Our group in the office was tasked to render a presentation which will compete with the presentations of the other groups. No one wanted to lead, and with that kind of situation, nothing gets done because no order is established and no decisions are made. I cannot let our group lose face with a so-so presentation if we are able to come up with any presentation at all. I had a lot of reports to render, so I took the time after office (up to midnight) to write a script and a concept and presented it to the group the next day. They loved it! We won first place of course! : )

I am my ownself. I make decisions and create my own superpower technique of wanting to be heard and speak my mind. I am now leading a team that conceptualizes unique concepts for a show. The irony of it all is that to lead and stand up for a cause is tantamount to your willingness to listen and compromise. In the business of everything unique rates, pitching for your ideas, you have to be a forward-thinker and above all, well-read. My fellow's ideas were better than mine, i didn't mind because the minute your pride took over, you are nothing but a second best.

it was december last year when our company formed groups that will present for our christmas party..it's been almost a week since our HR released the list of members for each group...i was so concerned with the time we are wasting back then so i decided to send one friendly email to all the members of my group seeking suggestions as to how we want to go about our presentation..when no one seemed to respond to my first email..i took the liberty of setting our first group meeting to basically brainstorm for the concept..it was pretty hard at first but eventually i was able to lead the group well..everybody in our group was soooooo cooperative..each has the initiative to work for the team..i believe it paid sooo well coz we bagged the 1st prize...it was a night to remember for us..we're hugging each other..dancin' like crazy..singing and partyin all night...and best of all we established friendships beyond the typical office relationship until now.. *okay*

I was the only one in my barkada left without a date a few days before our highschool prom. My friends panicked for me and desperately tried everything to hook me up with whomever is still available. So when this guy asked me to be his date, my friends told me to accept the invitation despite knowing that the only reason he asked me was to 'cover up' his homosexual profile. "It's better than to have no date and besides you have no other option" they insisted. I, however, refused to believe that there is no alternative and won't settle for my 2nd best option so i decided to take matters into my own hand. I finally mustered enough courage to ask my older brother's bestfriend, who happened to be my longtime crush, to be my date and he said yes :)

In a state university like ours, not a single centavo should be collected from the students. However, our college, which is in fact should be training future watchdogs of society has been mastering their mysterious misdemeanors. Everytime they want to make paskikat they will send Mass Communication students like in a cheering competition where one super sipsip student is involved. Now, when a student didn’t attend those not “important” events, they will ask the student to pay- for sanction. Like the last was when they were totaling students’ sanctions some even came close to paying not just an amount but at least four books. What is this?

First that is strictly illegal. But my poor batchmates who’s been an accessory to the crime of our sipsip student president can hardly do anything. Clearly, freedom of expression is obstructed in the College of Mass Communication. One time, when sipsip president came to our classroom to collect sanctions, I stood up and raised my voice- our point. With what has transpired, I became the feast of everyone’s orbs in the office (faculty). Why shouldn’t they? They’re all thinking of their profitable sidelines.

From then on, I was treated unfairly. One time a staff became the office’s official sacrificial lamb. Since all of them are more than aloof to me, one time professors made a story about me saying that I insulted the sacrificial lamb employee’s husband which is not true.

Monday after that, the sacrificial lamb was so mad at me. She was devilishly staring at me. As soon as I went out from the office, she screamed at me, so in return I also yelled at her. This poor woman came out of the office and rushed to me when I was about to go downstairs. She screamed bad words and hitted me with a fan several times. As for me, I’ve spanked her in her left shoulder.

Because of this, the whole faculty already prepared their script and submitted it to the Office of Student Affairs. I was suspended. But just they thought I was really suspended, little did they know I was just having my vacation. I appealed to the University President and responded to my favor. The office of the president lifted the suspension, tasked the office of student’s affairs and the college of mass communication to give all assistance I need and more than that, to make for all I missed. Lovely isn’t it?

So needless to say, the diva will be back on Monday, February 13, 2006.

Tell us about a time you didn't settle for second -- when you dug in and took the lead!

When I started working here in Manila for a film director, my gay best friend was already Assistant Director and I was assigned under him to be his script girl. I have always been a movie buff and it was a dream come true for me to be able to work in the movies so I was assertive and I tried so hard to be efficient and of course, to have fun. My friend and I started to drift apart until he was discovered to be spreading bad rumors about a collegue of ours that the director decided to sack him. I was asked to take over and my friend took it badly that he decided to go to the States. Years later, I got a call from him and he apologized because admittedly he told me that I was beginning to be a threat to his job and I told him that whatever I did with the job, it was because he taught me everything I knew and without his guidance, I wouldn't have had an inkling on how to do it right. Now, we have gone our separate ways but that incident taught us the value of friendship.

My friends and I were new in the marketing block (we came fron the finance section <due to some mixup> ). Anyway, since we're new it seems like not all of our blockmates were really paying attention when we report etc. IT was a little rough on our side since we dont know our new blockmates that well.

There was this one time when, we needed to have a sales presentation for our class. I said to myself that since we're going to prepare something nice, we might as well give our bestest best. ANd so, weeks before the presentation, I prepared some of the stuff we need. I made the initial plans (the works! flow of presentation, visual aids, audio, attire, brochures, ) I told my groupmates that we HAVE to do our best in this presentation, not only for ourselves but to also to show our classmates that we can be really good. that we are good. a few days before the presentation, I called for a group meeting so that we can have a run through with our presentation.
I believe that keeping the team together and listening to each team member's opinion is important. We are not four persons in the group, all four of us are one.

ALL the hard work paid of, Our group got the highest score in the class ( nothing less than perfect! :) ). It sure made our day. from that day on, Our group had always been number 1. and what really keeps me happy is that they always pay attention when we present something in class. that alone, is more than enough :)

it was our christmas party and we had a very short participation for the event, but so happen for some unavoidable circumstances, the lead role was absent, although i was in a minor role (or extra lang) took up the the major role without practice and was able to get the audience attention even if i was a new employee at the company. We turned out to be on the 2nd place for the whole office. Not bad for a person without any idea on the role... i guess we we are lucky that he main role is absent! hehehe

We had a team building weekend in subic where our entire group of almost 50 people was given a difficult task to finish in as less time as possible. It was a task that would require everyone's cooperation and deep concentration plus a strategy to do it. Each person has a different idea, everyone was talking at the same time, so nothing really gets heard and done. I volunteered to lead the group so we can finish our task even though some of the participants were actually my bosses. Through my being the leader and sort of traffic cop and cheerer at the same time, we were able to finish the task in a record 28 minutes, much shorter than the other departments in our company who had the same task when they had their teambuilding before us.

I've always had the task of getting the work done. And even if it would always be a group work, I end up getting the work done all by myself. But when school productions came, I'm a working Mass Communication student by the way, I have to find a way, to make them work so that they would be able to learn something, and not just depend on me. So it happened one time, on a certain radio production rehearsal, that they didn't know what to do, even if the task has been assigned early on. So what I did was, maintain my composure, just sat, and didn't talk. For me, it was one time that I have to not talk. Because if I start saying something, my tears will flow, because of anger. So I didn't talk, and they started moving. After that, I told them. That being the leader doesn't mean you have to do everything, or it's an individual thing. Being a leader means letting your people coordinate. And that's why until now, I still take the lead, but I don't do the work alone.:D

In an “Inventor’s Convention” involving students from different schools, the participants were grouped and the teams were tasked to create a miniature house from popsicle sticks and glue for a limited time.

With no one standing as leader for our group, we were stuck to discussing conflicting and bizaare ideas that nothing was really accomplished.

Taking up to the challenge, I assumed leadership and explained that we really had no time left for the “great” ideas everybody had; so in agreement to my suggestion, the group created the simplest house miniature: a four-walled box with attached roof on top and some door and window openings to make it look more like a house.

The group seemed pleased with the project finished but was quite intimidated with the other groups’ work: houses with 2-3 storeys, 2 houses incorporated as one and other houses with complicated designs.

As the leader of the group, I presented our work and explained what our house really was: simple in the outside but high-tech in the inside with 2 levels more below the ground to accommodate leisure rooms, swimming pool and a gym; advanced security features; and, independent power supply.

Finally, the panel of judges awarded our work as the best house, with special mention to my great presentation.

It was the last christmas of our college lives so we suggested to have a christmas party. I took the liberty of planning our christmas party. With the help of my friends, we were able to collect funds, but prizes for games, food and utensils. The party was a blast and everybody enjoyed and it ended 4 a.m. with everybody having something to bring home. Ever since, my friends contact me to set up events (reunions, outings, movies, bowling, even their own birthday parties).

Ours was an Oral Interpretation class, similar to a theater class but not quite because it involved breaking theatrical rules and boundaries and interpreting pieces in the most creative but meaningful manner one could think of, and during our class final exam, we were divided into two groups that would have two separate final exam presentations wherein one group would be watching and critiquing while the other would be presenting and vice-versa.

Each and every single group member would be involved in both logistics and the acting itself and I remember all of us panicking because it was barely a week before the presentation and we still have yet to think of a concept for our chosen piece.

It was a bad idea that our group had no official leader and was already in a state of chaos as some were bickering, some were focusing on things other than what was at hand, while some were simply doing things on their own and not coordinating with the others.

With the pressing concern of not being able to accomplish anything in the soonest time possible, I knew I had to take the lead or at least the initiative of coordinating my group mates and getting the preparations running, so, with also a sudden stroke of luck of managing to th ink of a complete concept, I called on everyone's attention and didn't just explain, I literally mapped out everything that should be done - who's going to be in charge of this and that, what should be bought, etc.

Everything went on as planned and it was only after the successful presentation that I found out that those who were in charge of submitting a production book wrote that for the designated roles and responsibilities of members, I was the overall leader. =)

It was so sad for me to see that those who were in our top 5 when I was in elementary were not really deserving to be included on the top list. They were just on top since their mothers are close to the teachers or trying to be close to the teachers by bringing foods in school or donating a big amount of money for school activities and projects, while our top 1 was a daughter of our school principal. One day during our exams, i've seen our top 1 cheating and asking for answers to her seatmates. Since my other classmates were also complaining it , i had the courage to tell our exam proctor that she was cheating. I told her with a loud voice: "Ma'am si K (initial) nangongopya po!" She couldn't believe it at all and maybe even has a doubt on me but later on my other classmates also complained and insisted that i'm telling the truth..

Believe it or not, it was during my pre-school graduation when I had my first realization of the urge to see my parents as happy as those who had kids graduating with academic recognitions as before, I was never really the type who would go for the honor standing, much less, get high grades.

When I entered primary school, the urge intensified and reached a personal level upon seeing beautiful, kind and intelligent female classmates praised and admired highly by almost everybody in school.

I never considered it jealousy when I resolved to have those girls as my inspiration in transforming myself academically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. That proved effective as, during the release of the outstanding students for the first quarter, I was at the top ten.

Eventually, as years passed, I never stopped until I was able to finally attend the recognition day with first, certificates to be received and then finally, medallions to be worn.

Though I never really got to be the first honor, the valedictorian or the summa cum laude, I had and still have the belief that taking the lead doesn’t necessarily and literally mean being the first; that it only means never stopping until one could be at his very best.

i'm creating this certain design for the poster, then after i finish one my officemates told me that it's so nice and cool and they also tells me that for sure the boss gonna love it! (of course music to my ears!) BUT... i didn't get carried away from their compliments, coz' after that i quickly go to my PC and make another designs for the poster, although my officemates tells me that my 1st design was indeed great and they tell me to send it right away so that the boss could see it! (EXCITED?) hehe... well, after i finshed my 2nd design, still my officemates liked my 1st design.. BUT in my Shock, after i present my poster designs to our boss, GUARAN-DAMN-TEED, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT!!!! the boss choose my 2nd design... and he loves it! and i was like "WHEW!" and after that the rest is history... *wink*

When I was in high school there was this beauty contest in our school. The muse in our section got sick and cannot join the contest. My adviser pointed me out to replace our muse, I was surprised but then I took all my guts and gave my best to represent my section. My adviser and the whole class cheered up on me because I won the first place. *okay*

During my undergrad years, we had an annual competition between the different year levels of our course. For the first three years, no matter how hard practiced for song and dance numbers, how seemingly amazing our ideas were, and how we painstakingly made costumes and props, we never ended up in first place. During our last year, I suggested to our batch leader that we put a twist in our presentation-- that is to make a documentary video about the theme that would play while the others were dancing. I had no idea how to edit videos then but I read up on how to work different editing software and practiced during my free time. I browsed quite a number of films, advertisements and Discovery Channel VCDs to find the necessary clips to use. My friends would often get worried because I slept very late, if I slept at all, just to finish our batch video. On the day of the presentation, I thought the audience were quiet because they didn't appreciate our presentation. We later found out that they were silent because they were in awe at the video, which made the difference between our performance with the other year levels'. And, of course, we finally won first place!

When I was in high school, we had a radio drama project for History. When me and my partner finished writing the script, my partner told me that I should be the director. I never wanted to be the leader, but I felt I will let my group down if I won't do it. In the end, our project turned out to be good. I realized that I am capable of being a leader if I put my mind to it.

Back in college, i had the unfortunate fate of having a chauvanist math professor who thinks girls are generally inferior to men and considered us the '2nd sex'. He would often drop innuendoes that girls are poor in math and science. He was so sure that one of my male classmate, who happened to be his favorite and whom he considers his progeny, would top his class. So, during finals, i took it as a chance to disabuse his mind and shake him out of his fantasy. I strained every nerve reviewing the formulas and charts. Everything was worth it because i got the highest mark but the best part was my professor had to pull in his horns and admit defeat for the 1st time.
