While its big brother whooped it up for its tremendous three-peat, College of St. Benilde earned its own distinction, coming of age only in its third year in the league by enshrining itself the NCAA champion.
The Blazers fashioned out a masterful 74-61 decision over the San Sebastian Stags to clinch the 76th NCAA crown before a jampacked crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
And so while the green and white of La Salle became the dominant colors in a massive victory party for the Archers’ UAAP conquest, St. Benilde responded with its own blaze of glory and the joy for fans and supporters from both schools simply overflowed from the happy span of Taft down to Estrada and along Vito Cruz.
It was an impressive run of four straight wins for the Blazers who got into the title playoff by upending the tough Perpetual Altas twice in the Final Four and ambushing the Stags in Game One.
Mark Magsumbol starred anew two days after leading his team to a nail-biting 66-64 win by pacing the Blazers with 15 points for his school’s first ever seniors title in three years.
"Mark (Magsumbol) played another huge game for us and he deserved to be the series Most Valuable Player," said CSB coach Dong Vergaire. "But this is a team game and I’m proud to say that its teamwork and our determination that brought us this title."
Early in the opening half, Mark Macapagal led the Stags in a 12-11 start but Magsumbol outduelled him in the ensuing minutes after igniting a 10-0 blitz that turned the game in the Blazers’ favor, 21-12.
With the Stags muffing crucial free throws, the Blazers hung tough to keep a 54-43 lead midway in the final half before unleashing a crippling offensive that virtually took the heart and fight from the embattled Stags.
Meantime, host Mapua Institute of Technology completed a giant-sized upset when it swept Letran, 77-55, to cop the juniors crown.
