How are Filipinos treated in other countries? Is there discrimation? How do foreigners react the first time they find out you're Filipino?

their reaction? surprised. for some odd reason, i'm rarely taken for a filipino. "oh, i thought you were from somewhere else...". and it's odd because i think i look very filipino. maybe it's because some operate under those labels and misconceptions that SoulfulHunk has cited. whatever! anyway, they don't treat me differently afterwards so it's no big deal.:)

I'm not ashamed of being Filipino but sometimes, some of the (younger) girls here give Filipinos a bad name. I don't know if you guys have ever heard of Import Carshows but most of the carshow "models" in the scene are pinays desperate for attention. They present themselves like sl*tty prostitutes with their mini skirts, blond hair and (funny) *sexy* poses. Some of them even allow anyone to 'feel' on them and they think it's all good.
I really don't know what's going through these girls' heads. Don't they realize they're demeaning themselves by doing that? They're letting guys treat them like objects. *sigh* It's no wonder Filipino women are looked down upon sometimes. If any of you want to see exactly what I'm talking about, just check out these sites:

Those people who think like that are obviously ignorants and they don`t know anything about the Philippines. If anyone says anything like that to me. My first question is, have you been in the philippines? if "it" says no. I will say "you don`t know anything then you ignorant b...rd so shut up!!
Anyway, decent people never think like that. I have been in different places and most people I met were nice and friendly. I think we have more ignorant people in our own country than abroad. This is base in my experience.

They are not ignorant. They are just saying the truth. I've been to several countries and I've been hearing the same things about the Filipinas: prostitutes, domestic helpers, prostitutes, domestic helpers, domestic helpers, prostitutes, prostitutes...
Who would think that a country like Bonaire, an unknown country in the Carribean, has imported Filipina exotic dancers?

Filipinas are more known for being mail-order brides than anything. They have even used that as a joke in the sitcom "Frasier" and in various late-night talkshows....It's sad how some foreigners think that way..:(

Driving home from Saint-Ouen, we saw one just beside the road waiting at past 11 in the morning. What is the difference between a white prostitute from a brown one? Has anyone tried browsing some sites for white prostitution?
Prostitution is universal, whether they are imported, mailed, or whathaveyou's, the essence is the same. It is the oldest existing job in the world. True, Filipinos are already in the books, but so are the other countries of asia. The thing is what they see is not only of Filipinos, but of ASIA as well, and not see the ones in their backyards, like the one we saw working as early as 11am. A part of Europe is also known for mail-order brides just to get out of their country.
It is a part of society everywhere, as long as there is a TARGET MARKET: MEN, to consume this business, it will exist around the world, so are the people who market them.
And the more one have been around to places, the more one should be open-minded. Our reputation have been tainted, true, but one need not generalize. There is a lot of wonderful things in the spaces around that black spot of Filipino reputation. Open-minded people do not focus only on this black spot because afterall, we are not seized by our color or race, or the numbers that we comprise, but as the person that we really are.

This foreign Talk is cheap.......Sticks n stones...blah blah. I reckon its a filipino plot to take over the world.......And its working!!
Filipinos are the second largest foreign community in the U.S.A. They are everywhere. A filipina prostitute almost got her son into the British house of lords for crying out loud!!
If the government cant supply a decent education and social services for everyone then of course the people will turn to plan B,,,,,,,,,,,and good luck to them .If that upsets some of the middle class set then.............. THATS TOUGH!! Nuff said.

Here in Sydney Australia, the younger Filipino's are quite admired. I don't fully understand it though. The Filo's (slang here for Pinoy's) try to be black, while the whites try to act Filo. As for the older Filipino women, the ignorant men often see them as lowly, uneducated women, not deserving of respect.
The image of Filipino's however is often stereotypical - a result of the number of women who must resort to lives as OCW/DH, mail-order brides to DOM's, and cheap beer garden girls.
As for the true image that should be portaryed by Filipino's here in Australia - a large number of us are educated, respectable and speakletter-perfect English!

They are saying the truth about what? that all filipinas are prostitutes and domestic helpers? well in my point of view anyone who thinks that someone is this and that because of the country they come from are ignorant. Of course there are people that give us a bad name but that is a problem created by the society we live in. Poverty will always make desperate people take desperate measures.
Yes, maybe we have a lot of migrating filipina which are from that background but not all. I have been living here in UK for 12 years now and I`ve been to different countries too, mostly Europe.I never have encountered anyone with that kind of attitude. I think we filipinos are the one who has that kind of perceptions to other filipinos. Some of my filipino friends are one of them. I give you an example, when we see other filipina with a foreigner they make comments like oooh another prostite. When I go out with my other foreign friends they never make a comment like that, they don`t even notice it to tell you the truth. I think we are the one who make a big deal of it!!
Here in the UK filipino are most known to be nurses. I have often been asked if I am one. Also being a domestic helper here is not a bad job at all. Some of them earn more money than people that works in the office. A domestic helper is not a big deal really. In the philippines if you are a domestic helper you are lowest of the low but not so in this country. I am not defending us filipina because theres nothing wrong with us. I am defending the accusations that foreigners brand filipinos with the same brush. At the end of the day we filipinos are guilty of putting ourselves down. ]§oulfulHunk, don`t be paranoid be positive!!!

In Canada it's not too discriminatory, at least in my experience. If you show that you're educated, and proper just like we are back home(well, at times), you really can't tarnish the reputation of "flips" (canadian for filipino). Pero naasar ako sa mga pinoy dito na nagiging blond nalang bigla. Pa dye-dye pa nang buhok hindi naman bagay! Atsaka yung mga feeling na pag lumalakad, may aso pang dala. It's quite wierd to see a filipino strutting along with his / her dog in the street. Eh sa pilipinas, kung di kinakain ang aso, humahabol sa mga lumalakad sa kalye. But seriously, I still think there's that rather negative reputation of filipinos, but it's not as pronounced. Ang dami kasing culture dito, the atmosphere is a little more relaxed.

Here in France, eventhough I haven't had a lot of time to care and survey the people's reactions around about my nationality, nobody seems to care likewise. Europe is already multi-cultural. People are from everywhere. And why would you care so much about what people say about you with such a flimsy evidence of our country's reputation?! Nobody knows better, but a lot knows nothing about the real world. Just know who you are, live and let live.

Err... I don't know why *certain* people here are taking things so personally.. It's as if we were talking about YOU, which obviously we aren't. I'm sure everyone knows the negative stereotypes don't pertain to ALL Filipinos ..but the topic did call for perceptions of Filipinos in other countries so don't be mad if not all perceptions are good. If we were to say that foreigners look at all Filipinos oh-so-admirably, that would be SUGARCOATING things.
Some people may have been deceived, thinking everything's all good, but based from my OWN experience, perceptions of Filipinos have not been so pleasant... This is from stuff I've seen on American television, comments I've personally heard from foreigners and stuff my friends have told me.
Mind you, it's not like I'm preoccupied 24/7 over those negative perceptions of Filipinas because I do have my own life to worry about. All I'm doing here is merely exposing the truth about import "models" who aren't exactly helping the image of Filipinas much..

gumacanian I wanted to enlighten people about the kind of image some Filipino girls here in California are portraying. You thought they were "imported" strippers, huh? Not at all. Those girls are Import Carshow Models, girls (who are mostly Filipino) who volunteer to pose almost half nude next to fixed up import cars. Most of these girls don't even get paid..they just want attention. Again, I just wanted to expose this ugly, demeaning world of Import carshows, which you guys probably never even heard of before.

White women,Black women and now Filipina women..So what!!
They may be doing it for nothing in the short term but they`ll get paid somewhere along the line....A bit like the Hollywood casting couch.
I think I`ve tuned into your chain of thought but with respect ,you seem a little paranoid.

that i probably don't look like:
a. a prostitute (albeit a "beautiful" one)
b. a domestic helper (nanny and chamber maids are also popular choices)
c. a mail-order bride
d. an Import Carshow "model"
gee. that's reassuring.
i'd LOVE to say that these stereotypes are baseless. but we all know they're not. so why deny them?
when i take JAL from tokyo to manila and vise-versa, i'm surrounded by japanese-speaking, blonde filipinas wearing too much make-up and too little clothes with their japanese kids in tow and i think to myself: japayuki.
at an early moring mass the other day, a filipina sat two rows in front of me. normally, i wouldn't give notice except she took off her coat to reveal a black tank top underneath, complete with protruding nipples, thank you! (it's fall and this IS chilly canada.) i don't have a problem if that's what she calls her "sunday best attire" but she could at least have kept her coat on in church. talk about indecent exposure...
i'm not happy with the status quo. and i don't like judging other filipinas either. but with the way some filipinas conduct themselves, i'd just as soon not be classified like the rest.

i think one of the reasons why Filipinos are held in such low regard in other countries is because of the fact that even our fellow Filipinos who live in other nations think so lowly of us. we had relatives over from the states and they had their twenty-ish children sew their money inside their socks because they believed that they'd be robbed right after they went down the plane. i think they actually believed that we still lived in nipa huts and wore bahag here in metro manila. imagine their surprise when my bro took my uncle to a country club in south luzon. he was astounded by the grandeur and beauty of the course and the structures but then, he just brushed it off, saying these sort of clubs were probably just built for visiting Filipinos from overseas.
i'm actually on the verge of thinking that they want to believe that the Philippines is so backward because they want to believe that they're better off living overseas. living abroad isn't easy and i guess what kept them on for so long was the fact that they actually thought that it was better there than here, actually in a lot of ways-- living in another country must be better but it doesn't beat living in your own country since our families are here...

Amen to that. Filipinos drink even if there's no specific occasion. As for Europeans, since the climate's colder there, it's more "necessary" for them to drink, right?
What the hell am I talking about? Oh yeah... drinking. While Europeans consume more in a daily basis compared to Filipinos (refer to what I mentioned earlier), Filipinos drink more in a given "session". Gets?

You guys have vastly different experiences than I have. First of all, the only problem that my mom, sis, and I have had is being confused with a mexican or a chinese. I guess we fall into a category in which we look like either one but I don't see the similarities. However, most people that I run into are very accepting and it is rare that I run into someone who is repulsed because of my skin. One of my closest friends once told me that when she first me, she thought I was an over tanned white boy. Another not so big problem is that a lot of people don't know where the Philippines is. My english teacher keeps on thinking it's in South America. To be honest I kind of have fun with the confusion that I put on others.

Dood..you feel me? I mean I didn't know how bad the situation was until I attended an import carshow myself. Posing next to a car one thing but letting guys touch you and getting all freaky/nasty with other girls in public is a whole diffy story!
The sad thing is a lot of the girls I saw doing the "attention grabbing" stuff were young..some looked like they were only 15-16 years old. I wonder if their parents even know what their children are doing behind their backs. Blah..whatever....

This view can certainly be taken by individuals who value the physical appearance of a person...
I must admit...pinoy teens look quite different here as supposed to my friends back home in the Philippines...(especially in schools) so, i really can't blame myself for not being able to "hang around" with them...
People at school were surprised when they found out i was a Filipino...the common question asked would be.."why do you look/act so differently?" I'm not saying that i look better than anyone, its just the perception of others..
Sad to say that Filipinos(teen) that migrate or grew up here in the States are most commonly stereotyped as "feeling amboy","anak ng maid na nag-migrate", "galing probinsya"..etc.... and its also very unfortunate to see fellow Filipinos discriminate other Filipinos
about the question on being treated...well, everything seems to run smoothly ..no accounts/acts of discrimination whatsoever....at least not to me...

Pinoys are generally regarded as smart and disciplined. Cal Irvine has a high percentage of Pinoys. There was a study conducted in the States saying that Pinoy households have one of the highest income averages in the country even more than Whites. Is it because Filipinos work hard and everyone works in the Family. I'm an immigrant and I don't take the backseat to anyone regardless of race and ethnicity. It all starts with yourself our Filipino background is a definite asset we should be proud of it.

foreigner's perception about filipinos differs. if u give them the impression that ur shy to say your nationality then..they'll return that impression to you....
say it with full confidence..then, they'll respect you for what you are!!!

people don't even know that i'm filipino, they think that i am chinese or some kind of mix. it was frustrating at first but now i don't care because it's not my appearance that matters but it is my values and beliefs that count the most. i haven't been treated any differently because i am filipino and i live in a community that is about ten percent filipinos and the rest is white.

@Tipi: Yeah, some places are OK I guess... HKG isn't "Pinoy-Friendly" at times. Just 2 wks ago, got rejected over the phone to view an apartment 'cause I mentioned that I was Pinoy and that I would turn my apartment into a dorm for overstaying Pinoys here!!
Forgiven though... Made a complain immediately to the Equal Opportunities Commission here and made a huge stink, demanded a written acknolwedgement of my complaint and expected an investigation and a full reply... Had to do something! Just can keep goin' on like this dude!

in some places in europe my friends and i would be mistaken for some other asian nationality. people would go "nihao, nihao" or "sayonara" or whatever.
pinoys also get mistaken for americans (???) because we speak such great english. hello, ano yon, do they expect us to be stupid or something?
on a more positive note, hanga sila sa talent ng mga pinoy, especially in music. talbog pa natin yung mga iba na buong buhay na nag-aaral sa music conservatory. we really have music in our soul. (incidentally, for proof, you guys might wanna check out another thread, sino ang pinakamagaling na university chorale sa pilipinas? in campus chat. you'll see news about pinoys sweeping major choral competitions in europe.)

Yeah, even here in HK, the real good bands and producers and musicians are Pinoy! Guess it's just in the blood. That's what I hear when I tell peeps here that I am Pinoy - they always say something about how Filipinos are really great singers or how we've got rhythm and just a general sense of Music! In the blood ;)

i basically revolve around a diverse crowd...my associates, peers and friends regard Filipinos as hard working, very cultured, fashionable and intelligent group of people. I am guilty of not associating myself with the 'ghetto-amboy' filipino teens/youngsters who thrive among the Filipino communities here in North America. They seem to be very 'crass' and trying hard to be a minority. I mean we are a minority pero over naman sila e...I for one am more comfortable with white kids since we like the same things.. i don't dig a lot of 'ghetto-black' fascinations(i.e. fashion, music, lingo,culture)..and there's a whole different mind set i guess..i basically get along with filipinos who grew up here who are more open-minded and laid back about their 'minority-ness' and of course, pinoys from manila.

You guys are right about Filipinos being regarded as talented performers! Of the very few Asian acts slowly breaking through the American music mainstream, almost all of them are Filipino! There's....
Kai..who became popular everywhere!
One Vo1ce..whose music was featured in the MTV movie Jailbait;
Forte..a singing group from Hawaii that set a record by winning this nationally broadcasted "Star Search" kind of show for about 8 consecutive weeks;
Jocelyn Enriquez..whose songs made it to the Billboard charts;
Billy Joe Crawford..who sang the Pokemon Theme Song
Premiere, Pinay, Buffy, Drop N' Harmony and of course, who could forget...
Lea Salonga!..no explanation needed! ;)
Actually, do you guys know of any other Asian performer/group slowly breaking through the mainstream? The only one I could think of is Coco Lee.
Note: To the people who have never heard of One Vo1ce, you guys should really check them out! Their album "Just The Beginning" is by far, my favorite cd ever! :D (Actually they went through several name changes...One Voice to Voice V to One Vo1ce. :)

One news station in California did an exclusive report here on fraudulent activities and they featured a Pinoy family who would fake deaths and collect insurance illegally here. When the FBI started investigating and was on to them they fled and went back home to Pinas.
Then the news station showed a clip of a video of the padre de familia of the insurance scam family getting sworn in as a MAYOR of some Philippine city...can you believe it.
I'm not saying this is the way people look at Filipinos but at the same time this certainly doesn't help the image.
There are many perceptions OR stereotypes about Filipinos.
Classify em as BAD and GOOD. I really don't want to elaborate on what those are because this thread has already have.
Education is the Key...Just hope that people who have discriminated against Filipinos don't stay ignorant and take the initiative to learn about the culture of other nationalities. Let's hope that they get past the stereotypes and the skin color and the physical features and look at YOU, a filipino or filipina, as an individual human being. HOPE and PRAY and BE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO OTHERS.

Ano ibig sabihin nang Amboy?
amboy - "American boy"....refering to someone who is born stateside, and "americanized" (not westernized)...for all i it means something good when someone calls you by that remark, but lately it means something degrading especially fil-ams
why such stereotypes, well i don't know who or how it started but to give a clear idea on that subject matter, filipinos (in Pinas) are offended when fil-ams who criticize on the Philippines with respect to culture, traits, politics, even the warm weather.....well as you can see, they (fil-ams) try to think filipinos as ignorant and "uncivilized" in some respect.....for filipinos, they respect such criticism because most filipinos believe that fil-ams don't know what they are talking about.... well i can agree to that, especially when news, media, and tv do most of the time give unaccurate and sometimes really....really the wrong news about the Philippines,.. that is why fil-ams do give the wrong impression about the Philippines
i mean have ever tried watching TV Patrol? do you notice any inconsistencies the way things are presented? well, the truth is they censor or to be accurate, they edit any form of news presented to fil-ams.....geez talk unfair view.... and that is why you won't even understand what the hell the news would be all about.... and one thing when watching news, not all as in ALL of the news that you see we filipinos are threathened so much....especially the current situation,....well girl, it's not the end of the world... and the world does not revolve at erap.... so nothing to be worried about.... :)

Assalamu Alaikum Wen Barrakatu
May the peace and blessings of God be with You.
Bismillah ir Rahman Ir Rahim
In the name of God, most gracious, most merciful.
Greetings from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Here in the Kingdom, if the majority of a company's employees are Filipinos, it is a status symbol that the Company is a good and prosperous one.
Our Engineers, Technical and Creative people are highly looked up to in this part of the world.
Picture this scene, in line for a job interview are Indians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis etc for a Design Firm... In comes a Filipino. The Arab guy will wave his hand to make way for the Filipino to come directly to his desk to be interviewed, ahead of the others. The other nationalities will part like the red sea to make way for the Filipino "Moses"-who gets the job.
That's why if you're a Filipino here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, stand tall and walk with your head up high and greet every Filipino you see "Kamusta Kabayan!".
Ma assalama
Peace be with you.

A few years ago, an American approached me at a local dry cleaners asking if I am a Filipino, I said 'yes.' Next thing I know, the ******* was asking me if I came from Clark, Olongapo area, I hope you guys know where I'm going with this. That stupid ******** just assumed that I belong to the few (sorry to say this) Filipino prostitutes who got married to those Americans stationed at Clark Air Base.

It depends on where you are. But I guess since I've lived in Saudi Arabia for almost 5 years when I was growing up, Filipinas are known to be domestic helpers or so-called prostitues.
Here in the States, I haven't really gotten any discrimination.
There are good and bad perceptions of Pinoys from other cultures as well.

hmmm i've been into those what-are-you-&-where-are-you-from-situations...often mistaken as chinese, vietnamese(in which we really look almost the same), chinese from hongkong( duh!) , & am i adopted -because my family name is spanish...
yes, most people are surprised when they hear you speak english, anong akala nila sa aten mga ignorante, or yung mga minention nyong a little degrading earlier -chimays, mga taga probinsya) .. my gulay totoo nga yung sinabi nyo na most of them cant write well!
there's not much discrimination here in usa though, but i've heard of aussie's & europeans ....

...Actually, if you wanna go by stereotypes, I guess most Fil-Ams try to act hardcore or "Black"...I mean I grew up here in the US and all.. but I still don't get why pinoys wanna act "ghetto"...Some Fil-Ams even call each other n*gga or purposely say, "Who is you?" (when they really know it's supposed to be "Who are you") I think it's quite pathetic, to tell you the truth. (If they only knew....I have some African-American friends who CLOWN those pinoy wannabes.)
not to be judgemental or anything but in southern prince george's county in maryland(DC/Balt) we call people who act and dress like that FLIPNIGS. A lot of those kind of people live there. A lot not all. There are also decent folks there. For lack of a better word, I would say that fil-ams living in other parts of the dc,md,va area are more conventional. In montgomery county where I live it's not so bad.

To answer the question, personally fil ams are accepted. There are negative things like everything else but nothing really bad has happened because I'm a fil-am. I'm very accepted. I was all american in high school and a lot of my past girlfriends were white. feature wise, I look more latino, hawaiian because of my natural tan and I don't have chinky eyes, have a spanish last name. Im 5'11 250. I lift weights. Some people consider me big for a flip but that's ok. If and when negative things occur they did not concern me or I was not aware of it.

A friend of mine told me that when he was in high school he was discriminated by some black dudes. They called him chink, chinaboy and other racial slurs. They were just jealous of what he could do and because he was a smart guy. He happened to be in a predominantly black school close to the inner city.
The US is a big country and there are so many filipinos here so they experience different things in different places. I guess we have to take it with a grain of salt and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Another friend told a story of how a black dude picked on him and my friend later called up some of his friends and beat the living crap out of this guy. It helps that some of his filipino friends were athletes and some were serious martial artists. Word got around and they were challenged but they beat up everybody until they became very feared. One boy was even hospitalized because he was seriously hurt. No one pressed charges because the black kid was jumped at night and could not see who did that to him. My friend's friend even exclaimed "if you mess with us you die!!" Not exactly the best way to go about things but it got the message across.
Where was I when all this excitement was going on?? I did not know my friend yet and missed out on all the fun. In college, my fil am classmate and his dormates half of them flip and half black and white kicked the $h1t out of this white redneck cause he picked on the filipino. I think they even broke his ribs. No one messes with us.
Note: i'm a law abiding citizen who votes and pays taxes. I contribute my time every thanksgiving helping the homeless, but if anybody messes with us and all fails then we take matters in our own hands and they will sleep with the fishes.
