Can we use mitochondrial DNA in determining the compatibility of an alleged father to a child? Nabasa ko lang kasi sa isang article na pwede daw, eh from what I know, mitochondrial DNA's are inherited from the mother. So how can that be?
Thanks :)

What do you mean, using mitochondrial DNA to test whether a person is really the father of the child? AFAIK it's being inherited from the mother, so how do you profile that against the alleged father's DNA?

That's why I'm asking...:D

No, mitochrondrial DNA (mtDNA) cannot be used to establish paternity. It is typically passed on only from the mother during sexual reproduction. It is therefore a powerful tool for tracing deep ancestral geographic origin on the direct maternal ancestry line like the mitochondrial Eve.

May nabasa nga ako na article about that eh, meron daw 7 (I forgot the exact number) distinct mitochondrial DNA (outside of mutation) sa population.

Hi guys, I'm intrigued by mtDNA being used to establish paternity. It appears unlikely with the current knowledge we have on mtDNA but with progress in genetics and molecular biology many that appear impossible in the past have become highly probable. Perhaps, I'm getting behind my readings. When you rediscover those references kindly let me know.
