i used worship the showier bassists (i.e. flea, billy sheehan, victor wooten, etc.), but i find myself enjoying the really 'functional' bassists now, expecially those who know how to use the instrument properly in the context of a song or band structure and still kick *** at it. anyway...

local:
dondi ledesma - you should see this guy live. he's an uber-bassist, and i think the only filipino to have been written about on bass player magazine. he's quite soft-spoken and unassuming too. he can really rip on the bass and i think he finds it harder to restrain himself to a bassline when performing than soloing. he runs his own website: http://www.dondiledesma.com and currently plays with juan dela cruz's wally gonzalez (check here for gigs: www.wallygonzalez.com). again, you should see this guy live.

louie talan - one of my heroes. i love his genre-hopping skills (pinikpikan, mishka adams) although his razorback stint will always be the one i revere most. his basslines are very intelligent, sometimes demanding but they always service the song properly.

buddy zabala - like louie talan, he's a very intelligent bassist who can create very memorable basslines that are defined not only by the notes he plays but by the ones that he doesn't play. at his peak with the eraserheads, he was probably the one among them who could turn out the best instrumental solo, but the fact that he never did is a testament to greatness as a bass player who knows his role.

foreign:
john entwistle (the who): the archetypal stoic bassist in the ultimate rock band, john entwistle was a genius. his melodic but gritty bass patterns were legendary. he played all over the place though, in a messy style uniquely his own, and despite being something of a virtuoso on the bass, he still stuck to the least of notes when the song demanded it... not to say that he enjoyed it though ('the magic bus' to him was practically nine irritating minutes of A).

paul mccartney - while better known as an excellent songwriter, macca is pretty much regarded as one of the foremost bassists who developed rock/pop bass playing from merely rudimentary patterns to what it is today. his evolution on the bass paralleled that of modern music. his career highlights are arguably the sgt pepper and abbey road albums.

james jamerson - his playing influenced paul mccartney, jaco pastorius and practically all soul/funk/r&b bassists. he played bass for motown and was responsible for the many hits the studio produced. i believe that his basslines have been some of the most sampled ever.
