The problem with the NCAA and the media is their way of handling the San Beda question.

Gosh, they have been hyping San Beda's team year in year out. This solidifies the notion that the NCAA need a San Beda championship to lift the NCAA's stature as THE alternative to the much commercialized UAAP. Which in my opinion is the source of the animosity towards SAn Beda by the entire league, except probably for Benilde (they would rather be identified BEFORE with DLSU and the rivalry with Ateneo) The year in year out hype shows the NCAA's desperate need for a San Beda finals appearance.

Oh well...in any case, San Beda's performance in the off-season is an indicator of the revival of their squad. Probably this time the hype is for real.

Two seasons ago, San Beda made it in the final 4.

Last season they won just 4 games. But 5 of their defeats were by 6 points or less. All of which were attribured to the Red Lions inability to break the press.

Coming into Season 82, only one key player from last season will be gone - Jerome Paterno. But what is significant is they have 2 new players who can play the point - Hermida and Escobal. So, that "pressing matter" is now addressed.

Aljamal, Angeles and Maggay are the most senior members of the team. With a tall line up and 2 PGs added to the rotation, San Beda is a legit contender.

Duon sa ayaw maniwala...well, 'di rin naman ako taga-San Beda, pero kung tulad kong mahilig kayo sa basketball, manood kayo ng isa o dalawang laro ng San Beda sa darating na NC' para malaman.

The animosiry against San Beda has always been about your "perceived" elitist attitudes towards the other NCAA schools. In my opinion, the hate is more deeply rooted in the pinoy psyche's infatuation withe melodrama, and you guys have alwyas been painted as the rich brats who do not want to mingle with the other NCAA schools...

I understand that said perception is wrong as many Bedans that I have met were far from being elitists. :love: Then again I may be biased since my circle include down to earth Bedans and the soo elite feeling La Sallians...in fact one Bedan friendd is married to a La Sallian.:lol: Such a riot.:p

Mid of last year, the boosters started a campaign to end the title drought on the 28th year at the 82nd season.

Yes, San Beda is entering the 28th year without the coveted basketball title. But they INTEND to end it this coming season.

But more than the will, intent and desire they have complemented this with good recruits under a good coach in Koy Banal.

Hindi biro makatapat ang San Beda sa NC starting June24.

Aside from the "veterans" Aljamal, Angeles and Maggay, nandiyan sina Menor, Tecson, Taganas and Gamalinda who all have gained a year experience. Hindi na maninibago ang mga yan.

Then they have the 6'8" future Benedictine monk Sam Ekwe. Very athletic and has very sound basketball skills.

Of course to address the problems at the backcourt, there's Hermida and Escobal.

That's just 10 names from a 15 man roster. If you can see the aspirants for the other 5 spots, you will agree that this is one helluva team.

I am not a Bedan, so this post is not intended to hype the team. But I tell you, this RL team is a legit title contender.

But what the opposition should fear the most is the thought that San Beda has enough talent to dominate the NCAA for the next 3 to 4 years.

Just look at the eligibility of its players, including this Season 82:-

Menor, Tecson and Taganas can all play for 4 more years.
Hermida has a 5 yr eligibility.
Ekwe has 2.
Escobal has 2.
Aljamal, if I am not mistaken also has 2.
Gamalinda has 2.

Just take the four homegrown talents of Menor, Tecson, Taganas and Hermida, and have them together for four years is a scary thought if I were in the opposition. That's one solid core.
