actually, i've been reading your thread for quite some time...
finally, i decided to join...btw, i'm from singapore thread..
i'm into IT field here....
here it is..i'm have plans of migrating to canada....
my questions are:
1) how's the job market there?specifically IT market?
2) will u still recommend me to try my luck there despite
of the economic crisis?
3) & in case i go there..which city, if any, will you advice
me to look for a job??or so to say, more job opportunites?
....thanks in advance
Chic_svelte
Nov 14, 2001, 05:55 PM
welcome, vonski! :D about your queries, ITs are in-demand in this part of the world, second to nurses. and if you wish to come here, choose the cities that are quite known like Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. But if you want to settle in Montreal and the other cities in Quebec, then there are added reqments to get there (French is a must too). In any opportunities that come along the way, you will never know if it's really for you until you grab it and try your luck. There's no harm in trying though. Just my point 7!!! :*)
Hey, isn't S'pore a nice place too? :D

v0nski,
I recommend trying for Calgary. Vancouver experienced major closeouts in the IT industry and Toronto is pretty saturated. Alberta where Calgary and Edmonton are, are highly recommended because the industry there is just about to boom.

I agree with pinkmoon, vonski!!! there are lots of opportunities for ITs here in Alberta esp in Calgary and Edmonton. And I think people are moving west so to speak :D

Martin urged to junk Arroyo but Ottawa cool to petition
Aug 18, 2005
By Carlito Pablo
http://www.asianpacificpost.com/news/article/628.html
Leftist groups in the Filipino * Canadian community across Canada have called on Prime Minister Paul Martin to withdraw his government‘s support from embattled Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is facing impeachment charges for alleged high crimes like rigging the 2004 elections.
In a letter dated July 15, Left-leaning clusters in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa urged Martin to “support the legitimate call of the Filipino people for Arroyo‘s resignation.“
“We hope that Canada can support measures, such as the proposed transitional council, that can lay the foundation for genuine development and a just and lasting peace in the Philippines,“ the petitioners told Martin.
A copy of the same letter, which appealed to Canada‘s “ideals of human rights, democracy and social justice,“ was also sent via email to Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew.
President Arroyo is being confronted by mounting calls for her resignation due to allegations that she fixed the results of the May 10, 2004 elections to defeat popular challenger, now deceased former actor Fernando Poe Jr.
The political crisis has been spurred by revelations of supposed wiretapped conversations between the President and Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano of the Commission on Elections, purportedly indicating that she was manipulating the outcome of the polls.
President Arroyo has rejected calls for her resignation. Hours before she delivered her State of the Nation Address last July 25, an impeachment complaint was lodged against her before the House of Representatives by a bloc of 42 lawmakers.
The impeachment complaint accused her of, among others, rigging the elections and receiving payoffs from “jueteng,“ an illegal numbers game.
It didn‘t help that a former employee of the Office of the President had come out recently to claim that Mrs. Arroyo was president during an alleged bribery of officials of the Commission on Elections to ensure her victory in the May 2004 elections.
The witness, Michaelangelo Zuce, also stated that the money was distributed by the Lilia Pineda, wife of Rodolfo Pineda who is said to be the biggest “jueteng“ operator in the Philippines. The Pinedas hail from President Arroyo‘s home town of Lubao in the province of Pampanga.
Ottawa promptly responded to the petition through an email dated July 18 by Executive Correspondence Office M. Bredeson.
But the response merely acknowledged receipt of the petition on behalf of Martin.
“You may be assured that your comments have been carefully noted,“ Bredeson said.
“I am certain that the Honourable Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to whom you indicate your message has already been forwarded, will also have appreciated being made aware of your views,“ Bredeson added.
The letter urging Martin to support calls for Arroyo‘s resignation was sent via email by Siklab (Advance the Rights and Welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers), Filipino Nurses Support Group, Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance, and the Philippine Women Centre of BC, all based in Vancouver.
Also signing the petition from Toronto were the Philippine Network for Justice and Peace, Philippine Women Centre of Ontario, Filipino Canadian Youth Alliance-Toronto, and the Filipino Workers‘ Support Committee.
The letter was likewise signed by the Pilipinong Migrante sa Canada (Filipino Migrants in Canada) in Ottawa; and the Pinay Montreal (Filipino Women Montreal) and Kabataang Montreal (Filipino Youth Montreal).
Also a signatory to the petition was the National Alliance of Philippine Women in Canada.
Ottawa‘s response was silent on the petitioners‘ call seeking to enlist Martin‘s “help in rebuilding democracy and genuine peace in the Philippines.“
The petitioners had noted that Canada has “important and strategic economic interests in the country (Philippines).“
“Arroyo can no longer ensure this stability,” they said of the ties between the Philippines and Canada.
Mrs. Arroyo made an official visit to Canada in early 2002 as part of her three-nation trip that included the United States and the United Kingdom. Martin was then Minister of Finance in the government of then Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Philippine government records show that as of 2000, Canada was the 19th largest trading partner of the Philippines with bilateral trade totalling US$545.63 million.
The Philippines is in the top 10 list of recipient countries of Canadian foreign aid. #

Two Years Later: Lanot Case Still a Reminder of Our Community’s Marginalization
For immediate release: Nov. 29, 2004
On the second anniversary of the beating death of Mao Jomar Lanot outside of Sir Charles Tupper Secondary, the Filipino community continues to question, “where is closure for this case, where is justice?”
The trial of those accused of beating Jomar has hit a roadblock. The crown has said that it cannot proceed with the case due to a lack of reliable witnesses. One witness admitted to lying in previous testimony.
“The news about the witnesses is obviously devastating for the family,” says Carlo Sayo of the Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance/Ugnayan ng Kabataang Pilipino sa Canada (FCYA/UKPC). He continues, “but in the larger context of the community, it exposes the weakness of the justice system in pursuing the case to a satisfactory end. It is disheartening, and disempowering.”
Beyond the justice system, says Sayo, systemic racism in the education system and policies in immigration and multiculturalism that continue to disempower and marginalize communities of colour.
Sayo questions the sincerity of initiatives of the Vancouver Police District (VPD) to hold community forums to address the issue of youth violence, since they do not address the issue of systemic racism. Sayo also criticized more government dollars going towards policing programs. “Instead giving more money towards policing, more funding should be allocated to community organizations that are already doing solid anti-racism education.” With the recent media attention on conflicts between Filipino youth and other ethnic groups, Sayo says that the police must be accountable for how they profile youth of colour.
In a recent international conference, “Ipagpatuloy: (Continue On) Living the Storm” hosted by FCYA, Filipino youth talked about their issues, shared experiences of their community’s history in coming to Canada and the hardships they endured such as racism and discrimination. The conference drew in participants from Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York.
The Lanot case was brought up at the conference, as well as the case of Jeffrey Reodica, a 17-year old Filipino youth in Toronto who was shot three times in the back by a plain-clothes police officer.
“For us as youth, Jomar is a reminder of why we need to continue to educate, organize and empower our community,” says Sayo. “That is the best way to honor his memory.”

Local groups to rally for rights of migrant and immigrant workers
Vancouver, B.C. – Community groups plan to stage a May Day march and rally in solidarity with migrant and immigrant workers in Canada, including those who are undocumented.
Glecy Duran of SIKLAB – B.C., a Filipino migrant workers organization, said around 12 groups from Vancouver will join the protest to mark International Labour Day.
She said migrant and immigrant workers are one of the backbones of Canadian society, filling in cheap labour positions but whose basic human rights are often neither respected nor protected. “Migrant and immigrant workers from countries like the Philippines, Mexico and Palestine are highly-educated and skilled, yet they are trapped in the cleaning, food, factory, farm and retail jobs that other Canadians do not want,” she continued. “Some of the most vulnerable of these workers are the undocumented, who are forced into the underground economy.”
Rally organizers take inspiration from the millions of immigrants and their supporters who took to the streets in various U.S. cities to stand up against the criminalization of immigrants in early April. The widely unpopular Sensenbrener Act in the U.S. would criminalize whole immigrant communities and those providing services to the millions of undocumented people living and working in the country.
Migrant and immigrant workers in Canada have also protested their deplorable working conditions, racist accreditation policies and unjust deportations.
Ordinary migrant and immigrant workers cannot meet the rising costs of housing, public utilities, basic goods and services across Canada, especially those remitting most of their measly earnings to support their families in their home countries.
“Our demand to stop the exploitation of these workers comes at a time of unprecedented rollbacks of wages as well as the undermining of labor standards and other workers' rights,” explained Merryn Edwards of Grassroots Women. “By rallying on International Labour Day, we stand up for just wages and working conditions for working class women and all workers, and against attacks on migrant and immigrant communities in Canada,” she continued. “We call on Canada to stop deporting these workers and to act on their promise to address the accreditation barriers facing many migrant and immigrant workers,” stated Edwards.
The groups will also critique Canadian immigration policies, such as the Temporary Foreign Workers Movement and the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP), which bring in many of those workers from Third World countries.
“Canada capitalizes on the cheap and exploited labour of these people through racist immigration policies like the LCP,” stated Duran. “Under the LCP, we are forced to live and work in our employers’ homes under precarious conditions. Although Canada seeks to make us invisible, we recognize that we have common issues with other workers in Canada and that we must unite as workers for our fundamental rights,” she asserted.
The march and rally will take place on the west corner of Main Street and 18th Avenue in Vancouver on Monday, May 1 at 5:00pm.

Hi there! My husband and I are planning to migrate kaso hindi namin kaya ang gagastusin sa visa at show money. He's in healthcare (nursing assistant, he's not a registered nurse). Ang chance lang namin ay makahanap ng employer. Magbabakasakali po sana baka may kakilala kayo or if you work in a hospital na nangangailangan ng clinical aide/nursing assistant/caregiver, baka po pwede mag apply husband ko. Thanks in advance.
