhaps it's in the the kind of atmosphere and training that we have as a university. I'm not saying that it's all out bad but it has its advantages and at the same time its downside. I just hope that the former outweighs the latter in things that really matter. *okay*

talagang naniniwala ako na lalabas ang suporta ng UP community sa sports teams natin, most especially the MBT, kapag nakakakita sila ng resulta. remember in 2004, when the MBT had a winning streak (until it was ended by DLSU) and almost made it into the Final Four, doon biglang lumabas ang all-out support na galing sa UP community.
UP coaching staff... limited support now but all-out support would only come when members of the UP community see results.

^ ang problema kasi sa atin sa UP, most of us do not owe loyalty to the alma mater. we're only connected to UP from the time we register as UP students for the first time up to the time of graduation. there is simply no bond that connects the UP alumni to the alma mater, thanks to the apparent lack of school spirit in State U.
i might have studied HS in La Salle (La Salle Greenhills) and studied college in UP but i have always been more loyal to State U than La Salle (although i have to admit that i love bashing Ateneo during our HS reunions... i'd rather be green than be blue. :glee::lol: ). ;)

One thing crossed my mind when I saw Reyes play for Welcoat. Sana noon niya ginawa yung magandang performance noong part pa siya ng maroons. sayang. Pero wala na tayo magagawa. Ang pinakasayang pa rin for me was the team of Gahol, Serrano, Mendoza, Gamboa, and Racho that disbanded when they were so ripe for the championship. The team was balanced in terms of offense and defense. Mendoza shot the lights out of the UAAP while Serrano provided the steals and hustle. That team would have been good for at least two crowns.

the timeless "charisma" of Joe Lipa towards basketball star wannabes is really a blessing to the UP MBT. if not to the presence of Da Nose in Diliman, wala sigurong mga basketball star wannabes ang pupunta sa mga tryouts sa CHK at wala sigurong mga tulad nina Woody Co, Migs De Asis, Martin Reyes, Mike Gamboa at Dexter Rosales na maglalaro para sa Maroons.

^ mga 6'4" or 6'5" yata. Soc Rivera is the "star player" of the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws and, just like Mike Gamboa of the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, a member of the 2006 UAAP Juniors Mythical Five.
many call Soc Rivera as the young Arwind Santos- magaling nang tumira sa labas, magaling pang pumorma at tumira sa loob at pati porma ni Arwind Santos, kuhang kuha nung bata. sobrang swerte ng UP dahil pinag-aagawan ang batang ito ng maraming teams sa UAAP at sa NCAA, just like the other seven players that the Maroons were able to snatch- Gamboa, Wong, Rosales, Lopez, Paulino, Yulo and Lozano.

^If everything seems to be falling into its proper places, that means all we need for us to snatch a place in the final four is for the team to work on their cohesion and for the UP community to provide solid support. The future truly looks rosy!
If I remember it correctly, our turnovers (brought about by unecessary miscues) spelled a huge difference between our victories and losses last season. Those turnovers almost gave me a heart attack. I hope Coach Joe could prevent my premature death this season

^ well said, ferminadaza. :)
i am hoping that the boys, most especially the rookies, would really know each other and become more cohesive as a team just in time for Season 70. maraming magandang balita na lumalabas ngayon regarding sa recruitment pero mas maganda kung mas magiging battle-hardened ang mga bata natin during the off-season tournaments para mas lalo silang maging handa for the upcoming UAAP season. i really hope they mature in time for UP's bid to end its ten-year Final Four appearance drought and, God-willing, 21-year championship title drought in 2007.
i see a UE Red Warriors of 2004 in the UP Fighting Maroons of 2007- a team mostly comprised of rookies and sophomores but clear contenders for the 2007 UAAP men's basketball championship title.

During the 2005 season, after UP got to an early 3-0 start, medyo makikita mo na nagbabalik ang support. We were able to occupy a substantial portion of the Araneta during the UP-Ateneo game. Tapos during the 2nd Battle of Katipunan, at the BEG, na occupy natin ang mga 1/2 ng bleachers BEG, during the 1st part of the game, mas maraming taga-UP kesa sa mga taga Ateneo.
I think if they can string 2 or 3 early wins, unti-unting pupunta ang mga taga-UP sa laro.
ferminadaza
Apr 22, 2007, 11:34 PM
Thanks, El Mestizo :)
I understand that we usually have the pep rallies in the gym. But have we tried having them in, let's say the AS steps where student traffic is at its heaviest? If we hold the pep rallies at the AS steps it would certainly attract the attention and perhaps pique the imagination of a lot of students, non-acad staff and faculty.
Proud to be AKBAYAN!
El^Mestizo
Apr 23, 2007, 12:01 AM
^ depende na yan sa organizers ng pep rally if they want to shift location. kung ako kasi ang masusunod, i would have two pep rallies per year- a pep rally to coincide with the UP Fair at the Sunken Garden and the pep rally before the start of the UAAP season. ;)
however, i have to agree with what math_techie said. talagang hindi ganun kalaki ang suporta ng UP community not only sa MBT but to all other UP sports teams. dumadating lang ang suporta kapag nakakakita ang mga taga-UP ng resulta, thus increasing the pressure on coaches and members of UP varsity teams to perform very well in the UAAP and other sporting events where State U participates. :(
math_techie
Apr 23, 2007, 12:19 AM
Maybe, what they can do is for the admin to suspend all classes for one afternoon, and then the Pep, together with the varsity would march along the acad oval (parang lantern parade), tapos tuwing hihinto sa tapat ng AS Steps or sa Engg Steps, the pep or some performers would perform, tapps ipapakilala nila yung mga varsity players.

math_techie: magandang idea yan. :)
kung sa Academic Oval gagawin yung parang pep rally na parade ang dating, there should be three stops- the AS steps, the Engineering steps and, for sentimental reasons, the Oblation. of course, dapat maki-coordinate ang administration sa plan na ito by suspending classes for just one afternoon in order to give way to the all-UP community pep rally. ;)
of course, sa 2008, i hope it could be any one among UP vs ADMU, UP vs DLSU and UP vs UST sa Finals, with the Maroons breaking the "jinx" by emerging as 2008 UAAP men's basketball champions. :D

This just doesn't look right. That has to be UP-Ateneo, not Ateneo-UP. The more popular and better school must always come first when matching them together, not the lesser known school. It's the same way people say: Harvard-Dartmouth or Oxford-Bristol.

A new hope, a new home

“WOODY!” barks Joe Lipa toward his sophomore forward Woodward Co, who won last University Athletic Association season’s Rookie of the Year award. “Take a free throw. If you make it, water break tayo. If not, sprint kayong lahat.”
Co misses the free throw as the dead-tired University of the Philippines (UP) Maroons let out a collective groan. They have been practicing for more than three hours now on this sunny Saturday morning in preparation for the Season 70 Men’s Basketball campaign. They just ran coach Joe Lipa’s five-minute sprint drill that caps their practices. It’s designed to see how the players raise their energy level that should serve them in good stead in a game’s closing minutes, explains assistant coach Jojo Villa.
Sophomore forward Veejay Serios, who is nursing an ankle sprain, mans the electronic timer. Lipa signals for him to add another minute. The 15 players scatter into the three courts and run a series of sets predicated on constant motion.
“Sprint, Soc. Sprint,” thunders Lipa at rookie Socrates Rivera from Far Eastern University (FEU)-FERN.
The buzzer goes off. “Take another free throw, Woody.”
Rookie point guard Mike Gamboa, late of Ateneo’s champion Blue Eaglets team, clutches a plastic cup, ready to make a dash toward the water cooler. “Shoot mo,” he eggs on amid a buzz of similar words of encouragement.
The ball bounces on the rim once, twice before it settles in. The team lets out a collective whoop and sigh of relief. Practice is over.
Lipa walks over to where the throng of dehydrated players gulping down the precious gallons of ice-cold water. “Sa puso ang labanan, boys,” summarizes their legendary coach. “Diyan tayo magkakasubukan. Never give up.”
He then fishes out Rivera and two other recruits (or walk-ins) from FEU-FERN—guards Mark Lopez and Dexter Rosales—to tell their story on not giving up on their hoops dreams.
Rivera, his sweat dripping profusely, doesn’t mince his words. “Syempre gusto rin naman naming maglaro sa seniors ng FEU,” reveals the 6’5” player from Pampanga. “Pero nu’ng na-disband ’yung seniors nang di sila nakapasok sa Final Four, eh, napaisip kami na paano kung hindi rin kami nakapasok sa semis? Saan kami pupulutin pagkatapos? Sayang ’yung pagkakataon. Hindi naman masamang magbalak magpunta kung saan ka may chance ng magandang future.”
Lopez adds: “Lahat kami ganun ’yung pakiramdam kaya kami umalis. Magulo talaga.”
Rivera and Lopez were put on a “protected list” by FEU officials as they reached an agreement with their UP counterparts to stem the exodus of the Morayta-based school’s blue-chip players. Rosales and Jomar Paulino, who both weren’t on that protected list, were let go. “Marami na raw silang point guard,” explains Rosales, who was clearly disappointed after he was led to believe that he had a place on the senior’s squad. “Gan’un naman ’dun, magkamali ka lang, ayaw ka na ng team management.”
When FEU officials found out that Lopez and, later on, Rivera were trying out at UP, their scholarships were revoked and were informed that they had to pay certain dues that they accrued over the years—food allowances, transportation expenses, etc.
FEU athletics director Mark Molina said that these dues are normal and are always settled before players move on. Lopez was billed P16,000, while Rivera was tagged P116,000. Both were shocked that they had to settle any amount at all, since they weren’t informed of any “payables” when they were first recruited. What makes it even more surprising is that Rosales, who was also on scholarship, wasn’t asked to pay anything.
“Asar siguro sila sa amin. Pero mukhang mas asar sila kay Soc,” jokes Lopez. They recount how in a recent match between the two schools in a preseason tournament the newly reorganized Tamaraws were instructed to show no mercy and to pummel them into submission. The Tamaraws won as expected but only by eight points, which was a moral victory of sorts for the UP team, since they were said to be of no match to the perennial basketball power. “Personalan na masyado ‘to,” says Rivera, shaking his head. “Siguro napagalitan sila sa locker room dahil gan’un lang ’yung pagkapanalo nila.”
In spite of the rift, Molina believes that it will all be resolved soon. “I expect him to suit up for UP in the coming season. It is just an unfortunate incident.”
The incident has sparked the suspiciously timed passing of what is now called “The Soc Rivera Rule,” where high-school players who wish to transfer to another school for college should first secure a release, if not sit out a year of residency. “The proposal for that has been on the table for a couple of years now,” confirms Ricky Palou, Ateneo de Manila University’s athletics director. “It was passed just recently and all parties—those for and against—made their feelings known about it. But it wasn’t like it was rammed down our throats.”
The voting went 4-2, in favor of the rule with Ateneo and UP being the only dissenting votes. University of the East, being the host school this year, abstained and would cast its vote in the event of a tie. De La Salle University wasn’t present at the meeting since its representative would only come onboard as of the first week of June.
“I spoke with [FEU team manager] Anton Montinola,” agrees Lipa. “As soon as the dues for Soc are settled, then they will release his papers. But we still have to discuss this some more, because we don’t know where to get that kind of amount.”
The Maroons are on their way to the dorm for a quick shower. They have team lunch at The Fort and the rookies—especially the ones from FEU-FERN—are clearly excited. “Parang pamilya kami rito,” says Rivera before parting. “Gusto ko lang makapaglaro.”
There’s a fresh breeze of hope in the State University right now in spite of the current row with FEU. It has two talented batches of rookies, including this current one, ensuring that they’ll be competitive over the next few years. The dingy gym has certainly seen better days but to Soc Rivera, Mark Lopez, Dexter Rosales and Jomar Paulino, it’s home. And they don’t mind running sprints as long as they have Co to bail them out and Lipa to back them up.

Hala.
Di ko masyado naintindihan yung logic behind that new rule. Parang para sakin kasi, college=new life. Di ko gets kung bakit kelangan pa mag-sit out for one season katulad kung magtransfer ka.. Ewan. Sana maayos na para makapaglaro na yung mga rookies for UP.

matagal na rin akong di nagbabasa ng peyups at maroon mania kasi wala naman sense ang pinagsasabi nila dun puros self-gratification and ego lang ata ang mga post dun even if they know that they loss to a better team what you will hear is that they should have won, hindi talaga sila graceful tumangap ng talo mga nadaya daw sila lagi
Hence, it is not surprising that those UP alumni who are booted out of local election always cries foul..payo ko sa inyo wag na kayong mag basa duon walang kwenta it is such a waste of time puros ganito .."they are so good, they are like this and they are the best etc.etc" parang praning sa kakaisip na sila lang ang matalino ganun ang tingin ko sa kanila after reading a few thread walang kwenta. They will not contribute to our growth both intellectually and spiritually they are so consumed on the thought that they are the best that they often forget to be human and keep a sense of humility. ang yabang kung magsalita kaya ako hindi na ako nag babasa ng peyups walang kwenta.

So, if they lose Rivera because of the recent brouhaha, UP will only have 1 legitimate center in the person of Sison, who certainly is not yet in the league of Paras, Juinio and Gahol. I think De Asis stands more than 5'8".

matagal na rin akong di nagbabasa ng peyups at maroon mania kasi wala naman sense ang pinagsasabi nila dun puros self-gratification and ego lang ata ang mga post dun even if they know that they loss to a better team what you will hear is that they should have won, hindi talaga sila graceful tumangap ng talo mga nadaya daw sila lagi
They will not contribute to our growth both intellectually and spiritually they are so consumed on the thought that they are the best that they often forget to be human and keep a sense of humility. ang yabang kung magsalita kaya ako hindi na ako nag babasa ng peyups walang kwenta.

honestly we have the same observations. walang kuwenta ang mga posts dun, instead puro non-sense chit chats ang nababasa ko at kung hindi man ay mga self-proclaimed at appreciation sa kanilang squad which is very elementary. they cannot even defend their squad and present supporting FCATS at hindi sariling opinion. Naturingan silang mga taga UP, pero wala silang kuwentang makipag argumento.Kudos to this thread, at least we came up something constructive, objective and informative thread like this.

well, si Sison nga ang masasabi natin na legitimate center for the Maroons. his back-ups are Soc Rivera and Andrew Marfori, although they are more of power forwards than centers (AFAIK, Rivera is classified as a power forward-center with him being the second tallest guy in the line-up). hopefully, maayos na ang problema ni Soc at cleared siya para maglaro for UP this year. i am also hoping that Magi Sison has matured significantly dahil talagang kailangan ng UP ang mga katulad niya.
possible centers: Sison and Rivera
possible power forwards: Marfori and Lozano
as for De Asis, mga between 5'8" and 5'10" siguro ang height nung bata. basta ang sigurado ako ay mas matangkad siya kay Marvin Cruz. :D

UP-AdU game of Season 69, first round was on replay on Studio 23 kanina. Turn-over! :rotflmao: Goodbye, Marvin Cruz! haha :rotflmao:
Good news yung kay Soc Rivera kung tunay nga na cleared na sya to play for the Maroons!!
UP FIGHT!!

For me the key players who need to step up for the team to perform well this season are the following:
Serios - needs to fill the shoes vacated by Nestor in every way
Gamboa - will need to make an impact by not playing like a rookie and more like a seasoned veteran. Can use his intensity to offset his lack in height and experience
Reyes - i heard he plays D now. Just needs to improve on his aggressiveness and offensive arsenal. Should emulate Jeff Chan
Sison/Marfori - know their roles..get the rebounds and block shots
Lopez - provide quality minutes when called upon

Reyes, Martin (6'0"; 2nd yr)
Rivera, Soc (6'5"; 1st yr)
Rosales, Dexter (5'10"; 1st yr)
Serios, Veejay (6'3"; graduating)
Sison, Magi (6'6"; 2nd yr)
Wong, Julius (6'1"; 1st yr)
re: Agbayani's eligibility, hindi ko alam kung paano mag-apply ang rule sa kanya. he is a batchmate of JV Casio, Ford Arao and Yuri Escueta in San Beda and made his debut in the UAAP in 2003 and played for UP until 2005. he sat out half of UAAP Season 68 (2005-2006) due to injuries and he was not included in the UP line-up for Season 69 (2006-2007), thus spending time in the practice pool as he was in the process of recovery. ngayong 2007-2008 season lang ulit nakabalik si Agbayani sa team.
kung hindi counted ang 2006-2007 season, he will be eligible to play for UP until next season.

yup. i will be there, thanks to a complimentary ticket given to me by a good friend of mine who happens to be a brod of Joe Lipa. :)
medyo malaki-laki yung amount na kailangan habulin ng MBT- P3,000,000. hopefully malaki ang maitulong ng "Maroon Pride" sa team. kailangan talaga ng MBT at ng iba pang sports teams ng UP ang financial and moral support from the UP community.
by the way, aside from "Maroon Pride", meron ding fund raiser entitled "Push on UP IV" na gagawin on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 sa UP Theater, 3:00PM and 7:00PM. :)

Tickets for the "Maroon Pride" dinner are available at the UPAA office. I am not sure if I should buy a ticket (i'm on vacation from grad studies at U of Hawai'i) since I only took up law at UP. I took my undergrad at DLSU and the Green Archers are already well-supported by loyal alumni.

1. last night's "Maroon Pride" was actually a fund-raising dinner exclusively for the benefit of the UP MBT. "Push on UP IV" on July 4 (take note: 3:00PM and 7:00PM, UP Theater) is the UP Pep Rally, which will be participated in by the MBT and all other UP sports teams.
funds to be derived from the sales of "Push on UP IV" tickets will be used to answer the needs of ALL UP sports teams (e.g. repair of the team bus, repair of the dance area).
2. well, i attended "Maroon Pride" last night and i did not get any souvenir item. however, it's just fine with me if there was no souvenir (aside from the ticket) because i was much happier having bonded with the MBT and the UP coaching staff. :)
as for the Pep Rally on Wednesday, hindi ko lang alam kung meron.

hi! :)
Maroon Pride went well, although the venue (UP Bahay ng Alumni) was not that packed. it was one fun night because the members of the MBT were so game and actually interacted with members of the UP community and friends who were present at the event. all members of the 15-man line-up this year were present, so were the members of the UP coaching staff. some former members of the UP MBT such as Coach Ryan Gregorio and former UP courtside reporter Gretchen Fullido were also present.
it was nice though that the event was also used as a venue by some alumni and friends to air their concerns for the team to Coach Joe Lipa. Coach Ilong recognized and answered all concerns by those present at the event, although he did not make any promise regarding the performance of the Maroons this year except that he wanted all of the boys to GRADUATE FROM UP and not become mere basketball mercenaries. ;)
Maroon Pride was also the first time that i saw the new UP jersey. the jersey's design was far better than those from previous seasons. one other distinguishable feature of the new UP jersey: this year's corporate sponsor, Eastern Telecom, has its name printed on the jersey. ;)
