It runs from May 18-26 2006, and is hosted by Ateneo De Manila University. The event drew around 80 teams and 60 adjudicators from different countries in, er, this part of Asia. So far, 6 rounds has been done. The last round will be held tomorrow.
The format used is, of course, the Asians one. In this format, there are two teams competing (affirmative and negative) with three speakers in each team. Each speaker is to give his constructive, followed by reply speeches made by either first or second speaker of each team. They have a lovely 30 minutes of prep time.
1. NTU A and ADMU A, the teams that made it to the grand finals of AUDC last year, faced each other in Round 4. NTU A won, by a very small margin.
2. As of round 4, all 5 ADMU teams had 3-1. Now, they have gone to separate directions.
3. UPMB faced NTU A, the team that beat ADMU A, and won. I believe there are one or two UPM teams that have clean slates. ()
4. DLSU A had a clean slate, until they lost to UST A.
5. UPDA, usually an expected breakee, is "in trouble". They probably have 4-2, or even 3-3, now.
Hmmm... I think UPM is really stepping-up in this tournament. ADMU is still doing good, but not as good as I expected (esp. ADMU A). DLSU and UP are also up there. I'll post more updates later.

They were brilliant daw.
Worlds-breaking quality.

And you shouldn't been too surprised about UPM B.
They're a topnotch team. ;)
Many experience and established debaters feel that they are highly underrated, in fact.
It's good that they're getting their share of the limelight now.

what's the update?

May 23, 2006, 01:02 AM
^^I guess I was just surprised that a B team would overshadow their A team by that much. :)
----------------------------------
Breaking teams have been announced. No one ended up with a 7-0; the highest is 6-1. Here are the top 5:
1. ADMU A
2. ADMU B
3. UPM B
4. UST A
5. NUS A (? I think)
ADMU C also got in. DLSU A is ranked around the 12th place, NTU A within the top 10 (7th?). UPD A I forgot, perhaps 9th. It seems like Ateneo is still dominating.
Also, ADMU A and UPM B met at the 7th round. ADMU A won.
(Btw, Break Night was held at Dish, at the ABS-CBN complex :) )

Being a B team, or a C team, or even a D team doesn't mean very much for a lot of institutions at AUDC. :P
Especially when you talk about UPM, when their team code assignments are largely arbitrary.
Of course, that's not to say that UPM B is better than UPM A necessarily. Just that A is not necessarily better than B either.

Octofinals was held this morning, and from the 16 who broke, 8 advanced to the quarterfinals, which was held in the afternoon. These were the matches:
ADMU A vs UPD A
ADMU B vs NTU A
UPM B vs UPD D
ADMU C vs DLSU A
The semi-finalists will be announced during the championship dinner, which will be held tonight.
Edit: I just noticed... 7 out of 8 teams from the Philippines! Hmmm... not bad. Not bad at all. ;)

Semis held this morning; ADMU A faced ADMU C, while ADMU B faced UPM B. The motion was something about not giving internet space to radical political groups. Well, ADMU lorded over everyone, as ADMU A and B won in their respective rounds. So it was an all-Ateneo finals.
The finals came in, with the motion that criminals who committed a crime in another country would not be extradited if the punishment that awaits the criminal is execution.
As expected, it was a bloody round. Many rooted for ADMU B, the underdog of the match. At the end of the round, many predicted a team B win, but some contended that team A would still get the trophy.
However, with a 5-4 split (in which the audience "ooooooh"ed), ADMU A still won. :)
BNU won in EforL (English as foreign language); I forgot who their opponents were.
In individual awards, ADMU still hoarded everything. The top two adjudicators of the tournament are Jess Lopez and Bobby Benedicto, respectively. Someone from CSB and FEU also made it in.
For the top speakers of the tournament, 6 out of 12 (should be 10, but there were ties) came from ADMU. Miko Biscocho tied with two other people for 10th place. Mahar Mangahas (ADMU) tied with the UPM B whip for the 5th place. Sharmila Parmanand was 4th, Glenn Tuazon 3rd and Leloy Claudio 2nd. Charisse Borromeo was the tournament's best speaker. All of the top four are from Ateneo.
The grand finals best speaker gave a surprise. Miko Biscocho, only an incoming sophomore, won the award.

i believe one UST speaker also made it as one of the top ten best speakers, Ms. Cyris Ng. anyway, ateneo really did a great job of DOMINATING the semis and finals. Kudos to miko for such a surprisingly multiawarded performance. there is a great future for this kid. lastly i say great job to UPM for a VERY STRONG preformance this year, beating in the elims as well as in the breaks some of the best local and international schools. you guys make the philippines proud!!!

So are Mahar Mangahas (ADMU) - an UPCAT reject. He's really a total black ship of the family. His dad is a very smart guy. He's a UP alumnus and a very die-hard one. I can imagine how terribly pissed his dad was when he found out that his freak homosexual son did not make it to his alma mater school.... well, looks like ADMU has become a very popular hub for bakletas. Must be due in part of this so-called Jesuit connections.......

Six-time national champion ADS gets support of PLDT Foundation
June 2006
For earning recognition for the Ateneo De Manila University and the Philippines, six-time national champion Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) will be supported by the PLDT Foundation (PLDTF), which will serve as its primary corporate sponsor, beginning this year.
PLDTF, a non-stock, non-profit organization, has agreed to provide a sum of Php1 million yearly for three years, from 2006–2008, to support the ADS in the team’s effort to travel to various national and international debate competitions. The foundation supports “education and the formation of leaders imbued with Christian values.”
The sponsorship agreement was signed on June 2, 2006 by university President Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ, on behalf of the Ateneo; PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, on behalf of PLDTF; and Roland Glenn Tuazon, on behalf of the ADS.
For its part, the ADS agreed to participate in necessary publicity or public relations efforts of the PLDTF, with a commitment to continue its excellent performance in domestic and international debate competitions.
In January 2006, two Ateneo Debate Society teams emerged as octo-finalists in the final series of the 26th World Universities Debating Championship held in Dublin, Ireland. They were the only Asian teams to make it to the octo-finals, outclassing over 600 debaters from the best institutions around the world.

Now, now, JeoffDomingo. Practically all major debate tournaments require you express yourself in straight (no pun intended) English. I'm sure you can do that. You wouldn't want to be the black ship, right?

I wonder how one's straight English relates to a curvilinear sexual preference.

Yes, I also notice that this Atenean_gay has a straight english, which he is really very proud of, just like any gay would be, but he is lonely because he is gay. he has a straight enhlish but his sexual preference is somewhat crooked. i feel pity for this lonely guy.

Er, JeoffDomingo/Leonell_Mercado/blueLOCO/etc., I don't think debating championships allow alternicks either. You're starting to disappoint us.
This thread is about the Asian University Debating Championship...and unfortunately for some like Mr. Leonel and Blue Loco...Ateneo showed everybody who is the top school in this field right now. Its hard to argue this FACT.

I believe that's Cyris Aquino from the graduate school of UST team A. Along with cyris were John baluyot and Eric Javelosa. Maybe you are referring to Carl Ng of UP? yes, ateneo really did a good job,as usual
by the way, UST team A managed to capture a championship title, winning the 1st European Commission–Ombudsman (EC-OMB) National Debate Championship at the ateneo de manila defeating ateneo.
Meanwhile, an independent Thomasian debater, along with other members of the Philippine University team, won in the 3rd UST Inter-Varsity debate competition last May 15 and 16 at the Civil Law Lobby.
Larcina, a Civil Law graduate, together with ADMU’s independent debater, Bobby Benedicto and UP graduate Carl Ng, defeated representatives from ADMU in the Final Match.
kudos to the thomasian debaters
