We never use a travel agency when we travel to the US. Everything is so easy to arrange. Airline ticket rates are lower during the off peak months. For example, for the US, prices drop during September. It is still a good time to travel (depends on what state..in California or Hawaii its pretty good. Prices are also down during Feb but it is still winter so it can get pretty chilly.

For accomodations, we went to LA with no hotel arrangements. When we got to the airport, they had this booth with a phone and you can instantly book a good hotel depending on your budget. Most often, they offer free shuttle buses from and to the hotel.

I guess, it would be wise if you could compare how much you can save from doing things on your own ( which depends on how much free time you have) and using a travel agency. If the country you'll be visiting is well developed and a major tourist spot, then its easy to get accomodations and sightseeing tours.

But if you're going to countries like HongKong, Bangkok or Japan, its best to use a travel agency. I think you can get bargain prices if you use a travel agent when travelling to these coountries.
