Is this the first time that a champion NCAA team has a foreign player?
When was the last time that the league MVP was not a Filipino?
When was the last time that the league ROY was not a Filipino?
Will other schools start recruiting foreign players/students to duplicate this year's champion?
Just wondering.

on your first question, i believe this isn't the first time that a champion team has a foreign player.. just recently pep moore of SSC won an ncaa championship. i just am not sure about the early 90s..

The NCAA was founded before the WW2, a time when there were still no international schools and children of expatriates were enrolled at these all-boys school.
If the threadstarter is resourcefull enough, he/she will find out that there were many champion teams then with "foreign players" in their lineups.
But that's a non-issue to begin with. The NCAA is a school league. For as long as the foreign player is a regular student, then he has every right to play for his school.
As for the individual awards, these is a contemporary practice. As to whether a foreign student has actually become a recipient is also a non-issue. Though for trivia, it is a valid question.

dapat di na *** payagan yung mga foreign players maglaro kasi unfair naman sa ibang school pure pinoy .. para sa kin mas desrving pa rin yung 2nd place, opinyon ko *** at wag na sana gayahin ng ibang school ..

case in point: "pure" pinoy means, born from a FILIPINO Father and FILIPINO Mother. (source: 1987 Philippine Constitution)
So it means, not half-Filipino + half-other races. If NCAA will not allow foreign players, the NCAA might also not allow half breeds, whether they grew up here or elsehwhere.
I've observed during the several games this recently concluded Season '82 several schools claiming their "100% Pinoy". On the contrary, several of their players are half breeds.
If you think having foreign players is unfair, having half breeds also is unfair.

sakit mo naman magsalita...matapos nila paghirapan yung 13-1 record nung eliminations, tapos mas deserving pa yung 2nd place...anyway, unfair na kung unfair, ang importante eh hindi kami sumusuway sa rules ng ncaa...peace

Willie Miller of Letran is a half-breed, Pep Moore of San Sebastian, Gabby Espinas is a half-breed. The US NCAA schools have non americans in their teams (Pinas kasi third world country kaya bihira foreign exchange studs), UAAP teams have half-breeds and foreigners too. San Beda recruited in its team a would be monk who plays football and could not even dribble a ball and shoot free throws, polished and trained him and gave San Beda a championship. Other schools offer free goodies, cars, condos, allowances, over age players, just to play for them (we call them mercenaries), while for San Beda hulog ng langit he,he,he, minimal cost lang, free board and lodging. If you have time, Check the record books of the NCAA and you will find numerous foreigners that played before in the league.

Lastly San Beda did not win by mr. Ekwe's effort alone.See the stats balance ang Red Lions this season...........

When Letran won the NCAA championship in 1987 (the team of libed, the ruiz boys and ayson), there was an American on their team surnamed Johnson (or Jonston?). Nothing wrong with that. It's been going on eversince.

You are correct cobalt, William Johnson was a pure 6'4 American who manned the center slot for Letran for 1 year (1987). He wasn't much of an offensive player but he was a solid rebounder and shot blocker..... at ang ganda ganda ng sapatos niya noon, the original white Jordans w/ Iguana skin.

Yup, kasi he always sported low cut socks also.
I remember his 1st game against JRU (then JRC), nagpakilala siya... 1st half (hindi pa per quarters ang laro nun)... Vergel Meneses was going for a dunk... sinahod niya... palakpakan iyung mga taga Letran. Pero during halftime he approached the JRC bench and apologized to Meneses.

the anser is obvious...
its "YES" We can still win w/out Ekwe!
San Beda defeated Mapua a few days ago with out Ekwe
and just so you know, MAPUA is a strong team in the NCAA.
The Cardinals were able to defeat JRU last Friday ( JRU is one of the favored teams in the NCAA this season but Mapua beat them)
therefore, you can't claim that Mapua is a weak team
because Kelvin Dela Pena and the Cardinals will definitely Kick your team's ***..
(I respect the Cardinals, they trully are a strong team and they will definitely rebound in the second round!)
Anyway, going back to the arguement
please review our roster
1. Yousif Aljamal - NCAA Finals MVP, NCAA/UAAP all star, *being eyed for the National team
2. Pong Escobal - NCAA/UAAP all star, *being eyed for the National team (do I still need to emphasize how good Escobal plays basketball?)
*http://services.inquirer.net/express/07/07/05/html_output/xmlhtml/20070705-74883-xml.html <--check the link to see the players being eyed for National Team line up in the inquirer.net line
3. Ogie Menor - NCAA/UAAP all star, Former NCAA highschool MVP, named as the NCAA player of the week (1st week of the NCAA season), led the San Beda red cubs to a Grandslam in the NCAA juniors tourney
4. David Marcelo - NCAA/UAAP jrs all star MVP, part of the Beda Red cubs dynasty
5. Bam Bam Gamalinda -MVP Asian Finals -Adidas Asian Streetball, part of the Beda Red cubs dynasty
6. JR Tecson - MVP National Finals - Adidas Asian Streetball,
part of the Beda Red cubs dynasty
and the list goes on with the likes of
Borgie Herminda, Raymond Maggay, JR Taganas etc etc
The San Beda Red Lions have recently been recruiting majority
of the San Beda Red Cubs (one of the greatest highschool Basketball teams in history which produced the likes of Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc, Ren Ren Ritualo, LA Tenorio, Magnum Membrere, JV Casio, the Loyzagas and the list goes on)
with a roster like that and an incredible source of talent from the Red Cubs.. tell me VLADIMIR, do you think still think San Beda can't win with out Sam Ekwe?
Kung gusto mo amgtanong ka pa sa mga collegiate basketball analysts like Bill Velasco or talk to your collegiate basketball coaches para ma-isampal pa sa pagmumukha mo ang katotohanan na kaya ng San Beda manalo kahit wala si Ekwe...
(basahin at abangan mo ang column ni Bill Velasco - The Game Of My Life bago ka magpost ng kung ano-ano.. mahirap sayo at sa marami pang tulad mo, post kayo ng post ni hindi kayo nagreresearch.. what a bunch of imbeciles)

you are right. we lost to Letran by 17 pts. but Vergel still able to poured in 31 points in that game. last 10 minutes in the 2nd half di na siya binalik ni coach Kiko Calilan.
