More importantly, Pong was a consistent Dean's Lister when he was still in Holly Cross. During his first year in San Beda he almost landed in the Dean's List.

wow!....actually, am not surprised judging on they way he plays,...the way he makes decisions inside the court. i look at him as an intelligent player, the way i admired tonyboy espinosa of dlsu before. but escobal can achieve much more than tonyboy. he is more versatile......a quick thinking guard who can scan situations easily. strong in fundamentals, overflowing confidence and smart.....a real find.......i hope he can also make it as an A student, and become a model student-athlete to emulate.

When i saw Pong played in game 3, i was so suprised. Why? He is the one who bring the whole team in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Sya lang yung nakita kong may puso in that quarter. Yung big run ng PCU, sya *** yung lumalaban. He knows how to play with pressure. Parang si LA Tenorio. Galing pang dumiskarte. Keep up the good work Pong.

We interviewed Pong for a magazine (MEG), and nagulat ako, he speaks straight English, complete with accent! Taga-Davao pala sya, that's why he finds it easier to speak in English than Tagalog. Humble, self-effacing guy. I just hope the trappings of stardom won't "corrupt" him.

One of his profs is a lawyer here in the firm I'm working in. (His course is Marketing & Corporate Comm) The prof says Pong is smart & diligent, laging pumapasok and does well in class. Nung di daw sya umabot sa DL, he even asked the prof what he could do to get higher grades. Admirable na bata, said the lawyer, considering na star player pa sya ng Beda and, accoding to the prof, marami na daw sya naging students na players din, pero di nagprioritize ng studies. *okay*

from HCDC Sports News, Escobal was quoted:

"The primary reason why I decided to go for San Beda than to other UAAP and NCAA teams is because I'm very welcome there and I have a sense of belongingness with them, the coaching staff and players ", the six foot one Escobal said before he went to Manila.

"I think my future basketball career is with San Beda", Escobal, who led Holy Cross to a runner-up finished in the 2004 Asian Finals of the Adidas Streetball in Seoul, South Korea, said.

When I asked Pong if he dreams of playing professionally, sabi nya, "if God wills it", but he's also realistic. Sabi nya, "Gusto ko talaga makapagtapos kasi di naman ako forever maglalaro." I heard before that one of the reasons why Pong went to San Beda is because of the culture of the community. Bedans are known to be as someone who are "pwede sa five-star; pwede sa fishballs." That might be the clincher.

right, there are similarities. chris tiu even took a leave for one year to go to france for an exchange student program. when he returned he was as sharp as ever. both are also lookers...panghatak rin ng fans in the soft side. but as a player i find pong better becuase he's more versatile and this early he already shows he can lead a team.

better for him to finish college even if his basketball career overtakes it. basketball is not forever. he can take the way of former collegiate superstar Wesley Gonzales who is pursuing an MBA degree at Ateneo while playing professional basketball.

Standouts
Mr. Sixth Man surges!

By LEO ORTEGA LAPARAN II

San Beda Red Lions’ John Paul "Pong" Escobal is sharp, quick, smooth, solid, firm, and reliable – six adjectives that aptly led him to being chosen as the Gillette Vector Sixth Man.

Add to that a combination of good grades, good looks and impressive statistics that earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title in the recently concluded Gillette-Metro Basketball League (MBL) (Fr. Martin Division II Vector Cup), there wasn’t any doubt that he would eventually get hold of a title that Gillette deems as a "very important element in a basketball team’s lineup after the first five."

Elite. The guy who has set aside his ego so that he can come off the bench at a moment’s notice and fall right into the flow. One who is able to do whatever is necessary to help his team win… clearly the reliable one. The Sixth Man. Pong Escobal.

THE SEARCH IS OVER

From eight hopefuls, the native of Davao emerged at the zenith as the top choice overall after two months of intensive search.

Pong now joins the ranks of the original Gillette Vector First Five comprised of star Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) cagers Rich Alvarez, Paul Artadi, Wesley Gonzales, Enrico Villanueva, and James Yap as Gillette Vector endorsers. Together with the quintet, he will embark on a yearlong nationwide advertising, public relations and below-the-line campaigns.

For a candidate who hasn’t had any idea about the search, it was absolutely elating to have been named as the winner.

"At the start of the [Gillette-MBL/Gillette Vector Cup] tournament, alam namin na major sponsor ang Gillette," shares Pong in an interview at San Beda College in Mendiola, Manila. "And then, it was there na parang bumongga bigla, that they’re looking for the Sixth Man. Luckily, I was chosen as the first candidate. So, it sort of excited us like, ‘Okay pala ito, naghahanap pala sila ng candidates for the [title].’"

For him, it could have been enough – a privilege at that – being one of the candidates. "Ako nga mismo, hindi na nag-expect na mananalo pa."

Statistics or how well the player stacks up the points, qualitative or looks, and the Vector First Five’s choice comprised the score sheet for choosing the Sixth Man.

"We chose Escobal because he was the most qualified among all the Sixth Man candidates… He was the top choice of the First Five," says Gillette business manager Ramon Alcasid.

"[The Search for the Sixth man] is a great opportunity for us to recognize young and talented players out there who have what it takes to not only play ball, but look good while staying on top of their game," adds Gillette product manager Din-Din Simon.

LEAGUE LEADER

Pong has been dribbling and shooting the ball to the basket since childhood, but his official liking to the sport came when he joined his school’s varsity team. He was in sixth grade then.

"Noon ko pa lang nga nalaman na may varsity pala," he gushes, "and then more stints followed thereafter. From second year high school onwards, nagtuluy-tuloy na."

It was SBC Red Lions coach Nash Racela who "discovered" and admitted Pong to the team. Actually, he was recruited to the team.

"Around 2002, when I was still in first year college (in Holy Cross of Davao College), our varsity team played in Cavite. At the same time, naglaro rin ang San Beda Team doon. Nakita niya akong maglaro, and then he talked to my coach. He said, ‘I like the style of play of your players.’ But we did not talk there. And then, the next time around na pumunta kami rito sa Manila, naglaro kami sa [Far Easter University]. Nandoon na naman siya at nanood," Pong vividly narrates.

"‘Yun na, after the game, kinausap niya ako. Nasa first year pa rin ako noon. Sabi niya, ‘I want to get you to San Beda because you’re fit for my system.’ Sabi ko, ‘Coach, hindi naman ako makapag-decide agad kasi I had to consult my parents first.’ Sabi niya, ‘Sige, tatawagan kita pagdating mo sa Davao’," he goes on.

That informal talk between the two led to an unfavorable response from Pong’s party for that time being. "So, tumawag siya, kinausap niya ang parents ko. Sabi naman ng parents ko nung nag-usap kami, hindi na muna kasi gusto nila na matapos ko muna ‘yung pag-aaral ko sa Davao, saka ako pupunta rito sa Manila."

Three years hence, he finally made it to Manila. He arrived last April and has been with SBC ever since.

"I don’t know [why they recruited me] pero sabi kasi nila, may maitutulong ako sa team. San Beda is in a title drought for I think 28 years already and they’re really looking for a championship," he states, adding that he is hopeful for his team’s championship in 2006.

Pong is the league’s leader in individual statistics averaging 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 463.5 statistical points. He led the San Beda team to a championship by scoring 33 points in Gillette-MBL Vector Cup.

Among the Vector endorsers he identifies with the most, he singles out Yap. "I’m a big fan of the three-point, so I definitely like James’s style, his shooting from the outside! Kasi nga maliit ako for the team. I think I have my own style, pero siguro, as one trait in playing, I’d like to copy his shooting style kasi magaling siya roon," Pong relates.

STAR STUDENT

Currently pursuing a degree in Marketing and Corporate Communications in his sophomore year, Pong is looked upon by his teammates as a leader and as a role model. When not playing for the SBC team, he excels in his studies and extracurricular activities, as well.

During his free time, Pong loves to watch a movie and relax. "‘Yun talaga ‘yung pastime ko. Kung hindi man movies, TV lang," the homebody says. "It’s important to lead a balanced life. You should be healthy in mind body and spirit."

"It takes hard work to reach the top, so effort and dedication are important. Also, one needs to set priorities. Just like the situation I am in right now, which is being a student and an athlete at the same time. If you want to excel in both fields, kailangan seryoso ka sa mga ginagawa mo," he advises his fellow youth, especially students.

And for hardcourt aspirants, he insinuates: "In basketball, you must enjoy playing the game. But, at the same time, you also need to be serious because not all the time, it’s always play. And they say that every game is a championship game. I take it that way all the time."

Thanks for your opinion mapuaboy.

You haven't seen Ekwe and Pong play when they were still red shirting in San Beda in 2005 to comply with residency requirements.

At that time, they represented San Beda in the offseason leagues like Fr. Martin Cup, HAIL, etc.

In the 2005 Fr. Martin-Gillete Vector Cup, San Beda was the champion team. Pong Escobal made waves. He was chosen as the Gillete Sixth Man and MVP. He carried the team on his shoulders.

In fact, at that time he was doing everything for the team, shooting nearly 20 points per game (he made 36 points I think during the championship game, with 5 or 6 three pointers, aside from dishing out several assists).

Sam Ekwe at that time knew nothing about basketball. The Sam Ekwe you saw in Season 82 of the NCAA is not the same Ekwe months before that (that is why if you saw Sam Ekwe then and the Sam Ekwe now, you would really appreciate his drastic improvement.)

Pong Escobal was already making waves even before Sam Ekwe captured our imagination and elevated the NCAA to new heights.

Pong was a highly recruited guard from Davao. La Salle and Ateneo really pursued him. But Coach Jude Roque and Coach Nash Racela convinced him to play for San Beda. They even made a presentation for him - about what his role will be, the support, the school, the Bedan community, his future, etc. (I even have a copy of that presentation courtesy of Coach Jude).

So, with or without Ekwe, Pong is as good as advertised.

In my opinion, I believe he Chose San Beda over Ateneo and La Salle because:

1.) Coach Nash Racela (Former Red Lions coach) was the first one to recruit and convinced him to play two years ago.

2.)He had a bigger role in San Beda because the Red Lions needed a player like Pong, you see, Ateneo already had their veterans (Kramer, Escalona, Intal, Tiu)all lined up and I don't think he's gonna have quality minutes.

3.)He had a greater sense of belongingness, that is according to him from an
interview.

It must have been a hell of a presentation. He chose San Beda over Ateneo and La Salle. No offense meant.

Prof, Kirk is right with regard to numbers two and three, i.e., bigger role and sense of Bedan camaraderie.

Coach Jude Roque made a simple yet very convincing presentation.Jude focused on the fact that Pong will have a bigger role in San Beda. (Note: This presentation was made before Sam Ekwe was discovered.)

Because Pong committed to play for San Beda, the team was very willing to let go off Ronnie Bughao who at that time expressed his desire to leave and transfer to another school where his talents will be appreciated more.

Ronnie Bughao is more athletic and skilled than Pong. But Pong's real asset is his intelligence and solid decision making. While Ronnie Bughao would play brilliantly for 3 quarters, he'd invariably commit crucial lapses in the critical stages of the game. Ronnie wilts under pressure while Pong's mental toughness is unwavering. Ronnie is a superb athlete but he is not a leader. Pong is a natural leader. That's what Coach Nash and Jude saw in Pong when they discovered him while playing for Holy Cross of Davao.

It must have been a hell of a presentation. He chose San Beda over Ateneo and La Salle. No offense meant.

If Escobal had a drop of liking to be an Atenean, duon pa lang sa Davao dapat
naging Atenista na yan.

As for becoming a LaSallite, knowing more about the kid's character this past 3 semesters he has been here in Manila, I think he would prefer a "small community atmosphere where he will easily feel at home".

Yes, some kids just want "to be at home, even when thay are actually far away from home".

Let's admit it, camaraderie among "small campus schools" is more personal and strong as against bigger schools. There is still a strong appeal to that among kids from the province, even from a place called Davao.

*okay*

--yes he is such a smart guy, speaks good english kc filipino nya is bad(hehehe, hi my friend)... one of the few athletes i know na down to earth sobra, makes his studies a number 1 priority, sarap maging classmate kc nakaka challenge lalo na sa discussions, sarap kontrahin, hehehe, and mabait pa, totoong tao walang kaplastikan at arte sa katawan, there are so many good things one can say about this guy, i know for sure he is gonna be sucessful with whatever path he is gonna take.....

***** sino ba si thermodynamics dito, he is spreading nasty rumors that my friend pong is "homo", whoever you are stop the crap, it isnt true, and even if it were true, rules doesnt say u cant play ball if ur gay.. pero honestly he isnt... ur just envious, or a desperate fan wanting to be noticed....basta andaming nasty rumors galing sa kanya..
