On Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Transport Medium?
Culture Medium and Culture Age?
Susceptibility Testing: Macro or Microbroth Dilution?
Sensitivity Testing: Oxacillin or Cefoxitin?

Are there any other sites aside from NCCLS?

Transport Medium: BBL Cullture Swab Collection and Transport System

Culture Medium: Chromogenic Culture Media

Conventional methods for the laboratory detection of MRSA include disk diffusion testing, recommended by the NCCLS; broth microdilution minimum inhibitory concentration testing; and oxacillin agar screen test. Many reports have highlighted difficulties and errors in the laboratory identification of MRSA with use of these and other automated or instrument-based test methods.

Amplification of genetic determinants by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays may be used to more rapidly and accurately detect antimicrobial resistance on the basis of organism genotype. All strains of MRSA have the mecA gene, whereas susceptible strains do not. PCR assays have been used successfully to amplify and detect mecA gene sequences from clinical isolates and to detect MRSA directly from clinical specimen within a few hours.

Sensitivity Testing: Cefoxitin disk diffusion test is more sensitive than
oxacillin discs in confirming MRSA.
