SYNOPSIS

The hit new SBS drama Love Story in Harvard is exactly that: a young love story set at the famed Ivy League school in the United States. Kim Rae Won (My Little Bride, Attic Cat) stars as Kim Hyung Woo, a 1st year law student at Harvard Law who enters into a rivalry with classmate Hong Jung Min (Lee Chong Jin) for the affections of beautiful medical student Lee Soo In (Kim Tae Hee of Stairway to Heaven). The two men are both from prestigious families, while Soo In is from a poor family. Can the trio resolve their romantic differences and chase their dreams at the same time?

Of course, this may come in as a bias because I'm not an avid watcher of Korean dramas. In my life, I've only had the chance to watch about four Korean Dramas, which are: Rooftop Romans (also starring Kim Rae Won), Te Chang Gm (don't know how to really write that in English but oh well), and Age of Warriors. I know that's only four butI guess I've been too Americanized for that. Or perhaps it's because I'm too frugal and don't like to spend money to rent Korean videos.

Whatever the case, I've got to watch this drama and man, I loved every second of watching it. In fact, if I had $99.98 right now, I would buy this set of DVDs immidiately.

Because it is that good. At first, it was kinda weird with too much of Hyun-Woo (Rae-Won's character) thinking Su-In was a prostitute and stuff but once the plot unfolded, oh man, I never thought that a romance drama could be so involving and even more so engaging.

First of all, this is not at all like the other romance dramas at all (maybe that's why some people don't like it). While there is is an issue with Hyun-Woo becoming to like Su-In more and more and Hyun-Woo's classmate yet rival try to win Su-In, the academic life in Harvard is focused too as well as the hardships of junior medical career. Love is valued so much in this drama, unlike American soap operas where love is nothing but kissing with massive amounts of tongue simply to arouse the viewers.

In "Love Story in Harvard," a kiss doesn't occur until like the 5th episode and you can't really count that as a kiss.. (you'll know why when you see it) Why? Because the drama contains more substantial things than just kissing. There is real love. There is conflict, not just romantic conflict but real life conflict.

And more and more, any viewer will fall in love with Su-In, because a person like her... you won't find her in this reality. No one would be that willing to help other people, to sacrifice herself for people who are sick, and who are disadvantaged. And it just doesn't end with her kind spirit but her determination.

Then there is the issue of inner conflict in Hyun's rival (whom I can't remember the name of; God, I wish I had $98,99...). He, as a lawyer, does anything to win the case, but we can always see how his conscience comes into play. For his love of Su-In, he always comes into conflict with himself, which is why in the end... I won't tell you the end. But he does undergo major transformations in the series.

I don't have enough or even the right words to describe how awesome this series is. I've never cried so much watching it, good tears and sad tears both. I've never smiled so much and I've never been more touched by any movie, American or Korean. This is simply the best drama I've ever seen. So... If you happen to have a $100 bill that you don't need or want, or maybe you're so rich that you can just give it away to me... that would be real nice and real generous of you. But yeah, this drama kicks major behind.

New TV Dramas Unlikely to Ride 'Korean Wave'

"Love Story in Harvard"

SEOUL, Jan. 30 (Yonhap) -- Several new local soaps targeting domestic and overseas markets are struggling with low audience ratings at home.

SBS TV's "Love Story in Harvard" about love and friendship among Harvard's elite students was one of the highly anticipated dramas. Its star-studded cast, Los Angeles location and high production cost were key elements adding to expectations of huge commercial success.

The 5 billion won (US$4.8 million) pumped into making the drama represented a significant gamble on the part of soap producers as the average production cost for local movies last year stood at $3.49 million.

Starring rising stars Kim Tae-hee and Kim Rae-won, it was co-produced by Lee Jin-seok, best known for "Stars in My Heart" that triggered a boom in Korean pop products in China, and Lee Jang-soo of "Beautiful Days" and "Stairways to Heaven." The last two soaps are also well known in Japan.

However, "Harvard" finished earlier this month after posting average viewer ratings of 17.3 percent nationwide, according to TNS Media Korea, a Seoul-based audience-rating researcher.

"Sorry, I Love You"

In terms of popularity, the drama lagged behind KBS rival "Sorry, I Love You," which was aired at the same time. "Sorry" attracted average ratings of 20.3 percent, which grew to 29.2 percent Dec. 28, the research firm said.

Media critics say Harvard's cliche-ridden plot that is reminiscent of "Paper Chase," a popular U.S. TV series broadcast in South Korea from the late 1970s to mid-1980s, and "Doctors," a novel written famous American author Erich Segal, was the main factor behind the soap's relative failure.

In South Korea, a soap must attract upwards of 30 percent of the viewing audience to be considered a hit.

Nothing has since matched the success of last year's "Daejanggeum" and "Lovers in Paris," leaving the public starved of new hit dramas.

According to TNS Media Korea, the two ranked first and second as the year's top-rating dramas with average ratings of 47.8 percent and 41.5 percent, respectively.

MBC's "Sad Love Story," directed by Yoo Chul-yong, received wider media attention upon its debut than "Love Story in Harvard." Yoo is known for the popular drama "All In."

"Sad Love Story"


Yoo's drama made headlines before hitting the TV screens after a minor scandal involving the cast. Song Seung-hun, who was originally to act as male lead Gon-wu (now played by Yeon Jeong-hun) was conscripted to the military after it was learnt he dodged his mandatory military service.

Producers recouped a large chunk of the 7.6-billion won budget by cashing in the South Korean cultural boom in Japan sparked by "Winter Sonata." They pre-sold the screening rights there for 4.8 billion won.

Despite using New York as a location and featuring stars like Kwon Sang-woo, Kim Hee-seon and Yeon Jeong-hun, however, national audience ratings hover around the 10-percent level.

Analysts blame this on the relative strength of rival "Emperor of the Sea," which is aired at the same time on by KBS 2, and the slow development of the plot line.

SBS TV, a commercial channel that has been nicknamed the kingdom of tele-dramas, is no exception to the trend of under-performing soaps.

Early last year, it launched "Glass Painting," pinning its hopes on the charming Lee Dong-gon to resuscitate Korean soaps at home. Lee previously starred in "Lovers in Paris."
Also starring female actor Kim Ha-nul, "Glass Painting" explores the love triangle of two men raised in an orphanage who both fall for a woman they knew as children.

As ratings plummeted unexpectedly to single digits Wednesday, however, SBS decided to pull the drama earlier than scheduled by reducing the number of episodes from 20 to 18. The last episode is scheduled to be aired Feb. 3.

On Thursday, SBS replaced the producer of another new drama, "Three-Leaf Clover," outing Jang Yong-woo and bringing in Lee Jae-won just two weeks after its launch.

The reshuffle followed a dip in ratings to 6.8 percent Tuesday.

"Three-Leaf Clover" soon drew the media spotlight as top singer Lee Hyo-ri's acting debut as a chirpy factory worker. Critics complained that she overacted and portrayed too bright a character in contrast to the solemn male lead.

Analysts say TV producers failed to read viewers' changing tastes and should accept the blame for the poor ratings.

The local audience is looking for something new, not just a blend of three formulaic staples -- love triangle, family secrets, death of lead characters -- they said.

Hi everyone, am from singapore. Just finished watching the show yesterday....finished all 18 CDs in less than 2 days. Wanted to watch this drama for a long time...actually I bought it as a present for my ex as I know she wanted to watch it too but it never made it into her hands. The whole box of CDs were lying unopened and untouched for over a month until I decided to watch it on Thursday.

Must be the best K drama I have watched. I simple love romance dramas which has universites as the setting...seems so pure and untouched...the chemistry between Rae Won and Tae Hee was brilliant and their love seems so ........real? Its really hard for me to list out the scenes I love as there were too many....in fact almost every scene with RW and TH inside was classic. The 2nd song on the OST is really nice too....been playing it non stop since yesterday and listening.....the humming is so beautiful.....

ok...so made it through 2 episdoes...gosh i feel so guilty. all the characters are working hard in their studies, and here i am ignoring my studies to watch...hehehe.

[spoiler]anyways, i'd like to comment on their english. i don't think it's as bad as some people have said. KRW does a good job for the most part and the lead actress she's pretty good. the supporting guy...he's ok. it's harder to understand him even though he's the top student. and the american actors--really amateur--they're probably from the Havard drama theater club---hehehehe.

gosh it's so funny, everyone must have had a teacher of professor like "keynes." he even scares me. i'd need counseling too.

i so love the lead actresses role. she's not overly spunky and not too demure. she seems really relatable. she's happy and cheerful, but not too much to be annoying. i love how she plays along with KRW thinking she is a hooker...she said she did it b/c it was amusing...oh yes it was. although...i gotta say she is too good to be true a med student, volunteer, and doing odd jobs---gosh i'd never be able to measure up...hehehe...no wonder KRW likes her...hehehe

so love KRW, i feel for him. always the underdog. having to work hard to prove himself...oh i so understand. they so deserves a break.

and the supporting guy (Alex)--gosh he's so arrogant...i stick my nose up in the air away from him...i wouldn't want him to take time out for me..."stingy w/ his time" indeed...hehehe

well, gotta go watch the next episodes...awww...KRW...liking him more with each episode. as if i didn't already have enough of a crush on him...

Kim Rae Won is the best Korean actor ever! He's very effective... he does justice to every roLe given to him (not just in LSIH). DefiniteLy my fave Korean actor *okay*

Actually, tama si ju5t1n3 - KRW is such a good actor. In fact, kung hindi siya talented, you'll really hate Kyung Min (his character in Attic Cat) kasi medyo immature at jerk yun, pero KRW makes it so easy for us to love the character.
