After 16 years and millions upon millions of albums sold, Garth Brooks has decided to end his business ties with Capitol Records. The only label that Brooks has ever called home, Capitol Nashville has distributed the mega country superstar since 1989, selling over 100 million records under the company’s name.

The terminated licensing agreement gave Capitol Records exclusive license to Brooks’s recordings. According to the Capitol Nashville press release, Capitol paid no compensation to dissolve the contract, and Brooks didn’t seek any.

The two parties parted by mutual agreement and remain on good terms. “For nearly two decades, Capitol Nashville has had an extraordinary and fruitful relationship with Garth,” Capitol Nashville president and CEO Mike Dungan commented in a statement. “We wish him all the best for the future.”

Though Brooks officially retired from music in 2000, he released his last album, Scarecrow, in 2001. Brooks recently re-entered the gossip mill when he proposed to long-time girlfriend Trisha Yearwood at the Legends in Bronze event last month.

Garth Brooks' hit Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House took on a new meaning Wednesday night when the country singer proposed to fellow crooner Trisha Yearwood in front of 7,000 fans at a ceremony unveiling bronze statues of country legends. He went on stage at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace to unveil his statue, dropped on one knee and popped the question. When Yearwood said yes, the Bakersfield, Calif., crowd went nuts.
It will be the third marriage for Yearwood and the second for Brooks, whose union with wife Sandy, with whom he has three daughters, ended in 2001.

According to People, Yearwood, 40, and Brooks, 43, took their relationship public when Brooks put his arm around her at a March 2002 memorial service for songwriter Harlan Howard in Nashville.

Faith Hill, one of contemporary country music’s reigning queens, is securing her place on the throne. “Mississippi Girl,” Hill’s first single in nearly two years, also happened to become the singer’s highest chart debut earlier this month. The video for the song will almost certainly make a strong showing as well; see it debut this Thursday, May 26th, on Country Music Television’s Top 20 Countdown.

Hill can in part thank Adam Schoenfield and Big & Rich’s John Rich, who penned the music and lyrics for “Mississippi Girl,” for its success, not such a bad way to launch a new album. Not having such a bad year himself, Rich has contributed at least one other track to Hill’s newest effort, according to rumour.

“Music is, and always should be, about evoking an emotion or expressing a passion or feeling, and this song does just that for me,” says Hill about “Mississippi Girl.” “It’s easier for me to express what’s in my heart by telling people to listen to what I sing, rather than to what I say.”

Fireflies, the full-length from which “Mississippi Girl” is taken, will hit shelves across the continent in two months time. Aimed for release on August 2nd through Warner Bros., Fireflies is the follow-up to Cry, released back in October 2002.

Would it be Tim McGraw, Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Keith Urban or Kenny Chesney? The winner of the 40th annual Academy of Country Music Entertainer Of The Year Award is Renee Zellweger's new husband, Kenny Chesney.

Wearing a black cowboy hat and a dark blue dress shirt to accept his award, Chesney said:

I go on stage every night at 9:15, but our show starts at 2:30 in the afternoon because all the fans are out there in the parking lot, partying and got our music cranked up. And I want to thank ya'll.
Chesney focused his kudos on his fans rather than his new wife in his acceptance speach.

Eight days ago he and Zellweger were together on the Caribbean island of St. John. On Tuesday night, Renee was not able to join her new husband, as she is busy working on a new movie.

Carrie Underwood collects her first No. 1 in Billboard, joining a long list of chart-topping "American Idol" competitors. Her "Inside Your Heaven" / "Independence Day" (Arista) makes a premature debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles Sales chart, based solely on street date violations. Those same infringements bring Underwood onto the Singles Sales chart at No. 5 (This chart was formerly known as Hot 100 Singles Sales, but since it also feeds the Pop 100, it was appropriate to change the name).

Underwood is the ninth "Idol" singer to earn a Billboard No. 1 as a solo performer, following Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Kimberley Locke, Josh Gracin, William Hung, Fantasia and Diana DeGarmo.

I've been meaning to explore about this genre for years. There are a lot of county styles to choose from: Americana, folk-rock/country, bluegrass, country gospel, honky tonk, etc.

My favorite artists that fall into this miraculous genre: Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, CSNY, The Byrds' later years, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan

By Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.

A little more than a month after becoming the fourth winner of "American Idol," Carrie Underwood has the country's top single. "Inside Your Heaven," a Desmond Child-written song the country-leaning singer performed during her final week of competition on the Fox series, debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100.

Underwood is only the third artist to bow in the top slot since chart policy changed in 1998 to allow airplay-only tracks on the Hot 100, a move that made it much harder for any title to debut at No. 1. And it's a feat only "Idol" contestants have been able to achieve with largely sales-driven success. Underwood's triumph follows in the footsteps of second season runner-up Clay Aiken's "This Is the Night" in 2003 and third-season winner Fantasia "I Believe" in 2004.

"Inside Your Heaven" also debuts at No. 1 on the Pop 100, where Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" falls to No. 4 after eight weeks on top. To make way for Underwood's debut on the Hot 100, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" drops to No. 2, but retains its bullet due to continued growth. The cut also improves its stand on the Pop 100, advancing 3-2, and holds onto its No. 1 post on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart" falls 3-4 on the Hot 100, but retains its bullet, and remains No. 1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart for a second week. Underwood's single is that chart's highest debut at No. 4.

Moving into the Hot 100's top 10 this week is Fat Joe's "Get It Poppin'" featuring Nelly with a 16-10 move. As reported yesterday, Joe's album "All or Nothing" (Terror Squad/Atlantic) bows this week at No. 6 on The Billboard 200.

Among the cuts making big Hot 100 gains this week is Rihanna's debut single "Pon De Replay," which bolts 30-13 and is the chart's greatest airplay gainer. Her debut album, "Music of the Sun," will be released Aug. 16 by SRP/Def Jam.

The Foo Fighters, who notch a No. 2 Billboard 200 debut this week for their two-disc "In Your Honor" (Roswell/Capitol), jump 37-18 with the single "Best of You," while Brad Paisley has the Hot 100's top debut with "Alcohol" at No. 89. Also new to the list are SheDaisy's "Don't Worry 'Bout a Thing" (No. 90), Brooks & Dunn's "Play Something Country" (No. 92), Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" (No. 93) and Natasha Bedingfield's "These Words" (No. 100).

On the Hot Country Songs chart, Rascal Flatts' "Fast Cars and Freedom" advances 2-1 as Keith Urban's "Making Memories of Us" falls to No. 2 after five weeks on top. That chart's top debut is George Strait's "Texas" at No. 50, while Underwood's "Inside" bows at No. 59.

Seether's "Remedy" is the No. 1 title on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart for a second week, while Weezer's "Beverly Hills" moves 2-1 to take over the lead on the Modern Rock list as Nine Inch Nails' "The Hand That Feeds" falls to No. 2 after five weeks in the pole position.

On Billboard's Adult Contemporary list, first "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" is No. 1 for a 17th consecutive week. On the Hot 100, the song drops 36-42, while her song "Since U Been Gone" drops 9-12 and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" holds steady at No. 6.

I think the original poster didn't actually mean that those are the only country music artists around. Sheeeesh. Some people just don't know how to understand.

I'm not so sure about your inclusion of bob dyan. dylan's body of work may be encompassing (from folk to blues to rock to country) but dylan is definitely more of a folk troubador. notwithstanding the crossover artists like mary chapin carpenter, gillian welch, nanci griffith, etc... country and folk are not the same genres.

Associated Press

Wellington, New Zealand — Canadian country music star Shania Twain has won permission to build a mansion and other buildings on her New Zealand sheep farm, despite complaints that the complex would not blend in with the landscape, an official said Wednesday.

Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the development -- including a large house with attached garage, two guest cottages and ancillary structures -- on their alpine ranch, Motatapu Station, on South Island, planning commissioner Trevor Shiels said in a report Wednesday.

Twain and her husband Robert “Mutt” Lange applied for permission to build the development last year but met with staunch opposition from locals who said the diamond-shaped complex would be visible for miles.

In its objections to the plans, the Upper Clutha Environmental Society said people should be stopped from “slamming mansions onto leasehold land.”

“It doesn't matter that it's Shania Twain,” said society president Julian Hayward last year. “We get a lot of people trying to put buildings in inappropriate locations and we object to all of them.”

Nevertheless, the local council approved the development, subject to 17 conditions, Shiels said.

Among the conditions, Twain must immediately replace any dying plant or tree, provide a water supply for fire fighting and agree to plant the same mountain grasses as those growing on surrounding land so that the complex blends in with the landscape.

There was no word on whether Twain and Lange would agree to the conditions and opponents of the plan were not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

Last year Twain and Lange won approval to lease Motatapu Station -- 24,700 hectares of rugged and scenic farmland -- for 33 years with automatic renewal rights. The pastoral leasehold farm land near the tourist town of Wanaka cost them $18.5-million.

Wanaka is about 800 kilometres southwest of the capital, Wellington.

Hick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Hick (or country hick) is a derisive term for a person from a rural area.

Popular etymology says the term derives from hickory, and first applied to rural school teachers who continued to punish their charges with hickory sticks long after progressive urban school districts had banned or at least seriously restricted corporal punishment. The Oxford English Dictionary says it was "by-form" of the personal name Richard (like ****) and Hob (like Bob) for Robert.

"Hicks" have sometimes been seen, and often been portrayed in popular media, as easy marks for sophisticated urbanites. However, at times this can be turned to the advantage of an apparent hick who is more sophisticated than he appears, which is a frequent basis for a confidence game operation.

A famous usage of the term comes from the 1942 film Yankee Doodle Dandy which features the Variety headline "STIX NIX HIX PIX", which was a story about how movies portarying rural-dwellers as hicks were, unsurprisingly, unpopular in such areas ("the sticks"). Stereotypes of hicks in the popular mind are often derived from such motion pictures as The Egg and I, featuring the first screen appearance of the hick characters Ma and Pa Kettle. The Beverly Hillbillies were television hicks, although many feel that they, particularly Granny, often in the final analysis got the better of their nemesis, Mrs. Drysdale, and were more mentally stable than the repressed and effete Miss Jane Hathaway, banker Drysdale's secretary.

Hicks tend to be distinguished by a lack of sophistication deriving from their ruralness. Hence, the term is not exactly synonymous with white trash, nor has it been claimed with pride as has the similar redneck. Opponents of "political correctness" often complain that "hicks" continue as almost the only group that can be ridiculed and sterotyped with impunity.

Former NBA player Larry Bird often describes himself, with pride, as "A hick from French Lick".

Hill is iTunes half-billionth download.

By Neil Haislop

NASHVILLE, TN Friday Jul.22.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- What do you think the odds were for any artist to become iTunes half-billionth download?

Well Faith Hill won that distinction when her single "Mississippi Girl" became the iTunes download No. 500,000,000. The online shopper that downloaded Faith's tune is Amy Greer from Lafayette, Indiana earning her a jackpot of gifts from Apple including 10 iPods, a 10,000-song gift card, and an all expenses paid trip for her and three friends to see Coldplay in concert (did anybody ask her if she'd rather see Faith Hill in concert?).

Faith Hill has sold nearly 30 million records worldwide since her arrival on the Country scene in 1993. Much of that commercial success came from the Country-to-pop crossover hits she recorded between 1999 and 2002. After taking a few years off from recording, the Mississippi native is back on the charts with an album that takes Hill back to her Country roots. The new CD is called Fireflies.

"Mississippi Girl" was the first single released from Faith Hill's latest album Fireflies. The autobiographical song was written by John Rich, a former member of Lonestar. Rich is now one-half of the new Country duo Big and Rich. Faith explains what inspired John to write the track.

"John Rich, he does a better job at telling a story than I do, and he said he basically stalked me for about two weeks because he had this image of me," she said. "I'm not sure exactly what it was, maybe that I was a monster or something. But he said after spending time [with me], he thought everyone should know the story of my life."

"Mississippi Girl" entered Billboard's Country Singles chart at Number 27 to become the highest debut of Hill's career. It took only nine weeks to reach the Top 5 on that list.

McGraw Hill Soul2Soul tour 150.jpg
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
Faith and her husband, Country star Tim McGraw, are raising three young daughters while trying to juggle the demands of their busy careers. But, Faith says the long delay of her new album was due to artistic reasons.

"It was because of a songwriter by the name of Lori McKenna who has the title track on the album Fireflies, and a couple of other ones that are on the album." she said. "I just heard a song of hers and said 'I have to hear everything she's ever written.' [I] included it and went back in and delayed the process, but it was well, well worth it."

Fireflies sold 329,000 copies its first week of release and debuted at Number One on both the Country Albums and all-genre Billboard 200 charts. Her previous two albums, 1999's Breathe and 2002's Cry, also entered in the top spot on both charts. Faith describes her reaction to the success of Fireflies.

"I feel relieved because I feel great about this album," she said. "It's a labor of love. It's very acoustic and rootsy, and I'm just excited. I can't wait to get out and play it.

Faith has no tour plans set for 2005, but she recently performed two concerts in Los Angeles, which marked her first shows there since 2000. The concerts were taped for an upcoming television special that will air November 23.

The latest single from Fireflies is a duet Faith recorded with her husband called "Like We Never Loved At All."

Premiere of “Shania: A Life in Eight Albums” Announced

Sudbury – For a few months last summer the City of Greater Sudbury and parts of Northern Ontario were transformed into Hollywood North with the filming of “Shania: A Life in Eight Albums.” Communities watched as local businesses were transformed into period locations for the film, local residents working as extras were dressed up in classic 80’s garb, and we all got an inside look at the exciting world of filmmaking.

Recently, CBC Television officially announced that the airdate for the two-hour CBC Big Ticket film-for-television will be Monday November 7th at 8:00 pm. “Shania” tells the inspiring rags-to-riches story of one Canada's most beloved and successful female artists of all time featuring Meredith Henderson (The Adventures of Shirley Holmes, MythQuest) starring in the lead role of megastar Shania Twain.

“To date, this was the biggest production we’ve seen here in Sudbury and the community delivered on every level” says Mark Palumbo, President of Music and Film in Motion. “Working on the “Shania” project was a huge step forward in the development of the film industry here in the North, illustrating that we are ready and able to support this new and exciting industry.”

”Shania” depicts the superstar's early years and her struggle for stardom. The drama takes viewers on a compelling journey spanning two decades, beginning in 1973 with a gangly eight-year-old known as Elly (Reva Timbers) belting out songs in Northern Ontario bars for tips, continuing with a determined teenager (Shenae Grimes) making her own way to Toronto for an appearance on The Tommy Hunter Show, to an under-age teen (Meredith Henderson) dragging a Sudbury bar band into the limelight. “Shania” then follows Eilleen Twain to Nashville where she finds a cut-throat industry wanting only her voice - not her music. Finally, we see Eilleen on the cusp of transforming into one of the world's most celebrated stars when she gets a fateful call from renowned music producer Mutt Lange.

The film also features Megan Follows as Shania's mother Sharon Twain; Eric Schweig as her adoptive father Jerry; Darrell Dennis as one of her early mentors, symphony conductor John Kim Bell and Gordon Tootoosis as her beloved grandfather, who introduces her to the richness of First Nations' music, traditions and ceremony.

“Music and Film in Motion is proud to have been a part of bringing the “Shania” project here to the North” Palumbo states. “Both on and off screen this production was assisted through the support and hard work of many of our areas finest talents in the film and television industry. We encourage everyone to watch the program; a true champion of what Northern Ontario has to offer.”

“Shania: A Life in Eight Albums” airs on CBC Monday November 7th at 8:00 pm and was produced by Barna-Alper Productions in association with CBC Television and the W Network.

*bump*

Just got Garth's new box set. Not bad, not bad at all. It comes with a disc with 11 previously unreleased tracks.

Plus an "all-access" DVD which is actually pretty useless.

Other than that it has his last 2 studio albums, Sevens and Scarecrow, plus the Double Live Disc set with one of two new album covers.

The fifth season of the TV series "American Idol" is less than a couple of months away, but this week the focus is on the winner of the fourth season of the popular singing competition.

Carrie Underwood is the first of the four "American Idols" to be No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. Her "Some Hearts" (Arista) enters that chart on top. Second season contestant Josh Gracin has had three top five hits on Hot Country Singles, and his self-titled album peaked at No. 2 on Top Country Albums.

On The Billboard 200, Underwood debuts at No. 2. How does this stack up against the three previous "Idol" winners' debut albums? Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful" debuted at No. 1 the week of May 3, 2003. Ruben Studdard's "Soulful" opened at No. 1 the week of Dec. 27, 2003. And Fantasia's "Free Yourself" bowed at No. 8 the week of Dec. 11. 2004.

NASHVILLE, TN Tuesday Dec.27.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- The Muskogee, Oklahoma Phoenix newspaper has named Carrie Underwood the "2005 Oklahoman of the Year."

"Carrie Underwood has the whole package," according to Louisa McCune, editor in chief of Oklahoma Today.

"When we're assessing candidates, we look for someone who has accomplished something phenomenal in the past year. The next thing we ask ourselves is, does this person encompass all that makes this state great?"

"Carrie obviously had what it took," McCune said.

I DO! Sadly, country music is not popular here in the Philippines. :mecry:

The best for me is Rascall Flatts' God Bless the Broken Road and Dixie Chicks' I Believe in Love. Have yet to discover one from Carrie Underwood's new album.

What are your favorite country songs?

Favorite ko si Lyle Lovett :) He just has that awsome, presence when he sings that you just can't not listen to him. He writes some of the best, most witty lyrics I've ever heard.

Favorite Album: "Lyle Lovett and His Large Band"
Favorite Song: "Here I Am" (musically and lyrically awsome :p)

NASHVILLE, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The lineup for next month's Country Music Association Awards program in Nashville has been bolstered with the addition of Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow.

The CMA said Monday that Crow and Gill would join hosts Brooks & Dunn in a performance of "Building Bridges" on the Nov. 6 live telecast.

John Rich of Big & Rich has been added to Gretchen Wilson's number "Come to Bed," a song he co-wrote.

The highlight of the gala will be the induction of the 2006 class of the Country Music Hall of Fame. The new members include George Strait, Sonny James and producer Harold Bradley. Kris Kristofferson will introduce the honorees.

The Philippines radio industry remains to be a Country-free industry. Although CHR and AC stations are currently including new country artists in their playlist, not a single station has ever cashed in on investing a new country FM station. Probably it’s the salability of the format, ABC tried to do Hispanic format with Rio 106 in early 2000, but if format flopped rather than format flipped. The Philippines though have good country singers – Freddie Aguiler is a pillar in the Philippine country music scene.

Honestly, outside the USA, country music is a tough sell.

From www.radiojingles.co.nr (http://www.freewebs.com/novellware/index.htm)site manager

I second to that, what used to be just a niche market in the U.S. now goes mainstream. Still the largest and the most successful radio format in America, across all types of radio, internet, terrestrial, satellite and HD -- is News/talk, next is AC, CHR, and Country comes to fourth.

country radio format however has almost captured the AC market, largely because, AC in the U.S. (although not all) is starting to make musical crossover. AC stations now currently Gwen stefani, Beyonce and other Urban artists.

What's so interesting about country music, is that much of the writing and arrangement are made very good. While most themes that embrace RNB, rock and hiphop revolve around sex, breakup, violence and hatred, most country songs are built on positive messages, specially love and friendship, family and even Christianism.

We are hopeful here at Radio Jingles, that Filipino artists and bands will start to embrace this genre as more and more Pinoys are beginning to like this genre, especially the new ones. This would be a good shift from the usual pop rock and acoustic sounds we hear today by most bands.

We would also encourage radio stations, especially the AC ones: DWRR, iFM, starFM, yesFM to increase rotation of country songs in their playlist. I know there are a lot of country artists that are starting to flock the in-lays of CD samplers, so why wont we start playing them as well.

Is Country music going to be the next RNB in the Philippines?
