if I remember correctly a brazilian born player named "robson bornancin" played for the maroons, *** friend ko sa UP sabi pa eh sa international center pa *** nakatira un *** parang dorm ng mga foreign students sa UP. They didn't win a championship nun time na yun pero I guess pag nanalo yung UP nun eh di issue yan kase import rin si Bornancin. Kung di siguro nanalo SBC baka di ito issue hehehehe

Whats wrong with Sam Ekwe playing for San Beda College? He is a student at SBC, that means he can play for the NCAA. In the US NCAA, foreigners can play as long as they are studying in the same school they are playing for.

Now this is an example of a stupid comment... Eventhough Bornancin stayed all his life here in the Philippines, the fact is, he is still a Brazilian. Just a little research will reveal this.

But only Samuel E. was able to get a horde of admiring fans.

We have succeeded this year, but I won't be too sure to say that we'll clinch it again for the next three years. Posting things like that will only give others the impression that we are braggarts etc etc.

Well, yes..I accept the fact that:

1. the Championship would be sweeter if it had an All Pinoy line-up. However, I am in no way, bellitling the Championship we had this year. It was a team effort, and not an all-Ekwe show. I love Ekwe by the way, he is such a humble person, I hope people can make an example out of him.

2. we didn't cheat anybody. We won the Championship fair and square. The NCAA rule allowing one foreigner to play (as long as he is a student of the School) did not apply to San Beda alone, it was applicable to all NCAA member schools.

3. the San Beda Community is proud of what it has achieved and we believe that it would not be possible without the efforts of Coach Koy, the Red Lions and the Red Army and God's blessing.

4. some Bedans can be a bit anxious and assuming due to the Championship win and some people see them as being braggarts...but actually, they are just proud to be Bedans, and their school Spirit is high....just like me...

5. I am offended with some of dlurker's posts and sense a bitterness on them.

6. I am a Bedan, and will always be proud of it. However, I also stand for the truth kaya "kung mali....mali."

Surprisingly, most people zero-in on Sam as the main reason why SBC would remain as a strong contender for the coming years. Admittedly, he is a force inside the paint and he won't win the ROY-MVP award for just sitting on his butt. However, he will only play two (2) more years tops.

What other schools failed to notice is that a formidable basketball program has been finally established by the alumni of SBC. This will fuel the title bid of SBC for decades.

So instead of whining and droning over Sam, people like d'lurker should instead rally his school to beef up its line-up and probably come-up with a basketball program of some sort. Lastly, try to live with the fact that the San Beda Red Lions are the 82nd Season Champions and they are no longer the cellar dwellers of the NCAA.

San Beda has raised the bar several notches higher. Can the other schools catch up? That is the challenge so get busy!

I don't know if the threadstarter, ALeancelo, is indeed a Bedan (he didn't even bother to reply to the posts in here anyway...???), but I guess if he is, I think we need to carefully think before posting anything here because it might put San Beda in hot water.

We have succeeded this year, but I won't be too sure to say that we'll clinch it again for the next three years. Posting things like that will only give others the impression that we are braggarts etc etc.

Let us just be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

If we Bedans would only take time to notice how our Red Lions showed their attitude on court, we should know that they are the ones whom we should follow. They have showed humbleness all throughout the 82nd NCAA season games. Did we ever see Sam Ekwe staring down at his opponents each time he makes a block or a dunk? Did we ever see Yousif Aljamal displaying crazy antics each time he saved our team during crunch time? Did we see Pong Escobal or Alex Angeles brag each time they made 3-point shots?

NEVER.

The Red Lions are showing us how to be humble. I have to agree that during NCAA games a lot of fellow Bedans were showing arrogance. Not to mention that our gallery kept chanting that rotten jeer.

Please, to my fellow Bedans, let us be humble. Let us not let our Championship victory this year get into our head. We won it this season but next season is a start of another campaign. It's another story.

People will expect us to win and even dominate but let us just take it one game at a time. Let us not assume that we will be victorious for another 2 or 3 straight years. That would be a great feat but let us be reminded that every season is a struggle. A struggle to win, a struggle to be on top.

*Sam Ekwe wasn't imported by the Red Lions. As said by a fellow Bedan, he wasn't even scouted or anything. Why would we import someone who doesn't even play basketball? Someone who has seen more Soccer balls than a basketball in his life? I've seen Ekwe eversince he first came into San Beda.The first time I saw him play in St. Placid's Gym, I said to myself," What a terrible bust this guy is." I was very prejudiced. I didn't know Sam's whole story at all that time. I thought that he just came to San Beda just to play basketball but it was evident that he didn't even knew how to play basketball.


He kept fumbling the ball. He didn't know how to post up and each time he was in the shaded area, he was wistled for a 3-second violation most of the time.

To sum it up, he wasn't a basketball player. I compared him to Hanamichi Sakuragi. I hoped that in one year's time, he'd learn how to play basketball. That he'd learn the basics.

Sam Ekwe has hugely improved his basketball skills and is still improving. He is definitely ONE of the cornerstones of the Red Lions' bid for the 83rd Season's championship next year.

People have to realize that Sam Ekwe is not the only reason that we became champions this season, rather he was just ONE of the reasons why we won. If you would look at the stats of our starting lineup this season, the points statistics has been evenly distributed.


LEt's not put too much weight on Sam's shoulders. He is not and will not be the only reason that we won and will win.

following your line of thought that the National collegiate athletics association is made for the development and success of young and local college players we have to understand that there are many ways of where we can achieve it... and beleive it or not, the ways this can be achieved is sometimes going to be deemed as biased.

where can we attain success and development?

1.) giving the players vitamins and supplements, it is by giving them this materials wherein they can improve the distribution of nutrients in their body and strengthen their growth, now we have to understand that not all schools and players can buy this merchandise, so in a way this would give the "richer" schools an unfair advantage because their players are healthier. So ergo if it is unfair then we should ban vitamins and supplements to level out the playing field?

2.) top caliber coaching staff. one must understand that not all institution can afford a top-caliber coaching staff to man their ranks. And we all know what a top-caliber ranked coach can bring to the table, their expirience and their know-how of the game, plus their mere presence is enough intimidation that not so good teams and unranked coaches might fold in the pressure. So ergo it is unfair and therefore we should ban top-caliber coaches from coaching in the ncaa?

3.) training equipments and materials. in order for them the players to improve their game they mut have the training materials and equipments so that it can build their muscle and strength, now not all institution can afford a gym, top of the line equiments and training mechanisms so it is unfair? so ergo we must ban training equipments that other schools cant afford because it is unfair.

4.) Recruitment is a vital part of the program, because in the collegiate rank the only way you can bring out the best is to bring out the most competitive and to find out which is more competitive than the othe, the scouts play along. now we must understand that not all scouts are funded to go to the provinces to look for blue chip players to play for their school so ergo we must ban recruiting in areas wherein others can't reach it?

5.) now we must raise the level of competitiveness of the game, that is why we have international players to play in the pba, pbl, nba and even in the US NCAA, because they understand that there is no such thing as a superior race, they understand that outside their country there is someone who is better, and if they find that someone they bring him to play for their school. they also understand that if they get all foreigners to play in their teams, our own players would stagnate, that is why there i regulation placed in recruiting them. now not all can afford to have a foreigner study in their school and not all teams can afford an import so therefore we must ban int'l players from playing in the local scene because it is unfair?

so where can we attain growth and development and where can we sustain the growth? I think the answer is too obvious. if you can't catch up with the competition, find your own way.

Anyway, I concede that our Red Lions is indeed a powerhouse team but we shouldn't not let that get into our heads. It's just a cycle. We can't always be on top every season. ONe day we're on top, the next our RL will be regrouping again. Pero hopefully, when the time comes that we have to step down, it won't take us 28 more years to regroup. hahaha

Through the entire 80s, Letran supporters were considered the most violent and undisciplined. But in the past 4 or 5 years, Letran was also the school that took one of the more significant steps in helping the NCAA in re-establishing a positive image to the general public.

To date it is the only member school that organize and provide means for their grade school studenst to come to the games.

Napakalaking bagay yan para mapabuti ang impression ng general public sa liga.

I have a first hand experience with this. My kids and pamangkins have all asked to be brought to the games. This, after seeing those young Letranites being focused on TV.

Masaya tignan ang mga bata sa games and they give a positive dimension and fresh image to the "non-aligned viewers".

On this, Letran should be given credit.
