FILIPINA beauty is on a roll these days. After Precious Lara Quigaman bagged the Miss International crown, another Filipina has made us stand taller in the global modeling front.

Finally, after close to two decades since the first Filipina, Melanie Marquez joined the Supermodel of the World contest, another morena beauty captured the critical eye of Ford Models Inc., one of the most prestigious modeling agencies in the world.

Seventeen-year-old Cal Carrie model Charo Ronquillo garnered second runner-up status among a field of 39 stunning models from all over the world last Wednesday. She bagged a $100,000 modeling contract with Ford Models New York, joining the ranks of other Ford girls like Naomi Campbell, Jerry Hall, Veronica Webb, Stephanie Seymour and Vendela.

A schoolgirl from Belarus, Katya Damenkova got the title, followed by Canadian model Bojana Reijic as first runner-up.

Charo is the first Asian model in the entire 25-year history of the Supermodel of the World Competition to make it to the top three.

“Now we’ve produced a winner!” Tina Herrera of Runway Productions, who has been behind the Supermodel scenes for seven years now, exclaimed.

Charo is now in the thick of a publicity blitzkrieg with photo shoots and new fashion campaigns including a guesting stint at NBC’s Today Show with Matt Lauer and Katie Kuric. Jade Robertson of Ford Models, who judged the Philippine finals, and Katie Ford herself chose Charo to speak in behalf of the other models in the competition.

Described as the “Asian version of Kate Moss,” Charo exudes a great attitude and a deep spirituality. Joey Espino, founder of Cal Carries and Runway productions, responsible for the training and development of models, places great emphasis on spirituality. “In a world full of glitz and glamour, being grounded with God always puts you in the right place,” I would remember Joey telling us during Cal Carrie’s spiritual retreats.

In fact, before Joey handed her over to Ford, he brought her to St Patrick’s Cathedral. They prayed together before heading over to the Hudson Hotel, where the winners were billeted.

During the Supermodel World Finals Event night, a photo exhibition of the finalists was on display at the reception area and immediately the guests were in awe of Charo’s beautiful photos shot by the world’s top photographers. According to Jade, “The audience reception for Charo was absolutely wonderful. They immediately took notice of Charo early on in the evening, giving her great reception during the competition. Ford Models New York has every hope in Charo and believes that she will make it big in the international modeling market.”

Charo may be this generation’s chosen one who will make the Filipina shine once again on the global fashion ramp.

para ngang mali yung line ni tim yap na...charo is the first asian to land in the top 3 because melanie marquez is a Filipina (and technically an asian) who landed in the top 3...1st runner up pa nga e. pero that's okay...overwhelming talaga. syempre...charo is a product of two competition...veteran na veteran iyan...MTV Fashionista best Model of the World Philippines and Supermodel of the World Philippines...trained by Robbie Carmona and Joey (and yes Audie of course) Espino.

Well, according to the article, Charo is the first asian to land in the top 3 in the past 25 years. Melanie Marquez might have been the 1st runner up in the competition more than 25 years ago.

You Filipinos just be proud of Charo rather than criticize her for not being fluent in English. (English can be learned anyway and she's only 17). This causes inferiority complex amongst young Filipinos. My point is she made it in a very competitive world of fashion. I'm glad she's a truly full-blooded Filipino; an authentic Filipina; and not born and bread in the States or in any other English speaking countries. It's time for young girls in the Philippines to have a role model. Bravo Charo! We're so proud of you. Filipinos (boys and girls, men and women) are beautiful.
