FORMER PBA players will try to rekindle their glory days when they see action in the Total-Filoil-Flying V Homegrown Cup starting on March 18 at the San Juan Coliseum.
Among the big names who have already confirmed their participation in this unique tournament are Samboy Lim of San Miguel, coaches Yeng Guiao and Ronnie Magsanoc of the UP Fighting Maroons, Ateneo’s Steve Watson and Fritz Gaston, San Beda’s Frankie Lim, Boybits Victoria and Ralph Rivera, and FEU’s Glenn Capacio.
"This noble basketball tournament will not only give former PBA stars the chance to reminisce their hardcourt exploits but also help their alma mater raise funds," said league commissioner Virgil Villavicencio during yesterday’s press conference at the Kamayan Restaurant in Edsa.
Also present were organizing committee chairman David Dualand, Filoil-Flying V president Francisco Pasicolan and project head Anthony Suntay.
The Homegrown Cup, according to Villavicencio, is an expanded version of the Ateneo-La Salle showdown held last year.
And to heighten the interest of basketball fanatics, the organizers have decided to add San Beda, University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University and Letran College in the tournament.
Villavicencio is also entertaining the idea of inviting University of the East, Adamson and University of Santo Tomas.
"This year’s staging will be more exciting with the participation of high school teams," said Dualan. "Filoil-Flying V believes in developing the youth and included the high school division to showcase future stars."
Dualan also said that cash prizes of R80,000 (champion) and P40,000 (runnerup) will be awarded in the alumni and high school divisions.
The coaches in the All-Star division are Chito Narvasa (Ateneo), Danny Gavieres (FEU), Lim Eng Beng (La Salle), Itoy Esguerra (Letran), Chito Loyzaga (San Beda) and Raymund Celis (UP) while coaches in the high school team are Michael Ray Jarin (Ateneo), Sebastian De Vera (FEU), Mon Amador (La Salle), Elmer Latonio (Letran), Edmundo Badolato (San Beda) and Patrick Aquino (UP). – Jean MALANUM
