it's not true.... marunong naman gumamit ng utak ang MANCOMM ng NCAA, pag pinalaro nila yan...para na rin nilang kinonsinte ang ginawang pandaraya ng mga school officials ng DLSU. in fact hindi na nga pinalaro ng JRU yang mga players na iyan dahil sa subject defficiencies (aside sa juicy offer made by DLSU) tapos makakalaro nila ang school na nameke ng school records? come on it doesn't make any sense to me.

letranense: try reviewing NCAA's history. the Letran-DLSU rivalry went up to a point when La Salle students ganged up to beat a student of Letran and Danding Cojuangco's "goons" went to Intramuros and fired guns towards to Letran campus.

The collegiate sports have really changed. The vibrancy of the drumbeat, the ambiance of the cheering crowd, and the adrenaline rush of collegiate sports were unveiled long before our parents are born, and since then, the establishment of the National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] became the lair of great athletes in the land.

This article is designed to provide refreshing information about the history of the NCAA. If you are the hype who neglects the past and live as a happy-go-lucky person, you may now turn the page and keep on wandering with your preferences. However, if you want to know the heck of your purpose in going to the Araneta coliseum and Cuneta Astrodome during game, you may freely glance with the Information handed down by the author.

So sit back, keep your feet up and enjoy how history unfolds itself while cherishing the present fame and glamour of NCAA season 81, One at 81.

HOW LEGENDS UNFOLD

Under the influence of the Americans, basketball became a popular leisure activity for collegiate students. This paved the way for the creation of different collegiate league that enhances collegiate camaraderie and athleticism. Among these is the “liga catolica”, which is comprised of then Colegio de San Beda, De La Salle College. Ateneo de Manila College, San Vicente de Paul College and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

The Dawn of the NCAA was unveiled in 1924 under the leadership of the late Dr. Regino R. Ylanan, former physical Director of the University of the Philippines (UP). With the help of different colleges and universities in Metro Manila, he established a league that aims to bind all the colleges and to unify all potential players in the country to produce caliber athletes who can eventually represent the country in the Olympics and other international competitions. Thus, the new league was formed, making the UST, San Beda, La Salle, UP, Ateneo, University of Manila and National University as the pioneer members of the NCAA.

However, in 1932, UP, NU and UST withdrew from the NCAA to establish their own league which they called the “Big Three League.’ In 1935, the Big Three League was dissolve to pave the way for the creation of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) in August 23, 1938. The UAAP only accepted schools that had university status while the NCAA decided to concentrate the teams involves as pure Manila-based colleges.

TAKE YOUR PICK!

Basketball was the only sport played in the inauguration season of the NCAA. But a year after, football, track and field, relays and swimming were introduced to offer a wider range of sports in the league. In 1927. Lawn tennis was introduced, which the new comer, Jose Rizal College, captured the honor becoming the first ever NCAA seniors lawn tennis champ.

In 1960, the NCAA policy board approved the inclusion of the general champion or overall championship award, which aims to motivate member schools to support all the NCAA sporting events. In the same year volleyball was introduced and the midget division was used.Softball was then introduced in 1965 NCAA season with Ateneo grabbing the honor of winning the first senior’s NCAA football crown.

While, the p[popularity of chess and table tennis in the late 70’s opened the opportunity of these sports as an addition in the NCAA sports roster in 1978 and 1985, respectively.

Then, Women’s softball was launched in 1975 to address the clamor of having an all-women competition in the NCAA. However, for some reason, the sport was scrapped in 1983.

THE RISE OF SUPERPOWERS

With the sports expansion of the league, basketball still stood out as the most popular sports in the NCAA as it became the battlefield for supremacy among schools, which resulted in the birth of rivalries in the NCAA. These rivalries became inevitable as the member-schools intensified the competition level from academic to sports. Before the present day Ateneo - La Salle and San Beda – Letran rivalries, San Beda and Ateneo became the crowd’s favorite match-up as their race towards supremacy heightened every season. With Ateneo reaping 14 championships while San Beda had 11 titles, these rivals have topped the rest of the NCAA teams in the late 70’s.

Also before La Salle became a major threat in basketball in the UAAP, they were once dominating the NCAA football tournament in the late 60’s. And as the Taft-based squad fortified their basketball squad, they have found Letran as their major competitor in the championship race as both squads had five basketball championship apiece in 1972 NCAA season.

THE DARK AGES

“everybody falls on the first time.” The NCAA did suffer with its chaotic system and inaccurate rules in its early years. Worse, the advent of World War II forced the league to impede its 17 year existence with a five-year halt from 1942 to 1946. But with signs of recovery among member schools, the league reopened I 1947 after the war.

However, he post-war NCAA struggled with its new enemy – interschool hooliganism. Intense rivalries turned into violentaftermath and high decibel exchanges of boos turned into physical attacks, mid-game litter barrage and riots marred the games as rival school closed the curtains with a tragic finale.

The 1962 NCAA season was suspended due to uncontrolled violence every game. Officials thought that it would be the last of the violence that have happened throughout the years but hostility continued in the early 70’s with more intense clashes and chaos.

After losing the championship in 1977, the breaking point finally reached Ateneo’s nerves as they decided to withdraw from NCAA. Game three of the Ateneo-San Beda championship match was held in close doors with no crowds and the only sounds heard on television were the ball. ‘Lo and behold, Ateneo left the NCAA and, afterwards, entered the UAAP after the disheartening loss against the Chito Loyzaga-led San Beda team.

Three years after, La Salle and Letran got into a bitter ending of their rivalry. This prompted La Salle to literally abandon both the NCAA and its championship match against Letran due to ceaseless violence. Letran was banned from NCAA after being found guilty of starting the fight in August 17, 1980 incident. But after meeting all requirements of the league, the NCAA board lifted the suspension and allowed the Intramuros-based squad to compete in the 1981 season.

In 1983, San Beda bolted NCAA reasoning out that the institution will focus on school-based sports activities like Intramurals. But many speculated that the move was because of the continuous violence that that marred the league. The Mendiola-based squad settled themselves and friendship games with La Salle.

The exit of the three chartered members have left a major blow to the then, 59-year-old NCAA, leaving them with only four teams, namely Letran, San Sebastian, JRU and Mapua Institute of Technology. As the higher NCAA officials and prominent people suggested to abolish the NCAA, most daily publications tagged the NCAA as “an ironic journey from sports to violence”

NEVER SAY DIE!

The dark ages of the NCAA may have tainted the glorious years of the past but great leagues with strong foundation never wear-out. The four remaining teams reconstructed the long lost principles of the league: to foster a healthy school spirit within the respective member colleges; and to help develop athletes.

Different measures, like patrolling the behavior of the crowd by the respective faculties of the member schools, were implemented as part of the remedy to ensure the security during the NCAA games. Moreover, joint practices of cheerleaders were also conducted to promote inter-school camaraderie. These simple steps and a lot more had helped the league to recover as more teams were lured and encouraged to reestablish it.

Following the debut NCAA of Perpetual Help College of Rizal in 1984, Trinity College joined the league to form a six-team NCAA roster. But in 1986, Trinity College soon left the league while San Beda returned back to action with a spirit of reconciliation.

The NCAA further expanded by extending its hands to some taft-based schools by making Philippine Christian University(PCU) and College of St. Benilde as probationary members in 1996 and 1998, respectively. The NCAA Policy board finally admitted PCU as a regular member in 1999, while, CSB became the first school to win the championship trophy under probationary status in 2000.

Currently with eight member schools, a total of 16 schools have been part of the 81-year-old NCAA namely La Salle, San Beda, Ateneo, UP, UST, San Vicente de Paul, UM, NU, Letran, Mapua, JRU, Trinity College, UPHDS, San Sebastian, PCU and CSB.

As the NCAA entered the new millennium, modernization became the hot talk of the league in expanding its sport influences. The 2002-2003 host school, San Beda, made a move that switched the television coverage of NCAA games from MCI group to media giant ABS-CBN in March 18, 2002, unlike MCI group(IBC),which only covered the final four basketball games, the NCAA-ABS-CBN five-year contract enabled all NCAA basketball games, to be aired at Studio 23

Reliving the glorious past

From a simple athletic organization in 1924, the NCAA moved mountains and became the home of great athletes and prominent people of today. Generation by generation, the NCAA will always be remembered as the battle that has been won, the home that has been grown, and athletes have been part of.

Let the elder reminisce their glorious past and the youth cherish what has been made for them. The rich tradition of the NCAA will live on and the blazing school spirits of every student will last until the end of time.

Somebody told me during that infamous riot in 1980, Danding C. brought in goons from Tarlac to beat up the Letranites. After that episode, La Salle had to wait for 6 years before the UAAP admitted the school, kasi baka malipat yung gulo sa UAAP, and with Ateneo already in the league.


To put that in perspective, Danding had to bring in the goons from Tarlac to battle the "school-bred goons" of Letran. La Salle "goons" were no match to the "battle-hardened" goon-squads of Letran.

This was also the time when Letran was banned from the NCAA for starting the riots.

It's a sad narrative of how a once respected institution has declined througout the years because of "barbarian invasion". These thugs who managed to enter Letran may be few, but they have done a great deal to tarnish the school's once prestigious reputation.

Where did you get this story? I was there at the RMC during the La Salle-Letran game and there was no bloody game, as you would put it. Danding was never at the RMC during that game.

About the spark plug thing, it was thrown by a person in red & blue jacket towards the La Salle bench.

UST in w/c i came from when i was still in college is not a Level IV in PAASCU. hindi naman yun ang priority nila eh.

Dapat lang na nasa Level III ang PCU and JRU coz if not they are just a university for nothing kung hindi nila ma-achieve. Letran is just a college and beginning to form under one system INTRAMUROS-CALAMBA-BATAAN.
Alam mo din siguro kung ano mga requirements to achieve every Level sa PAASCU.

Where did you get this story? I was there at the RMC during the La Salle-Letran game and there was no bloody game, as you would put it. Danding was never at the RMC during that game.

About the spark plug thing, it was thrown by a person in red & blue jacket towards the La Salle bench.
