I am wondering if there are bedan or atenean alumni here who witnessed the '77 NCAA finals between San Beda and Ateneo in Rizal Col who can shed light on what started the free for all fight in the middle of the game. I think the fights again ensued after the close door game in Araneta Col up to New Manila.

Those were the dark ages of the NCAA and all Bedan alumni who witnessed the games (that I was able to talk to) were unanimous in hoping that those melee won't happen again.

Those days are gone for these two schools.
I understand that the present alumni of the two schools, together with La Salle, St. Scho, Assumption and even STC graduates, are actually doing a lot of reunion of sorts here and abroad. Golf tournaments, basketball, picnics, and all those social events for a cause.
It's wise to forgive but never to forget the destructive history of the NCAA which some students continu to perpetuate up to this day for bravado's sake....pity the NCAA.

SINCE Legends Games have suddenly become in vogue, it has been suggested that the protagonists in that closed-door finale be reunited to play in a charity game this time in a stadium packed with cheering fans. *okay*
Get to see the San Beda Red Lions led by Chito Loyzaga, Frankie Lim and JB Yango do battle with the Ateneo Blue Eagles led by Steve Watson, Fritz Gaston and Joy Carpio!

A little bit of history;
San Beda - Ateneo With the departure of UP, the Ateneo de Manila had the most dominant basketball team for several years. La Salle, while a fierce opponent, was not a perrenial basketball rival. It was in this context that a basketball rivalry between the Ateneo and San Beda emerged. Several memorable battles in the early 1950s ensued between the two teams. Carlos Loyzaga's San Beda Red Lions toppled the Blue Eagles of Ateneo from 1950 to 1951. Then, the Blue Eagles under the leadership of Frankie Rabat captured the 1952 and 1953 NCAA titles.
The rivalry was revived in the 1970s, when their sons, Chito Loyzaga and Louie Rabat met in the NCAA.[1] The most memorable battle was Game One of the 1977 NCAA Seniors Basketball Finals. A brawl ensued against fans of the competiting teams, which led the third game being held on closed doors, with San Beda winning the championship, after Ateneo's last second shot was ruled invalid. [2] The violence surrounding this championship series, coupled with the violence that was plaguing the league, led to both Ateneo and San Beda withdrawing from the NCAA. Ateneo went to the UAAP, while San Beda eventually came back to the NCAA.
To date Ateneo and San Beda seemed poised to rekindle their sports rivalry, less the animosity, via friendship games even though both teams belong to different leagues.
DLSU has a history of fielding players - WINNING AT ALL COST;
Ateneo-La Salle. No one can really tell when this rivalry began, although there are arguments pointing to La Salle's 1939 defeat of a top-seeded Ateneo basketball team and their being dethroned by the Ateneans who beat the Lasallites in the eliminations and had the La Salle cage team disbarred for fielding an ineligible player the following year (although the title would not become Ateneo's until 1941, two years after the defeat). Ateneo-La Salle games were always heated for both schools were exclusively for males. However, La Salle during its stint in the NCAA wasn't as strong a contender as the Ateneo was (see Ateneo-San Beda rivalry).
