in the juniors division (19)
SAN BEDA- the only founding member left in the league
CSB- fastest expansion team to get the championship
JRU- they have the longest title drought in the seniors division

i dont think so.... i guess it is letran & san beda had produced a lot of basketball players played in the pba. u didn't include samlani, demgillo, macaraya, rocha and others for san sebastian.

jose rizal and mapua also produced such great ball players. hindi nga ganoon kadami tulad ng ibang mga schools, pero pag may nakapasok sulit ang team na kumuha.

thanks for the players i failed to include.
from NCAA schools.

San Beda - The school with the highest academic standard in the NCAA. This precludes the school from getting talented players who are lacking in mental faculties. In other words, talagang mga estudyante lang ang kinukuha ng San Beda kaya through the years hindi sila nagpapanalo sa NCAA.

The current batch of Red Lions is really special. Mga student-athletes talaga.

I suggest you remove the last paragraph. You do not give justice to the other "student-athletes" of SBC in the past years since their last championship. ;)

There is nothing wrong with my post. I did not mean to put down the players in the past years. When I said that this current crop of players is special, it's because they were the ones who ended the 28-year drought.

Enough said.

I have no extensiive first hand knowledge about other schools' academic norms for athletes, but I can say this about San Beda College:

During those years of frustrated title runs, there were two occasions (could be more), when the starting point guard of the national team was a Bedan but could not suit up as a Red Lion because of academic defiencies. No amount of appeals for make up work could be accomodated. In one case, the professor was a Benedictine monk who simply reasoned that the player did not meet the requirements. The failing mark stayed.

More recently, a scout (now retired) disclosed that there was actually an applicant who clearly had skills impressive enough to be in the present Red Lion's starting five but was eventually not accepted because "ayaw mag-aral".

One of the Red Lions was actually baited by a UAAP school by saying "hindi mo kailangan pumasok" [sa class]. The assistant coach of the Cubs simply explained the value of a Bedan education. The "star" stayed in the Lions Den.

The names obviously cannot be disclosed as this would cast negative clouds on their person.

I am sure other NCAA school have similar stories about their athletes.

UPHR isn't the first "university" member of the NCAA. Former members UP and UST are universities. Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle are also universities and they played in the NCAA. UPHR became known as such only during 1997. PCU, a university, already joined the league a year earlier during 1996.

I would like to add that SSC-R is the only NCAA basketball team to win 4 straight crowns in both the Seniors and Juniors divisions. Another interesting fact is that the coaches who led the Baste to that feat are actually very much related to each other. Arturo Valenzona led the Stags to a 4-peat from 1993 to 1996 while his son Raymond, a member of the 1997 UAAP champion team FEU, piloted the Staglets to 4 straight crowns in the Juniors division from 2005-2008.

Mapua is the only school in the NCAA to win 5 straight juniors championship (1968-1972), a feat that the SSC-R Staglets hope to duplicate next season. The Red Robins still holds the record for most Juniors Basketball championships with 18.

Mapua also leads the NCAA in tennis with 16 senior and 17 junior titles.

And, until anyone here proves that other players were able to duplicate this, Freddie Hubalde from Mapua was the only player to play for the Men's Senior Basketball team while still in High School.

SAN BEDA COLLEGE- CALOY LOYZAGA

He attended San Beda College, where he played for the Philippine NCAA Red Lions basketball team.

He led the Philippine National team to a Bronze Medal finish in the 1954 FIBA World Championship and was named to the Mythical Team of that tournament. As of the end of 2006, this third place finish remains the highest finish of any Asian team in the history of the tournament.

Loyzaga, a two-time Olympian, was a many time member of the Philippine national basketball team in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He steered the national team into becoming one of the best in the world, winning four consecutive Asian Games gold medals and two consecutive FIBA Asia Championships.

NCAA is old news, UAAP na ang bida ngayon.

Sports ba o education?

Okei fine ncaa is a major Philippine sports leage, pero palagay ko NCAA would always and forever be behind the shadow of UAAP.

At the end of the day, sports lang yan. Same with other UAAP schools. Sad but true.

NCAA is second nalang, if not third, fourth, etc.

NCAA had it's moment of glory...

The SSC-R Golden Stags is the only school in NCAA Seniors Basketball history to accomplish a season sweep and a clean sweep at that. They first achieved the feat in 1988, when the team bannered by season MVP Eugene Quilban and graduating star Paul Alvarez went 10-0 to automatically annex the NCAA crown. The next season sweep for the Stags came in 1997, when the Stags' Sensational Six, led by season MVP Rommel Adducul, Aramis Calpito, Brixter Encarnacion, Ulysses Tanigue, Jasper Ocampo, and team captain Rommel Daep, powered Baste to a 12-0 win-loss card. The Stags automatically entered the Finals with a twice-to-beat advantage. They eventually dispatched the San Beda Red Lions in the Finals, 84-72, despite struggling in the first half. The 1997 season ended with a clean sweep for the Stags, 13-0, and made the Recto-based squad 5-peat winners. Prior to the Stags' record sweeps, two Letran champion squads almost made the astounding feat but were denied. In 1950, the Letran Knights, bannered by the fabled Murder Inc., was halted by the Carlos Loyzaga-led San Beda squad in their final game to end the season with a 9-1 mark. The 1982 Letran squad, led by season MVP Avelino "Samboy" Lim, finished with the same 9-1 record and was also denied of a season sweep, courtesy of the SSC-R Golden Stags.

SSC-R is also the only school to have experienced a season sweep and a clean sweep in the Seniors and Juniors Basketball Tournaments of the NCAA by virtue of the SSC-R Staglets season and finals series sweeps during the recently-concluded 2008 NCAA Juniors Basketball Division. Those clean records won a 4th straight crown for the Staglets and made SSC-R as the only school to have experienced winning 4 consecutive crowns in both the Seniors and Juniors Basketball Tournaments of the NCAA. The Staglets swept the eliminations with a 12-0 record and entered the finals outright. However, they didn't enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage unlike previous season sweep achievers in the Juniors Division, notably, the 2003 San Beda Red Cubs and 2000 Letran Squires teams. Since the Final Four format was introduced in 1996, teams with clean slates have entered the Finals outright with a twice-to-beat advantage until 2008. The Staglets thus squared off with the Letran Squires in a best-of-three series. Finals MVP Arvie Bringas and rookie playmaker Almond Vosotros led the Staglets in sweeping the Squires, 2-0, to finish with an overall record of 14-0, a clean sweep.
