Benilde sweeps SSC
By June Navarro
SWIFT kill.
Duplicating sister school De La Salle University's feat, College of St. Benilde completed its date with history with an emphatic 74-61 runaway triumph over San Sebastian yesterday to win the 76th NCAA men's basketball tournament at the capacity-filled Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
http://inquirer.speedera.net/www.inquirer.net/issues/oct2000/oct12/sports/vergeire.jpg
Only last week, the Green Archers clinched the millennium title of the UAAP, trouncing the FEU Tamaraws in two games.
The Blazers duplicated that as La Sallians celebrated the swift mopping up operations against opponents deemed too tough to demolish.
''Nobody believed that we are capable of winning the championship. So I told them we just have to believe in ourselves and prove our detractors wrong,'' said coach Dong Vergeire of St. Benilde, which entered the league only in 1997.
After an 0-3 start, the Blazers razed every obstacle that came their way, winning 13 of their last 15 matches, including the last two scored against the Stags to win the title.
''This team had been severely criticized but the boys are too eager and determined to win. Frankly, they deserved to be here,'' said Vergeire, who piloted the country to a gold in the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta.
In the juniors championship, underdog Mapua Red Robins finished off erstwhile league-leader Letran Squires, 77-55, to snare the crown and cap a year of turnarounds in the league.
The Red Robins snapped the Squires' 14-game winning streak in the eliminations and overhauled the latter's twice-to-beat advantage to share the limelight with the Blazers, who, similarly, trounced the highly favored UPHR Altas in the Final Four.
The Blazers actually encountered little resistance, taking the game away early in the second half as the Stags had a nightmarish date on the stripe.
Defeat seemed imminent, as the Stags couldn't get their rhythm on the stripe going, flubbing 28 of their 44 free throws for a measly 36 percent clip.
In contrast, the Blazers had a heyday at the stripe, coupled by their torrid outside shooting and accurate forays inside the paint. The Blazers had a 77 percent clip from the line, sinking 21 of 27 attempts.
From an 11-12 deficit, the Blazers clustered 10 points to make it 21-12.
With their deep bench, the Blazers easily took the half, 37-25, before speeding to a 16-point margin, 54-38.
The Stags had all the time to mount a rally as the game was still 11.24 away from conclusion.
But the Blazers were up to every challenge posed by the Stags, whose awful free throw shooting literally wiped out their dream of forcing a deciding third game.
''Our free throw shooting killed us,'' said Stags coach Turo Valenzona in Tagalog. ''That simple.''
The scores:
(Juniors)
Mapua 77-Malig 26, Martin 19, Martinez 13, Cantos 10, Dela Cruz 4, Sta. Maria 3, Estilo 2, Villafuerte 0, Estrada 0.

di nyo ba napansin na both squads won despite all odds? La Salle won despite being the underdogs same goes with benilde. At the begining of the season no one thought they could do it. La Salle daw is third only to UST and Atneo, while benilde was supposed to be another onlooker.

Tapos yung OOOOOWOOWOOWOOOOHHHH! Animo La Salle!!! Ginawa nilang OOOOOWOOOWOOOWOOOOHHHH! Animo Benilde!!!

What I know is that the CSB administration didn't allow the CSB peppers to compose their own cheers, although they are very much capable of composing their own. Another is that CSB is connected to La Salle-main, the CSB admin. wants CSB to follow the traditional cheer of La Salle-main. AltarBoy^_^ can give a deepper information about it.

I see, sorry if I missinterpreted your message. Anyway, you have a point there, since LaSallians rin naman kami and carries the name of De La Salle and sings the same Alma Mater, why not? But do you think La Salle-main would agree?
But what can we do? we added St. Benilde to our "pray for us" routine and "Benildeans" who are studying in CSB and serves as our identity. We Benildeans are proud to be Benildeans after all.

To continue with MilMarQ's statement, I agree that it sounds uncomfortable talaga to brother and sister Lasallians but we have to follow rules imposed by the "all-powerful" NCAA committee on us. We used to shout Lasalle but Benilde. We had to abide by these rules. Pero we cheered the DERECHO LASALLE in the dying seconds of the NCAA championship game. Happy? We really can't use Lasalle but Benilde. Cheers like Rektikano with Lasalle in them have been changed to Benilde. Pati Lasalle spelling eh ginawa naming Benilde spelling to "please" committee idiots. Anyway, I think it's best din that we change it to Benilde but I hope that our pep squad would create more cheers that would put a distance to Lasalle para hindi naman lumabas na umaasa lang kami sa mga cheers ng Lasalle. Just check other threads regarding our improvements on our squad and you will understand. Peace! :smokin:

I know. We have been complaining about that since we entered in 1998. The committee dimwits gave us a memorandum and we followed it. Then, biglang nag-sulputan mga rulings na NO WARPAINT, NO DLSU na nakalagay sa Bass drums. It was all pathetic on their part. We got suspended for doing the archer stance that we justified as "blaze of fire" stance lang. The CSB Pep Squad is an organization founded on the traditions of the Lasallian cheers and they "manipulate" us like puppets for their own amusement and personal gains. Akala siguro ng committee eh wala kaming organization and we just popped out of nowhere to cheer for Benilde. Our hatred for the NCAA committee brought out the best in us and we showed them that WE are the best cheering squad in the NCAA. Now, they're complaining that we're too loud daw. Sus! Kaya nga cheering squad eh! :smokin:

Now that’s something new: a cheering squad that is too loud!
There’s no denying that the NCAA Board has been on CSB’s case since its inclusion, but as I’ve said before, some of the board’s decision is not as idiotic as it seems to be. War-paints, halftime performances during the Finals, and the different schools’ distinctive stance are mostly tolerated in the UAAP, but in the NCAA, where even a simple jeer can lead to a riot (JRC-Letran incident) and where a player – supposedly his/her school’s role model – shows maniacal tendencies (Letran’s Soriano’s action), the board decision to ban such make some sense. I guess they are not really against CSB in doing such, but they are wary of the reactions of their students towards such acts. It is like they are admitting that their students are not mature enough to handle such a trivial show of support.
It’s the prohibition of using DLSU, La Salle, and even the green-and-white that isn’t completely clear to me. Poor LSGH. I kindda understand their resentment to DLSU. I guess they still feel that La Salle is one of the schools and apparently the most recent one to abandon them. I thought that they were beyond that already when they included DLSU-CSB in its rank, but I guess they are not completely over it. They want to have some form of payback – and what better way to do that than to prevent the Benildeans from professing they are indeed Lasallians, but guess what, I think this ruling actually did some good for the Benildeans. They forced the Benildeans to be Benildeans more than the Benildeans wanted to.
The NCAA might have expected to have a “part” of La Salle as their whipping boy, but they found out that eventhough they prohibited the Benildeans from openly professing that they La Sallians, the Benildeans were able to show that they are. The Animo the’ve shown through the years and the Lasallian winning tradition are dead give-aways. :D

I don’t agree that ’di magandang pakinggan yung Benildeans version of La Salle’s cheers. It is more of different sounding. We are so used to La Salle’s version that any adaptation will sound different. When I tried to do the Benildeans version during the NCAA I bit my tongue several times. As fate would have it, Blazers and Archers have the same number of letters and syllables. It also helps that they rhyme. Benilde and La Salle also have the same number of letters and syllables, it would have been great if they also rhyme. Benilde and Blazers fit pretty well in La Salle cheer. One factor that is giving a different sounding cheer is the fact that there are four letters in DLSU while there are only three in CSB, so the Benildeans version of Derecho La Salle and D-LS--U cheers is different sounding. Give it some more time and it will cease to be different sounding.
I actually agree with CSB admin.’s decision to stick with a variation of La Salle’s cheer because it will be a reflection of what Benildeans really are – La Sallians which are also distinctly Benildeans. :D

I sincerely agree with you on that part. As time went by, natuto rin ang Pep Squad maging flexible and soon enough, we made our own mark. Although we substituted Lasalle for Benilde in our cheers, we gained respect din from the other schools in the NCAA and of course, sister Lasalle. We rarely use DERECHO LASALLE dahil bawal nga. We also changed the cheer na D...LS...UUUUUU to C...SB...Go Benilde, Go Go Benilde na lang. I guess we have to be more "distinct" pa talaga sa Lasalle when it comes to cheering.
Pero the thing is, they single out CSB in their rules talaga. Even our rep to the NCAA admits that the committee was doing its best to find a mistake in us. We almost lost half the line-up before the season started, we almost never had the right to sing the alma mater, and a lot more of those rules na hindi naman nila sinasabi in the first place na bawal pala. It's like they're waiting for us to make a wrong move and just smack the NCAA rulebook in our faces. It's injustice on our part lang. I also pity LSGH for suffering because of them.
Thank you for the enlightment Prokorpyo. Peace! :smokin:

My point is that we shouldn’t be upset with what the NCAA Board is doing, eventhough CSB seems to be always on the losing end. The bottomline is that they are trying to prevent the Benildeans from professing that they are also Lasallians, but the only things that they can prevent are the superficial ones. There is more to being a Lasallian than wearing a green-and-white uniform, spelling DLSU and La Salle in shirts, drums, and cheers, there is more than singing the alma matter. The true measure of being a Lasallian can’t be prevented by mere board rulings. As long as you remember religio, mores, & cultura, as long as you strive to be Christian achiver for God and country you are a Lasallian as you can ever be. Benildeans have been showing these Lasallian values including the Animo and our winning tradition, so there is nothing to be upset about.
Now if you rebel against the board, they will not only have a reason to expel CSB but can also give the impression that Benildeans are jologs. Now that would be sad. All these just because of superficial details - which in the end don’t mean a thing! :D

Again, I am humbled with your wisdom Prokorpyo. Mere chants and shirts can never stop a true Lasallian. They are just wearing us down as one season goes by and we are still in probation talaga. Actually, we stopped rebelling with the help of our new and improved moderator who seems to know every need of our squad. We rebelded because we knew something was wrong in the system. Sila lang lumalabas na jologs. We are just fighting for our rights. To brand us as such would not deter our hunger for justice. They fear and ridicule us because they know that we are telling the truth. Walang makakatulong sa mga Benildeans kundi kapwa Benildeans and Lasallians. We just can't be quiet about these things dahil mali ang pamamalakad nila. We cannot and will not tolerate their manipulation. If you were inside us Prokorpyo, you will definitely cry foul. We are just doing our job in fighting for our rights in the NCAA.
Nagkaroon pa ng meeting ng mga head cheerleaders nuon about our cheers and uniform. I know Lasalle had a rocky start din sa UAAP but that did not stop them or their cheering squad from making the league exciting and equal for all. We fight for equal rights and what is right for all para sa NCAA. And that my friend, is the sad state of the NCAA. Full of misconceptions, irregularities and inconsistencies in the rulings.

Medyo history in the making si Coach Dong for himself din. He was in his first tour of duty as coach last season and the greatest debut among the NCAA coaches to win the crown. I think he has two more years (depends on his contract kung renewed). I just hope he can still whip up the remaining Blazers for a back-to-back crown next year! :smokin:

I BELIEVE.
ANIMO BENILDE!!!
Back-2-back? Solid pa ba yung line up nila? Same coach parin ba?
Yes there'll be a solid line-up for next year since the entire team is intact with only Eric Cruz leaving since he graduated already.

The championship should be special for Dong 'coz when he coached San Beda to the NCAA finals against SSC-R in '96 and '97 naging victims ng Stags yung Lions. So a sweet revenge of sorts for Coach Dong.

I just hope he doesn't jump to another coaching stint sa pros or pbl agad. :smokin:

Nov. 11 pa ang start ng PYBL. Jay Lapinid will not be suiting up for the Blazers dahil kinuha siya sa PBL ng isang commercial league. Pinayagan na ba sila ng NCAA maglaro? Paano ang NBL nila? :smokin:
ANIMO BENILDE!!!

A big no-no on their part. Unlike UAAP players who need only 2 years to play, sa NCAA required eh 3 years before joining the PBL. The rest will have to wait like Sunday Salvacion and Mark Magsumbol. Kakainis nga eh! :grrr:
Baket ganun?

i read in the papers that the ncaa board recently waived the 3 year rule for ncaa players.

What newspaper and what date? Medyo lamang ang UAAP on the eligibility rulings kaysa sa NCAA. I dunno pero, matagal na yang ruling na yan na dapat naging 2 years lang. Jay Lapinid is playing for PharmaQuick with the three players of San Sebastian (Alfad, Coronel, and Macapagal), Letran's Billy Moody and Orlan Tama, and Miko Roldan of FEU.

What's the reason why the UAAP has an advantage over the NCAA? Any discriminations?

These are the reasons (I think) why UAAP is a better collegiate league than NCAA, although NCAA has the history. Here goes:
1)UAAP teams are stronger than NCAA teams because the universities have larger population which leads to larger athlete selectivity.
2)UAAP, I think, has bigger budget than NCAA.
3)UAAP has better coverage than NCAA.

So, do these make a valid reason for making the 3-year residency in NCAA before entering the PBL instead of only 2-year residency in UAAP?

I think nag-start din ang UAAP sa 3-year residency before it was amended to 2 years. Can somebody please look into this dahil matagal na kasi ang 3-year residency period sa NCAA. One reason I would cite might be the fact nga that UAAP is greater in coverages, and may advantage sila sa NCAA players dahil UAAP players are favored to get recruited in the PBL, MBA and PBA.
