View Full Version : Mapua vs UST Computer Science Objective Comments Please

Our daughter is currently accepted for MAPUA, and is awaiting results for UST, both for BS Computer Science.
Looking for objective comments on these 2 insitiutions, and trying to avoid the kind of flaming and insulting stuff we've seen in another recent thread.
Points to comment on ...
1) Tuition Fees
2) Recognised WITHIN the Philippines (reputation / quality of education)
3) Recognised OUTSIDE the Philippines (reputation / quality of education)
Kind of a grey area I know, as for some reason they classify Computer degrees as Engineering, when they are in reality a Science  .
Thanks for any and all (objective) comments,
Papa Dave

@Threadstarter: Wala pong Computer Science na course sa UST.. Kung meron mang computer related, ito ay Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Major in Computer Science; Bachelor of Science in Information Technology; at Bachelor of Science in Information Management..
Pero kung gusto mo parin, sige let's compare Mapua's BS Computer Science to UST's BS Math in Computer Science..
1. Tuition Fees - No doubt mas mahal sa mapua: Mapua-PhP30000/quarter : UST-PhP30000/semester
2. Recognition within/outside the Philippines - ang BS Math in Com.Sci ng ust ay bago lang.. Pero masasabi kong recognized siya being a unit of ust's faculty of engineering. Dunno about mapua...

Karagdagan pa: Kaya may division of majoring, kasi sa ust, 2 ang BS Math, majoring in Computer Science and actuarial science. The former belongs at the faculty of eng'g, and the latter at the college of science.
Pero maganda naman yung sa ust kung ibabase sa curricula.. if you want to see the curricula of bsmcs at the ust, search it within the ust's website, by typing the query at search field.
Sa mapua, ganun pa rin, di ko alam..

@fls...kadad: kung troll man yung threadstarter, sorry sa kanya, I will not compare the two programs from the two schools in a bloody manner, (that is kung gusto niya ng bashing dito) sasabihin ko lang yung nalalaman ko. In this case, sinabi ko lang ang alam ko about bsmcs at ust, pero I didn't make a comment about mapua's bscs because I really don't know anything about cs in mapua.
Anyhow, kung totoo man ito, or di troll yung threadstarter, hopefully nakatulong yung sinabi ko.. Good Luck po sa daughter niyo .:)

No, I'm not trolling, it's a genuine enquiry as this is a decision not to be taken lightly, and in view of the better prospects overseas, it's the recognition that we're interested in.
As you all know in PH, having come from a certain school can deeply affect your prospects, sometimes (unfortunately), above academic merit, when dealing with the local employers and job markets.
Same din sa international, in terms of only certain schools even being recognised ... I don't want my girl to sit through 3 years of school just to discover she has to do a 1 year make-up course in a foreign school, just to have her BS recognised.
By the way, you're absolutely correct, at UST the course is designated BS Math in Computer Science, at MAPUA it's plain BS in Computer Science, but I've seen that the course seems to be acedemically equivalent in terms of topics etc.
Keep the comments coming, and thanks.

Please stop posting irrelevant comments, flsfnoeraekadad. It doesn't do you any good.
To answer the topic, pick the school your daughter wants. If she studies in the environment she wanted from the start, everything will be perfectly fine. Whether UST or Mapua.
But if I were in your shoes, UST is it.

But of course before you pick the school your daughter will attend, she has to hurdle both schools' admission examinations.
Best of luck to your daughter.

Mapua's Computer Science Program is under the Mapua Institute of Technology School of Information Technology.
1. TUITION FEE. Well, gold_inhiniero's statement is true as fas as tuition is concerned. You'll pay in Mapua more than in UST. However, its worth paying such expensive fees because the Institute gives the best it can give to make its students attain excellence in every field.
2. Mapua is recognized in the country specializing in technology education, and ComSci is part of it.
3. I cannot comment more on this but Mapua is vying for ABET accreditation. In Asia, it is only the University of Singapore that is accredited by ABET and Mapua will be very much be honored if given the accrediation by ABET.
You see, if a school is accredited by ABET, it'll be easier for its graduates to work abroad. ABET accreditation enables employers, specifically in America, to recruit graduates they know are well-prepared.

OK *** CS sa mapua. Separate kasi *** campus ng CS sa Engineering kaya konti lang yung info na alam ko. Pero OK **** *** Computer Courses na inioofer ng mapua. State of the art yung facilities ng mapua makati and competitive din talaga compare sa ibang school.

kung sa tuition fee, mahirap po sa Mapua kung walang scholarship kasi medyo mahal....
kung recognised naman, whether it is within or outside the Philippines, medyo household name na po ang Mapua when it comes to technology...
but then...with the present system within the institute..uhmmm..ayoko na mag comment tama na yun...hehehe

I prefer you go and visit your campuses so that you can clearly see the pros and cons of enrolling your daughter in one school, choosing it over the other. :)

If-Then-Else statement! Anong programming language yan? C? C+? C++? Sure ko di TP, VBASIC or GWBASIC yan kasi pinag-aralan namin yun.
