jru held ust to just two free throws in the payoff period to pull off the biggest upset no thanks to the heavy bombers' physcial plays that blew the top of the tigers and their chance in the advance-or-go-home collegiate champions league...
the tigers were in control of the game building several double digit leads when jojo duncil had an altercation with a jru heavy bomber late in the second quarter that triggered the fracas sending jun dizon and mel gile early to the locker room...
the biggest blow came in before halftime when jervy cruz was called for consecutive unsportsmanlike fouls joining dizon and gile in the sidelines for the rest of the game...
jojo duncil tried to carry the load for ust but jru kept on coming back with mark caguco's three consecutive triples in one stretch...
lo and behold, from a 51-61 ust lead, the heavy bombers slowly but surely tied the game with under four minutes to play.. dylan ababou's two free throws put ust on top again, 63-61 but jru scored the last four points while ust bungled two fastbreak plays and all their perimeter attempts either rimmed out or went short until the final buzzer...
ust just couldn't shoot.. even duncil's shots were not falling when they needed them most in an awry picture reminiscent of jc intal's flubbed lay-ups in the uaap finals game 3...
jru caught ust napping... had the referees controlled the game right from the start, ust would have advance with a complete roster... the refs should have talked and huddled the team captains to cool both teams the 3 officials just huddled themselves infront the table of the tv panel and talked with another referee and a ccl official (i suppose since he was in civilian clothes)...
but i admire my fellow thomasians for still singing the ust hymn after the buzzer and some even lined-up for photo ops with the uaap champs...
coach pido was even all smiles when he congratulated the jru coaching staff led by the ecstatic ariel vanguardia, who was in hot water for leading the infamous talk 'n text's shoot-in-red bull-basket acouple of years back in a game he pinch-hit for joel banal in the phone pals bench...
but the cold reality is that ust lost. period. there will no dream catfight with the san beda red lions nor a rematch with the ateneo blue eagles!

Tigers bomb bid in Champs League
The Philippine Star 10/10/2006
Mark Cagoco knocked in two pressure-packed charities in the last 1:56 then Jose Rizal University held on to score a stunning 65-63 upset win over newly-crowned UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas in the Collegiate Champions League at the UST gym.
The Heavy Bombers held the Tigers scoreless while scoring 13 points in the first 6:22 of the payoff period to seize control, 63-61, on a basket by JM Wilson with less than four minutes left en route to the biggest reversal posted in the knockout tournament among the top 16 schools in the land.
Dylan Ababou sank two free throws to tie the count at 63-all, 3:22 to go in the contest, before Cagoco came through with his endgame heroics at the stripe to the disappointment of a big UST crowd.
It was indeed a sorry setback for the Tigers, who only last week essayed one of most stirring victories in the UAAP by upending the fancied Ateneo Eagles, 2-1, in the best of three series.
"The boys’ big fighting heart carried us through," said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia in Filipino. "Like what I’ve said before the game, we’re the underdogs here but we’ll be there fighting."
Save for a brief commotion in the second period, the Tigers were in control of the first half.
Tigers June Dizon and Mel Gile were thrown out for entering the court after Marvin Hayes of JRU committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Jojo Duncil, 7:34 before halftime. Duncil also got a technical foul for second motion.
But the Tigers quickly regained their composure and posted several double-digit leads, the biggest at 37-23 after back-to-back hits by Jervy Cruz.
The victory thus sent JRU, a wildcard entry from the NCAA, to a quarterfinal match with Letran.
Earlier, University of Visayas turned back seventh-seeded Adamson, 70-67, to advance to the quarters.
Von Lanete sank two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to help secure the victory for the Green Lancers, ranked 10 in a field of 16.
"We came here to win," said UV coach and ex-pro Elmer "Boy" Cabahug. "We studied their moves in the first half then we attacked them in the last two quarters."
The Green Lancers will next meet the winner between NCAA champions San Beda College Red Lions and the National University Bulldogs.
Akad, who also pushed their lead to 68-65 with 1:18 to play, led the many-time CESAFI champion with 13 points and nine rebounds.
"Magandang panalo sa amin ‘to dahil dapat ‘yung mga magagaling nila sa amin naglalaro," said UV assistant coach Al Solis, referring to Bono, Cabahug and Roel Hugnatan.
Jay Rodriguez and Dino Berame, the MVP contenders of the Green Lancers in their league, combined for 20 points and 17 rebounds.
Berame, a talented 6-foot-7 slotman, also had three shot blocks, including one against Bono in the final minute.
"Ang bentahe namin sa kanila (Falcons) is ‘yung bilis namin. Pati kasi sentro namin nakakatakbo," noted Solis.
The Green Lancers had four more fastbreak points than the Falcons, 8-4, and five more points off turnovers, 10-5. They also picked up four more steals, 7-3.

Firstly, congrats to JRU for playing such a nice game. They deserved to win.
Ikaw naman, obvious ang inggit mo for not belonging to a UAAP member school. Pure hype ang UAAP? That's because there are lots of things to hype about in the UAAP, foremost of which are its member schools.
I just hope JRU's win over UST will serve as an impetus for JRU to be more determined than ever. If they managed to win over the 19-time UAAP men's basketball champion, surely they can replicate the feat against, uh, how should I put it, lesser teams, particularly their NCAA counterparts.
In the meantime, our basketball players are ready to take their well-deserved rest. Champions after all, need to take a break.

What's to be jealous about? Your league is comparable to today's political system? Full of crap, lies, deceit, pirated players from our league, corrupt school admin, rigged game results.. the list doesn't end there. That's more than enough reason why a lot refuses to join that rubbish league of yours. Don't compare ours with yours because yours is not worth comparing with any respectable league. If comparing is your purpose then i suggest that you start by checking the dumpster you'll definitely find it there.

reminder lang this thread doesn't mean to harm UST or the UAAP. we should avoid bashing each other....besides whatever "issues" UAAP have or had should be discussed in a seperate forum to be able to address it properly. both teams should be congratulated for playing it all.
basketball is a universal game, we rather use it as a tool for peace.

Too late celtic. This has degenarated to name-calling and bashing thread.
But, anyway, I truly feel happy for your team. And for you na rin kasi you're one of the few and staunch JRU supporter. I always liked JRU because of Philip Cezar and, later, because of Vergel Meneses.
UST never took the game lightly. And based from what I heard, they were in it up to the very end. But JRU's defense prevailed daw. MonL remarked about JRU's defense and I'm sure they have a lot to do with UST going zero out of 265,374. Malas will probably give you 0-8 but 0-18 (or is it 20)?
I hope this win propels JRU to regain some, if not all of it's former lofty standings.
If only we can go back to discussing the merits of the game :(

For the record Ateneo and De La Salle left the NCAA because of their personal reasons and that's not the issue here.
In your point of view NCAA will play second fiddle to the UAAP, to others they may see it differently. If you judge the last UAAP-NCAA All Stars, NC have an edge. If Espinas, Aban and Bautista were around, the game should be more exciting, specially if Coach Koy Banal shows up and call the shots. Again you might be viewed differently.
Now if you want to discuss this further, let's start another thread and we can exchange opinions.... in a nice way.

I watched the game last Saturday sa Rizal. Based on what I saw, mukhang maganda ang chances ng Heavy Bombers for season 83. Maganda ang orchestration nila at they have good teamwork plus a very competent head coach in Ariel Vanguardia and his chief asst. Tino Pinat. The game was very exciting at highy physical. The presence of cheerers with the very loud drums of both camps added color and excitement sa game. What's noticeable after the game was the very tight hug between Alas and Vanguardia. Talagang they remain good friends kahit na different team na ang hawak ni Ariel. Plus ang ganda ng tawanan ng mga players ng Knights at Bombers after the game. I was very happy to see these guys congratulating each other after a physical game. In the MIT vs Ateneo game naman, grabe ang shooting ng Cardinals in particular si Sumalinog, first half pa lang he converted four 3 pt shots. Medyo nagalit si Horacio kay Mazo during one instance sa 1st quarter which prompted him to shout, Bakit? Takot ka kay Intal? Pero in the end the better team won. Credit must be given to the cheerers of JRU, Letran, and Mapua for there presence. By the way, nanuod din si ex Sen. John Osmeña. CCL founder Joe Lipa was also there.

GAMES TOMORROW (Rizal Memorial Coliseum)
1 p.m. -- UE vs Mapua
3 p.m. -- San Beda vs JRU
THE NCAA is making a case for itself as the better varsity league, as three of its teams survived a series of knockout matches to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.
Newly crowned NCAA champion San Beda College Lions, the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals and the Jose Rizal University Bombers will vie for a championship slot tomorrow.
The UAAP on the other hand, has seen its top two teams this season bow out of contention from the national championship. Left to carry the UAAP flag in the Final Four are the University of the East Warriors.
The eighth-ranked Cardinals ousted the top-seeded Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, 70-66, last Saturday to become one of the surprise semifinalists in the knockout-style tournament that pits the top 16 varsity squads in the country.
A wildcard entry, the Bombers also stunned UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas Tigers, before disposing NCAA heavyweight Letran College Knights.
“We’re used to the physical game in the NCAA,” said coach Ariel Vanguardia after the Bombers humbled the Tigers, 65-63, in the first round. “I think they weren’t able to adjust. Our team really wanted to win. We’ve been practicing. We haven’t taken a vacation.”
UE coach Dindo Pumaren, though, said the early exit of UAAP teams hardly indicates that the league has lesser talent.
The tournament, he noted, started just days after the UAAP wrapped up its basketball season.
“The timing was a factor,” said Pumaren. “Most of the teams are still drained. Like UST, they’re still overwhelmed after winning the championship.”
UE will battle Mapua at 1 p.m., while San Beda will take on JRU at 3 p.m. in the semifinal duels tomorrow at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

^ UST is the best team in UAAP last season. Even if they lost to JRU on the Champions League, they are still heralded as the UAAP Season 69 champions. Their lost to JRU doesn't take away their distinction as champs, even if the JRU win had been a blowout. JRU won because they are ALSO a great team, and both teams gave a good fight. In basketball, anything can happen.
I'm not from UST. I reacted like these because I hate immature remarks wherein they imply that a high-ranking team must be ashamed of their loss. Honor JRU for their win, but also honor UST as UAAP Season 69 champs. Give everybody the respect they deserve.
Peace. :)

Sheesh, I bet you're going to dwell upon this till your last breath. Pity, pity, pity.
Too bad your "rivalry" with Ateneo won't push through. The social climbing Bedans must be sorely disappointed.
In the meantime, perhaps you should wait for another 28 years (OR MORE depending on your school's ability to recruit imports) for the possibility of a revival of your "rivalry" with Ateneo to materialize.
Until such time comes (IF ever it does), your team must simply content itself with nothing but wishes.

Masasabi klo na ang performance ng JRU in this years champion's league ay parang ang performance ng George Mason University sa NCAA National Championship sa US, they have been seeded 11'th of the sweet sixteen but they upsetted top seeded Wichita St. Univesity and the University of Michigan, NOrth Caolina and Connecticut and reached the final four only to be downed by the ever powerful Florida Gators who by the way is also one of the underdogs defeating the top seeded Villanova Wildcats.
At the end of the day we all want a Cinderella ending to our our beloved alma matters... everyone in this league is a champion in their own rights. UST will always be UST and Heck they have 400 yrs to prove it, JRU will always be JRU...
To UST i have always loved the under dogs in whatever competition, your school being dubbed as one of the greatest ended up to be one of the underdogs in the UAAP finals, what makes an underdog special is their drive to win and since there is no pressure to win they just play for the love of the game, even if no one is watching.
To JRU, same thing, but since we are in the same league my allegiances is unquestionable. Congrats, you are shall we say the Philippine's George Mason, Upsetting top seeded UST and Letran, Making San Beda bleed. See you in season 83's final four.

how can you say pinagtitira? sinahod ba siya? ginamitan ba siya ng closed fist? did players of JRU poked him in the eye? his problem is his temper, i've seen his moves without the ball againts Ateneo and UE and his waterloo is pagiging pikon. i have nothing againts Jervy, but if he wants to improve his game on the next level he should control his patience.
basketball is a physical sport, you might be bumped while taking a shot or during rebound and all the unexpected might happened. what disturbs me is your term "goons" how do you define goons? wala kaming player na nasuspinde dahil maduming maglaro. our players did not retaliate during a scuffle w/ UST and besides how can JRU provoke or start something that may turn ugly during the game inside the UST gym? it's a common sense. kung goons ang players malamang yung Detroit Pistons noong panahon ni Isisah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer & Dennis Rodman ang tawag eh mamatay tao or killers? nakita ko kasi kung paano nila pahirapan si Michael Jordan. the good thing Jordan didn't react & lost his cool, he just played and led the Bulls to the finals and eventually won the champioship.

Una, magiging useless na sila (although mejo mababa nga ang usage nila to begin with :D).

Regardless kung homecourt advantage ka or visiting team, unsportsmanlike fouls are a no-no. :D

Nabanggit din sa gameface.ph na PBL refs daw ang mga tumatawag so malamang mas sanay sa mga contact ang refs. Sa UAAP kasi halos madikit lang pito na.

I just thought Neil reached your batch. Neil played guard in training team but played forward for Pharmacy. If my memory serves me right Cobar handled the women's team of Pharmacy then. Peter Torres nga ba was handling football then? One booter that I remember in the late 80's was Eric Fernandez. That was the time when UST's football team were lead by 2 middle eastern guys.
