First of all, the Japanese are really cool hiring a COBOL programmer who doesn't know how to program in COBOL. :D
Second, I think nasa retirement home na halos lahat ng COBOL programmers these days. :D

@jerkyjerk24
I used cobol 12 yrs ago, syntax is easy it's all english-like commands.
Focus in your Program Logic Formulations skills and do pseudo-codes
before writing in Cobol codes. Just buy a good reference book about
Cobol.

Anyway goodluck to you jerkyjerk24, hope you make it all the way.

i know how to program in COBOL and CICS. Kaso COBOL 74 ang nahawakan ko that time samantalang 1999 na nun. It's pretty easy kaya don't worry. Mas maganda pa ***** kung ang mahahawakan mo yung COBOL 85 or yng Object Oriented na COBOL (baka sakali lang) since mas madali tong mga to.
Goodluck!

I used to do CICS COBOL in a mainframe environment. I also tried RM COBOL for RISC 6000 machines but mid-90s ko pa last ginamit ito. I'm one of those who are wondering how you got the job...

Mahal ang bayad sa mga COBOL programmers these days. Kasi nga jurassic language na ito kaya mahirap humanap ng marunong talaga dito. Usually, ginagamit pa ang COBOL ngayon sa ilang mga bangko. Mahirap at magastos kasi ang mag-convert ng entire company operations from COBOL to a newer platform. Ang kalimitang rationale ng mga company executives dito: "If it's not broken, why fix it?". Pati yung lumang CLIPPER meron pa ring gumagamit kahit obsolete na.

Just curious, what package were you offered? Putek, if it's good refer me too. I just need a refresher but I'm confident that I can still do COBOL programs.

This is true, sa current project ko ngayon migration from HP3000/Image mainframe to HP-UX/Oracle gagamitin pa rin yung Cobol Programs nila kasi marami and the usual reason, 'it's still working' a mediator program translates the HP/Image calls to Oracle/SQL calls.
I also learned that Unionbank is phasing out it's mainframe system replacing them by Sun/Solaris Servers with Oracle backend am not sure though kung pati Cobol Programs nila ay papalitan...

OT: Why go Sun/Solaris when you can go AMD/Intel/Linux at a much cheaper price?

Sad to say, like in our company, the management wants to keep a 'good image' to their clients assuring them that their information are secured using the best-named technologies :(. They say it's bad image if you datacenter is comprised of servers running in Linux, open source, can be hacked yada-yada...
To us techies it's the same, our office is a die-hard HP client (management decision) and the licensing cost for HP-UX Itanium is killing our budget..... sad but that's reality...sucks.

i used to program cobol back in the late 90's for a Japanese project. Ang cool nuon kasi may way para idisplay yung Kanji characters through cobol programs. ngayon, di na ko marunong mag cobol... =(

OT: well, i would say brainwashed by the 'marketing people', since and growth rate ng company is 20% plus for the past 6 years palagi silang nasa 'buying binge' like lately one manager was bragging about getting new SAN storages that can take snapshots of the 2TB database files in seconds so baka walang silbi na raw yung backup namin :bop: . ignoramus... our oracle databases are real-time, transactions are coming non-stop how can they assure that it's 100% snapshot of the opened files! our team is sticking to our own backup jobs.
gusto ko ngang sabihin na google is running their datacenters in linux clusters, with the huge hits they get every second...
