View Full Version : Misconceptions about the Cordilleras

Okay.. I wont rant here or anything..
I just want to correct some misconceptions about the cordilleras..

01. People there still wear G-strings
- This is one big misconception that people still seem to believe.. It is not true any more. Cordillerans dress the same as people in manila do.. although the fashion taste would range to the more rugged kinds of style.. It is not that I would like to turn my back on my heritage. It is just that G-Strings are now used for purely ceremonial purposes only. And when it is worn, it is worn as a mark of Pride.

02. Cordillerans are short, dark skinned an have kinky hair.
- Any student who has studied his history would find that this is not true. For Cordillerans come from Indonesian stock and as a rule, they are taller than the average Filipino, have fair skin and have straight hair. While I am on this topic, let me also debunk the myth about cordillerans having black gums. they do not as a rule have black gums!

03. The Cordilleras is a backward country
- On the contrary, they are up to date on technology. except that they only choose what to use. An example is Sagada. During the first days of Cable TV, sagada was one of the first to have cable tv..and they had one of the great setups. since they had dual satellite dish setups.

04. Cordillerans are jologs.
- this is a matter of opinion. But I do not believe that they are.. actually, I find that cordillerans are not. The thing is, cordillerans do not really are for outward appearances. what they really care about is the inside. they dont care if you are a famous actor, a president or a simple janitor. if you are a cool personto be with, then you a re a cool person. tey dont believe in ostentatious pretensions. there was one time my friends and I were drinking up in the mountains and a guy came out of the bushes who seemed to have hiked a good deal.. and we invited him to drink with us. and he did.. and only upon closer inspection did we see that he was actually Robin Padilla.. and the reaction? nothing.. we just went on drinking..

nway.. can you tell me any othe misconceptions about the cordilleras? if you have any questions.. tell me and I will tryt o answer it..

Additional misconception...

Cordillerans are poor conversants in the English language (or even illterate)...

NO! They are not... as a matter of fact, there are even parts where the natives are even more fluent in English than Filipino (Tagalog)... coming from the fact that foreign missionaries were (and some still are) the main teachers in villages and towns (and just like Saint Louis University in Baguio... still run by Belgian priests, and still is being financially supported by their religious orders in Europe)

Another...

Cordillerans are cannibals

NO They are not. This misconception, i believe, comes from the truth that Cordillerans were HEADHUNTERS... (although some tribes still prefer this way of exacting revenge upon their tribal enemies, most have changed their way into reporting to the authorities {cops/police, etc.} the crimes commited and for the investigation of such crimes)... Headhunting in the Cordilleras has been the athlete's equivalent of earning trophies in times of war...

Peace!

there are such people
and I can do nothing but pity them for they keep their ownselves wrapped up so much in that little world of theirs that they fail to see a lot of beauty outside of it.

Another thing about Baguio..

Some people wonder why people from Baguio seem to be so friendly and talkative..

This is derived from the fact that Baguio is composed mostly of students. almost 50 percent or more of the population are students. Students who come from all over the country and even outside the country.

With people coming from all over, friendships are very tenous. people you meet who you may want to make friendships with may not be there the next sem, the next month, the next week or even the next day..

So you learn to create friendships that are meaningful as soon as possible. for you never know when you will see that person again. it may be tomorrow, it maybe next month, it may be next sem or it may be after several years.

And that is why a lot of baguio people are talkative and very friendly.. since they have learned that if you want friendhsip, you have to move now.. not later.. for you may never know when later will be

id rather not use the word talkative--id rather say cordial and too hospitable to a fault.Coz when you say talkative it could be connoted that we're blabber mouths which i think would lead to another mis-conception and we wouldn't want that di ba.

contrary to your observations i find people of the Cordilleras as low-keyed people. That's why celebrities frequent Baguio because they dont find fans or people screaming or hounding them.--we leave such people in peace.if ever we notice them its just a friendly 'hi' or 'hello' aside from that, houses are not much decorated outside but try to get inside and see that most households even in the remotest place have the latest gizmos and gadgets.

baguio has changed a lot, hasn't it? i heard a lot of new things about baguio when my friend from LA went back for a two-week visit. baguio is a nice place with wonderful people (most of the time, anyway :bleh: )
tama nga si assassin_mage, baguio is composed of mostly students, kaya we may seem to be very friendly and all that... oh, and i remember the days, too when a celebrity would be walking at session and di pinapansin... now... i think kailangan na ng bodyguard!
... and when you can still smell the pine trees and the morning dew on my window.... :shy:
even then, baguio is still home for me... :)

Baguio has indeed so much changed in many ways...these changes were mainly brought about by the concerted effort of both private and public sectors in the hope that Baguio would recover after that killer earthquake 10 years ago and I must say we admire them for that.

The city boasts of the fact that it has been consistently The Cleanest and Greenest City in the entire Philippines and has been elevated in the Hall of Fame. Thus one can still enjoy those pine scented, dewey mornings plus the afternoon fog.
