Recent Philippine press reports have identified a new group of universities which has started to act as a self-consciously elite lobby and pressure group: the 'G8'. According to the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) the five are UP (University of the Philippines), DLSU (De La Salle University), UST (University of Santo Thomas), MSU-IIT (Mindanao State University – Iligan), USC (San Carlos), SU (Silliman University), SLU (Saint Louis) and CDU (Cebu Doctor’s University), and it describes them as the 'super-elite'. (All eight are research-lead universities).
The G8 have begun to meet regularly and to plan their own path through the upheavals that are currently transforming Philippine higher education.
These eight elite colleges share the following: strong research outputs, high teaching ratings, many famous names in public life, a major impact on the outside world, and big international standing. Three are based in Manila, the other five in picturesque provincial towns, six are multi faculty and two are specialist (MSU-IIT and Cebu Doctor’s University-although in both cases the specialisms are broad rather than narrow).
They all, especially UP, attract huge numbers of international students, and they are currently expanding their international connections, and they are all tough to get into. Maybe it would be useful to discuss them here-especially issues like fees, facilities and links with foreign universities.
