View Full Version : Take your pick: MALATE or MAKATI?

What's your favorite gimmick area? Is it the high profile world of Makati? Or maybe Malate's ecclectic mix?

I find Malate more....cosmopolitan. You go to Makati to be "seen", to Malate to be seen and heard. Cultural, social, lahat na ng barriers, dissolve in the air. The word for Malate is Maverick!

I prefer going to Malate than Makati because you can get a lot more "sights and sounds" there. And you get to meet different kinds of people.. not the usual "sosy" and "conio" types in Makati. :)

it's hands down malate!!!! one of my favorite places in the world. Less pretentious than any makati counterpart. Whenever i do go out, I'm almost always in malate. It's very bohemian. It reminds me of the Village up in NYC. And it's actually cheap gimmick coz you park at one place(though looking for one is quite an adventure in itself) and just walk through Nakpil and remedios circle. It's cozy, hip and innovative =)

The score so far:

MALATE: 4

MAKATI: 0

To those who voted for Malate: Too bad it's been raining like crazy the past few weekends. :(

I noticed that 20 somethings (or atleast ppl in their late teens) do converge at Malate. I personally find some Makati places a tad juvenile or too overly "hip" for my own taste (not that i'm THAT old :)). It is sad that when the rains come, Malate is a bad place to chill.

Will Hunting-ur the bro of Chiqui? So u most probably know my brother, too :) and i have a feeling i've seen you around the places i hang out :D

malate... it's manila's own version of boracay... no pretensions... good clean (?) fun... reasonably priced food and drinks... small and cozy bars and resto's... filled with people who know how to party... "come as you are" atmosphere... bands, rave music, retro, rock, world music, jazz, acoustic, r&b hip-hop... tara sa malate...

i think i like makati better. m more used to hanging out there. malate is ok... maybe m not so used to it yet there. ive just been there 2 or 3 times... as opposed to makati probably every or every other weekend. but of course, drinks are cheaper in malate! haha... its easier to get drunk :)

Makati is a great place to shop and comfortably watch nice movies...more money, more fun. Malate is the place for people who simply want to have fun. Whether you have enough money or not, there's a place for you to go to. It's a place where you can just be yourself... who you are, what you are, where you're from, girl, guy, or gay...who cares? Everybody just wants to have fun!

Will Hunting

Yo Logan, you're right, "clean" may be a a questionabel adjective to describe Malate. What's cool about the place though, is that whatever kind of fun you want to have is ok. There's something about the place that makes people more open, more approachable.

tr|n|ty, how would I know you're brother? Leave me a clue here or just e-mail me.

Decades in Makati, grabe, nagwawala talaga kami dun. Non-stop dancing!

TYA in St. Francis. It's near, my barkada and I are 'regulars' (sort of) there, and their loaded potato skins... YUMMY!

Malate. It's cheaper, it's less pretentious, you can wear anything you want, and the crowd's less teenybopper. The traffic might be bad, but it's not as bad as in Makati.

no other place but MALATE. kasi kahit MA-LATE ka, buhay pa rin yung party. and the ppl there are cool and nice. less of the try hard kiddies. and i think the reason is because they are scared of the badings, which is good for the slightly older ones like me. it rids me of the inconvenience of being peeved by pretentious, ever trying to be hip juveniles.

yeah baby. MALATE. it may rhyme with "bulate" but.... ala lang. just thought that was a cute hirit. :)

hi 3-ni-T! :) you make me wanna be a better man. (do you find that line lame?).

there's no gimmick place like MALATE. kasi walang mga trying hard doon and mas marami kang mapupuntahan. sa makati kse isa pa lang ubos na money mo.

Malate is a far better place than Makati. It has less traffic jam, the bars are better, the crowd is not pa-sosyal and sosyal, and the place is really alive! :)

Cupid: For light dinners okay ang Cafe Breton. For full meals sobrang daming good places sa Remedios Circle and its peripheries. For afterdinner drinks etc there's so many places there to go to too, just walk around the J. Nakpil and Remedios area, most places are cool, i.e., Gotham, Le Taxi, Insomnia, Penguin, Third World Cafe(for the wala-nang-pera), etc. For early morning comfort food naman to wind the gimik down Pepe and Pilar's good for cheap champorado in giant servings.

I don't like either...sorry, K.J. ako. i find i actually prefer going to Timog-Tomas Morato -Libis (generally, QC-Pasig area) sometimes cause the crowd there are people out to have a good time talaga. in Makati and malate, its people who go there to be seen, and that's it. sa ibang areas, walang teenyboppers trying to look older.

but i AM partial to Cafe BReton in malate. They serve the best crepes in town.

isn't it some sort of dangerous in malate?
dba known for prostis and stuff yun?

anyway, i've been to the library, and my god was it a stomach acher. i actually laughed my head off whenever the badings would punch comments and whenever they make fun of people :)

the coolest place is definitely INSOMNIA!!!!

but shhhh....quiet please dont mention it too much bka magkalat nanaman mga kidos don mga teenyweeny boppers who wants to be in, who makes all good places olats!

baka insomnia might end up like travesia, mars, the fort, san mig, and all other ex-cool places.

Malate has that..."atmosphere" that's great for an evening gimmick. It's kind of romantic, too. And nothing there is too flashy. Hay, ang layo lang kasi!

malate po! medyo magta-travel pa nga lang kami from our work sa makati pero ok lang. it's worth it.

cafe breton talaga! sarap ng crepes! tsaka you get to see some interesting people as you hop from bar to bar. tsaka medyo relaxed ang mood sa malate compared sa makati.

Soren
Dec 3, 1999, 10:19 AM
Malate is the place when you have the time and energy to go there and especially when you don't have a care when to go home and if you want to go home...

For me, I am a regular the 10 Years in St. Francis Square... Go there on the 10th 20th and 30th... around 10 o'clock... beers become dirt cheap. (though, still I'd opt for shots of Tequila and some Citron)

But I agree with u coz sometimes place doesn't really matter if u r enjoying your company.

frankly speaking, I would say Makati.

Malate is good.. there are lots of places, and nice places at that.. the only difference really is the kind of people. Malate mostly boast teeny boppers and such who go there not for the party but for the porma..

as for makati, it is mostly a place where you cool off.. realy just party the way you want without much flaunting.. although there is flaunting, it is more subtle than in malate, where it is outright.

MALATE! The people are friendlier. You could talk to so many in Malate, unlike in Makati, parang snob lahat ng tao. As for age, most teens still go to Malate though they say that WhereElse? claims to attract many college guys and gals, but the last time i went there, mostly high school boys nakita ko. :( and also, the entrance to bars in Malate is cheaper than that of Makati. So, i'd prefer, Malate!

However, when it comes to days of the week, during weekdays, it is better to go to Makati than Malate. Halos walang tao sa Malate during weekdays. For food, i have to say also that Makati rules for the overwhelming number of good choices. And sometimes, okay din yung weekend movies nila.

Two years ago I would've said Malate, hands down.

Now, neither Malate nor Makati holds any special appeal to me.

But between only the two, I'd opt for Makati -- easier to get to & easier to park around in.

MALATE!
syempre kasi i study here. tsaka mas maraming pwedeng puntahan. it's more like a lively place to go on to. unlike sa makati (as i've seen), medyo on the business type. parang serious people ang mga nandoon. siguro it is more suitable sa mga professional... you know. parang it's an expensive place. everything's voluptous. more of like high class type of place. sa malate marami kang pwedeng gawin. d ko ma-explain basta. i describe it is as a lively place.

Hey, a resurrected thread! :)

I still like Malate. It just has this certain quaint appeal. But only on weeknights. I like the crowd and all, but sometimes, there are just too many pretentious people in such a small place.

But lately...it's been Makati. I agree with raven23: it's "easier to get to & easier to park around in." And there are a lot of places here that have that quaint Malate appeal without the pretentions. I just won't list them down for fear of these places being invaded by more people.
