wow, broadband speeds are increasing again! i've seen the globe broadband tv commercial and it says there that their packages start at 512 kbps. their radio ads say the same thing too. and then suddenly pldt raises their own speeds to match up.

what do you guys think about this?

It's a good thing, of course.

Except if you're on Smart Bro and it's raining. Your broadband transforms into dial-up.

It's a good thing and I think it's' the natural progession. Being a regular IRC user for several years now, I've talked to a lot of people all over the world. Southeast Asian ISPs offer much slower speeds for the amount paid compared to the more developed nations. For example in Sweden, you can get a 10 Mbit connection for ~20 USD, which will only get you at the most something like a 384 or 512 kbps connection here. The same is true for the U.S. although the speed-per-buck ratio is a bit less compared to the likes of Sweden.
----

Current broadband subscribers should be aware of the price shifts because you can possibly avail of a free speed upgrade. For example our SkyDSL 384 kbps was upgraded to 512 kbps because of the pricing shifts. However, the migration wasn't automatic; we had to call up tech support and ask for the upgrade.

the globe broadband and pldt mydsl ads give me the impression that the migration/upgrade is automatic. did you guys see those ads?

I got a 100M download 10M upload connection for 110HKD/month which roughly translates to 15-18USD.

3M connections are enough for a regular PC. The most that I can squeeze out from my current torrent download is 3.5MB/s which resulted in my brand new 300G SATA to fry...... XD

I'm on PLDT MyDSL and I'm on Plan 1995 which is for speeds up to 768kbps. If you check their website the same amount should get me speeds of up to 1.2Mbps. I called up customer service to verify this information and guess what the guy told me. In reality the speed is still on 768kbps. Wala pa daw announcement that this plan will already be on 1.2Mbps at hindi nila alam kung kailan ang implementation. Nauna daw masyado ang website. Wtf?

So I presented a hypothetical situation. What if I am a new customer and I would like to avail of that plan, will I be getting the speed as advertised? His answer is NO. I will only get 768kbps. Wtf ulit???

My Globelines DSL just got upgraded from 768kbps to 1Mbps just this week. This was without even calling Globe for the free upgrade.

Well I guess that cabling/connection costs for the internet providers here are minimal coz most of us are crammed up in 30-50 floor buildings. LOL! Also I threathened not to renew my plan with the provider after my plan ran up, the competition between providers here are pretty fierce, they would rather not earn anything than lose customers.

I think that Korea has the cheapest price for high speed internet connections.

Sweet!!!

I am waiting for the Verizon FIOS in my area. That features Fiber connection in residential areas. Sweet!! Currently, my connection is about 8Mbps down and 384Kbps up. I wonder when is my ISP going to start using DOCSIS 3.0?!?!?! More free speed upgrade when they start using that new specification on cable technology.

Sweet! Does it come with the screeching sound of the modem too?

Why is broadband so expensive here in the Philippines anyway? Is it a problem with infrastructure? Is it because of a lack of competition amongst the telcos?

Think also about the salary in the Philippines. The capacity to pay. If you are earning like P65,000 a month, then P1,995/month for broadband is cheap. How many ordinary people earn that much in a month?

Ang mahirap lang sa ganyang competition, the government consumer agencies are not active enough to make sure that what these promotions claim are actually delivered as promised.

Most of the time, they just want to match-up their competitor's promotions and advertisements in their desperate need to prevent their customers from switching brands.

As I mentioned its mostly the money they need to spend to connect a person that is the driving force behind the price and the competition a close second. Sa pilipinas kasi I assume there are around 500-1000 household per sq KM but here in HK we can multiply that by around 40-50 times.

Currently using FTTH (Fibre to home) IEEE802.3z connection.

I agree. With pldt, in our area, speed increases are noticeable only after about 2-3 months of its notice.

parang sinasampal ako pag nakikita ko thread na to,imagine for the same price,384kbps ang ADVERTISED speed ng Smart Broken, very unrealiable pa ang connection, all throughout the day and lately pati night and madaling araw, dial up speed lang nakukuha ko,60kbps max sa netstatlive.

it has not only become an ISP na sobrang pangit, bakekang na talaga!

Lalo nga bumagal ang connection ko. As I have discussed in the other thread, now I am at 45kbps only. Buti nakakapag-post pa ako sa PEx. Kanina nga hindi ako maka-connect eh. PLDT and Smart, you suck. :grrr:

Add 500 to that and you should be getting 2Mbps, well that's according to PLDT's website. I am not sure if that is true because masyadong misleading and confusing ang mga ads nila sa website.

wahahaha. buti na lang di ako PLDT DSL, at di ko tinuloy ang pagbayad ng reference number ko sa smart bro. haha. yung friend ko sa SFDM na naka Smart Bro e 2 weeks walang connection

3 weeks ago, nag inquire ako sa SkyDSL. after inquiring sa SkyDSL [thinking na 3 weeks might be too long], i inquired sa Globelines Broadband, unfortunately i had to wait naman 2 weeks kasi puno pa raw sa area namin.

last sunday, sa Puregold Makati, may booth ang Globelines broadband, sabi nila meron naman daw available slots sa area namin. so i submitted the application and requirements. they said that i can expect Globelines people here sa house by tuesday-thursday, pero tumawag ako sa Globelines hotline at sinabing di pa encoded ang application ko sa database nila.

the weird part, kahapon, tumawag ang SkyDSL , and it took 3 weeks bago nila narealize na serviceable pala area namin [i just learned about it yesterday]. may pupunta raw mamaya from SkyDSL to bring the application form, at in 2 days pede na ko magkabroadband.

so heto dilemma ko. will i choose SkyDSL for P899 o Globelines for P995?

SkyDSL
256kbps lang sya, pero nagiging 512kbps pag 10PM-10AM, which is within my daily surfing time. pede na ako magkaroon in 2 days.

Globelines Broadband
512kbps na raw ito fixed at kahit anong oras. pero di pa nga encoded application ko, baka mamaya pagantayin na naman ako ng ilang araw pa.

if Globelines Broadband will arrive today or wednesday and if they promise me of a sure slot, pede ko pag-antayin ang SkyDSL until ipacancel ko ito. pero pag walang kasiguruhan ang Globelines, yun ang problema.
