I have plans working in Singapore. Coz I hear that the pay in IT field is good. Is it? Kaysa mag-US dito nalang sa Asia. Hirap pang mag-apply ng US visa. Sa Singapore you need Employement Pass di ba? Dali lang ba makakuha or is it expensive?

I'm still having second thoughts of going there kasi wala naman akong kakilala diyan. Pero I think it would be nice. Para independent from the protective wings of parents. Hehehe mag-rerebelde ba. =)

To PEXERs in Singapore, let's have an EB! :)

Ok, here's how it goes... I have a little egroups thing that I've set up, plus a small MSN Community "tambayan" for Singapore-based OFW's and Pinoy Expats for us to organize get-togethers and keep in touch.

Go to: http://communities.msn.com/SingaporeOFWsMessageRing/

and join in. As for the Egroups one, please e-mail me at "oriond@microsoft.com" and tell me that you want to be included in the Pinoys in Singapore egroups...

:)

Hello y'all!!

Since tagal na rin kayo here, then can speak singlish liao, issit?? Haha biro lang ppl ;P

Anywayz, I'm a student here. We've a growing student community here, though most of those that I know are from NUS coz that's where I study. Been here in Sg for 3 yrs, and will finish my course in 2 yrs. I'm eyeing on the Comms line. Though IT is a strong second choice. Whatever. Tagal pa naman nun :)

Nice to see this thread too!

Uhm, just curious, Orion D. = Orion Dumdum<?>

Can speak Singlish olredi, lah! You finish "Makan" olredi, issit?

Hi theSkeptic,

I chose to use my name as my alias when I first signed up at PEX last year, so I guess I have to live with it.

Actually, I'm forming a small Cybercommunity for Singapore-based Filipinos and OFW's so that we can all keep in touch. Please let your other Pinoy friends know. Here's the link:

http://communities.msn.com/SingaporeOFWsMessageRing

And you can call me at 98266303 or 4335360. I sometimes organize a few gimmicks with the other Pinoys... :)

Hi! anybody here working at EPS Computer Systems in Singapore?

The Saint
Feb 6, 2001, 04:31 PM
I'll be flying to Singapore on Feb 28 to work for a company known as globalnetrelations.com PTE Ltd. Is that a good company? Although I've already signed the contract, I just want to confirm... that is if anybody knows about it. Also, is S$1500 enough to make a living there? That's not my exact salary of course (hehe!) but just would like to have an idea.

I also heard that Singapore is the heart of IT in Asia. Is that true? Too bad I'm not allowed to study kahit part-time there in Singapore. Mas madali kaya maging programmer trainee dyan kaysa sa Pilipinas? Must you also be a computer science graduate or any college course pwede na?

I was in that country last June 2000. Pansin ko lang, napaka snabero ng mga Singaporeans, not a quite a cheerful people. Actually, this is one of my fears in going to that country. Okey lang ba society dyan? Di ba malungkot. When I was in the States kasi, I didn't feel quite lonely because of their cheerful people.

Orion D.
Feb 7, 2001, 06:51 AM
Yo Saint! :)

So you'll be joining us here in Singapore, eh? I don't know about the company, but $1,500 is what I usually budget as the maximum cap for living expenses. Meaning to say, rent, food, travel, and everything can be covered by that, but you won't have much savings with only $1,500. People can still live with it, that's for sure...

Yes, Singapore is the heart of IT in Asia. If you go to many MNC's in Makati and ask where their regional IT administration is done, you'll find that it's in Singapore. Some used to have it in HK, but many started moving to Singapore after the HK handover to China. Plus, some companies used to have their IT HQ in the Philippines, but because of how Erap fouled up our country, they're all moving to Singapore. Procter and Gamble, for instance, had most of its Regional Operations and IT stuff run out of the 6750 Office near Glorietta. But because of how Erap destroyed the Philippine Business Environment, they're now relocating the Filipinos who work in P&G's 6750 office to Singapore.

It's partly true that the Singaporeans aren't as friendly as Filipinos. But in the workplace, depending on what kind of background of colleagues you have, they can be friendly too. The ones who studied abroad or are University graduates tend to be friendly. Join the MSN Community I formed... Its URL is in one of the threads before...

wow.. kitakits tayo sa singapore.. hehehe.. well.. for an IT person w/ starting salary of sg$1500.. medyo mukhang mababa.. dito kse.. mas mataas ang salary ng mga foreigners (kasama pinoy) kesa sa mga locals na singaporeans.. mataas cost of living dito. but $1500 is enough to make a living pero usualy naman.. sa mga na memeet kong mga pinoy din.. me mga kasama rin silang mga pinoy sa hse.. so hati hati sa rent.. so medyo makaka save..

wheew.. well.. b4 me nagpunta mga taga singnet sa pinas.. kaso dadaan ka ng agency.. what i did.. nag papass ako sa friend ko (sa singapore) ng resume ko.. then ni schedule nya ako for interview.. then nagpunta ako singapore as tourist, for interviews .. then after a week.. nung nalaman ko results.. pina dala ko nalang mga requirements para sa application ng employment pass. then ni sched. ko na flight ko papuntang sg.. so medyo tipid... nde na ako dumaan sa agency.. gastos ko lang pamasahe.. at pocket money..

hello! im a pinoy working with singnet...im aware that there's a handful of filipinos working in singapore...but it caught me by surprise that there's a certain community that is growing na. whoever is responsible for this, galeng sobra! :)
anyway, masaya **** ** eh esp if ur with "good company". im very fortunate that the friends i have here are super...as in like family ang turingan kse we live in the same house...not to mention that the love of my life is here na ren (laking tipid sa phone bills hahaha)
to those who are planning to work here, ok **** talaga eh. piece of advice lang...be the best that u can be kse generally maganda ang tingin nila sa filipinos, manage ur finances well coz the main reason why you are here is to save di ba, and most importantly, be good to ur fellow pinoys..alisin na crab mentality coz tayo den nakakahiya in the long run. we've had some bad experiences with some filipios around here, so sana it wont happen again :)
cheers!

Does any of you frequent any bookstores in Singapore?

Or can you list the bookstores that has hard-to-find computer programming books.

Thanks!

hey mupheza! you may want to try this local (singapore) site...

www.mphonline.com (http://www.mphonline.com)

if you have friends here, you could ask them to check out borders, medyo extensive din yung range nila on books.

for all newcomers to singapore....welcome! there's a relatively large community of filipinos here, including professionals, so you're not alone. if you've had the chance to read the other threads on filipinos in singapore, mapapansin niyo yung mga 'regulars' who study/work in singapore. they're a pretty friendly bunch of people, and i'm sure they (including myself) will be more than willing to answer your queries or concerns about adjusting to the singaporean culture (which consists primarily of food, food, and more food...hehehe!!) :toofunny:

fyi, there are numerous filipino church groups, a filipino association of filipinos, a filipino cultural society, a pinoy golfers group, and even a filipino bowlers' association, among others i'm sure. meron rin liga ng basketball sa iba! kung saan naman may pinoy, andun din naman kasi ang basketball eh, di ba? :D

whether long or short term, it's always a pleasure to meet fellow pinoys in another country....yah? ;)

Hey Mo!...What will be your job here in SG? Are you in IT? I'm an engineer working in one of the American Companies here (MNC).

About the place where you can stay, I would suggest that you get referals from fellow pinoys here sa PEX..sayang yung isang room sa place namin eh nakuha na ng isang kaibigan namin recently. We're staying pa naman in the city..very convenient to all sorts of gimik places...With your 500 sgd, you should be able to get your own airconditioned room in a condominium. If your budget is less than that, then you can try living in one of the airconditioned rooms sa HDB flats. Kung talagang gusto mong magtipid further, then you share a room with someone. Pero in your case, kung wala kang talagang ka close pagpunta mo dito, its better you get your own room.

Maraming pinoy dito and if you are connected with an agency, they can even help you look for a temporary or permanent place to stay.

Ciao!

Hi there... I used to work in SG, nice country - clean and quiet and people are disciplined. I'm just so happy to read what's happening there. I moved here in the US 6 months ago from SG. Big difference pero as any typical yuppie, exciting pag may ganitong adventure.

Anyway, I just would like to comment on Swatch's estimate sa housing. Tama sya, about SGD500 kung solo ka sa room, with A/C. Lalo na kung private condo. And the location is an important factor as well, i.e. malapit sa city, MRT, etc. Madali namang makahanap ng tirahan dahil maraming Pinoy who would be willing to make referrals.

well, to those who are wishing to work in SG, that would be an interesting prospect, not to say makakaipon ka dahil mas simple ang mga gimik unlike in Manila. Good luck and more power to Pinoy workers in SG!*okay*

MO

swatch thanks for the info. i treid checking the contact singapore website and i did found out that a solo room would cost 500SGD. yes, im going there alone. company im gonna be working for it located at centennail tower, tamesak ave.

i think you have a point there, since i dont know anyone, its better to have my own room. pero are there any accomodatons that would cost less than 500SGD?

rayseens maybe you could help me find a cheap place like yours para makatipid ako. :)

thanks in advance

hi... i'm graduating by next month... i'm an IT student and i really want to work in Singapore as a java programmer... any advice on how to land an IT job in Singapore?

do you think i should at least gain experience in here first before going to Singapore? or deretcho abroad na? eheh what are the chances of an IT fresh grad (although my 3 months work experince na ako ) landing an IT job in Singapore? and what should i do to be able to land a job in singapore?

thanks

i'm researching this for a friend who happens to receive an offer from an IT company in malaysia, 5500 MYR daw ang salary per month. is that enough for him to live decently in malaysia + save some of course? is the cost of living in malaysia as high as in singapore? is it safe to work there?

thanks!

hi yvetta,

5,500 ringgit is already OK to have a decent living in KL...since standard of living in sg is relatively higher in KL...mas value for money ang ringgit kesa sa SG dollars....normally the price of food and commodities in malaysia is 1/2 the price of that in SG...so your friend can definitely save...its safe to work in malaysia, though once in a while crimes do happen but not as rampant as in the philippines. Tell your friend to accept the job offer...malaysia is fast becoming an industrialized country and can match even singapore in the near future...

hi witty...as with most employers...they prefer candidates who have working experiences than those without..i suggest that u gain experience in Philippines first before you apply abroad...most foreign employers require candidates to have at least 2-3 years experience on the their respective field of expertise...hinay hinay lang..huwag kang magmadali...your time will surely come...

Hi there!
I will be going to Malaysia for work. As of this moment I'm having a problem if the salary offer is enough or it's very low for my profession.

I'm currently working as a Senior Software Engineer here in the Philippines for more than 2 years and someone offered me a work abroad which is in Malaysia.Visual Basic 6 (Front End), MS SQL 7.0, 2000 and 2005 is (Back End) and I'm using Crytal Report (Reporting) and experience in Machine Interfacing.

The offer is
Salary : 1,740 MYR
Monthly Allowance is 800 MYR
Free Accomodation
Free 2 Round tickets in a year (Malaysia - Philippines)

Is it fair enough?

Your help is highly needed so that I can demand if ever to my employer.

Thank you very much and God Bless!

anyway, did you already sign any contract na ba? kung hindi pa, you should try to negotiate the salary.
as you've said, Senior Software Engineer ka na sa Pinas most probably has years of working experience na din. that salary is too low for your profession.

I haven't sign any contract po as of this moment, but most probably they will give it to me within this week. I'm working for less than 3 yrs, and basing on my performance they promoted me that fast. How much would be average salary for me?

Thanks!
