What is this that I heard na this coming season e mayroon daw ipa-parade na import ang San Beda na taga-Nigeria who stands 6'8"? May nagsabi na over-aged na raw iyon.

His name is Samuel Ekwe from Nigeria. He is taking up a course on theology/seminary as he is aspiring to become a priest, a man of the cloth. Some people from San Beda has already gave him a monicker, "The Dunking Priest". Basketball came to him as a sort of "accident" because of his height, he is 6'8"-6'9", his primary sport is football. Do not be suprised if you see him donning the jersey of the Red Booters as he is pondering of joining our football team. I assure you that Samuel is not over-aged, many sports officials from different schools have already checked and double-checked his credentials and his age since San Beda had joined other leagues such as the FMC II and the FMC Open Division. San Beda will not let an ineligible individual play in any of our teams. Once Samuel's eligibilty in the NCAA is over, he will trade his jersey for a habit.

Samuel is one of the nicest people you will ever come across. His goodwill and humanity will be the first qualities you will notice from him. San Beda is proud to have Samuel as a member of our community. Incidentally, he also composes Christian rap songs during his spare time.

i've seen sam ekwe play, and i don't think he's overaged at all. yes, he's a nice guy, but watch for those elbows and in-your-face dunks. long, long arms better suited for a natural 7-footer. has great shotblocking instincts since he doesn't have any bad basketball habits to unlearn like biting into fakes. yung mental aspect ang dapat ayusin nya kasi minsan dala pa rin nya yung kanyang angking saintliness sa laro.

Mild-mannered and spends his free time in the library and attending mass everyday. He never forgets "mag-mano" to every monk he bumps into in and out of the campus.

His father, a doctor who graduated from Amsterdam, was a former high ranking official in Nigeria. He came from a well-off family who treaures education very much. The Bedan community learned to embrace Sam quickly as part of the Mendiola family.

His dream is to become a monk and spend his lifetime in Bukidnon.

As to his eligibility, San Beda will never risk its reputation by fielding ineligible player.

A man of peace and prayer then. The Benedictine order is a perfect fit for this guy.

Do you know that Africa has the fastest growing Catholic community in the world ? Sam is part of that great conversion.

You guys are lucky to have such a man. Not just for his athleticism but more so because of his search for authentic humanity through the Benedictine Order. What a blessing.

Anyone pondering to call him names should think otherwise. ;) *okay*

Would anyone know how Sam Ekwe found his way to the Philippines and eventually to San Beda?

I've seen him at play and it is apparent the guy's first sport is football playing goal keeper. Not only with the way he would stretch his body and arms to block shots, but even in tapping balls off the opposition's passes.

Kahit pwedeng hawakan and steal or intercept the ball, he almost always would tap it away from play. Dapat possesion na ng RL, but the referee will rule out of bounds w/ him touching last. Daming incidents ng ganoon.

But back to my question...Paano nga ba siya na napunta sa Pilipinas?

That he is playing for San Beda should dispel all doubts about his eligibility.

Remember, Ato Badolato is the Athletic Moderator of San Beda. Walang kalokohan na pwede palusutin sa taong ito.

Because of Mr. Badolato's integrity, even the UAAP has hired his services as basketball commissioner in the past. Infact, there are talks he will again don the commissioners cap for season 69 of the UAAP, after UP appointed Joe Lipa as its coach.

Pero balik tayo sa topic....Paano nga ba napunta si Sam Ekwe sa Pilipinas?

well, it figures that he bought an airline ticket and hopped on the next plane out of lagos and into manila :D

kidding aside, i think he got in contact with a filipino benedictine missionary in nigeria, who recommended that he undergo divinity studies at san beda college-manila. so his real purpose here is to study and prepare to be a benedictine monk--it just happened that the local monks, being the hardcore and very knowledgable basketball enthusiasts that they are, endorsed this young man, a 6'8 diamond in the rough, to join the basketball team as part of his training.

Well, I can only hope that NCAA fans will be decent and mature enough not to hurl racial insults on the Nigerian whenever he plays for his team. NCAA fans are notoriously known for its below-the-belt jeers and diplay of the "dirty finger" during tightly-fought games. No wonder, 25 years ago, Danding Cojuangco's henchmen gave these wild fans some lessons on "good manners and right conduct" after they kept on taunting "Talo, panalo, bugbog kayo!" A few years ago, an elite UAAP school kept on belittling the students from other UAAP universities with "Tuition nyo, pang-gasolina ko lang!" or "Tuition nyo, baon ko!" and "Uwi na kayo! May rally pa ang mga tatay nyo!' (referring to jeepney and labor strikes). However, when the school authorities of that elite university informed their students that some of their fellow students are also from poor families who are relying on scholarships, the jeering stopped. Same thing when the same university reminded the rich students that some members of their basketball team are also from humble backgrounds. Indeed, there should be no room for bigotry in sports.

The alumni has been briefing Sam on what to expect next season. For sure, heckles, insults and even name calling will be resorted to by the pathetic hooligans of the NCAA. So expect that next season.

But Sam is a "real" person with the kindest of heart. I remember during one of the games in the FMC II, the player guarding him (I think from Arellano or TIP) kept on hacking Sam really strong with a use of karate chops. You could hear the cheap shots all the way to the side court but surprisingly, Sam was the one who approaches the player and pats him on the back. He even shook his hands after the game.

Pare huwag naman baka ma-over fatigue na ha ha ha.

The genetic make-up of Sam makes him physically superior compared to his fellow team mates. He even requested that he be flown to the farm and monastery in Malaybalay Bukidnon because he wants to do some farming instead of lifting weights during sem break. But I think he went instead to Puerto Gallera with his relative whose son is likewise studying in San Beda.

Not to offend you dude but as the old saying goes, "respect begets respect." Pero may idadagdag ako diyan sa quote na 'yan. "bastos begets bastos." If you're thinking na 'di kami rumerespeto, matagal na kaming mga Bedistang hindi nirerespeto ng mga ibang eskwela sa NCAA. Quits lang. One more time, "respect begets respect. Bastos begets bastos."

And yes, there are undereducated (I won't say uneducated because we're all studying or have studied and eventually graduated from school) people and definitely there are those who have the wrong breeding. On the other hand, it's basketball. Regardless if our team wins or loses, we still throw the same support to our athletes. At the end of the day, it's just basketball...but when school pride is already tampered by opponents, that's a different thing altogether.

Maiiwasan yun if the school administrators will refrain their students from shouting racist remarks. It's alright to "boo" but to hurl racial slurs will reflect on the school.

There was a time when then-Letran coach Rudy Hines was bombarded with racial slurs like "Negro! Negro!"

Letran and San Sebastian were shouting profanities at each other. Alverez-Quilban vs. Ayson-? That's normal for these two schools whenever they meet.

The Dominicans and the Recoletos priests were probably enjoying it themselves. :rotflmao:

Of course you cannot control the hoi polloi from shouting profanities. The nature of the beast.

Very true. The Letran-Baste rivalry always ended in fist fights outside the court. It was fairly normal to see rocks and stones being thrown at each other. Students with chains or baseball bats chasing student with slingshots and bottles. Cars being vandalized and passersby getting hurt. Good thing there was no molotov cocktail being thrown. Just your average loud fire crackers.

The problem with the two schools is the seemingly dominant stature given to hoodlum fraternities in college and high school. I could not understand why the Dominicans and the Recoletos cannot reign over these bad eggs in the campus. These are the troublemakers that Letran and San Sebastian must kick-out of their schools. These are the trouble makers that gave Letran and San Sebastian very bad reputations. Letran should know better. The once great institution has been reduced to its present state by the thugs in Letran uniform. Kick these guys out. Otherwise, blood will continue to be spilled.

Scary.......

I think the reason as to why there were lots of jeerings and even fights during the NCAA games between Baste and Letran during the 80's is that a lot of high school kids were watching. We know naman na iba pag mga high school kids ang involve, marami talagang asaran. Pansinin niyo kapag mga college studs at alumni ang majority ng crowd, wala masyadong asaran. I really liked the 2nd round meeting between SBC and CSJL, kahit intense ang crowd walang nangayaring gulo. Anyway, for this coming season malakas ang SBC, well thats good for all the Bedans. Goodluck to you guys and to all the teams.

Too bad he doesn't have any trace of Filipino blood in him. I've always wanted to see this guy play, and from what I've read in this thread, he does have game.

I think we should start requiring our big men to take up other sports that develop footwork (e.g., football, taijiquan, dancesport) in their spare time so that they won't be reduced to mere beanpoles in the hardcourt.

And wow. Is this guy for real? A legit 6'9" (who could possibly make it to the NBA) training to become a Benedictine priest? Well, basketball's loss is God's gain.
